Heartbreaking. I am sorry to all on scene who have taken care of and/or helped Ponso over the last nine years. I've been following his story since the news broke of his discovery in August 2015, as well as the Liberia 66 the month before. What was done to these Chimpanzees was pure evil. If you are not familiar, I will write a brief bit, but if it's of interest, it's worth doing some research. What happened to Ponso and the other abandoned Chimpanzees should never be forgotten.

In March of 2015, a group of sixty-six Chimpanzees used in Lab experiments, was released onto an island in Liberia, by the Demons at the New York Blood Center. These Chimpanzees were abandoned and left to fend for themselves. They became known as the Liberia 66. I came to know about them in July, which I think was when this horror first hit the news. A month later, news that a lone Chimpanzee was discovered on another island on the Ivory Coast. That was Ponso. Ponso too came from a life of being experimented on in the Labs of the NYBC. He was abandoned there in a group of twenty, in 1983. He watched everyone in his group get sick and die, including his wife and children. It's unknown how many years he was alone.

Many efforts to help raise awareness for this atrocity, both in person and online were put into action. One was the #IAmPonso campaign. Followers from all over the world made signs with this slogan...

My effort to spread awareness,

shared on the SOS Ponso Facebook page

Those words meant to relate us as fellow Great Apes to our DNA relatives, Chimpanzees. To further emphasize the cruelty put on those Chimps by Humans.

I was working on posts yesterday, but never sorted my words into any one in particular enough to post. Maybe it's meant to be that this one follows the one I wrote about the anniversary of our SFZoo Chimpanzees plight. 2015 was a heavy year for my emotional state regarding my love for Chimpanzees.

Thankfully they all had wonderful humans on the ground and around the world helping them, when those responsible ignored what they did. I followed their plight closely, my heart breaking with every thought of what had been done to them. My soul weeped for them all, especially dear Ponso who was left all alone after losing his Chimpanzee family. The Liberia 66 caught the attention of a married couple, who moved to Liberia to help them. They also eventually started the Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue, that takes in babie Chimps orphaned by the poaching trade. Efforts to both move Ponso to a Sanctuary and to bring him in a companion failed. He continued to be cared for by a local family, his human family, who came by boat daily to bring him food and give him companionship.

Since learning about Ponso, there have been many tears shed for him, but many smiles too, as we, his fans, were shared the happy times he spent with his caregivers.

I'll never forget this boy and the life he led.

RIP Ponso, Bless Your Soul.

leo811 (twitter)http://www.blogger.com/profile/11236794393308282027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2121675297610102084.post-58085165375316183502024-02-24T10:29:00.000-08:002024-02-24T10:29:32.522-08:00Nine Years Ago, SFZoo Director Tanya Peterson Tried To Kick Out Our Chimpanzees
As usual, there are many things to catch-up on, but today I'm going off list with this. It came up in my Facebook memories yesterday, perfect timing for a revisit of this Tanya Peterson offense.

Nine years ago in 2015, February 24 was Oscar Sunday. Today it's a Saturday and the Oscars are still two weeks away. This date will always represent a the definitive turning point in my crusade to Save Our San Francisco Zoo Chimpanzees.

Many long-term readers and Zoo peeps already know the story of this moment in time for our precious Chimp Friends, but considering the current atmosphere surrounding Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, and my continuing need to document her fails in that position, it's the perfect time to revisit one of Peterson's cruelest acts.

I have written extensively about this. Expanded details can be found by searching "Chimps" on this blog, or by visiting my blog dedicated to this travesty and my crusade to stop it from happening.

https://savesfzoochimps.blogspot.com/

During a Zoo visit at the end of January 2015, I stood near Triple Grotto, home to our three Senior Chimpanzees since the late 1960s, when it was built. Our male Cobby arrived at the Zoo in 1968 at ten years old, after being used in the entertainment industry. Our two females, Maggie and Minnie, arrived at just over a year old, via an Animal procurement outfit that sold Wild Animals. All three of my Friends had come from the wild as babies, violently kidnapped from their natural homes and families. I grew up visiting them my whole life, but it wasn't until 2008 when I started learning about the history of the Zoo's Residents as individuals did I know their sad start in life. I was endeared to the Chimps deeply. They brought me joy, but also sadness when I would often think of their past. Thankfully, that start was long ago and in the forty-five plus years they have lived a safe and well cared for life. Until 2014 when Director Peterson decided she wanted them gone. She had other plans and their "needs" for a new enclosure and new troop members, didn't fit into her "wants". So, as I stood there enjoying watching my Chimpers, a Keeper came and stood beside me. Without looking at me, so it didn't appear he was actually talking to me, he said, "You know Tanya's getting rid of them?" A chill came over me, as I said, "What?" He continued, and knowing how I use my voice, he then said, "What are you going to do about it?" I said, "They're not leaving on my fucking watch!"

Allegedly, it was happening soon, like any day, so I had to act fast. Within two days I launched a crusade to save them. I had never done anything like this, but I had to stop this. I started a dedicated blog, Twitter, and Facebook, I was non-stop about this situation. Videos to YouTube, Memes, everything I could think of for awareness, including a Petition. Soon the stars shined on me and a friend told me she had a contact at channel 7. That contact was connected to Dan Noyes, the reporter leading the I-Team investigations. I explained the urgency and Dan jumped in immediately to help. He interviewed me two days later. While we sat chatting off camera, I gave him the full story, and all the people he should talk to. On the spot, I called John Alcaraz, a friend who was the Chimps first Keeper and he agreed to be interviewed. The next day, Dan was off to Cedarville eight hours north to meet with John. From there he literally ran with it, to Chicago to talk with Steve Ross the SSP Chimpanzee Coordinator and to Florida to the amusement park where the Chimps were being sent. I remember visiting the Chimps one day that week and hearing the transfer cages being built. I called Dan's assistant as I stood there to update the urgency. Dan made this story happen in just over a week and it was the turning point in my crusade. It provided the widespread awareness needed to Save our Chimps.

As I sat at my computer, working for my Chimpers, while watching the Oscars Red Carpet, I got a message from Dan. The teaser for the I-Team piece would run after the Oscars. I tried to stay awake to see the first broadcast but fell asleep. I woke up after midnight, hearing a familiar voice, I turned to the TV and there I was! Gosh I didn't expect to see my big face like that, but I was happy to be the face of helping my Chimps. I had many messages, "I saw you on tv"! It played a few times an hour, for the two days prior to the broadcast. People even stopped me in the market to talk about the Chimps. Evidently the Zoo Director Tanya Peterson really had her panties in a twist and sent out a frantic email to All Staff containing false information about me. That's her usual MO when someone does something she doesn't like, create untruths to further her agenda against them.

It wasn't the first time she made-up lies about me and I'm sure it wont be the last. I dont care. I did everything I could to help my Chimpers. To prevent them from being kicked out of the only home they ever knew. Our Director is a cruel person, who has no empathy or compassion for the Animals.

Two days after the News report, I was again on my computer, still working for my Chimpers before heading to the Zoo for a quick visit before the Joint Zoo Meeting. A Keeper messaged me and said, "Chimps are staying, You did it"! I started sobbing then and just now as I'm writing this, I got a chill and tears are flowing. It was an amazing feeling to help my Friends.

