Sad News. Columbus Zoo Tiger Dies From Covid

Sadly (for this poor Soul), everyone thinks Covid is over.  The Government has led people to believe that the vaccine is immunity.  They have continued lead communities into the surge yo-yo.  Government has bowed to the self-entitled who boo-hoo about mask fatigue.  They have never been strong in enforcement, and now have reduced even further with the obvious position that they don't care if anyone gets sick or dies, just don't clog the hospitals.  And then there are the masses of asses who never thought Covid was a valid thing, so never followed good hygiene precautions, never wore masks, and rebelled against any requests to adhere to requested protocols.

Masking mandates for inside stores, especially those with food, should have never been removed.  Now we have even more people not only up our asses heavy breathing next us with no mask, but coughing all over without covering their mouth.  The free coughers have multiplied in the wake of mask removal.  No one covers their mouth.  They got used to not having to?  and that has carried over.  Think twice about how to handle your fresh produce people!  Even with masks during the start of pandemic, there was never any respect to distancing by others, you had to just make sure you kept your distance.  Everything was on us to keep ourselves safe.  There was never, as the tagline was touted, "We are in this together".  No, we have always been left to fend for ourselves.

Unfortunately captive Animals are at the mercy of the establishments they live in and their caregivers.

Unfortunately Zoo's have decided to follow State and Local Health Department guidelines, not only for visitors but for staff.  I have written much about SFZoo policies in regard to masking during the past two years.  I gave up because they too follow Government guidelines.   I'm not going to change their position, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to be vocal that I think this is a big mistake and a negligent one.

I have thought this since the change over a month ago, it could have been longer.  I may not have written about it, but reading this news I think it's important to document, that safety for those in captive care is still important.  Regardless of what Government guidelines are, protocols for those working with Animals, and for those visiting the enclosures of Covid Vulnerable Species, should not have changed at all.  Government Guidelines are for Humans and the areas they move about in.  That does not include areas where vulnerable species live.   Zoo's can dictate their own safety guidelines.  That is, if they want to.  If they care to keep the non-humans in their care safe.

I have seen a mash-up in regards to safety for vulnerable species at our SFZoo.  There is absolutely NO mask requirement for visitors at enclosure areas.  I have seen Animal Care Staff passing by those areas without a mask as well.  I have seen Keepers wearing a mask when interacting with the Animals, in areas visible to the public.  I do not know what the overall current protocol is, as early in the change, I did hear it was allegedly the Keepers choice.   That all said, I was very disappointed to learn Keepers who have been potentially exposed to Covid have been allowed to come to work.

In addition to masking flexibility, there should also be a concern for hygiene protocol.  While Keeper's (not specifically SFZoo) personal hygiene protocol may be lax, it can not be when touching food or other items used by the Animals.   All the captive Animals who have lost their lives to Covid, contracted it from somewhere.  All reports noted that Keepers follow safety protocol.  Again, they got it from somewhere.  There was and still is a factor that is causing infection. Whether that is lack of extreme hygiene protocol, lack of mask wearing by care staff, or by public, Covid is not over.  Animals can not wear masks.  Zoo's need to take every precaution to prevent innocents from losing their lives.

Someone I shared the news of this loss with, put it simply...

"Very sad and preventable".

RIP Jupiter, Bless Your Soul.   I'm sorry.

Zoo Lifts Mask Requirement at Covid Vulnerable Species Enclosures

I've been working on three posts at the same time, since last weekend, I just haven't felt like I've had it in me to put all the elements together to finish them.  I did just finish watching The Rise of Skywalker, and while what I really want to do is get lost in more non-reality and re-watch the entire Star Wars saga from beginning (I hadn't seen the original since opening day in 1977), I'm going to try to finish the three posts this weekend.

I wanted this next post to be a follow-up on the Accreditation curiosity, but this masking situation came my way first (on Monday April 18).  It was followed a few days later by the result of the the Accreditation status.  I thought I would have posted about it last weekend, but didn't.  The Zoo has finally made note of it in their recent Newsletter out yesterday, so most of you already know.  Our San Francisco Zoo was re-Accredited by the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums), for another five years.  My post will be about why I think this is a disappointing and disturbing outcome.

