HOT TOPIC - What February 24 Means to Me.

This was the easiest post to write.  Alot of it I've said before.  It's a subject that will always touch my soul, and be something I'm proud to have accomplished for my Chimpers.  I was born in 1963.  Cobby came to the Zoo in 1968.  Maggie and Minnie in 1970.  As a Richmond District native and lifelong resident, the Zoo has been a part of my life, my whole life.  These three Chimps have been there as long as I can remember.

I just finished watching the Oscars.  Half way through I thought about four years ago.  Right before the show in 2015, KGO-TV Reporter Dan Noyes, messaged me.  The teaser for our news story on the Chimps would premiere after the Oscars. ... I fell asleep and woke up in the morning to a familiar voice coming from the TV.  Mine. ... That teaser ran more than every hour for the next two days, when the story aired, February 24.

The story of how the San Francisco Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, wanted to kick-out our precious Senior Chimp Family literally was, in, my opinion, one of the worst SFZoo crimes, and a level of cruelty I found hard to believe could happen.

Thank you to everyone who helped me be their Voice, whether you signed my Petition, contacted the Zoo, or were part of the News team who got their story to the masses, we are the ones who are responsible for the enriching life the Chimps now have.  For them staying in the only home they have ever known.  For them never having to see the inside of those shipping crates that were being built for them.

On Thanksgiving Day, almost four years later, the new Dayroom opened. I easily spend several hours a week with our Chimpanzees.  Experiencing their new life adventures with them, is a joy.  Seeing the looks on their faces, their body language, the way their new world is enriching their lives, will never get old.

 Minnie!

 Cobby!

Maggie!

 Qadeer!

People are not just loving this Exhibit, they are loving this Exhibit FOR Our Chimps.  The people who have visited Cobby, Minnie, Maggie, and Tallulah (RIP), over the years in Triple Grotto and have wanted more for them, are touched.  I was standing next to a Member the other day who had been visiting the Chimps for over twenty-five years.  She was touched seeing them get something new after so long.

I hear the words of Visitors,  as they stream into the new Dayroom, and stare with smiles into at our Chimp Friends, "Beautiful" ,"Amazing", "Wonderful", "Awesome", "Incredible", "Neat", ...

So, four years ago, San Francisco Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, wanted to get rid of the Zoo's longest and oldest Residents.  She had no idea how much they were Loved.  Or maybe she did and didn't care. They ARE Loved.  Seeing them in the Dayroom has become the Zoo's most popular exhibit.  ... You're Welcome.

Survey and Quotes - What Other's Would Like To See Done At The SFZoo

In my previous post, I wrote about what I would want to see done at the Zoo.   The catalyst for posting those thoughts was hearing about yet another project that once again in my opinion did not support my feelings that the Zoo should Take Care At Home, meaning, do what's best for the Animals that already live there. I decided to take a poll.  Without going into detail about the new project, I asked people in my circle what they would want to see done at the Zoo.  Below are quotes from those I asked.  Some who work at the Zoo, some who used to.  Some who visit randomly, some who are Members.  Its been six months, so if anyone has additional thoughts to add, please contact me or add them via the survey.

I am interested in hearing how others would answer, so please take (and share) my short Survey.  Five questions total, three are optional.  The Survey is completely Anonymous!  So, if you work at the Zoo and want to express yourself, you can do so confidently.  If you want your voice to be heard, I'd like to post your answers in an update of this post.  If you prefer not to have them public, write Private in the comment box for that question.

What Projects Would You Like To See At The San Francisco Zoo?

"Building/Upgrading exhibits for Senior Residents. Constructing for Animals in behind the scenes holdings, so public can see them and they can get added Enrichment by people watching."

"Improve Bear and Cat Habitats, (and Chimps pending size of new areas).  They need more space and more naturalistic.  Combine some areas, or build new in undeveloped areas of the Zoo."

"Conservation projects.  I'd like to see SFZoo as a Global Awareness Advocate like San Diego, and the Bronx Zoo.  I'm ashamed our big City Zoo isn't a prominent figure in Conservation, like SDZ and BZ.  ... Exhibit Updates."

"My big number one is signage: a single uniform style. includes: clear directional signs, eg, the way out of the parking lot. intelligent animal descriptions including age of species. taxonomy charts my group, eg, primates, carnivores. make the Zoo's organization by group transparent. AND a sign telling people where to exit from parkinglot!!! ... more art. more history, eg vintage engravings by species classifiers. ... non-reflective glass. ... plastic casts of skulls, as at grizzly bears. ... flight space for all birds, eg rebuild the short string & give the kookaburras a sunny home. ... swing space for siamangs. ... redesign Insect House as per Patrick's needs. ... BATS!!! ... reclaim that body of water from the duck-weed. ... restore the Wetlands — this will never happen, merely a fantasy!"

"Education.  More specific Education about SFZoo Animals.  Stronger Education about Wild Animals in Crisis."

"Upgrade All, including Mothers Building"

"All for the Animals."

"After Update all, bring in Big Animals."

"Upgrades for all.  Build area to Rescue Lab Chimps. 200 are sitting in holding with no place to go."

"New Gorilla Habitat with and pool and more Enrichment.  Swinging and Climbing Equipment and space. ... Waste of money on new exhibit. They should turn down the money."