This post was not about patting myself on the back, because that's not me. Every time I've used my voice against what goes on at the Zoo, it's been for the Animals. It will always be about them and their well-being. It was once again about pointing out something horrific that has happened at our Zoo and who was responsible.

I find it disturbing that someone who could, perpetuate such cruelty towards our Senior Chimpanzees, non-human Beings that share almost 99% of our own DNA, is still running our Zoo.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I was just up getting food, and thoughts came to mind. For some reason my mind flows best when I'm in the kitchen, maybe it's the sound of water? Anyway, I had the thought to just post the commentary videos I made yesterday (note they are listed as Jan 2024 by mistake). Unfortunately, there are four. I feel like I gave a tease in the previous post to things I might not say fully in posts in a timely manner. While when I do, it will then be a bit of a rehash, weaved into even longer winded commentary, but that's ok. I know there's probably people reading who have followed along for years, and like me are just tired of it all. If you are one of those people, thank you for caring enough about our Zoo Friends and our Zoo, to still check out what I've got to say.

Continuing to express how I feel about the situation, even when alot is repetitive, is my prerogative and it's your prerogative not to read or watch, but I appreciate those who do. And if Director Peterson, anybody in the Zoological Society, on the Board, or in the Rec and Park, happen to be reading or watching, then you know what, ... You've had sixteen years managing the Zoo, you should have done better. It should be no surprise, myself and others are all just really pissed off.

Here are the videos, including information, opinions and a bit of rambling. I'll include a few notes and the length, as a couple are a time investment. I appreciate those who stick with it, but also know it's alot to listen to me gripe, especially all in one sitting! They were meant to have been sprinkled into a few different posts (and might still be), I don't expect anyone to spend a continuous chunk of time on this.

*New Madagascar Plan ... Thumbs Down From Me (11:37)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=d_edOH_mfKk&si=rt9wguyoAuk05GZp

Ok, so first! This is what set me off. This damn Madagascar debacle. I don't know how long this new plan diagram has been up, because I hadn't been to the Zoo in almost two months. So after five+ years of the same one up with multiple different times through the years with no one really knowing what's going on with the Pit, this took me by surprise. And while standing there my brain was in a tizzy trying to comprehend the layout, which for some reason I always have a problem grasping. I mostly wondered if there was an indoor viewing of the Tortoises for days when the weather is not in line with their needs. Upon a second look it seems there might be (a very small one), but who knows. I didn't really talk to anybody about the whole plan, which at first glance is awful in my opinion, so have had no discussion other than asking a quick question to someone passing by, and they didn't know.

*Orangutan Overview Feb 2024 (5:12)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=67L2jhcWZGY&si=13HM6PLJvxC_vMNH

Next I did a current complain rehash about Triple Grotto and the poor Orangutans. It's important, as their journey here completely illustrates the lack of care by Director Peterson. Her "want" to have them, took priority over what their "needs" would be, and she brought them here anyway, without having an appropriate enclosure for them. Their housing situation the first eight months here, in my opinion really messed them up.

*Upcoming Art Installation Feb 2024 (4:30)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=nC1XvVsM1K4&si=GoWLwTxcRBtde3Vv

Every time one of these pops up, it irks me that money is being spent on non-Animal things.

*Gorilla Trek VR Feb 2024 (1:09)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=DZV9YrHBwas&si=7JnruWTqb53clytO

Yet another thing that is not an Animal related improvement or a live Animal acquisition. It's like that damn zipline. The Zoo bought that dumb contraption, and what a waste of money. I'd like to know the numbers on this. How much is it costing, versus how much money is it bringing in?

We don't need Art Installations, VR stuff, or anymore Gardens! We need a better home for the Orangutans, the netting over Flamingos to be completed, netting over Meerkats and Prairie Dogs, Enclosures for Animals being kept off exhibit, Animals at the Walkabout, Monkeys!.............

On occasion I pull quotes from shows or movies. I had this line in my notes. There is no reference point, so maybe it's my own? It may very well be, because as the only member of the public who is vocal, I have felt this way for a very long time. Anyway, it's the truth.

"If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention."

Previous Post:

(Includes some commentary on the Baobob tree in the MADagascar Center of Craziness)

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2024/02/post-set-backs-hopefully-not-plus-some.html

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Hopefully Not! - Plus Some Fossa Fun!
Slowly but surely as the saying goes, I'm getting to posts. Got another set of days in, and maybe, hopefully, I'll make some progress. Seems more trying than doing, but again, it takes alot out of me to do them, and even more to get psyched up for it. I just don't want to, but it seems caring about something so deeply, and seeing it wronged, instills a drive that doesn't wane, even after a dozen plus years of writing about it.

After the last post I made a short list of posts to do, to get me caught up and to those damn Madagascar posts I've been talking about for years. Yea, the one's that pretty much define all that's wrong with current management. Current management being those three cogs of authority, Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, the Zoological Society, and the Rec and Park Dept.

Anyway, that list had a handful of posts. Easy to get through, and I figured I had it in me for this weekend. After my visit yesterday, that list went from four to ten, pushing my long overdue updates to previous posts to the bottom of the list. The culprit, something that ignited all those swirling thoughts rooted in mismanagement... wants over needs, lack of fundraising, misuse of funds when there is some, basically, no friggin' clue how to run our Zoo for it to thrive at it's optimum and setting a course for it to thrive into the future.

I woke up a bit ago, not thinking about blogging, resting in bed, watching old videos on YouTube from a band I hung with in the 80s. Then all of a sudden Zoo stuff popped into my mind and now I'm thumb typing this post on my tablet.

As I said, I was all set to push those updates to the end, but I've been doing that for a couple months, as more current irritations surfaced. So while I was all set for that, I think I just have to get those done first. Believe me, my mind is swirling and in need of getting out the upset at what I came across yesterday that got me going, hopefully I can get to it all in a decent time frame. Who knows, but I really need these overwhelming thoughts lifted soon. It's a new year and like I wrote last month, it's this year or never! That said, for me, "this year", means sooner than later.

So, I apologize that for a bit the posts may not flow, but when I get to a certain point, I will link them in a good flow. Remember, the main mission of this blog is documenting, the finale goal is illustrating what is now sixteen years of mismanagement by San Francisco Zoo Director Tanya Peterson.

For your time (reading my ramblings) and pleasure, here's a video from yesterday. After not visiting for almost two months, I had two great visits this week with wonderful Zoo Friend moments. Yesterday, I captured some good footage of Violet the female Fossa. It's a bit long, lighting gets screwy, and I'm in the MADagascar Center of Craziness (haha just made that up!), so you know there's cranky commentary. At least give the beginning a view to see Violet 😊

https://youtube.com/watch?v=EKCtiIqv9ZQ&si=BvQGJwEoLcUm40-P

video screencap ... sniffing through wood wool, close face, tongue and toothers!

