Words Of A Politician and A Filmmaker - Why I Write This Blog

I wrote a completely new post a couple weeks ago.  Some recent things moved me and I thought my feelings would be a good lead-in to many of the posts I have in draft.  Time got away from me, and the outside world got to me.  So, Peace has been the priority, and even though the need to do so is constantly on my mind, opening up the blog has not been.

So many failed attempts to catch-up with blog posts.  Sometimes it seems I may never catch-up, because every week there seems to be more things to write about.  It's very frustrating, but more so, disconcerting.  It makes me sad. 

I want everyone to know, regardless of how long it takes me, how far behind I get, I will never stop being a voice for the Animals.  I will always watch, I will always question, I will always be vocal in an effort to right wrongs. 

Last Friday, while I watched the Victory Celebration after the Election winner was called, I felt a bit of ambition.  President Elect Joe Biden spoke of making a Better America.  The words that formed his sentiment resonated with me, as every thought I have, every post I write, the truth, the awareness, is all in hope that it will lend to making, a Better Zoo.

The other night I watched an interview with Robby Benson.  When I was a teenager, Robby was mostly known as an Actor.  I spent the summer of '79, on the set of his movie Die Laughing that was filmed here in the City.  Ironically, one of the first locations was behind the Zoo, in a large vacant sand dune area, where the scene of a Circus was set-up.  That experience became a foundation of a big part of my younger life.

In 2008 I finished working on a book about my teenage adventures. I have never done anything with it, as it coincided with a personal tragedy and I never got back to it.  Then, when I might have been able to work on publishing it, my mind was other places.  The last ten years have been spent watching, worrying and writing about the Zoo.  Not really what I wanted (or want) to do, but what has been presented to me at this point in life.

Ok, back to the reason I brought up Robby Benson.  Since the 70s he has taken on every aspect of filmmaking.  Watching his interview, he really has become a master of his craft. He spoke in regard to being directed and what he's learned.  "As a Director you shouldn't feel threatened when someone has an idea, ideas are great!  Even if its wrong, you can harness that idea and take that energy and aim it in a different direction and then even more ideas start to come."

His words related to many things that I've experienced during my twelve years of being immersed in the Zoo.  Initially I relayed ideas to the Director via what I mistakenly took as a welcomed email correspondence.  A Keeper at the time (2009) warned me to be careful, "She doesn't like other people's ideas."  I responded, curious why someone would be adverse to suggestions.  There has been several people over the years that have said the same thing to me, as Robby did about working with Film Directors. 

Much like our President Elect said in that November 7th speech about our Country, there are alot of things that need fixing at our Zoo. We have had twelve years of not so great things happen.  You only need to scan through the archives of this blog to see that.  Something needs to give for the Zoo to thrive in the right direction.  I continue to hope that my documentation for awareness, idea suggestions, and words of truth will be a source of that happening.

Safety Update - Why Was The Covid Safety Sign At Great Apes Taken Down?

One of the posts I have in draft is an expanded version of this, an update to safety issues I had.  For the purpose of Chimpanzee and Orangutan Safety,  I'm fast tracking this, as the next couple months might put them and the rest of us in the most vulnerable position.

Yesterday Mayor Breed announced that San Francisco was now at the purple level, the highest in Covid ranking.  While the City initially patted themselves on the back for a job well done by Residents, as that's what the numbers reflected, I was surprised because I don't see good behavior from the majority of people.  From what I've witnessed, the masses are mostly made up of self-entitled No Maskers who have kept this Pandemic in motion.  I am not surprised at all, that we are in the position we are.  With this in mind, and the probable middle finger given to gathering and traveling over the Holidays, this weekend through January in my opinion should be the time that those who do the right thing because they want to stay safe,  need to really ramp up your self protection.  Double Mask, please do not rely on a cloth mask, bandanna or gaiter to protect you.  Wear an N95 or surgical mask under your cloth covering, or add a filter.  Make sure you are handling your mask properly and washing cloth covering after each use.  Stay Safe people!

Ok, now for my Zoo related issues.  There are two.  One is Animal Safety and one is Visitor Safety.  

In my posts dated, August 11th (2) and 14th (1),  I wrote about my concerns for the barrier area around the Chimpanzee yard.  I was concerned when first news of Covid was out in March and the Zoo was still open.  Then the Zoo closed, and word was that path around the yard was closed to even unauthorized Zoo Staff.  I expected it to be closed when the Zoo ReOpened, and was surprised and upset that it wasn't.  After seeing visitors continually taking off their masks or not wearing properly, I waited to see if there would be any additions to safety in that area, after three weeks of none, I spoke with the person who has since allegedly been bumped to " Head of Safety".  I expressed two things.  One was that this was even happening considering the fact that there were portions of the perimeter where visitors are less than six feet from a Chimpanzee or Orangutan sitting at fencing. 