"Upgrade all. . Tram"

"Take care of old exhibits and Animals first.  More Enrichment for the Animals."

"Upgrades to the Animals Exhibits , that Benefit the Animals!"

Thank you to everyone who gave me answers.

What I'd Like To See Done At The San Francisco Zoo

For almost a decade now I have had ideas about what I'd like to see at the Zoo.  As I became more aware and endeared to the Animals as individuals, those thoughts grew and became endless.  I have kept notes on each thought, most that involve the Animals and really need no notes as they loop through my mind constantly.

The catalyst for this post is an upcoming project, that in my opinion should not be happening at this time, as there are in-need projects that are ignored.  My list here will mostly highlight projects I feel are in-need, with some other ideas.  It's not my complete list, although I may ramble on, and it may seem like it is!

There's been several projects over the past five or so years that have taken priority over those in-need.  Each time one came about, my thoughts went to three Animals.   The Chimps, who waited over thirty years to get any updates to their home.  They waited to the point where they were in jeopardy of being kicked out by the Zoo Director Tanya Peterson.  I Roared as loud as possible for them and with KGO-TV's help, created public outrage, and thankfully these Friends never knew what was happening.  Not only a callous decision, they could have lost their lives in a move like that.  Wishbone the Andean Bear, did lose his life to being forced to live exclusively on concrete.  I Roared for him, but never reached the right people.  The Zoo knew, the Rec and Park knew, the Donors knew,  no one cared to do the right thing for him.   Falcor the Komodo Dragon, who was stuck living in a terrarium for years.  Again everyone knew and no one cared. The Zoo will say timing coincided with health issues.  I call BS on that.  He was supposed to get a new home within a year/half of arrival.  His health issues didn't start til after that time frame.  If he had a proper home, his post-op rehabilitation would have been optimum and he'd probably be more advanced in his recovery than he is.  These three cases have broken my heart many times over.  Animals in-need and yet those able to help with funding ignored them.

Wishy passed away in 2010.  Since then, so many projects came before the Chimps and Falcor.  The Playground, Sculpture Garden, Tiki Hut, Tropical Aviary Renovation, Red Pandas, Wolverines, Wolves, Sifaka, New Flamingo Fencing, Fragrance Garden.  Some of these projects had money locked, which means donations specifically for these projects.  Four included building for new Animals, while those already living at the Zoo were in-need.

So, What would I do at the Zoo?  A whole lot that's not being done.  These are the projects that I think are in-need and should be a priority over anything else, except for Animals in-need of rescuing, like our Black Bear Cubs or our Sea Lions and Grizzly Girls before them.

Number one priority for me is Zoo-wide upgrade to barriers.  Specifically at Black Bears, Grizzly, Hippo, and Black Rhino.  If they don't want to put up glass everywhere, at the very least there needs to be a deterrent much like at the male Anteater exhibit.  A jagged barrier that would prevent people from sitting on/over, or standing on barrier railings.  Signs not to do so at every barrier, code-red or not.  Signs at the Entrance. The signs about not crossing barriers are useless.  Keeping the Animals safe, and the Human offenders by proxy should be priority.

I'd like to see Aviaries built for the Birds that live in cages across from the Chimps and the one behind the old Komodo area.  The open field between the Wrinkled Hornbill Aviary and the Food Depot is an obvious location.  Even using that Depot area which is unnecessary for food and then for entertainment during their Zootoberfest.  In my opinion all Events should take place at the Playfield area.  That Depot area, which many years ago was the site of Monkey Island, should be used for Animals.  There is also a huge unused area behind it.  Once those cages are empty, an Aviary could be built there.

I'd like to see the area for the Sloth expanded.  There is no reason the area in the Tropical Building that houses the Sloth is so small and houses four Animals.  The seating to the side should be done away with and the area expanded. As well, an appropriate area for the second Sloth that has been moved from the Tropical Building to the Lion House and to a reduced space.  That terrarium is not a habitat.

I'd like to see the closed areas opened.  There are too many areas closed and have been for too long.  Not only do people not like it, there are Animals that could use the space, and Animals living there that should be viewable.

First, behind that south east fencing that starts at Hippo and goes toward Grizzlies is an area called South Gate.  This area used to house several species of hoofstock.  It was closed many years ago, as I understand originally because they didn't want to spend time keeping it up.  That proved to be true as I saw the condition it was in last fall, and was almost shocked. I was also shocked and disgusted to see two of the Peccaries living back there, among the ruins of downed fencing, overgrowth, and just plain devastation of once what was a lovely area.  I thought I wrote a post about it with photos, but it didn't come up in a search.  Will link here later if I find it.

So, I'd like to see South Gate re-opened.  They could move the Bongo there.  They could create the extra Peccary habitat that is needed.  They could move the Guanacos from the Puente there.  The Guanacos are on rotation.  The male is living alone, and is rotated a few days a week out of a small holding area to the Puente yard.  He is rotated with the female and their daughter.  These Animals need their own appropriate sized space.  Creating one side by side in South Gate would give them visible access if they wanted.  There is also space for future hoofstock or part of my Rhino idea below.

