Enrichment and Soliciting Donations for Water Fountains

I have only a few posts in draft that I wanted to finish before the end of the year, and hopefully not have much to write about in the new year.  Then this.

This morning the Zoo Tweeted.  Side note, its actually interesting that I even get their tweets, as they blocked me on Twitter and Facebook years ago.  Ridiculous, as I can read them from an alternate account.  I only check their social media every few weeks, but since I've been allowed to view their their tweets, I now get email notification for them. ... So yea this ...

Let me first say, its not the issue, I am horrified by what plastic is doing to our Ocean Wildlife.  I completely support, all efforts to help end this dire problem, but in this case its once again the position of priority the Zoo takes in things that irks me.  Maybe I'll be the only one bothered by this, regardless, here goes.

So, my initial reaction was that this request for donations for this, is Outrageous.  As I wrote in a previous blog post, there are so many things the Zoo needs, for the Animals, that when I see things like this, my mind just doesn't get it.  Donors lock their donations, to be used for specific things, in my opinion, if its not to help Animals already there and in need, its a vanity project.  So to ask for donations from the public for this, which we already have one, maybe two, is a head shaker.  When do the Bears, Black Rhino and Hippo get secure barriers that people can't hang their kids over and put those Animals lives at risk?  When do we get funds for that?

Additionally, what about Enrichment.  I had a whole blog post in draft about Enrichment, but decided not to include it in the ones I wanted to get done by the end of the year.  I've written alot about Enrichment in the past, including putting forth many ideas. While I have seen the efforts for Enrichment go up some in recent times, from the research I do on the subject, it doesn't seem to be near what other Zoos seem to be doing.

But by all means, lets build some water fountains.