Previous Post:

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2024/01/januarys-posts-truths-about-zoo.html

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... I honestly don't think anyone but Director Peterson will see it that way. The majority of those who work there, who have worked there, and who care about the Zoo, know everything I've written has been honest detailing of what's gone on at our San Francisco Zoo. I have been vilified by Peterson, by certain staff, and docents, for what I've written. That's okay, as long as I know that I'm speaking the truth, I don't have a problem with what other people's perception is of me, I never have. I will never stop being a voice for the Animals and Zoo, and allow the voices of the people who wear rose-colored glasses to perpetuate the Director's mismanagement that has led to Animal Welfare issues and destroying our Zoo in too many ways. That would allow the illusion that those in power are doing their jobs, and that is simply not true.

This post didn't happen in the time frame I had hoped, which was closer to the last post, two weeks ago, but I think it's important before I proceed with any further posts, that will surely be in the same vein. Oh well, I do what I can, when I can. I'm just really tired of the same old thing. One of my peeves in life is repeating. Rehashing, Redoing, anything that involves monotony of bullshit. And frankly what's been allowed to happen to our Zoo under the direction of Tanya Peterson, is bullshit. None of it would have happened if the management system supposedly in place, was working as it should. It has not for at least the fifteen years that I have been monitoring the Zoo. Fifteen years ago I was 45. So yea, now it's become a weight I need to be lifted. I will continue to note things I find an issue, but the same old things, and dealing with a management structure that fails, is so old.

The management structure I speak of includes Director Tanya Peterson, The San Francisco Zoological Society, and the San Francisco Recreatioin and Park Department. I think I've mentioned this before, but I have a post in draft that is meant to outline the responcibility of each of those entities, and their fails. I've had the post, Pyramid Of Power, queued up in a post list for at least four years. For the purpose of this post, I'll note things in brief, but the in full version will still come in that post. To sum it up a bit though, the structure has failed to operate as it is intended. The fails within the Zoo, fall on Director Peterson and that is the name that will keep popping up in my posts, but the blame is also on the Zoological Society & Rec and Park for not doing their jobs and defering to Peterson because they just don't care, and are too lazy to be involved with the Zoo past cocktail parties. Again, not meaning to bash, but it's the reality.

Speaking about reality. Since I haven't gotten to the post that I've been meaning to with each new year, basically listing all the fails of the year, and in more recent years, listing every year since Director Peterson has take the reigns, I'll mention a few here. You can look forward to the full exposure in a future post, currently titled, List Of Offenses. These are the top Offenses that come to mind, not in any particular order, as they are all offensive. For more detail, search this blog in upper left corner for words in quotes. ...

*Trying to kick out our Senior "Chimpanzees", their home of near fifty years.

*Acquiring "Orangutans" with no place to house them, keeping them in caged tubes.

*Keeping "Komodo Dragon" in a terrarium, a space too small for him to even turn around in.

*Keeping "Andean Bear" on concrete, allowing his bones to break-down so badly he had to be euthanized, while otherwise mentally and physically healthy.

Director Peterson has failed in her job to do right by the Zoo, the place she has been tasked to manage the last fifteen years. I don't say these things to be a bitch or be mean, I say them because I've been watching a place I've cared about my whole life being destroyed for the last fifteen years.

People would laugh, but I seriously think I could run the Zoo better than Tanya Peterson. I have never had career ambition, but my passion for the Zoo, makes me confident I could. That passion, along with my empathy for Animals and my ability to learn from those who know things I might not, gives me three up on Peterson. In addition to having no Animal related qualifications, she doesn't care about the Animals or the Zoo. If I was going to make just one Case and Point to support that, it would be the acquisition of the Orangutans. At least I care and over the last fifteen years have learned about the Animals that live there, and used my brain to think of how to make the Zoo better, and thrive each day and into the future. Director Peterson, may have social and financial standing that looks good on paper, but she has shown no care and action to do the job righteously. While it's infuriating and frustrating, at the root, it's just downright sad.

The Zoo is crumbling, like the fence that surrounds it.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... So, before leaving today to get stuff done for myself, I'm up early again working on Zoo Animal stuff... because I care. Is Director Tanya Peterson up working for the Zoo this morning? And while on that thought, Why has Director Peterson not got involved in this Bison Meadow issue? Why hasn't she got with her Rec and Park buddies and had the sprinklers fixed? This has been an ongoing issue for years. One Park Gardener told me (before they were instructed not to talk to me about it), that the sprinklers in the Bison have broken since they started there thirteen years ago! No one cares.

How many more years will they all continue to leave the Bison, grazing animals, without lush landscape to graze on?

My latest documentation below. I read about eight and watch a few News videos. The only other new information I got, was the Mayor saying, "You know how people line-up over night to buy tickets for Beyonce, the same thing, that's my hope. People lining up overnight to go see these Pandas".

My question is, does her vision include people lining up along the Zoo's broken downtrodden shitty third world looking fence?

Seriously, I'm not trying to hate on the Panda thing, I love it, but not for the current state of our Zoo. People with authority to make sure the Zoo is consistently on track, should have done so a long time ago. Instead no one has cared and our Zoo is now in dire straits. The City defers to their Rec and Park Dept, who does nothing. The Zoological Society, defers to Director Tanya Peterson. Director Peterson has mismanaged the Zoo from the start, and has gotten away with it because no one cares.

Upon seeing a new fence going up around the Botanical Garden, I saw there was an actual fence program in progress and inquired if the Zoo could get a similar fence, showing the state of the current one. You would think considering the Zoo is in the Rec and Park Dept they would qualify. The program manager said No, the Zoo can pay for it themselves! Unreal and Disgusting. The Rec and Park, is constantly renovating and creating Playgrounds and pocket parks, yet they can't help the Zoo replace a damn fence? They should be ashamed for both allowing a place in their Dept to look like this and for not wanting to help when they could have.

I took an update video of the perimeter fence mid-December.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Lsh6P1n9HRA&si=X32fSRGGAJeODsNq

I know I'm a broken record with this damn fence, but everytime I see it, it upsets me. I shows just how much no one cares. This fence has been like this the whole time Director Peterson has been there. She should be ashamed, but shes obviously not, because she doesn't care. If I was Director, I'd knock this damn thing down myself, day one! ... And if the Rec and Park had put up a fence like at Botanical Garden, graffiti would not be an ongoing issue. The lack of regard and respect for the Zoo sickens me.

While I'm noting the fence, I might as well play my broken record about the Rec and Park's lack of care for the Bison Paddock. The sprinklers are still broken, even though they were allegedly fixed. The Bison meadow was shitty all year, brown and dried out, until it rained. The Bison had no green to graze on.

Search this blog for "Fence" and "Bison" to read more. Like the time this graffiti was left up on the fence for a week, till I finally made a call. Why was I the one who had to get it taken care of?

Ok folks, its heading toward midnight, that's it for the day. I worked over eight hours on three Zoo posts. Wonder how many hours Director Peterson worked for the Zoo today? No one will ever know, because no one monitors when she works and she gets paid no matter how little she works or how much damage to our Zoo she does. She can't even call in to the monthly Joint Zoo Meeting that lasts an hour, eleven times a year. I'd seriously like to know what she does to earn over $350,000 a year.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... I had not.