Next, and even more so now with some Monkey species living there after losing their homes to the new project, the Feline Conservation Center needs to reopen.  An area closed in 2008, in the wake of the Tiger Escape, but allegedly closed for not being handicap accessible.   For those who don't know, the FCC opened in the 80s.  A very cool and secluded area for Medium and Small Cats.  I always liked visiting this area, seeing Sabrina the Black Leopard, who I had visited for so many years, even when she sadly still lived in a cage before FCC opened.  The FCC had maybe half dozen aviary style enclosures. Too small really to be habitats for Leopards, the Snows lived there too, but decent for the Ocelots, and the Fishing Cats.  I remember watching the Fishing Cat kittens out in the open with a Keeper learning to fish.

There was a time in 2010 when all Cats were either moved down to the Main Zoo or shipped out (Ocelots).  It became an active home when Senior male Snow Leopard Rigel moved there to "retire" as the Zoo was bringing in a male that was born there to be the new breeding companion of Niya.  He passed away, and Niya was then retired to FCC, while the Zoo brought in our current pair.  The FCC now is home to more Animals than it has room for.  In addition to Niya, Raj the father of our Snow Cubs also lives there.  I'm actually happy that Niya now has company, so that didn't work out too bad.  When the Zoo decided it just had to have a male Andean Condor after allegedly refusing to send the female back to her original home Zoo, they both have now been living there for a couple years.  The Zoo had no space for two Condors on exhibit.  Thankfully, the Fossa have now also moved to FCC.  None of these Animals co-habitate, so that is already six aviaries in use.  With the displacement of Monkeys from the Primate Center (read future post about Madagascar project)  allegedly some aviaries were split in two, to accommodate the Howler and soon Colobus Monkeys.

My point about reopening FCC is that there are so many Animals there now, they should be able to be viewed.  Especially the Monkeys that will not be on exhibit during the future construction.  This should have happened long ago and now, it definitely should have been part of the deal prior to the new project breaking ground.  In my opinion that deal should have called for construction of new Monkey enclosures in exchange for displacing from current ones.

Other things I'd like to see as a secondary priority, exhibit upgrades and additional space for Animals who could use it.

The Animals at the Farm could use some additional rotating spaces.  There had been talk of re-purposing the old Duck pond but nothing has happened.  There are a couple other surrounding areas that could be used as well.  The Cow spends half his day isolated in a back coral.  The San Clemente Goats are contained in one area all day.  The Farm needs at least two additional areas.

Improvements to any Enclosure that is in-need. Some things simple, like adding landscaping to the Gorillas so at least half of their contact window is level with Humans.  They shouldn't be directly looked down on.  Some full on renovations, like new floor to ceiling glass barriers at Cat grotto, allowing for moats to be filled in and topical areas extended by ten plus feet.

I would like to see both Rhinos in better habitats.   I've always hated the Black Rhino enclosure front and back configuration.  Poor Elly the female (passed now) was banished to the back for years.  This exhibit should have had side by side areas so both Animals had equal living situations. Expanding Black Rhino into Bongo area would allow for the back part of Black Rhino to be used for Hippo.  Hippo pool should be glassed in, taking away all the heavy wiring that he constantly gnaws on and eliminating the issue of people hanging over the barrier.

I would like to see the Asian Rhino have an expansion or new enclosure and a companion.  At the San Francisco Zoo.  It is possible.  There is space.  Expand into the adjacent empty exhibit or build a new one in the old Black Rhino enclosure and the area adjacent to that. That would provide so much room. This exhibit sits along the path going west of the Grizzly Bears, behind the fenced off area across from the lake.  That area is huge, and could accommodate not only an area big enough for two Asian Rhinos, but for a mirror enclosure to the Grizzly Gulch, which could house the Black Bears in the future, allowing the Black Bears and the Grizzlies to rotate.  The Grizzlies have running water in the Gulch so there should be no reason an awesome new pool for Asian Rhino could not be built.  I want to note that Gauhati the Asian Rhino loves his pool, and the waterfall has not been working allegedly for near a year.  Much like the six months that the Lion House had no heat, this is wrong. While not as necessary as heat obviously, its still something that should have been fixed promptly.

Anyway, those are just a short list of things I can think of that should be done for the Animals currently living at the Zoo, before bringing in any news ones and building homes for them, unless they are in-need rescues.

All the Animals living at the Zoo deserve appropriate habitats.  The Zoo needs to provide that, without entertaining ideas of shipping them out, like they tried to do with the Chimps and have now done with three species living in the Primate Center.  Take Care At Home!

Something non-Animal related, there is an effort by a Historian to repair the Mother's Building.  When this is done, it would be a wonderful place for a History Center.

This post is one in a series of three.  See next two posts for subject matter in full.  Thank you.

Squirrel Monkeys That Haven't Been Outside in Two Years! ... Updated 10.23.18 - Info Error

For those who read my last post, Ducks Continue to Fly into Windows Without Decals and Zoo Knows It! and may have been waiting for the second Zoo issue from that week, I apologize for not getting to it right away as planned.  Had bad sinus pressure for over a week and just didn't feel like dealing with upsetting stuff.  ... I will give a bit of an update here.  As of last week, there are still no Life Saving Decals up at Flamingos.  But, hey, I did notice some fall decals on the windows inside the Lion House, you know where lots of Birds are flying into windows.  Shameful.

