Here's your weekly Lion/Panda ponder, to keep the Lion Eviction situation active.
On June 9, the Zoo made a post to their social media accts...
> "Jasiri, our 10-year-old male African lion, recently underwent a comprehensive wellness exam, and we’re pleased to report he is in good health for a middle-aged lion.
Jasiri was very cooperative for a voluntary anesthesia injection, allowing our veterinary team to safely complete a full suite of planned diagnostics on the 460-pound lion. His physical exam showed he was in great physical condition, with no significant abnormalities detected, and, of course, he has a great hairdo! Male lions are known for their iconic manes, which are unique to each individual and can signal everything from age and health to social status. X-rays and a brief abdominal ultrasound likewise revealed no concerning findings.
As previously reported, Jasiri does have a historical diagnosis of a congenital spinal malformation identified when he was just one-year-old. This condition appears clinically stable and well-managed at this time.
Routine wellness exams are an important part of ensuring the Zoo’s animals receive the highest standard of care, helping us monitor their health and well-being throughout their lives. We’re proud to say Jasiri’s health report looks good!" ... <
Wonderful to hear Jasiri is HEALTHY!!!
What does this exam, at this time mean?
I don't know how often the Lions get "routine wellness exams", in this case meaning, whether this was a regularly scheduled exam, or one needed to proceed in the transfer of Our Lions out of their home to another Zoo. Lulu, the female, who (as far as I know), doesn't have something that would be considered a pre-existing health flag, seemingly didn't have an exam. So, I'm assuming Jasiri's was to determine his health status for transfer.
In my opinion, that means two things. Jasiri's excellent report means he is all clear for a transfer. But, it also means he is not presenting any health concerns, and rushing to move Our Lions is not necessary at this time, or in the foreseeable future.
So, again, if the Zoo is maintaining that the Lions need to move for future "health concerns", and not to make way for Pandas, then Why can't there be a fundraising drive started now to raise funds for the upgrades needed if and when the time comes for a need to prevent Lions accessing the moat? There is seemingly enough time to do so since Jasiri is currently in "...great physical condition..."
In my opinion, the "health concern" reasoning really is a hypothetical possibility, and most likely no more of an aging issue than any other Big Cat that has lived out their life in these same yards. And certainly more of a hypothetical than the Zoo actually getting Pandas, which is really more of a fantasy,
So, Why are there no efforts to raise funds for Lions? It really can mean only one thing. No need because even if they had the money, the move is all rooted in Pandas.
Frankly, it amazes me, No, it puzzles me, that there have been no fundraising efforts (other than the Entry Brick sale?) for obvious other needs, let alone larger projects like, the future vacancy of Triple Grotto, and that broken down Perimeter Fence. It appears fundraising is reserved for their Panda obsession.
There have been so many missed opportunities for raising funds, not just in the eighteen years of previous mismanagement, but in the ten months since the changeover. So many ideas that could bring in money, large and small. I just don't get it.
So yea, it's seemingly all about Pandas. There is no other reason that Our Lions can not live out their lives, where all the other Big Cats before them did.
I noted recently that I had been doing some info gathering via Chat GPT and Google AI, into Panda acquisitions in US Zoos, and Our Zoo's Financial issues. I still have to read through that information, and pull necessary notations to share.
One of the things I read in regard to acquiring Pandas is that the agreement for China to send Pandas, is allegedly just of "intent to send". Allegedly China does not actually commit to sending Pandas until an enclosure is built and inspected. If China has any issues, they will not approve sending Pandas.
Since the Zoo has been reported as stating they are hoping for Pandas by early 2028, getting started on Panda housing seems like it would be imminent. So, time will tell if that aligns with Our Lions departure.
My prediction is the Zoo will start renovation on the Lion House Interior first, and within months after the Lions are transferred out. This will call the least attention to the fact that they are prepping for Pandas so soon after evicting our poor Lions.
It Amazes and Disgusts me that Zoo Leadership (Board, CEO, et al), is willing to destroy The Lion House, destroy the landscape of the Zoo, and foremost, Lose Our Lions, all for Pandas. All on the assumption they might get Pandas. The whole thing truly is a blind obsession.

I used to use (search) labels, but too often forget. I started noting "Hot Topic" in title, but fell lax on that. Now I'm just going to add labels, keywords, etc., here at the bottom with hashtags. Does it help in searches, who knows.
