New Lion News! - Jasiri's New Girlfriend Identified!

I learned two things yesterday that I couldn't share til I was near 100% sure about. One detail, had me busy last night compiling a list of female Lions who could possibly be Jasiri's new companion.  I had sixteen on that list.  After some research this morning on each one, I narrowed my list to four.

I just saw the Joint Zoo Committee Agenda for this months meeting next week. Based on that, I'm pretty sure I just confirmed this beautiful little girl from my short list, will be headed here, and hopefully soon.  Tears of joy are flowing, I'm so happy for Jasiri.  I can't wait for her to get here!

Meet Lulu!

The first thing I noticed when I saw her is that she's a blondie, like Jasiri and his Mama Sukari.  Her Mama and two brothers appear to have the light gene as well.  When I first saw Sukari, her stunning coloring stood out.  I saw her at a distance and thought she resembled a Mountain Lion.  One of her daughters gave birth to a white cub, though he eventually turned blond.

Lulu was born at Lee Richardson Zoo in Kansas, along with four brothers, on May 17, 2015.  Both she and Jasiri are eight years old this year.  It will be wonderful to see him have a companion his age to play with.  She has lived her whole life with her Mama and Papa, so I hope she won't have too difficult a time adjusting to this huge change.

I'm sure Sukari will be resting peacefully once her boy is no longer alone.

I hope she can quarantine on exhibit in the C/D Cat yard.  Even though there has been conflicting information on whether the Jaguar will eventually move into that space, I hope the Zoo will hold off on that (and possibly acquiring a female Jaguar) until full introduction between Jasiri and Lulu is complete.  With limited Cat Yards, this seems the only way to allow Lulu a decent amount of space until she begins sharing A/B Yard with Jasiri.

I noted the Yards the way I did because it's the logical space for each, not because that's what the Zoo intends to do.  Jasiri and Sukari have lived in A/B almost exclusively for a year, I think he should stay there.  And, he does like the windows and heated rock.  I mentioned in a  previous post I hadn't seen him at the window in a longtime, but that's changed.  As for C/D, I think the straight across length of that space would benefit a species like the Jaguar more, as they are runners.  Anyway, just my opinion.

With all the new Cat news, will I ever get to that damn Madagascar post before it's fifth year in draft moves to six?

It's All Happening At Cats!

So, a week ago today I learned that the male Jaguar, Tikal was going to be temporarily housed in Cat E, the original Snow Leopard area where the Twins were living. The Twins have been moved to an off exhibit enclosure at FCC. ... There is still conflicting information whether the move truly is temporary, and he will eventually move into one of the expanded Cat yards, or whether E will be his permanent home.

On Monday I was told Tikal would be moved to the enclosure the next day.  Hoping to catch a glimpse of him, I went round on Tuesday, but learned he wasn't in quarantine as some staff thought, but on his way from Sacramento.  I finished a good walk round and went by in case he got there and was possibly let out into enclosure to stretch his legs after being crated and on the road.  The van was arriving as I approached, so I watched them unload the crate, and waited a bit, but gate never opened.

Welcome Tikal!

There was an event scheduled that evening for donors, so I figured they were probably waiting for that, so to get a first glance.   On cue like that should not be depended on, and as such I heard he never came out.

He also never came out the three hours I circled about on my walk round yesterday.  I tried, and hoped as the sun shined brighter it would lure him out, but it didn't.  I was told he came out in early am for a quick sniff of his new home, but went back to night quarters.  Can't wait to meet him, fingers crossed for next week!

I posted an update to a previous post when I got home Monday, as I had learned a few things, related to information I posted.

>> Updated 5.9.23 ... I have learned that while this pair was a breeding pair at Sacramento Zoo, their union was allegedly unsuccessful. This aligns with why only the male has been acquired by SFZoo.  So, I'm assuming maybe this pair is being split-up, and a compatible female is still being identified. <<

While circling the area, I was also unsuccessful in catching a glimpse of the new lady Ocelot, Tica.  I've hear she was only seen out once.  I read that she was not on public view in last two previous homes, so that explains her shyness.  Might be a long time before we see her.

In encouraging news, it seems a companion for Jasiri could be happening very soon!