As noted, the week starting 9.17.18 brought two Animal Care issues to my attention.  One being the care and concern for the wild Beings (Ducks) that live at the Zoo and this one regarding Beings in the Zoo's collection and care.

So, deep breath, here goes.  ... That week, while visiting the Sifaka, a friend (and Zoo Member) and I were watching the male Max jump to and grab onto the mesh of an upper window.  My friend noticed movement inside, which is part of the night quarter building, in a space that is above what is used for the Sifaka.   This building is part of the Primate Discovery Center, which is two stories tall.  I had never noticed or have known this to be an area that housed Animals.

I quickly snapped this photo and then turned on the video to be able to zoom in clearer to identify what was in there.

We could see that there were small Primates scurrying about, but couldn't identify.  My first  thought was they were newly acquired Lemurs for the Madagascar project, as I wouldn't put it past the Zoo to bring in Animals there was no appropriate place for.  I later asked and was shocked to find out they were four of the Squirrel Monkeys, from the current collection.  Even more shocked and sickened to hear that they have been in there allegedly for at least two years!

There is so much wrong with this, but let's just start with the fact that these Beings have been living in a concrete room with no natural landscaping and most important, they have not been outdoors for years!  Sadly they can see the Sifaka enjoying a spacious OUTDOOR area.  Shameful.

So, the obvious question is Why have these Beings been subjected to this kind of containment?  The other obvious question is, Who made this decision?  Who thinks this is ok?  I would bet no one on the Animal Care Staff think this is a good thing.  So that leaves Management level staff.  I'm going to bypass finger pointing at the Primate Curators and go straight to the question, Why does the San Francisco Zoo have a Wellness Department?  Is it not the purpose of this department to make sure that every Being in the collection is housed in an appropriate habitat,  appropriate to their well-being?

In my opinion, there are three people on full-time payroll that should be making sure that among so many other things, this and other inappropriate housing are never more than temporary.  Those people are Jason Waters VP of Wellness and Animal Behavior, Animal Curator David Bocian, and (*Please see my update at end of post. I had an additional name here that was in error.) Additionally, the buck usually stops with Director Tanya Peterson.  So who's fault is it that these Animals and others get stuck in inappropriate housing?  One would have to assume either someone isn't doing their job, which in my opinion is to be on the Animals side, or they just don't care, or they afraid to put forth a plea for the Animals that might get challenged and threaten their job security?  Regardless, this is not right.

Let's not forget the recent living situation of the Fossa. They have been moved to the Feline Conservation Center (FCC), but had lived in inappropriate housing for over two years as well.   You can view where their home was for over a year.  The other near year they spent living in quarantine.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh5OaWnXoaQ&feature=youtu.be

At this point, noting that the FCC is an option for housing over-flow Residents, is moot.  The FCC is over crowded now with many different species, with those displaced by the Madagascar project on the way.  But, at the time, two years ago, it wasn't and both these Squirrel Monkeys and the Fossa could have been housed there immediately without ever being subjected to the containment areas there were.

Let's take a look at the history of the Squirrel Monkeys.  This group came to the Zoo from Stanford in 2010 as a retirement home.  These Beings were former research test subjects.  These Beings should never have been locked inside again.  This was supposed to be their retirement from that environment.

Over the years, the group has dwindled, sadly many passing from age related issues.  Every now and then, it seems there are less on view, and I've asked about them.  I've been told some are off exhibit.  My bad, not to ask where.  I never would have thought that meant an area where they had no access to the outdoors.

Going back again to when the Squirrel Monkeys first arrived.  I remember their place in the Primate Center was supposed to be temporary, with a designated donation to build a new home for them elsewhere in the Zoo.  So many years ago but I my memory is right.  You can read the June 2010 news article from about this here:  http://www.sfexaminer.com/zoo-saves-monkeys-from-euthanasia/

I want to notate a couple quotes from that article:

"When MacDonald (former Primate Curator) feels they are ready to revel in trees and dirt, the monkeys will temporarily live in the Primate Discovery Center."

"In the meantime, the zoo will use a $250,000 donation specifically for the monkeys to extend an outdoor exhibit at the new South American Tropical Rain Forest Aviary that’s still under construction."

Additionally, in November 2010, I attended a Reception for Guardian Members.  Director Peterson displayed an artist rendering of the proposed new Squirrel Monkey exhibit.  This photo depiction became the future project and was made into a banner and put out at the project site adjacent to the Tropical Building.

I was horrified on the spot to see the drawing for the new Squirrel Monkey exhibit shows, not only another play area for humans, but white tree structures?!  Where in nature are there white trees? I think even the Director felt the need to sell this odd habitat, as she repeatedly said,  "Think modern. Think modern." Why should we think modern? This isn't a museum, this is an Animal Park and Animals don't live surrounded by white plastic looking tree's.

Construction never happened for this.  The sign was taken down.  The area went through a couple stages, at one point housing the Dinosaur sculptures, and more recently the ridiculous Ropes course, something that was never used in that area after time and money spent to develop the area.  Not to mention money spent when the Zoo purchased this crap.  Seriously, we have a three million dollar playground, the Zoo should not be spending money on this, especially when for one thing there is allegedly a shortage of funds for Animal Enrichment.