An effort was made to eliminate that issue, but frankly I found it ridiculous.  You can see their solution in the earlier blog posts mentioned.  Second, I suggested signs at both ends of the path, that noted that Chimpanzees and Orangutans are vulnerable to Covid just like Humans.

Since people are breathing on the Animals, as the minutes pass, I expected this simple and logical deterrent to be done by the next time I visited three days later, if not that day.  It was not.  The following week, I was happy to see signs, though not at the path entrances.  Signs saying similar were put up by the Keepers at the barrier fencing in two different places.  I thank them for taking the initiative, since Management didn't see it as a priority.  Curiously those signs went missing the following week.  Allegedly no one in Animal Staff removed them, so I ask Management, Why would you remove those signs?

To me it would seem that keeping the Animals as safe as possible from visitor mis-behavior would be a priority.  It often hasn't in the past, but during a health crisis, one would hope things would be different.  Unfortunately they are not.  So, I ask Management. Why would you not want to keep the Animals, especially the Apes at this vulnerable enclosure, as safe as possible?

Since the ReOpening July 13, the stream of people removing their mask for no reason, for eating and drinking, wearing it Pinocchio style, has been steady, Zoo-wide, but especially at this concerned area where the Great Ape yard is.  Members of the Public should not have to constantly call the ER line to report this.  Keepers should not have to, yet I hear their calls go out over the radio.  Management needs to do more to protect all the Animals, but again, especially these vulnerable Ape species that can just as easily contract the Covid virus as Humans.  Do more!  Do better!

The other thing that is in my opinion a big problem is the eating and drinking situation.  I wrote about this upset before, and I'm not the only one who has an issue with it.  First, people should not be able to eat and drink unmasked while walking around.  Staff says its not allowed, yet there is no signage that says otherwise and it's a constant sighting.  I understand needing to take a drink of water for hydration purposes, but even then, people should be instructed to at least move away from people and not facing others.  People now are just walking talking, drinking, eating, blowing possibly asymptomatic particles into the air.  I'm sorry, don't mean to sound nit picky, but I personally don't like walking into someone elses aerosol stream.  This also applies to those breathing on the Apes.  One woman recently was actually blowing them kisses unmasked.  

In addition to the walking about unmasked to stuff their cake holes, that whole area along the path of the cafe and other points in the Zoo with random tables, again, should not be allowed.  Just walking through there with people unmasked on both sides, facing out to path of people, feels like contamination alley.  Alot of the time people aren't even eating, just talking with others or on their phone.  In my original post about this, I made the suggestion in a blog post of having a designated dining area away from other visitors.  I suggested the area used by the Depot, which is the perfect location.  That area has remained unused. There is also another area that is unused.  I ask Management, Why is having a designated area not a viable option for those who are taking their masks off to eat and drink?  Contain them, so the people who keep their masks on and are trying to stay safe can walk the paths without being health assaulted.

Another suggestion, since people can't seem to follow rules, and are given too many warnings to do so, Rules should be posted and called attention to at check-in window.  Visitors agree to them at check-in and when they aren't following, out they go.  ... These are rules I'd like to see.

*Masks required at all times.  

*Eating only in Designated dining areas.  

*No walking and eating or drinking. Removal for quick drink, and away from other visitors.

*Maintain Distancing from other visitors. (Which no one does.)

So yea, in addition to the upset by the self-entitled No Maskers outside the Zoo, we got plenty inside.  It's so rude and disrespectful that people can't even follow rules and have any sense of right, at the very least in a controlled environment.  That said, the Zoo needs to do more to control these mis-behaviors, by posting signs at Apes and making designating dining areas. The check-in agreement is a good idea.  I have confirmed that there are other Zoos doing this.

We are over four months into this, the issues should have been identified and fine-tuned by now.  Instead in my opinion things have gotten lax.  I rarely see Security patrolling, unless they are called.  And calling the ER line still often goes to voicemail.  

This all said, the Zoo, is not any more unsafe for visitors than the Park, or other outdoor spaces.  Certainly more safe than any store, but that does not mean that things can't be safer for all.   Especially the Chimpanzees and Orangutans, who don't know there is a Pandemic and aren't wearing Masks.  Both species are smarter than Humans and if they did know, they would be Masked Up!

Maki - There's No Place Like Home!