Status At Big Cats > Updated 5.9.23

As of two weeks ago, male Lion Jasiri was still alone, and the second expanded Cat Yard remained empty.

Here is my post from last month regarding Jasiri.

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2023/03/concerns-for-our-lone-lion-how-long.html

At that time there seemed to be mixed knowledge of the future of Cats at our SFZoo.  Will they or won't they acquire a companion for Jasiri, which is my main concern, and another Cat species for the empty enclosure.

My take on the lack of information, is that it's rooted in the mismanagement cog that is the lack of communication to and among staff. I've asked this question on posts before and I'll ask it again, Why is everything a secret?  If upper management is actively searching for a companion for Jasiri, why isn't that common knowledge?

That all said, it was pointed out to me last night that this appeared on the Zoo's Auction site.

I was surprised to learn this as the long-time rumor has been that the Zoo Director allegedly did not want to aquire anymore Big Cats and specifically Tigers after losing our Tigers to San Diego.  That happened as a result of San Diego owned Teddy being moved to SF for breeding with our Jillian, but after several years that didn't happen, so allegedly SDZ repossessed Teddy, taking Jillian with him, as both were very high on genetically valuable list.

As you can see, as with every Animal that moves to SFZoo, the Jaguars will have their identity stolen and be renamed.  I hate it, and that's no secret!

This is the female, Sasha. ... See Update at end of post.

This is the male Tikal.

I am looking forward to meeting these two beauties.  I've been a long-time admirer of this species, but never had the pleasure of meeting a traditional colored Jaguar.  The Zoo had a black Jaguar named Sabrina for many years who was a favorite of mine.

I encourage you to preserve their identity and greet them using their real names.

And now we wait for news of a companion for Jasiri.

Saturday July 14,2012 - Teddy Bear Festival

The Zoo's annual Teddy Bear Festival.  What can I say that doesn't sound like a broken record in regards to Enrichment Toy provisions.

I'll start by saying the Grizzly Girls had a wonderful time!  They were really worked up with excitement while waiting to be let into the Gulch for their treats.   Seems they knew something more than usual was up, because I've never heard them vocalize as I did today.

Any of the Animals are excited when there is something new in their space.  New usually mean an Enrichment of some sort.  I have a previous post "marker" for an Enrichment piece that explains different types of Enrichment.  I just haven't gotten to it yet.  That said, what I write about now is in regard to Enrichment Toys and Foraging, in regards to this event.

In my opinion any Enrichment Toys that are put out, should be stimulating and somewhat challenging.  I hate to say it, but my friend Lee and I rocked at making Enrichment Toys and (yes I'm going there) I will say, we were Enrichment Toy making Extraordinaires!   We made items that varied in color, shape, and strength, all depending on what Animal we were making for.

Keeper Sandy did a great job putting the treats out, especially the placement of food items that were scattered and hidden for the Bears to find them by foraging.   The placement of food up in the waterfall area was particularly fun and a challenge for them and  I enjoyed watching that.

Honey on the window, always a favorite!

That said, I have to pick at the "Toy" items, which are no reflection on the Keepers as it is not their level that is responsible for supplying these items.   I don't know who's responsibility it is at this point, but the Zoo has two Staff Employee's whose job title includes "Enrichment", so I would assume it is their responsibility to procure and inspect the Items.

There were two boxes of the same size in the exhibit.  Below is two photos of one.

By the text I've included on the last photo, I'm sure you know where I'm going with this next paragraph!  Yes, I have a problem with how this box looks, its plain ugly.  Its not fully paint (the other one was paint more but still not fully), there's no real art/theme to it, its not sealed (for challenge purpose), its just awful.  You might think the Animals probably don't care, but thats not true.  Kachina came out, knocked the other box over (which wasn't even as ugly), and ran past it, not even stopping to check what was inside.  Having something that is at the very least colorful, is stimulating.   That said, THE TAPE!!!!   This is a BIG issue!   There is no excuse for this to happen.  NONE!