So, with the money locked specifically for a new Squirrel Monkey home, and the proposed location touting the future home designated, I ask, What happened to that project, and even more curious, Where is that money?

Update 10.23.18 ... I had originally included Ashleigh Lutz-Nelson as I was told by a couple staff members that she had been given a new title and was the Asst (General Curator). That information was wrong, she still holds the title Asst Carnivore Curator.  Squirrel Monkeys fall under Primates and Ashleigh has no connection to what goes on in that Dept. Additionally as I stated in original post body I do not put responsibility for these types of issues on Animal Staff including Department level Curators.  I do believe that Upper level Management - Animal Care Staff  like Bocian and Waters who I noted are responsible for championing these issue points to the Zoo Director on their behalf.

I don't like that I got misinformation.  Contrary to what people think I do try to confirm information and have never been told anything I have posted is in error.  Of course there have been differences of opinion or as I have been told misinterpretation of situations. Actually this has only happened once.  The Carnivore Dept stands by the act of letting people handle and visit behind the scenes with the Snow Leopard Cubs. I stand by my opinion stated in a couple posts that I think this is wrong.

I will also again note that if anyone has an issue with the subject, information, or my interpretation in any post there is a comment portion to this blog.  I moderate the comments so it can also be used to contact me.

Hoot! So Lucky, I Saw The Chimps In The SkyTrail!

Great news!  Yesterday while I was visiting the Chimps, they got access to the SkyTrail!  They seemed to really like it, I think they will be even more happy with it when it leads to an open end and into the Playroom.  It was great to see them exploring something new.  So happy and lucky to catch this!  I just missed capturing a photo of all three standing side by side looking out, but here's a few solo.

I have heard in addition to the access I previously wrote about, that they have gone out before the has Zoo opened.  I don't know if its been everyday since, but aside from Cobby who was very excited and active, Minnie and Maggie seem relatively unfazed.  Minnie went up and smiled and hooted a bit with Cobs, but after some initial investigation and smiles, Mags went back inside.  I did hear that all three were very excited and animated, the very first time, which of course was expected.  As I wrote before, the Zoo really did a disservice to those who love the Chimps by not documenting it and posting, so everyone could enjoy the joy they were experiencing for the first time.  That was a moment that won't be repeated.  Hopefully the Zoo will take note and document their first access to the new Playroom and new Yard when those times come.

That all said, I heard there is actually a video, taken by a Docent.  This Docent posted it to her Facebook and someone I know saw it.  Lucky I got a play by play of the fun!  I later heard from someone else that the Zoo didn't like that it was posted.?  Not sure what the problem is, it was taken during a time the Zoo was open.  Friday was Member's Morning, the Zoo opened from 9-10a for Member's.  Any Member could have done the same thing.  Instead of being mad about it, the Zoo should be thankful someone documented their first time and share the video for all to see.

Anyway, here's the link to my video, for all to see.

2014 Holidays at the Zoo

Zoo Friends in Rain on Xmas Eve

I visited the Zoo Friends on Christmas Eve Day.  During my visit it began to rain.  Since we have been having usually cold weather, I was more pissed than usual to see so many of the Animals forced out on exhibit.

The Zoo for years has had a sign at the entrance that notes that all Animals have access to the inside.  That has always been a flat out lie.  Many Animals are locked out on exhibit all day.  I investigated this several years ago, when my Precious Tapir Friend Goober, with terminal Health issues was allegedly by Management orders forced to be on exhibit.  I was outraged about this, and one day it came to a head when it was raining and there he stood in the rain staring at his bedroom door.

As I went around the Zoo in the rain, giving Holiday Greetings to the Friends, I was really upset to see so many out.

44 year old Elly, staring at her door

Tucker, sleeping as usual under water, no choice but to

 Lions seek shelter

Indian Rhino Gauhati's door is always closed

Zoo Lights Lite

Busy and/or Sick the last few weeks, I finally got to Zoo Lights tonight, the last night.  Two words, Big Fail.  I hate to pick at things especially at this time in my Zoo passion issues, which are concentrated on the Chimps, Animal safety and proper living environments, but after seeing the Komodo Dragon still in a barren home (see previous post),  I'm once again bothered at the Zoo just seeming to not really give a shit.  Its either that, collaborative inemptness and cross the board laziness.  Either way you look at it, too much is left to Mediocrity.

The Zoo has done this Event for three years now.  The first year they had some technical difficulties, but the attempt was decent and the part I saw was impressive and we had a great time.  Read my review here:

Last year I had high hopes, as so many Zoo's were putting on really great displays and our Zoo seemed like it was trying.  I thought it fell short in light display, seeing as it is a "light" Event.   I thought the craft vendors and food truck were a great add.

This year, Friends who had gone early in the Event said they were really disappointed.  After seeing some of the displays up prior, I had a feeling the effort to do a good Event wasn't going to be there.  Sadly I was right.

I feel bad to hate on these little trees that could, but seriously, these poor little tree's deserved to be pretty.  Where did they get these decorations and who decorated them?   Even the Gulls were outraged, as I got a photo (I can't find) of them screaming at one.