I hadn't planned to write another post after Maki was safely home, but I thought I'd complete the series with the update that an arrest was made in Maki's kidnapping.  Most everyone should know by now, as it was a couple days ago.  Not many details have been released, I'm looking forward to hearing how this guy knew where to access the Lemur night quarters, if he had a connection at the Zoo, and what the motive was.  

I'm glad that I was online Thursday evening and following Maki's rescue and return to his caregivers, family and home.  Learning the news as it was coming in and documenting it in real-time was exciting.  No better feeling than to report wonderful news!

Aside from the obvious joy and relief that Maki was found safe, little James Trinh who spotted Maki outside his school, made me smile when he said, "Call The ZooKeeper!"  I'll never forget that line!

Praying Maki will recover from this traumatic experience with no lasting affects.  I was worried about Covid, and then hearing he was dehydrated, I worry about his Kidneys.   Seems like the kidnapper didn't give him any food or water.   My heart breaks for what he went through.

Last Bit Of Maki News For Tonight From ABC and NBC... Updated

Now that the News is doing a great job of reporting on Maki's return, I'll leave you all with that.  I'm sure there will be much more media attention to feed our souls with this wonderful close to an awful event.  You can check Twitter for stories, as "Maki" and "Daly City" are Trending in California!

It's been an emotional time and beyond thankful that Maki is safe and home.

I first read on ABC News that Maki was spotted by a five year old!  Bravo!  Thank you to little James Trinh and to his Dad for calling it in.  And to his Mom for the initial Tweet about Maki being found. This Family needs a free Membership!

Then NBC's Ian Cull took over on Twitter with first hand reports from the Family who spotted Maki.

"He says Maki wasn’t scared by the children, and was moving very slow. He was never threatening, and went calmly with animal control."

Glad that Keepers Lori and Kyle were there on scene with him. I'm sure Maki was happy to see them!  A great relief and ease of upset for everyone.

Some Details About How Maki The Lemur Was Found

Curiously, or maybe not, there has still not been an update from the Zoo that Maki has been found. ... Would have liked to have seen a semi-immediate post, something like, .. Maki has been Found!  No further details at this time, but Thank You for all the concern and good thoughts. ... I don't understand why it's been over three hours since the first Twitter post by a member of the public and the Zoo has not updated the worried public.  Disappointing.

Thank you to the member of the public who saw him and called the sighting in.  And to all involved in bringing him home.

Breaking News! - Maki Is Home!!! - Stolen Lemur Found Safe!

Crying tears of joy and relief!

As the sun set I thought, another night Maki not with his family.  Continued saying prayers and sending live his way.

I searched for news updates. None from Zoo or SFPD.  Then searched both on Twitter.  That was the ticket!

Saw this six minutes after it was posted.

No other details available at this time.

So happy!  He looks good. Hope he is found to be healthy and no lasting effects of this traumatic event.

Hoping they catch the Demon who took him.  Won't say anything further.  Those who know me know what I'm thinking.

Appeal To Whoever Stole Maki The Lemur - Read This!

I obviously don't know the motive behind this cruel crime, but I would bet the perpetrator does not know how to care for Lemurs.  I can only hope they care enough to keep him healthy and safe.

Was he taken to be a Pet?  To be sold into the Exotic Wildlife Trade?  Whatever the reason, caring for and feeding any Animal is an individual and delicate plan.  In Maki's case whoever has him, must know by now, he is of advanced age, which is even more concern that he is properly cared for.

Zoo's work close with Duke Lemur Center.  This page from their website refers to reasons why Lemurs do not make good Pets.  Below link I've copied some relevant text excerpts.

Lemur vet care is hard to find

Recently a pet lemur owner requested help diagnosing toxoplasmosis (a parasitic infection) via the DLC Facebook page, because “all the vets I work with don’t do exotics.” Even among exotic animal veterinarians, many refuse to see primates; those who do often know very little about lemurs’ diseases or how to treat them.

Caring for lemurs is hard work every day

... Even providing a lemur with a proper daily diet is complicated. Owners occasionally contact us, already having purchased a pet lemur, with no idea what to feed it. In one case, the owners of a ring-tailed lemur named Milo were feeding him pizza and ice cream. In a reality television show filmed in eastern North Carolina, a lemur is shown eating a slice of bacon.

That pet lemurs tend to have serious nutritional problems from being fed inappropriate diets exacerbates the problem of limited access to qualified veterinary care. Unfortunately this can lead to privately-held pet lemurs developing a host of illnesses, including obesity and diabetes, and dying prematurely.
