I've had this post in draft for near a month. I previously posted about The City's Coyotes in five posts between July 5 & September 8, in the wake of the Botanical Garden tragedy. There were circumstances (and upset) surrounding that event that warranted multiple posts, but that has not been the only Coyote related tragedy recent times.
In the first week of August, at Baker Beach, and the end of September, at Crissy Field, The City Coyotes killed four Dogs. Reading the first Dog's Parent relive watching his Babie be attacked and killed, was horrifying. My heart broke for this poor Dog and his family. The horror of watching that happen is unfathomable to anyone who has a furbabie in their family. I can't even imagine it.
I've wanted to recognize the tragedy that has touched these non-human companions and their families. What has happened to those babies, is beyond heartbreaking. And it shouldn't be happening.
A couple weeks ago I was in a conversation with my neighbor, who's Dog I adore. As we ran down neighborhood dramas, he brought up the recent Crissy Field tragedy where three Dogs were killed by Coyotes, within ten days. We also talked about the Baker Beach and Botanical Garden tragedies. He talked about his fears walking his Dog. He has seen Coyotes, but thankfully never had any interactions. Though he noted, if there was, he would be in the mix, doing damage to save his Babie. I fully agreed. My Mama adrenaline would kick in and so help any Being that posed a threat to my Babie. As we talked about it, I thought, while there would be no stopping me in protecting my Babie, as an Animal lover, it was uncomfortable to imagine. It doesn't change what my actions would be, but I don't like to think about harm to any Animal. We as urban citizens, shouldn't have to.
I have Animals in the Park that I've been endeared to, that have been victims of the Coyotes. So, I've had a range of feelings. In one sense, I'm angry and sad that they have killed my Duck Friends. In another I'm sickened that a Coyote Pup was needlessly killed. In another my heart is breaking for the innocent Dogs who have lost their lives. I'm empathetic to all the events, including the horrible thoughts of the actions I'd take to protect my Babie. Mine is a Cat, so I'm glad he is safe inside, because I be really anxious if I had to be out daily with Predators lurking.
That said, It's a serious problem when you have packs of them surrounding humans and their Pets, not just a lone one, which is dangerous itself. That's terrifying. The account of one Pet Parent's event had them noting, that the pack wouldn't back off. So, what then? ... Maybe The City who allowed these wild predators to multiply to this point, should be reinbursing Pet Parents for Spiked Vests and Bear Spray.
Pet Parents have not been put in a fair position. Is there blame for what's happening? Over fifteen years ago, a Gardener I knew educated me about the Coyotes in Golden Gate Park. I had no idea they were living there. He estimated at that time, there were less than twenty. Knowing nothing about them or this potentially growing situation, I emailed the RecPark, questioning what the population, rather reproduction management plan was. I was told there wasn't one. I thought not trying to birth control with med laced meat, or even TNR the males, was outrageous. This was an urban environment with pocket gardens. I thought, What happens when they breed every year? Well, here we are, many years later with an approximate 80% population increase. I don't support culling, so co-existing is now the only solution.
So, Pet Parents need to keep their Dogs leashed (and Cats inside), and everyone needs to be responsible with their behavior in regard to not habituating the Coyotes to humans, for the safety of all. Not feeding, not leaving food out, it's all similar to guidelines when you live in Bear Country. I just hope people will do what it takes to Protect all the vulnerable Furbabies out there who need outdoor fun.
AND, there should be none of this self-entitled, irresponsible bullshit that I saw in an sfgate article... THIS gets Animals killed. Both Pets and Coyotes.
Bless All the Souls Lost in these Tragedies.