Before even reading it, my mind was in a tizzy! So much running through it at once.

First, it sparked coincidental, as that same friend and I had an interaction when she alerted me recently that China was reconsidering allowing Giant Pandas to once again be sent to California. My response to her hoping for a "miracle" that we get one in San Francisco, was, ...

"Yes (it would take) a miracle! One of my news alerts for the Zoo had an article the other day and the lead-in, mentioned Pandas coming to California. I assumed back to San Diego. I checked news items and indeed it mentioned San Diego as the previous, but only California as the future. So who knows. I don't see it. I would think SDZ or Oakland would have a better chance. That said, if the donor who funded his personal Want for Madagascar, would divert millions from that into building an enclosure for them next to Grizzly Gulch, it would be quite a coup! and increase membership and gate sales in general."

... Unfortunately there has not been a responsible and well thought out plan for what is best for the Zoo to thrive, at any time during Tanya Peterson's fifteen year reign as Zoo Director. So, I don't imagine how this could even happen.

Recalling this conversation, was running parallel to the reality of the situation. Much like when Director Peterson actively and allegedly aggressively, sought to acquire Orangutans. Upon hearing they were a done deal and on the way, my first thought was, Where are they going? If you are not familiar with the cruel housing shit-show that our poor Orangutans were put through, search this blog for "Orangutans". I wondered if Peterson would keep the Pandas in some quarantine box, akin to how she kept the Orangutans in caged tubes, and then after just toss the Pandas in some antiquated enclosure, like she did with the Orangutans. Thinking about another large Animal coming to the Zoo with no appropriate place to live is very upsetting. I know how this plays out. Bright and shiny new toys are acquired, touted with excitement to draw people in and then their needs disregarded. The afore mentioned Orangutan situation is still a travesty. The enclosure they are in is sixty years old. It should have been completely renovated, yet not one thing was done FOR them. As usual Director Peterson cried poor, and they remain in a sad enclosure. Same thing happened with our first Komodo Dragon. Peterson promised a new home within a year. Then she allegedly vetoed all proposed plans, boo-hoo'ing no money, and he languished in a terrarium, as among other offenses, he grew and grew, eventually even too big to get through the opening to his night quarters. You can search this blog for "Komodo Dragon" or "Falcor" for more details on his sad life at SFZoo.

As much as I would love to see Pandas here again (I saw them in the 80s and it remains a wonderful memory), and I think having Pandas here would do wonders to uplift the Zoo in many ways, I do not think it should happen until changes are made. It should in no way happen,...

1. ... while Tanya Peterson is Director.

*2. ... unless there is definite locked funds for an appropriate enclosure.

3. ... until an appropriate enclosure is completed.

That all said, the whole money thing is disturbing. If someone wants to donate for Pandas, they should have helped the Orangutans to have a better home. That said, the money having Pandas would most likely bring in, could fund a complete overhaul for the Orangutans.

... Again because of Director Peterson's mismanagement and misuse of what little funds the Zoo apparently has, is why this shouldn't happen while she is still Director.

So, let's move on to the news articles. As I'm writing this now, I went back to the article from SF Standard that was initially sent to me. I thought I had read it, but I guess in my tizzy, I didn't. I had screencapped from the only other article I read, from KRON4, to include in this post, as what I read was so outrageous and frankly delusional. Now, I'm even more sure, SFZoo should not acquire Pandas.

First the KRON4 ones...

https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/san-francisco-asks-chinas-president-for-a-panda/

My reaction to this:

Good grief! We have no Asian Conservation zone that's specifically designed for a Panda Reserve. Does she (Mayor Breed) even know how Director Peterson was keeping Orangutans? Like the folks on the Zoological Board and at the Rec and Park Dept, the Mayor has no clue about what is happening at the Zoo. I'm not trying to be mean, just saying it like it is. And if anyone from the Board or City related paid the Zoo any care and attention, it would not be in the state it is.

Additionally, the reporter is obviously another person who does not go to the Zoo, nor did they bother to fact check this supposed "zone". The Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Asian Rhino and Orangutans, are all in different areas of the Zoo.

This from the SF Standard...

https://sfstandard.com/2024/01/08/panda-san-francisco-zoo/

My reaction to this:

For starters I just checked the website and I don't see anything about Asian Conservation, and certainly not a specific zone. Not sure what planet any of these people are on, but nothing is specifically designed for a future fantasy, and certainly not for a Panda Reserve.

Additionally, this article lays out the cost, and with the rental fee to China, and what is sure to cost in an excess of that twenty-five year old enclosure price tag, this is an outrageous dream to chase.

That said,...

*I previously noted about locked funds and such, but now, I have to say, I do not think any donor money should pay for any expenses involving Pandas. So, unless the City of San Francisco is going to completely fund this venture, it is irresponsible to use funds from any other sources to bring Giant Pandas to SFZoo at this time. Our Zoo needs alot of work since under Director Peterson too many things have been ignored, either because of "no money", or for unnecessary things that money somehow is found for and spent irresponsibly.

So yeah, bottom line, the City needs to pay for the entire expense associated with Giant Pandas coming to San Francisco, and for the duration of their time here.

The articles note the Zoo did not respond with comment on the Panda news, so who knows where this want originated, with Mayor Breed or Director Peterson, or if the two have even spoken about it.

Previous Post: 2024 or Bust!

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2024/01/2024-or-bust.html

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... Hoping everyone is feeling like 2024 will be a good year for alot of things. The past month has been good to me, and I left 2023 feeling a sense of rejuvenation in my life. I have mentioned over the past couple years, I've had some tough times that have left me among many other things, with no energy to be consistent with this blog. I've needed to follow-thru on a couple things Zoo related, as well as wrap-up all the posts in draft, that I've referred to in the past. As we head into the sixteenth year with Tanya Peterson as Director of OUR San Francisco Zoo, for me it's this year or bust. For me personally, it's sorta stepping back from the need I have to document everything. Fifteen years is a long time. I got other things to get done. I will never stop caring about the Animals or the Zoo, or being vocal about issues, I just may have to stop being so consumingly passionate for a seemingly lost cause. The Zoo under Peterson at the helm is continuing to circle the drain, and the Zoological Society, and City let it happen.

The goal of this blog has always been to document all the things not right at the Zoo. I feel if I'm not a voice for what goes on there, no one will be, and the silence lends to not only the lack of knowledge to everyone outside the walls, but the inability to hold the responsible parties accountable. Those responsible parties are the San Francisco Zoological Society Board and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Dept. Those parties are supposed to be managing entities, which by my definition of that means, they are the checks and balances. They are supposed to be unbiased in monitoring Director Peterson's management of the Zoo, not let her make decisions that among so many offenses, have led to Animal Welfare issues, and non-existent funds for Needs. Neither the Society or the Rec/Park has fulfilled that responsibility in the fifteen years I've been monitoring the Zoo. I will expand more on this in an upcoming post entitled, Pyramid Of Power, which also details how the Society enable and supports bad decisions, by ignorance and pushing their own personal agendas. In short, it's a nest of mismanagement that needs reconstruction, starting at the top. Because seriously, how much longer can our Zoo survive under the same management conditions of the past fifteen years?