When we were doing Enrichment Toys, we never even used boxes that came with tape/staples/any adhesives.   The only adhesive we would use was the Paper Mache paste mixture.  SO if they are using "previously used" boxes, someone needs to inspect them for these dangerous items.  WHAT is wrong with whoever is responsible for this?   This inspection needs to be done prior to anyone even starting to decorate an Item that will be used for an Animal.   When we stopped making Enrichments, the first Items the Zoo made and put out were for their Halloween event and they gave the Lions a box that not only had tape, but huge 2 inch STAPLES!!!!  I called this to their attention and there was supposed to be an alert to monitoring this in the future.  This was almost two years ago.

Seriously,   I don't think giving an Animal something with Tape on it falls into their new "Wellness Initiative"

Are they waiting for an Animal to Choke or worse?

Did the recent episode with the female Snow Leopard ingesting a foreign matter and creating an intestinal obstruction, and almost dying not teach them anything?

WHO is running this place?   Are they Lazy, Oblivious or just Brainless?

And whoever is running this place and/or responsible for Enrichment Displays,  you really should plan ahead and at least have something decent to put out on Event Days.  Otherwise, just put the food out for foraging.  These boxes were low rent.  They are fine (without tape/staples)  for an average day, since the Animals rarely get Toys anyway, but for actual events, there should be some nice Toys, that actually look like they reflect the event.  Some Mache Honey Pots/Bee Hives/Bees would have been wonderful.  Use your imagination and solicit Adults, Volunteers and Docents to make things.  If you are going to have Kids paint stuff at least prep the Items by fully painting them and teach Kids to draw simple shapes like Swirls, Hearts, Sun, Peace Signs, ect.  Let's put these crappy Items to rest.

Saturday June 9, 2012 - Visit

It was a great visit until we witnessed a group of Orange T-Shirt wearing volunteers terrorizing a Peacock.  People are just evil and I don't understand why those who don't respect Animals even come to the Zoo, let alone volunteer to help there.  This large group were seen chasing and trying to corner the bird in hopes of catching it!  Yes, they were vocal about trying to catch it, and said, "I wonder if it will fit in my backpack. ... I'll have to cut it up if not." !!!!   OMG!  The later I hope was jokingly, but still Who says this?  Who says this when volunteering at a Zoo?!  Evil people that's who!  Shame on all of you.  If I knew your company name I would call you out!

Well, that deceiving sign (at Cats) about this particular yard being an "Enrichment" yard,  that I blogged about is gone.  Once again after I post about something, a change is made.  This is the third one (at least that I've made public) in a week's time.

It made no sense as you can read in my other post

I guess they have also (at least for the moment) decided to keep the Lions in this yard, as the signage (I also posted about) was changed from Sumatran Tiger to African Lion.

Its all very brain curious as they were rotating yards for Enrichment purposes, but now they seem to now be settling into established yards?  Rotating was enriching, so I guess that is out now?    Hopefully the three Tigers still get to rotate as I think its essential for Shastyuh who seems to get restless.

Love this capture I got of a Guinea Fowl.  They are adorable little things who live in the Patas Monkey exhibit.  Earlier in the year I saw one on the Patas Lawn across from the exhibit.  I reported it and told them where it was headed.  Unfortunately it was never found?  as it was listed as missing in the report.  :(

My Precious Goober was happy to see us!
He gave many smiles and nose wiggles :)

I was once told by a Keeper that I was Enrichment for Goober!  You can see by his smile that this is TRUE!     My visiting Goob, enriches his life.  It makes me cry to be able to bring that to him.  I wish I could still visit him behind the scenes as I have been lucky to do.  I would sit there and give him tons of pats :)  ... Even though this Keeper who I was once friends with but now doesn't talk to me (I can only assume because she doesn't agree with my outspoken opinions and airing of truths), I will always cherish her words, as they are one of the best things anyone has ever said to me.

Pike was having a literal ball in the pool!

Pretty Peccarie Ladies :)
Peony is the shy one,
Poppy has fluffy cheeks,
Petunia is out in front :)

How cute is this little guy?  He is smiling because he is happy to be in the Toad Abode (in the Children's Zoo) and not out in the rest of the Zoo where all the Management mishaps and Visitor misbehavior happens :)

Tuesday May 29, 2012 - Visit

Visited Lily first again.  She was not there?