So, Monday April 18,  a friend was at the Zoo and let me know there were no longer any Mask Required signs at the two Covid Vulnerable Animal enclosure areas (Chimpanzees and Snow Leopards).   In my opinion this is completely Irresponsible.  It’s just another fail, in a long line of what I consider to be Animal Welfare issues at our Zoo.

This move by the Zoo, coincided with California downgrading their mask mandate for schools, and the end to the airline mask mandate, by a Florida Judge that same day.

Let’s be clear, the Zoo can ask anything of it’s visitors, and should, especially if it’s something that is considered a health risk.  If they care.  I have illustrated the lack of care in regard to protecting the Chimpanzees from the first day the Zoo re-opened from the first shutdown and subsequently the Snow Leopards, once it became news that Big Cats, were contracting Covid, and as Snow Leopards in Zoos were dying from the virus.  It took over a year to get decent signage at Chimpanzees, and only recently has there been more attention to monitoring the enclosures areas for adherence to the mask requirement.  So, why stop now?

Did I miss something?  Is the Pandemic over?  Are there no longer Covid cases being reported?  Good grief, just because government officials are once again playing yo-yo with mask mandates, it does not mean the virus isn’t out there.  Officials also have given the public a false sense of security and alluding that the vaccine is immunity.  Anyone with half a brain who wants to stay safe will continue to mask up, regardless of whether someone says you don’t have to.  It’s up to each person to do what they feel is safe for them.  Through these last two years, no one is going to protect you, except you.  That said, Who’s protecting the Animals?

Captive Animals depend on their caregivers to protect them.  In a Zoo setting, the Zoo Director is the policy maker.  So I ask our SFZoo Director Tanya Peterson, Why did you lift the mask requirement at these two Covid Vulnerable Species enclosures?

Considering what I’ve witnessed in the past, it is my opinion, that the Zoo powers were anxiously waiting to have something mandated (read, an excuse) to back up a decision like this.  I would bet they couldn’t wait to not have to monitor people in those areas.  In my opinion, it comes down to laziness. Outside of Keepers and some other concerned Staffers, no one else seemed to take the vulnerability seriously.  It always seemed like it was a hassle to even bother with it.

I had not planned to visit the Zoo that week of April 18, but I needed to see and document the no signage situation myself.  The day I went out there, visitors were leaning over barriers, within feet of the enclosure fencing at both Chimpanzees and Snow Leopards.  That is to be expected, considering there are no rules in place.

What I didn’t expect was to see two Keepers with no masks walk into and through the Chimpanzee area.  One Keeper who works with the Big Cats, and another who is newer and since I haven’t been going much, I don’t know what department he works in.  He walked through the Chimp path and was close to the fencing, when he coughed, not even covering his mouth.  The Cat Keeper, works with Covid Vulnerable Species, he really should no better.   I was shocked and disturbed at the disregard for the health of the Chimpanzees.   They should both be ashamed, but the Cat Keeper even more so.   I have to wonder now what the policy is for Keepers?  Are they still required to wear masks while working with those Animals?  I noticed the Ape Staff still wearing N95s, but in light of the disregard for the Chimps, what is going on at Cats?

My words of warning in previous posts remain in effect.  The San Francisco Zoo had better hope no Animals contract Covid.

Not posting in a timely manner, sometimes works out ok, as new information comes my way.  Sometimes I use it for separate posts, sometimes it really lends to what I'm currently working on, like with this subject.  Seems almost everyday the past two weeks, I've heard something that supports my thoughts about this.

When I’m in the car, I listen to news/talk radio.  I usually catch the KCBS has a segment called Ask An Expert, a few times a week.  Throughout the last couple years, they have exclusively had on medical professionals to speak and answer questions related to Covid.  There were two separate segments the week of the 18th that I want to quote from, as in light of the masking situation at our Covid Vulnerable Animals, I was saying Yes! to these Dr's words.

The expert on April 19 was Dr Panagis Galiatsatos, John Hopkins School of Medicine.  The host noted that because of the increase in home testing, where results aren't reported and the decrease in PCR testing, the case numbers can't be trusted as they are not accurate.  In response, Dr Galiatsatos said, "... a key piece of data has been robbed of us... Just pretend the whole world has COVID-19 again, and do your best to not catch it... This means still wearing a face mask out in public. Even if the public health requirements don't take this into account, individuals should...  We still need to be more vigilant, ...it doesn't need to be a disruption, we can have minor inconveniences to know we are protecting everyone during this pandemic."