Even when I'm not actively in a space for writing posts, I'm constantly making notes. The Zoo is always on my mind and there is something daily that pops into my mind, whether it's words to use in a blog post or an idea for making the Zoo better. All these thoughts usually go on my messenger and then I transfer to note pad. At this point there are way too many notes, here and there to read through for the most part, so for much of the upcoming posts, I'm just winging it. Certainly all of this post is just as it's flowing from my mind. There was no real preconception, past the title and a brief thought about the new year. So, I apologize if I get to rambling, as I have always tried to make posts as concise as possible, while presenting information completely. I'm also trying to cut down on the time it takes. Posts usually take an average of six hours, some less, but unfortunately some longer. This one has gone past three hours now. With 784 posts to date on this blog alone, without illustrating the route to answer, that's over two years of working full-time. It's alot, and probably rivals if not supercedes the avgerage amount of time our Zoo Director works. That said, even if after all these years and efforts, I still feel like and seem to be the only person, inside and out who is willing to be the face of the truths, at least most of the truths are out there and documented. I have had multiple Zoo related blogs over the years, but this one has been the main one for over ten years and my voice has been heard through over 250,000 views.

blog stats from today

So to wrap-up this post and move on to the next on the list, I'll note my intention at the moment. If I had continued on with my posts from November, I would have done some additional Animal updates, then previous post follow-ups, then the whole blog wrap-up which will be kicked-off by finally finishing that damn Madagascar post that I started in 2018! So, now that a couple other things have come to my attention, my plan is to do those newer, timely ones, then get back on course with the old plan, starting with the Animal updates. But, who knows.

Anyway, Cheers to all who cares about our Zoo Friends and Zoo. And let's all hope 2024 see's our SFZoo going in a new direction.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... This view is inside passage way, next to the Anteater inside viewing window.

In my first video, you can hear me say two things of note... I mention the spots on his footies. I was told to look at his feet, as he still has his babie spots visible! This is the closest I'll get to a babie Tapir, unless Pacha gets a breeding partner in the future. So, seeing his little watermelon toe spots is special, make sure to look for them! ... I also wonder outloud, when I see Evita Anteater pass by the fence, if there will be interaction between them. There wasn't, but when I got home and looked for Pacha content on the Zoo's socials, they coincidentally posted a video from the same position, and scene, that shows them interacting. Check it out!

https://youtube.com/watch?v=9xGddTrPCn4&si=nGU0kw1bijpbUWmv

https://youtube.com/watch?v=VaS3POmltaQ&si=MpWDszrw47CZbms6

I asked the Curator whether my friend Cusco, the Guanco, would be coming back to the Puente after Pacha was over quarantine and was told no. Maybe he would do well there? Maybe he and Slider could be companions? Both were hand raised, maybe they would get along? I may be on to something! Will investigate the possibility.

Upon hearing news that Cusco won't be coming back to Puente, I asked whether there's been talk about bringing back Capybara to this enclosure, as not only were they popular, but Pacha has lived with them before and it would be nice for him to have companions. There has been no talk of it.

I forgot to ask about the female Spectacled Owl that was listed in Acquisitions. Finally getting to adding photos and video links.

In early October, I had been round to try and see the Fossa, in the Madagascar, eternity to complete exhibit, a couple times.

The exhibit is split into two enclosures, one at ground level and one upstairs. I never liked the idea of this, in fact thought, Why the hell would anyone think putting these Animals on top of a concrete structure was a good idea. My first impression is, it's too small, and awkward looking. I don't like it for them. From what I first heard, it sounded like they would have full access to top and bottom, but then I learned they can not be housed together, so there it is, each one gets a small area.

At the time, there was supposedly some kind of issue with the bottom enclosure, so the male hadn't been moved down from FCC yet. The female initially had access to the bottom, which I heard she liked, but is now exclusively on the top level only. Hopefully they will be rotated between the two areas.

I scanned the enclosure for her, and saw her sleeping on the ground by the shift door to the lower level. After hearing that she liked the lower level, I felt bad she was sleeping by the door, seemingly waiting for it to open so she could go in. I don't know, obviously just my thought. I said, Hi Violet. She continued sleeping, so I waited hoping to eventually see her face. I was looking at the phone for something, when about a minute later, I heard patter, and turned my head. She had come over, right up to the fencing to greet me! It was so sweet! and I'm lucky their footies make a good slapping sound on the cement, or I wouldn't have seen her.

Hi Kim!

My video, includes overview of enclosure:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=GQ6nlpw8RxI&si=nD05WozDHm5twf-Y

In case you think the Fossa are new to the Zoo, they have been here near six years. Finally getting to adding photos and video links.

Also on Halloween day, I got lucky and was told the new Przewalski Horses were out, so I went over to see them. I've had physical limitations last couple months, so I haven't been that far in awhile. When I first walked up, their neighbors, the Peccary ladies were lined-up close to the fence, trying to get a look at them!

They are beautiful! They seem a bit shy, but when I talked to them they stood and looked at me. So, shy, but curious I think.

Here's the video of my first view. You will hear that I had not previously learned how to pronouce this species, which is lame, since I've known for some time they were being acquired. So for those who are not familiar like me, Przewalski is pronounced, "Shuh-vahl-skee".

https://youtube.com/watch?v=g7_l-1BZs8Y&si=f_nAnVpVHFiVb-em

Our two ladies are Solongo age 14, and Bajkit, pronounced "Bah-keet", she is 19 years old and the darker of the two. Get to know them, as the Zoo will most likely change their names.

This video from Brookfield Zoo where they moved to SFZoo from. When Claudia first arrived at SFZoo she was housed there, but taken off exhibit over four years ago.

It was a surprise when I happened upon her sunbathing at the Puente. Claudia is a special friend who I spend extended time with. She will always comes to greet me, and just hang next to me for as long as I will stay there with her.

I have a nice video of her flying down to greet me, but for some reason saving to upload to YouTube isn't happening now. There have been Animal updates I've wanted to make in the recent times and just didn't get that far. So, working backward, I'll start with Halloween day.

One of my besties is my Farm Friend Slider. Born October 31, 2009, Slider celebrated his 14th Birthday on Halloween.

I inquired with a Keeper several days prior, to see if he could have Birthday treats. It had been years since, and it was about time to start celebrating his Birthday again. I was thankful everyone was on board, and very happy to get to once again spend Slider's special day celebrating with him while he enjoyed his cake and other treats.

Here are two of my videos from Slider's Birthday party!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=j8F9nVCVylKxzO0u&v=SE0-A720FqM&feature=youtu.be

https://youtube.com/watch?v=af8jqs9BImI&si=0dyWtjMj-LsIen4w

I Love this boy and so happy to see him! It had been awhile, usually I have to talk to him from the barrier fence in the parking lot. The only place to view him, is in the sand corral and I've seen him there less than half my visits over the past several years. He has been kept most often out of public view, either in the grass corral or his bedroom area. He often is in one of those places all day, only coming out to the sand corral on average about four times a week. In my opinion he doesn't get rotated enough. He definitely shouldn't be in the back grass corral or bedroom for entire days. He should have access to the other areas for at least a couple hours each day. Not only for his own enrichment, but he has lots of friends who rarely get to see him. Management needs to make this happen.