New Male Kudu trying to get into the area where Lily and Erik hide.
Erik pretended he wasn't home.

According to the sign, they "dive for cover under brush when startled" maybe this the Zoo's idea of Enrichment. Why can't they have their own enclosure?  Their son Houdini lives behind the Giant Elands former home, while the front yard goes unused.  Would be nice if they could move there and not only have a space not much bigger than a bathroom, that they don't have to huddle in all day.  AND they would be mesh to mesh with their son.  But I guess having Duikers on the Savannah is more important, that was obvious when poor Lily was there all alone, hiding for two years.

Houdini visible in back behind the fence.
Curious the front space isn't being used.

Another Zoo Game  LOL!

I missed this one on Saturday.  Just what we need, more kids running wild about the Zoo.  Good grief, what's the plan when one falls and injures themselves and they blame the Zoo?

Lion Shower

I've seen this before and just never posted it, but hey I'm on a roll.  So, Lions don't like water.  They never use the pools, other than to drink from.  Yet they have a shower that often streams continuous, while the Bairds Tapir who has health issues with his mouth,  only has his pool changed three times a week?   The Tapir is an Animal who spends alot of time in Rivers, so instinctively he uses the water for many things, one being a toilet.  His pool should be changed daily, yet I've been told over the years that the Zoo doesn't want to spend the money to give him fresh water daily.  FAIL!

 Dry Elly, looking for Gene

Gauhati comes over to say Hi!  Hi Guac!

Male Mallard having a fun lounge in the sun
and he was talkin' all about it!

Zoo Friends Birthdays!

I love Birthdays!  Everyone has one.  For the Zoo friends, sometimes its their actual day of birth, sometimes its their arrival date and the facility they first came to from either the wild or as a rescue.  As I became endeared to the San Francisco Zoo Animals, I wanted to celebrate them, by celebrating their Birthday!  Again whether the actual day or the estimated day, every Animal has one and if they don't they should (bad record keeping) and that date or any date, at least once a year should become their special day!

The Zoo has no interest in honoring these awesome beings on their Birthday, but I was lucky enough to befriend the Big Cat Keeper who cared enough to share my interest.  Because of her, I was lucky enough to do something special for the Cats and Bears birthdays during 2010.  Now I just go and wear something festive and sing them Happy Birthday :)

Here are some dates that might be of your special Zoo Friend's special day!  ... If not or any other info needed, please contact me, I am always available to provide what I know about the Zoo Animals.

OH almost forgot.  While compiling this list, I had to laugh, as I noticed one of the Zoo's famous blunders.  They have Lulu the Mandrill's date listed in July of 2008, and her mothers passing date as January 2008.  Amazing!

Natural Living Space = Enrichment?

I've had this photo for a couple weeks now, just wasn't sure in what way to post it.  I've been working on a post regarding the Zoo's "Enrichment" efforts, so I'm just going to post this as a stand alone post that will precede the other one.

I noticed this sign less than a week after Padang's passing.  This was the grotto/yard she lived in.  The Big Cats sometimes rotate yards for Enrichment.  It gives them a change of scenery and the enriching opportunity to smell the other Cats.  Padang was a part of this rotation, until it was necessary for her to live in a yard that was modified so she could no longer have access to the moat areas, for safety reasons in connection with aging.

The modification made was adding a fence that ran along the edge of the upper surface.  Aside from that all the yards have basically consisted of the same landscaping for almost twenty years, possibly longer.  There is also one other yard that has bamboo as part of the landscaping.

These grottos prior to adding natural landscaping, mirrored how three of the Bear grottos still look today.  Point is, the landscaping was added to update concrete living spaces, to create  a more natural environment for the animals to live in.

I have two things to say about this sign.

1. It appears that the Zoo now trying to say that an already established living space is now being "exhibited" as an Enrichment?   I've read alot about Enrichment and providing a captive animal with a natural living space is not Enrichment, its humane.

I feel like they have done this to make the public think they are doing more Enrichment than they actually are.