The expert on April 20 was Dr Robert Siegel, Dept of Microbiology and Immunology at Stanford.  The host lead-in was, "Mask Mandates are going out the window across the Country, but should you still wear one?" ... Dr Siegel responded, "Despite the Mask Mandate, nothing has changed in terms of the actual Virus. For me I plan to continue wearing a mask."  He continued,  "I don't think that the overturning of the mask mandate was based on public health considerations, I think it was considerations of whether or not they should be forcing people to wear masks. ... (Regarding the rise in cases...) "...people have changed their behavior and are now doing alot of things they weren't previously, so the risk is going up... they are letting their guard down, or to be more metaphoric, they are letting their masks down." ... (Regarding outdoor exposure...) "The thing that is transmitting the virus is when you are breathing the air of infected individuals... so if you want to stay safe you need to avoid being in the airspace of people whose status you don't know.  If you are in the air space of someone infected, you can STILL get infected outside"

On Tuesday this past week, Dr Fauci was quoted saying . "We are certainly, in this country, out of the pandemic phase".   I was like is he crazy?  Which is not the first time I've thought Fauci had steered Americans wrong.  He must have gotten blow-back from that nonsense, as the next day he said, "We are in a different moment,... By no means does that mean the pandemic is over".   Good grief.

This weeks local News Article Titles:

April 26 Bay Area infections up 110% in one month

April 26 Vice President Kamala Harris contracted Covid.  She was vaccinated and double boosted.

April 28 Ruby Princess cruise ship reports 37 Coronavirus cases after docking in San Francisco

April 30 SF Giants confirm Covid outbreak, five players sidelined.  All Vaccinated and double boosted.

I heard a quote on Thursday by a BART Spokesperson, in relation to reinstating a mask mandate.  "It's a small thing to ask our riders to do,..."   So I say, Why can't the Zoo do the same?  It IS a small thing to ask the visitors (and apparently some staffers) to do, to keep our animals healthy and safe. ... Again, IF they care.

The Vaccine is not Immunity.  The Virus can still be contracted.  The Virus can still be transmitted.  Even Outside!!!

So, I repeat the question to San Francisco Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, Why did you lift the Mask Requirement at these two Covid Vulnerable Species enclosures?

In my opinion the removal of this Zoo Mandate, continues to put the Chimpanzees and Snow Leopards at risk.

Great Plains Zoo Snow Leopard Passes Away From Covid - Protecting Captive Animals

Baya the female Snow Leopard lost her life to Covid.   She was the first non-human casualty to the virus in a Zoo setting.  RIP Baya, Bless Your Soul.

Screencap Great Plains Zoo FB

Big Cats and Great Apes seem to be the captive species most affected.  The first reported case was a Tiger at the Bronx Zoo in April 2020, close to the start of the pandemic.  Since then there have been many Covid cases in the captive animal community.

This year San Diego seems to have been hit repeatedly.  In January, eight Gorillas at their Safari Park were infected, in July the Zoo's two Snow Leopards, and in August six Sumatran Tigers at the Safari Park came down with Covid.  Among them, possibly our own Jillian and Teddy, who were transferred there not long before.

Last month saw two Zoo's with large groups infected.  Eighteen Gorillas at Zoo Atlanta, and Nine Big Cats at DCs National Zoo, including their African Lion Matriarch Shera, who came very close to having her life end due to virus complications.  Thankfully in the last few days she is doing better, but her condition is still guarded.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, I have been roaring in person and via this blog, about the lack of protection in the way of signage, distancing and sheltering, at our San Francisco Zoo Chimpanzee yard.

I spend most of my Zoo visits at that enclosure and admittedly worried most for them, as Chimpanzee Jamie would almost exclusively, sit at the netting in a place that was considerably less than six feet from Visitors, expelling possibly contaminated particles on her, and into the enclosure.

It took over a year for the Zoo to get proper signage in that area.  There was never any additional barriers to distance people or any kind of physical sheltering added.

It was not lost on me that the Snow Leopards and Bobcat enclosures were also vulnerable in proximity to Visitor aerosols.  Earlier this year, in a post dated January 17, I wrote ...