And, I think the Zoo has lost sight of the fact that this is a Light Event, which means, don't go lite on the amount of lights.  Does anyone look at other Zoo (Point Defianace) Displays?   Are they aware that there is a whole TV Show (Great Christmas Light Fight) based on this?    The Show now in its second season has had two Marin based contestants.  The Zoo needs to get their number and get some help if they plan to do this again.  If you are not going to Wow people, dim the lights and get out of the game.

Here are some photos.  Again the Snowflakes on the ground were the best part.  Thankfully I took the photo of the three lit Animals at the Entry going in, because they were out an hour later when I left.   I was told they "shorted out".   Each year there has been electrical issues and parts of the Event blacked out.   If the Zoo can't handle keeping lights on, then don't have an Event that is about lights.

So yeah, not enough lights, and hardly any food.  The food options were pathetic, especially for an Event that takes place during the Dinner hours.   No Food Truck, only the Lemur Cafe had food and not even full Menu they usually have. I'm pretty sure there were less than ten menu items.   We left after an hour to spend money elsewhere on food.

One right thing they did was have Keeper Nancy out at Koalas sharing her knowledge and photos.   As well she was after doing the same at Giraffes, but we had to leave to seek food.  AND of course the Reindeer.  I love seeing them.

In hindsight, I'm not even sure Snow Flurry machine was on that night.  I think I would have noticed.  So, possibly no Snow, no real food options.  If you can't put on full experience as advertised, dont do it.  People are paying to get in as well some paying more than entrance fee to park.

If I was in charge of this Event and only had the amount of lights in use, I would concentrate them into a smaller area.  Having parts of the Zoo open when not many Animals to see ( I knew this and was not expecting more) is a waste of light space, especially when nothing else is going on in those areas.   Condense efforts, by reducing and changing the areas open during the event.  This would make the "light" portion of the event appear to be more.

I think the Event would be better off if it were only open at Entry Village, Playfield, a portion of the Childrens Zoo.  I think the Craft Vendors and Food Trucks (plural) should be a part of it always.   As well that awesome video display from the first year.  What happened to that?   There is much unused space beyond the tent, in front of the Mothers Building.  Even if they can't figure out what they are doing with the MB, they can at least do something with the area instead of closing it off.  I think it should be a Zoo History House with Memorbilia, but I hear that the Zoo threw out alot of the historical photos and video.  Allegedly no one found value it in.  More disgrace.  But I digress.  Keep the lights concentrated to Entry Village and the path to the Playfield.  Vendors and Food by Mothers Building.  I mentioned the CZ.  I think they should open the right side path, open the ARC (which is rarely open now) and allow people to have a chance to see those rarely seen Animals and have a portion of the Farm viewable.  I say viewable because I don't think crowds of people should be in the Farm after hours, but I do think they should take advantage of putting together a Manger scene in the first corral and having some of our wonderful Farm Friends involved.  They also need to build on the festive as there was none.  I don't remember hearing any Christmas music and I'm not even a fan of it.  But, at an Event, I think its a must.  Hire Carollers, something.  Hand out Candy Canes.  Something.  The two costumed Characters were the only interactive festive elements to the Event.

My Friend pointed out that there wasn't even one Security Guard visable.  In fact the place was void of any Zoo Staff.  Why is there never one Zoo Official at any Event other than ZooFest or another cocktail party type event?  Not that I think its a good idea for our Director to be out at Events, but at least it would show a sense of care if she were, as well other higher up Staffers.  She didn't even make an appearace at the Flamingo Day Event (which I stil haven't reviewed) and those Flamingo Chicks shoudl have gotten major recognition since they were the first in four years.  She just doesn't seem to care about anything.  And what about Bob Cooney, head of Visitor Experience?  What's he doing that he can't be out at Events greeting Visitors.  The Zoo often just throws Events together and no one from the "team" is there to be interactive with guests.

That all said,  I'm also bothered by things in the past that weren't done again this Holiday Season.

Animals Get No Presents

A Christmas time Event that stopped when the Zoo opted instead for Zoo Lights, was an Event of Gift Giving from one species of Animal to another.  Like the Otters would give to the Lions.  So then the Lions would get Christmas decorated boxes.  Toy Enrichment "presents" filled with treats.  Again everyone knows I'm a big fan of Enrichment, and especially love seeing the Animals get Holiday/Birthday themed toy items.  With the elimination of this, the Zoo is down to only giving the Animals this type of fun during the Halloween Event and even thats gone iffy, OR if a randon Animal rates a Birthday treat.