He used to go to the front area on red barn side, but hasn't been given access there since his birthday four or five years ago. He loved it! See him running along side his friend Lee in my video below. In the clip, you can hear his Keeper say, "it's exercise" and "he loves people". Why he's been denied these varied enrichments for so long is beyond me.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WhQfyLhy8C0&pp=ygUPbGVvODExc2Ygc2xpZGVy

He also had access to the yellow barn contact yard (one time?), when the farm reopened after the shutdowns. Another great space for his friends to visit with him!

Seeing my cute friend after no face time for months. To say that this news was exciting, is an understatement. Anyone who knows me, knows I had bond with our beloved Tapir, Goober. I loved my friend Goobie, and miss him everyday. He was the first Tapir I knew, and immediately became endeared to the species. He is the reason this blog is named, I Am Not An Anteater, and his photo is the background.

When there is a new Acquisition, I try to learn everything I can about that Animal. Mostly for my own knowledge, but since the begining of my research on all the Animals in 2008, I also enjoy sharing what I've learned. One of the things I am passionate about, and no surprise by this, is knowing their original names. I'm a name purest, and have made it no secret how I feel about name changing. I'm sure the Zoo will waste no time Re-Naming him, so I'm here to tell you, his name is Pacha!

I immeadiately found it was most likely two-year old Pacha who would be moving here from his birth Zoo in New Orleans. I had planned to share info right away, but there is still tough stuff going on in my life, that either puts me at momentarily motivated, or doing nothing at all. So here we are, a month+ later and Pacha is already here and out on view.

Within an hour of hearing he was out, I changed my errand route direction and headed to the Zoo. Overcome with emotion, I had tears streaming, at the possibility of seeing a Tapir again. All I saw was his little backside peeking out from behind the lean-to, while disappointing not to see his face, I was happy just knowing he was there.

Get to know Pacha. I'm personally glad he chose this name. Pacha is translated in the native Quechua language, to "world above", which is rooted in Incan Mythology of the Cosmos. I love the meaning. One can hope, Pacha will be able to keep his name, but one can not hold their breath on that.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mItsN6Z0xjU

Yesterday I saw that his home Zoo gave him a send-off, with Going Away themed Enrichment.

https://m.facebook.com/story.php/?id=100077266899460&story_fbid=347113224540905

Hoping to get lucky and see his face this week!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... And Other Visit Updates
Yesterday was my first Zoo visit in over two months. I've had the Sciatica for seven weeks and finally felt I could hobble around a bit slowly. I had a list of new things to check out, so my visit was concentrated on that.

The most important thing was to meet Lulu, the female Lion who moved here a couple months ago from Lee Richardson Zoo. I had been waiting months for our Jasiri to get a companion, and was bummed not to see her when she first had access outside. So I'm happy to have caught her out! Reportedly she is out mornings, then Jasiri rotates out.

Before even seeing her face, I saw her from the back and thought wow, she's huge! Maybe because in recent years our two beloved females were aging and body mass shifted? I don't know, but she seems like a biggin' and is beautiful! Not long after I arrived, she came to the viewing window. She was very interested in the kids. She started doing the running action on the glass. I have only seen this with Jahari (Jasiri's father) and Kimani (Jasiri's aunt, now at Idaho Falls Zoo) in the past, and not in years.

https://youtube.com/shorts/WK56IW_sYis?si=ZN0Oe_zv20pGIt8p

https://youtube.com/shorts/kCAakaQ6TRU?si=-qfUrCCzQORJa0Ps

She did not have a face to face viewing area where she came from, which was her birth Zoo, so this is completely new for her. She definitely has alot of energy! I'm looking forward to lots of great play action when she and Jasiri are finally introduced and together on view.

Of note at Cats, there were metal barriers at the main doors to the Lions House. I inquired and was told that the LH has been open on occasion. Very happy to hear that. I had been hoping at some point in the future that would happen, because it's a shame that no one gets to experience the inside of that historic building. Even a monitored hour a day would be good.

Another Cat update, Tica the female Ocelot reportedly remains elusive. I have still never seen her. I was told she came from places where she was allegedly not on public view, and possibly never had outdoor access. If even one is accurate information, it makes sense that adjusting will take time.

Also a no show on view was the new Fox, who is in the old Patas Monkey exhibit, most recently occupied by the Eagle. I heard he has not yet been seen in the enclosure. He has access but there are lots of hiding areas. I have not confirmed identity, but he came from Sacramento Zoo and seems to have been their only one, so he may be Lando, seen here in a video on SacZoo social media. If this is him, he was an Ambassador Animal and from this video it seems like maybe has never been on public view in an enclosure.

video screencap

https://m.facebook.com/video.php/?video_id=275574810375643

I will happy to see him when he presents himself. I love Foxes and the only ones I've seen, hijaked my walk at the Botanical Gardens many years ago and freaked me out, causing me to run from them like Barnaby Jones lol! It has been a fantasy idea that the Zoo would rescue a small group from the Fur Farm industry. So seeing him will be nice. It's noted in the video that he came from a rescue situation as a young kit. Always wonderful to see homes provided for Wildlife in need.

I also checked out the part of the Madagascar exhibit that is now open. Violet, the female Fossa did not show herself. My impression of the enclosure for the Fossa is on track with what I thought it would be. Too small! More on my opinions and photos in the next post. Might be a few days, so check back.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... Alas, I can not.

How is it possible that anyone in the San Francisco Zoological Society, or the Recreation and Park Department (the supposed managing entities), think Director Tanya Peterson is doing a good job, when she has failed (for fifteen years!) at something so basic as keeping the outside of the Zoo in good condition and attractive to and for Visitors?

I haven't been to the Zoo in over two months, who knows how long it's looked like this. When the graffiti that read, "Zoos Are Animal Prisons", was there, it took me alerting staff a week after I'd seen it. Again, who knows how long that was there.

This was the sight today. It has to be documented.

I took a video a couple weeks ago of the current condition of the meadow. I'm not much into politics, but have known of her since my teens. She became Mayor of The City when I was in high school. I saw her once while she was campaigning for an earlier political position, when her car stopped outside Value Giant on Geary a few blocks from my home, as I was approaching the store. She got out and started shaking the hands of people on the street.

In 2011, Feinstein's husband Richard Blum, not only helped with the purchase price of seven babie female Bison to join the existing ladies, he reportedly donated $50,000 to make repairs to their home. I was lucky to meet the resident Ladies as babies, they were offspring that were born at the Bison Paddock in the 1980s. It was an incredible experience being able to watch them their whole lives.

While tracking the exact years for this post, I read that in 1984, Blum gifted Feinstein, his wife, two of the Bison that eventually gave birth to the calves I knew in the 80s. In 2020, years after the last senior Lady sadly left us, Blum again donated $50,000 for the acquistion of five yearling females.

I thank Richard Blum and Dianne Feinstein posthumously, for making it possible that these beautiful Beings have been a part of my life. It wasn't something I had previously thought of, but it is completely where I've been for years. ...