2.  In my crusade to get the Zoo to recognize that Andean Bear Wishbone needed grass (a natural surface to live on), I once wrote in a post that adding grass to his home would "enrich" his life.  So, even though I think touting this yard as Enrichment is malarky, going with the basic premise that YES a natural living space is enriching, why did the Zoo never add such "enrichment" to Wishbones's home?  Instead letting his bones pound to death literally on concrete?  Why has no one of authority ever green lit upgrading those Bear grottos in the past two decades?

UPDATE 4.29.12

So, the Zoo caught my tweet in regard to this post and tweeted back.

from @sfzoo:
@leo811 Regular rotation of exhibit space is "environmental enrichment"; one of the most powerful/natural forms. eg: Denver's Predator Ridge

I replied:
@sfzoo its not the rotation i refered to,its calling that particular yard "enrichment" after all these years as if something different now.

then they further offer:
@leo811 Not sure when the last time the Lions were in that yard, so very different for them, which then makes it different for the Tigers.

@leo811 Thus creating what is referred to as "environmental enrichment." Just one of many different enrichment strategies.

I replied:
@sfzoo You are missing my point, but it doesn't really matter. ... As well I understand what enrichment is, I research it constantly.

I can't bat the issue back and forth with people who don't get what I'm saying.  Regardless of whether they think my opinion is wrong, they just don't get the point of the post.  They can justify what they do, but I maintain the opinion I have in regard to this issue. They must have missed the part that I wrote "The Big Cats sometimes rotate yards for Enrichment." Obviously I know this. The Big Cats have been on yard rotation for years, that's why I noted it.  The point is, the yard is not new, so to "tout" is as such to make it seem this individual yard is an "Enrichment" yard, is worded as such for public perception. If anything, the sign notes bamboo "forest" and the forest is less than it was a few weeks ago when Padang was still living there. The only other change made is to the walk way, an area that allegedly was a problem area and how Padang injured herself prior to her passing.

I appreciate they had a response.  After all the things I've blogged about for over a year, this is the first time they've had anything to say.  Interesting that they choose to be defensive about this.  What about the kid that was laying across the barrier at the Anteater.  I tweeted them a photo about that but they had nothing to say about that or any of the other Security issues I've noted.  It appears something is a brew in the Enrichment "department."

@andiecattt added the comment:
@leo811 exactly right, nothing has changed. It's just a lazy way to not have to be creative and really come up with excitement for the cats

I replied:
@andiecattt the main issue is nothing has changed. rotation/not new - yard/not new. i think a couple keepers try to be creative.

additionally, Penguin Keeper Anthony Brown responded.  I am posting his posts as I not only like to keep the subject fully detailed, but I think what he says on Enrichment is informative to those who aren't familiar with it.  I was going to post a breif Enrichment guideline in the original post, but decided not to because educating about Enrichment really wasn't what the post was about, but, via the twitter exchange, its become that in part.

from @anthonybrown:
@leo811 @andiecattt What you're missing, is each day that the Lions enter an exhibit that smells fresh of Tiger, it's very new for them.

@leo811 @andiecattt Enrichment doesn't have to be "new" to us to be effective - it needs to be "new" to the animals.

@leo811 @andiecattt Studies have shown that animals will interact with objects they've encountered as much as "new" ones after only 2wks.

@leo811 @andiecattt So if an animal loves a boomer ball, reintroducing it every 2 weeks creates "something new" for them.

@leo811 @andiecattt With that said, some individuals love certain toys, and will engage with them everyday - ie: Gauhati and his ball/keg.

I replied:
@anthonybrown @andiecattt anthony, i know & understand all that you've said. I'll also note that i always appreciate your comments.

@anthonybrown @andiecattt my issue is that in this particular situation, it seems written for the sake of appearance, not education.

Sunday March 18, 2012 - Let the Sun Shine!

Part two of yesterdays visit.  All the friends were loving the sunshine :)  My Goober was really having a great time!  Happy to see me he was giving tons of smiles and nose wiggles!  My battery ran out so I didn't get any photos of it, but cherish the interaction :)  LOVE him!  ...  Some of these pix are from another sunny day I didn't get to post.  The Wallabyroo baby was taken three weeks ago, when I first saw it peek out :)

I took almost 200 photos of the barnyarders,
and almost 100 of the grizzly girls,
so I made videos of their photos :)