Speaking of Birthday treats.  (chk which year 2012 or 2013)  For several years the Polars got Snow, donated by the San Francisco Ice Company.  Understandable if there was no donation, and I have no idea how that comes about.  Just saying that I miss it and the Polars loved it.  Reason I'm bring it up is more because of the Birthday Fail.  The Zoo (outside the Family Farm) rarely, recognizes the Animals on their Birthdays, whether it be a Facebook shout out or a special treat (both should be mandatory).  I can't say never, because there is that rare occasion for whatever reason (usually media attention) one Animal will rate something.   One of those occasions was when they turned the last Snow donation, into an "Event" to pimp out the Polars Birthdays for Media attention and to attract Visitors.  A sign was posted at their homes for a couple weeks wishing them "Happy Birthday".  I hate that the Animals are used in that way, but if it gets them special treats, whatever.  I will say it was the last time they got special attention for their Birthdays and the only other time before that was when my Friend Lee and I made them and the other Bears Birthday Enrichment Toys in 2011.  This year, both Pike whose Birthday was November 25th and Ulu whose Birthday was December 19th got no mention and no special treats.   In fact while I was there on Pike's Birthday, I was bothered to watch Ulu get thrown treats (but happy she did) while Pike got none and it was her Birthday.   Neither got a mention on the Zoo's Facebook Page.

Our Polars are two of my fav Zoo Friends.  I love these Girls!  Happy Birthday to Pike who turned 32 and to Ulu who turned 34!  Both Bears have reached milestone ages, with Ulu being the oldest female in captivity in a North American Zoo.   The Zoo should not only be celebrating the Animals on their special days, but especially our wonderful Seniors who have given so many years of joy to people.   Elly the Black Rhino will turn 44 January 1st!  Sadly she will most likely not get any mention or special treats.

The Future of this Blog and the SFZoo

I have been haunted by the passing of my Precious Friend Wakoda (male Navajo Churro Sheep).  I still can not bring myself to write a memorial post, but when I do, I'm feeling like that may be it for a long while, if not ever.

The Zoo exhausts me, and it seems like there will forever be issues, because not many within the walls want to rise above mediocrity or for that matter put the Animals first.  Management will continue to make decisions without the Animals best interest a priority.  The Director will continue to make uneducated, hurtful and disrespectful statements,  Untruths will continue to be put forth to not only their own Staff, but to the public in order to serve the needs of the Zoo in any way they see fit.  Staff will continue to run the place like its a school yard, letting personal issues rise above professional.  The Visitors will continue to run wild and do whatever they want including breaching barriers, because the Zoo doesn't want to do whatever they can to ensure the safety of the Animals.  Its a mess and not many seem to care, certainly not those with the authority to do anything.  The Management Staff are the worst offenders and the Zoological Society Members don't care much past their menial duties and writing checks.  Its sad and disgusting.

There is Staff that I know agree with me, then there is Staff that doesn't.  To them I can only say, how can you sleep at night?  Many think I look for issues, or even make stuff up.  If anyone actually reads what I write its clear that I write about what I myself witness.   I pick-up on things that are valid flaws/fails, obvious, curious and questionable.  I rarely post any hearsay  because that is not who I am.  I'm honest and have no need to lie or make anything up.  I post about what moves me.  I have passion and I'm not afraid to say what I think.  If you don't like me for that, that's not my problem.  I care about Animals before Humans and that is what drives me.   It actually surprises me that that some Keeper's choose to support cover-ups and gag orders rather than use the anonymous whistle-blower phone number option that is provided to Staff.  It disgusts me that's its not used more, for the good of the Animals.

For all this, I'm feeling like I want to just finish the posts I've had in the works.  My need to post is not only to make things public and have the things I feel strongly about documented, but writing about them is a way to vent.  I have a small group of friends who feel the same way as I do.  I have blog followers who may be like minded but remain silent.  And then there's the thirty thousand plus that follow the Zoo on their Facebook page, who have no clue other than the fluff the Zoo sells via their own press, both in house and thru the Media.

I start these posts on this day, Cinco De Mayo.  A "day" many view as a celebration.  The Chimp Sanctuary Northwest's  Facebook post today reminded me of how the Zoo misses the opportunity to do fun things for the Animals.  Before I say anything more on that, I want to link the Sanctuary Cinco De Mayo festivities you might find fun to see :)  ... These Chimps love a good party and get one almost daily.  I have been lucky to have provided Enrichment Toys for one of their celebrations!

http://www.chimpsanctuarynw.org/blog/2013/05/cincodemayo/

Anyway, its safe to say that the Zoo did nothing for the Animals on this festive Day (or they would have patted themselves on the back and posted about it), as they don't do anything for Birthdays or even International Awareness Days for specific animals.    Currently their Facebook page boasts about all the Mother Animals (for upcoming Mother's Day), one being 42 year old (can't believe they got her age right) Elly the Black Rhino.   This is an Animal who gave the Zoo fourteen babies, which at a fifteen month gestation equals  over seventeen years of her life she was pregnant.  Whoever let this happen committed a crime in my book, but what's done is done, you think they give her a Birthday celebration for that alone?  Regardless of the fact that she is one of, if not the oldest Rhino in a North American Zoo.  That would be a big fat NO to any celebration. ...  Make sure to check  back for a blog post in the next few days for more on the disrespect of Elly.

So, if you have read even a handful of my posts you will see a certain never-ending trend of topics.  I'm Sad, I'm Tired and even though I know some of what I've posted here has accomplished some good, there is the situation of the Zoo actually paying people to do the right thing and they don't.  I'm not sure I have it in me to keep policing all the crimes they commit against the Animals who live there.  So, I'm just not sure how the future of this blog will play out once I'm finished with those in the works and my Sweet Wakoda's memorial.

Happy Birthday Maggie and Minnie! - Chimp Girls Birthday!