"I have zero tolerance for what Director Tanya Peterson has done to our Zoo."

There was a day last week when I received information from multiple sources of things going on at the Zoo. The level of disgraceful bullshit all at once was very upsetting. After I commiserated about them to another friend, I hung up and realized I had tears in my eyes. I'm just very sad at the state of our Zoo.

One of the things happening, is another non-Animal installation. A friend who was there last week sent me this photo.

Apparently, Director Tanya Peterson thinks art installations and gardens are a priority over adding Animals to the collection. I shouldn't be surprised, her decisions over the years have made it very clear that she has no clue how to manage an Animal Care Facility.

In recent years we have lost senior Animals, had many Animals transferred out or moved off public view. Visitors constantly complain there are no Animals. This is a Zoo, what the hell is she thinking? What the hell does she think people come to see? Pay to see?

As I visit the Zoo in my mind, these are the minimum that should be done, before any non-Animal thing is added to the Zoo.

First of all, what the hell is the plan for the pit she allowed to be created for "Madagascar", that has sat there for over five years? For that project we lost many Monkey species. ... So, let's start with Monkeys. We need more Monkeys! ... We need a better habitat for the Orangutans. ... We need a new aviary for Hercules the Hornbill to be back on view. ... We need the netting over Flamingos completed. ... We need proper netting over Meerkats and Prairie Dogs. ... We need Kangaroos in the Walkabout. The back barrier in Walkabout that borders Sloat has needed a permanent fence for over seven years. ... We need Southgate renovated and housing a few Hoofstock species. ... We need appropriate housing for both Sloths. ... The list is probably endless if you consider things the Animal Care Staff would like for the Animals they care for.

And what about fixing the damn perimeter fence that has been in shambles for decades so the Zoo looks inviting and not downtrodden?

And if we're going for non-Animal related stuff, in addition to the fence, what about installing some outdoor lighting throughout the Zoo in case there's ever an emergency at night? What a concept!

What we don't need is more gardens and art installations. I don't know if this new art installation is being paid for with Zoo funds or is being funded by a donor with locked funds, but either way, these things should not be happening before necessary Animal related projects. Allegedly this project is costing six figures. That is outrageous.

Director Peterson cried poor that there was no money to net over two grottos for the Orangutans, which would have made that habitat renovation optimum for them, and not have to include the eyesore metal bridge. Yet there continues to be funds for gardens that cost ten's of thousands of dollars.

Let's talk about those gardens. A new one has been in progress along the path from gate house the carousel. Dont get me wrong, the gardens are beautiful, but unnecessary when the Zoo needs stuff related to being a Zoo aka an Animal Care Facility. Allegedly many of the gardens are funded by locked donations. I've written about this years ago, as I found it disturbing that Donors will donate money specifically for non-Animal projects like gardens, art installations, and even trips for the Director, but not to actual Animal needs and necessary enclosure builds. This is a Zoo, what are the Zoological Society Members who donate to non-Animal related stuff thinking?? The Society is the managing entity of the Zoo and this happens? They don't even live up to their responsibility of over seeing the Director's management, prefering to just defer to and support whatever she does. It's all morally disgraceful. I don't understand the whole management structure (including the lack of management responsibility from the SF Rec and Park Dept) and how it's gotten away with allowing the downfall of our Zoo.

Shame on all of them.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... Jasiri not getting a party is a bit surprising, though not shocking, since it's been my experience that parties in the Cat dept are inconsistent. Why is that?

At least he got the best gift, his girlfriend Lulu arrived in July, ending six months of him being alone. Even though they couldn't be together yet, at least they had visual of each other.

Lulu spent a month inside the Lion House, since there was no outside yard for her. More bad planning on the Zoo's part, both starting Jaguar proofing in the only other Cat yard, knowing Lulu was on her way, and the ridiculous mismanagement decision in the first place to reduce the number of Cat yards.

Contrary to reasoning put out there, allegedly this expansion of Cat yards was not an AZA mandate. There could have been one double size and the other two left alone. Which would have left room to bring back a Tiger. The Cats could have rotated and all still got to use the double wide. Apologies for the digress.

Now done with quarantine, Lulu has been given access to the outside, rotating with Jasiri the last few mornings! I cried when I heard she had arrived, so happy for Jasiri, so I'm bummed I haven't seen her yet. Hopefully soon.

The Zoo posted Lulu at the window. Love seeing that she is confident and coming to up close viewing.

As you can see, the usual has happened, the Zoo changed Lulu's name. So Disrespectful. ... If Director Peterson had more respect for the Animals, she would find alternate ways to raise money, other than to sell off the Animals identities. Geez, if she had any care for the Zoo in general, she would do fundraising of any kind, instead of crying poor for Animal needs. Disgraceful. Again, I digress. Fifteen years of seeing the Zoo struggle in her mismanagement has worn me out. I have zero tolerance for what Director Tanya Peterson has done to our Zoo.

Looking forward to when Jasiri and Lulu have been successfully introduced and they are together. That said, I have not only had follow-up thoughts about the Petition since my last post, but a few other Zoo issues have come to my attention in the past day. These issues are not only bad, but sad. After talking to a friend about them, I hung up and felt tears welling up. Our Zoo is literally dying at the hands of Tanya Peterson. Will anyone help save it?

While I believe in Petitions, this one is still curious to me. When I have done Petitions, the site I used, had a different format. That format included two things missing in this one, who the Petition is targeted at, and the list of signatures. In my opinion, both these things seem necessary for the Petition to go any further than just garnering signatures.

Aside from making up an anonymous tag as the person who started it, there is no one targeted as the recipient of the Petition. Is the Petitioner asking Tanya Peterson directly to resign? Has the Petitioner sent this to Tanya Peterson? Does the Petitioner want the Zoological Society to ask for her resignation? Has this been sent to the Zoological Society? To the Rec and Park? Or as it appears, is the Petitioner asking the signers, public, staff, et al to make this demand? The Petitioner needs to post an update that clairifies their plan and goal.

The other thing that makes the Petition feel like it could be less impactful is that all signatures aren't shown. On the Petition site I've used, every signature is visible, with anonymous signatures listed as, "name withheld". The Petition currently has 637 signatures, but only the 12 with comments show. So, that's 625 signatures that we are left to assume are anonymous. I have been told that alot of staff are signing. Having those signatures listed and noted as name withheld, with location and option to comment, in my opinion is important to the legitimacy of that tally.

In light of the amount of signatures, I plan to try and get everything I have in draft and new items, posted, to capitalize on any progress this Petition could result in. I unfortunately don't think there will be much, just because of how this Petition was set-up and especially the lack of a face to it. Both seem like things that would prevent it from having legs. Hopefully I'm wrong and the Petitioner has a plan.

That said, as usual, I may be the only one working for this effort. I'm in pain with the sciatica, and can't sit up long to type on computer, so I'm writing with thumbs on the tablet. At least I'll be trying to do something to help this along, by continuing to document all the mismanagement that supports the Zoo's desperate need to have Tanya Peterson removed as the Director of our San Francisco Zoo.

I also want to fast track a Survey I had eventually planned. I've used Survey Monkey before, and it posts results anonymously, as well has decent comment boxes. If Staff is signing this Petition, I hope a good amount will fill out the survey, as their words are the only confirmation that can attest to what is really going on at our San Francisco Zoo, and this is a way for their words to be heard. Ultimately, it needs to be the voices of Staffers who will be able to help end the reign of Tanya Peterson killing our Zoo.

Related post:

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2023/08/the-petition-to-remove-san-francisco.html

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... Then life crap came my way once again. This year has seriously been the cliche take one step forward, get knocked two steps back. Anyway, I didn't get to that goal, which was not just a blog goal, but a set-up for a bigger plan to help the Zoo. Now the universe has screwed me again, and the past eight days I've been laid up with sciatica pain which is new to me and excruciating in case anyone has never had this. I can barely move without severe pain and medication is not fully masking the pain. With this not subsiding for so many days, I can't help but feel like this is a permanent thing and like I'm never going to be able to be productive again. I hope I'm wrong.

That all said, it is no secret this blog has been a place intended to document all the fails at the Zoo. My recent posts are clearly geared toward focusing and outting Zoo Director Tanya Peterson on fifteen years of Mismanagement, including Animal Cruelty, that has had the Zoo circling the drain her entire reign 2008-2023...

All anyone has to do is scroll through this blog archives and the majority of my 834 posts is proof of Director Peterson's moral crimes against our Zoo. A couple I just pulled, are two that focus on replacing Director Peterson. The one from 2017 got her panties in a twist and she revoked my Membership for the second time.

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2017/05/what-needs-to-happen-to-replace.html

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2023/05/for-lack-of-better-title-our-failing.html

Unfortunately no one in the San Francisco Zoological Society, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Dept. or the City of San Francisco, cares to help the Zoo. Not one person who has the authority to replace Director Peterson, cares enough to open their eyes and learn what's been happening the last fifteen years. They are content with letting her do whatever she wants, as long as their lazy asses don't have to deal with the Zoo, unless they are coming to a cocktail party.

So, that bring us to today. I hobbled in pain to prepare lunch, and checked the phone for call back from my doctor. Saw someone had sent me a Petition link.

https://www.change.org/p/demand-the-resignation-of-tanya-peterson-director-of-san-francisco-zoo?

My next comments are not meant to be critical or dissuade anyone from signing this. I encourage everyone to sign.

Upon first look at this, it's very curious. That screencap I included shows what had me go, "Huh". Considering I am not aware of anyone, over all the years that I've been monitoring, documenting and rallying for our Zoo, not one other person, member of the public, who has been vocal about helping our Zoo. So, yeah it's curious when the Petitioner doesn't include a name, only " You should know" and leads with, "a concerned citizen and frequent visitor". My first reaction is someone is trying to make it seem like I started this Petition. Before I go on, be very clear, I did not. Doing a Petition has been a thought, and curiously my draft of it uses the words "Demand Resignation", but I still hadn't got to that point in my plan of action. In case it's not well-known, I Do Not do anything anonymous. I have put my name and face to everything I've done in regards to the Zoo.

So, as I read on, while some of the content are things I've noted in blog posts, the grand gist of this petitioners mission is focused on non-animal issues, which would differ from anything I'd put forward. The non-animal issues mentioned are a big part of why Director Peterson needs to be replaced, but the animal cruelty issues considering the Zoo is an animal care facility are equally important.

One of the issues mentioned in the Petition, I covered in a recent post. The appointment of Vitus Leung, VP of HR to Deputy Director. An outrageous move of favoritsm, when there is an exceptionally qualified member of staff, that should have been promoted to that position. *** If a Zoological Society board memebr wants to know who that is, contact me. It would be in the best interest of the Zoo.

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2023/07/former-vp-of-hr-is-now-deputy-director.html

Anyway, I support any efforts that move toward replacing Director Peterson. My only concern is the Society's incapability of finding an ideal replacement. I think because of the unique situation with our Zoo in it's management structure, in addition and most importantly, having to fix so many fails created by Director Peterson, that the new Director should come from within the Zoo. Someone who already knows the Zoo. Not an outsider who doesn't know about the challenges of our Zoo. I'd vote for the person who I previously referenced, should have been promoted to Deputy Director. We're screwed if the person who was promoted ended up Director.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ... I love them. I feel bad about what happened to them, and believe they left us too soon. In my opinion, their deaths, at least Wishbone's, could have been avoided. So, when I saw it was Andean Bear Day, even though they brought me so many smiles, I thought of them with sadness.

Precious little Annie fell ill allegedly with a respiratory issue, but I heard that was clearing up, when she started having trouble standing up. She passed away while still in the hospital. At the time, 2010, losing Zoo Friends was new, and I don't remember investigating the specifics any further.

I had been uncomfortable with the Andean Bears living exclusively on concrete for some time. With the nature of Annie's passing, I was moved to crusade for Wishbone to get even just a small patch of grass. I had never done anything like that, but something needed to be done, to bring some comfort to his living situation.

I started a blog dedicated to my crusade. I also contacted members of the Zoological Society & Recreation and Park Dept. both failed managing entities of the Zoo.

This post goes into detail why I feel this was necessary. http://projectgetwishbonegrass.blogspot.com/2011/05/project-get-wishbone-grass.html

screencap from post dated March 7, 2012

titled, RIP Wishbone - SFZOO Bear Dies

After Years Of Living On Concrete

I will note that this was not news to Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, as in 2009, I sent her an email detailing my concerns. I believe if she had shown the Andean Bears some empathy, Annie and Wishbone would have lived longer lives.

Here is an excerpt:

http://projectgetwishbonegrass.blogspot.com/2011/05/andean-bear-grotto-letter-to-zoo.html

I hindsight after crusading for the Chimps, I feel there was more that I should have thought to do, but it was early in my advocacy missions, and thought I was doing what I could. I'm sorry Wishy for not doing more.

View precious Wishbone enjoying some Christmas Tree Enrichment here:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NzmqQ_M5rgs&pp=ygUVbGVvODExc2YgYW5kZWFuIGJlYXJz

I blame Zoo Director Tanya Peterson for many Animal cruelty situations, and a few deaths, Wishbone's being one of them. His death could have been avoided had she shown some compassion for his living environment. Director Peterson has failed in so many ways, but the one's that involve the lives of the Zoo's Animal Residents, is unconscionable and unforgivable.

**********

This past week was Shark Week, started years ago by the Discovery Channel and it's viewing celebration of Sharks. I'm reminded every year of the Awesome recognition our beloved female Lion Amanzi got, when I sent in her photo to the Discovery Channel and they picked it to be featured on their website, in their top favorites!

This photo is from 2010, when my friend Lee and I were making Enrichment Toys for the Cats every week. Lee picked the Under the Sea theme, and made this paper mache Shark, which Amanzi came out and ran straight for! She and Jahari, and the rest of the Cats had so much fun, and I'm so happy Discovery Channel recognized our precious Amanzi!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Blogger's Statement

"Personal Opinions and Facts presented publicly are Not against the law or any rules. ...