Yesterday Maggie and Minnie added another year to their lives!

Happy Birthday Maggie!

Happy Birthday Minnie!

The Zoo has their Birthdays listed as April 24, 1963, but the Chimpanzee Studbook has it listed as April 25, 1970.  Either way, since they were wild born, the right info date would be an estimate, as well give or take two years.  I go by the Studbook which would make them between 41 and 45.   According to the Zoo info, this would have been their 50th Birthday.  Even that milestone didn't get them a Birthday Party :(  Another Big Fail on the Part of the San Francisco Zoo.

I have posted before about the disrespect I think not celebrating the Zoo Friends Birthdays is.  Additionally for these Chimps, not only do they love a party, they need extra and varied Enrichment.  Their boredom hurts me the most because of how smart they are.   They have lived at the Zoo at least 40 years.  Tallulah who recently passed, was (I believe) the oldest Chimp in a North American Zoo.  As well Cobby ranks up there in stats.  Still they get no celebration.   I'm sure the Staff celebrates their Birthdays.  Tsk Tsk.

Hallelujah! The Chimps Got Easter Enrichment Toys!

Unbelievable!  Yet so exciting!  I nearly shed tears of joy seeing the photo of Minnie holding her Mache Egg!   Photo was posted to the Zoo's Facebook page, follow the link below to check it out.

Whoever made this happen, the Chimps thank you!

Now, can we get the Girls a Birthday celebration?!

UPDATE 4.3.13  .... Three days later and there has been no answer to my question of which other Animals got Easter Enrichment.  No additional photos posted either.  Did the Easter Bunny visit other Animals?

Boo (Hoo) at the San Francisco Zoo - Halloween Event

The Zoo's Halloween Event, Boo at the Zoo is an event that has been a favorite of mine for many years.   My love for Animals and Pumpkins fused together!   Over the years, seeing the Animals not only have fun with Pumpkins, but with other fun Halloween themed Enrichment, was a fun time both for me and especially for the Animals.

In the past the Animals would get both un-carved Pumpkins to play with and carved Pumpkins with food treats in them.  The "fun" part of the events has dwindled through the years, down to this past year.   I went to the Event yesterday and in my opinion the "fun" was none (for the Animals) except the Chimps.   I will say that I didn't see all the Animals who were scheduled to receive treats, but I saw four of the big attraction Animals and two were a complete letdown.  The Animals may not know, but I know for them.

I went to Chimps first and their area was decorated and had carved Pumpkins with treats in them.  Keepers Amy and Dana did a great job!   Special mention to Cobby who quite enjoyed tossing a Pumpkin lid outside the enclosure!  He didn't seem upset and sat there peacefully after seemingly pleased with his fun :)  ... Next I saw Asian Rhino Gauhati.   When Gauhati saw his Pumpkin he ran!   Only to get there and be disappointed by it being, just a Pumpkin.  Sure a Pumpkin is something different and he could and probably would play with it (eventually), BUT I have seen his Halloween Enrichment before and he has had a few Pumpkins and some were carved with his Celery and other treats put thru holes and sticking out of the Pumpkin.  THAT is how to do a fun Enrichment.  I'm not sure whose responsibility it is to think up the Enrichments, so I won't point any fingers, but I do know the Keepers work with what they get, and there is at least one Staffer whose job is Enrichment.  So, in my opinion, this boils down to plain laziness on someone's part.  That said, poor Gauhati had little Holiday fun, and enjoyed his shower more.  I never saw him touch the Pumpkin.  (update monday 10.29 - big thank you to Keeper Ingrid who gave him a carved one with treats in it yesterday!)  ...  Then I went to Big Cats.  The only thing they had was a carved Pumpkin.  They did have treats in them, so I'm not faulting this effort, although you can see by photos, past efforts were "more".  Laying out a theme on hay (scented hay even better) would have made it special for them.  ... Last I went to see Tucker the Hippo.  In the past I remember one of the best sights was watching them chomp on whole Pumpkins and I'm pretty sure Tucker had a Pumpkin last year.  This year,  Tucker got a couple Apples and what looked like a Bell Pepper.  Seriously??  Three pieces of produce that he probably gets everyday anyway?   Awful.

I had planned to go again today, but honestly, aside from being able to eat a dozen pieces of candy and see hundreds of kids in costumes, it was barely more than just another day at the Zoo.

In 2010 my friend Lee and I were making Enrichment Toys from Feb-Oct.  Some of the last things we did on a regular basis were Halloween themed.  We made them for the weekends prior to the Zoo's annual event, as we didn't want to interfere with what they had going on.   ....  Horrifically, what they had going on, turned out to be a mess that included giving one of the Lions a box with huge staples and cellophane tape.   More information about Enrichment Toys here:  http://sanfranciscozoocrime.blogspot.com/2012/05/san-francisco-zoo-you-sure-have-got.html

Here are some photos of the Toys we made.  ...

All the photos shown here, both the Zoo's previous efforts and the ones Lee and I produced, are what this and all Holiday Events should reflect.  An event should be a celebration.  Enrichment items given should be different  than something they would get any day.   Something they could have fun with.   Toys and Pumpkin WITH treats, THAT = a Halloween Enrichment presentation.