Regardless of whether I mentioned this or not, the Zoo should have been and still should be posting awareness signs regarding Mask wearing around all Vulnerable Species.  While neither the Snow Leopards or Bobcat linger at the fencing, aerosol particles travel up to twenty-seven feet, and that is this distance that should be used as a guideline for distance between random Humans and the Animals who are considered a Vulnerable Species.

Yesterday I saw a photo posted to the Fiona the Hippo Facebook Group, that made me gasp.  The San Antonio Zoo is conducting their behind the scenes Animal Experiences, allowing Visitors to not only go without Masks, but also feed the Animals without gloves.  The photo also shows a Keeper with no Mask.  I know it's Texas, but geez, talk about irresponsible.  I have to wonder if the AZA has a Covid Safety mandate for their Accredited Zoos?

I have made a case for protecting the Animals from Visitor aerosols.  While I think that it is necessary to take all possible precautions from the public side, infection from Zoo staff that has access to indoor animal quarters, has to be considered the most likely point of transmission.  Since Keepers have the closest contact, they are the ones that have been linked in most reports.

As I questioned above, Is there a national mandate for Animal Staff safety protocol?  Are all Keepers required to be vaccinated?  Wear masks and gloves?  At our SFZoo, all Staff seem to be following the local mask mandate, and only once did I see an Animal Care staffer without a mask.  I was shocked.  I saw the Vet at the fencing, mask down, observing the Chimpanzees.  I'm still bothered by it.

Mask wearing protocol has been a irk of mine from the start.  I have an endless stream of words and tales, about the subject.  The purpose of mentioning it here, is that there has to be some reason these captive animals are getting infected.  Are their Keepers not adhereing to safety protocols?  I'd be surprised, but not shocked if they weren't.  For those who are, mask handling and good hygiene practises, in my opinion, has to play a part in transmission.

In my observation over the past nineteen months, I've been disturbed by the lack of attention to mask handling and good hygiene.  In recent years I've been hyper-sensitive to other people's funk, so going into this my personal protocol may be considered extreme, but since we are about to be in this health crisis situation two years, extreme isn't a bad thing.   And those in close contact with others, non-human and human, especially caregivers, should adopt extreme protocols.

People might be wearing their mask and wearing gloves, but did they sanitize their hands prior to putting that gear on?  If not, whatever was on hands prior is now being transferred about.   I see people taking masks out of their pockets, touching the inside and then putting them over their mouth and nose, which are the places that the mask is supposed to be protecting.  It makes no sense, and it has to have played a part in the spread. Mask handling should be done by ear loops only. Additionally, masks that continually slip, need to go. Masks need to fit properly so they aren't being touched constantly.  In regards to Keepers, maybe it's time they double mask, adding an N95 or medical mask under the cloth mask that they should be changing/washing daily.

I have a post following this one, that contains multiple small items.  One of those items is regarding a huge new sign at the crossroads after you enter past the gate house.  It touts the Zoo's Conservation efforts.  In my opinion, it seems to have been put there at this time, in preparation for the Zoo's upcoming AZA Accreditation inspection, as Conservation participation is on their checklist.

In one of my early posts about the lack of awareness and mandate signage at Chimps, I noted that I thought signage about Vulnerable Species and the importance of adhereing to mask wearing around them, could be added to the wood fencing that borders the yard path.  With that idea in mind, the size, positioning and message of that conservation signage, could have been better utilized as a Covid and Animals Educational tool. ... Education is also on the inspection checklist, and current crises that effect Animals never seems to be part of the Zoo's awareness efforts.

I hope better precautions and protocols are put in place, so there won't be any more Animals infected.

Say some Prayers for all the Animals still experiencing symptoms of Covid, and hope they all recover soon.

Why is Zoo Management Still Taking Risks With The Chimpanzees?

This was not my next planned post in draft, but... If I only get to publishing one post this weekend, it had to be this one.

I've been trying to write this post for a couple days.  It's been brewing in my mind for months, so it's not a new issue, just a tired one.

As I sat here last night ready to start, I got side-tracked by an article that was posted to Twitter by the SF Chronicle. ... "Bay Area counties urge vaccinated people to wear masks again as delta variant tightens grip."

No Shit! was my reaction, and I said it outloud, with a disgusted chuckle.   I knew this would happen.  Telling people they could discard masks was irresponsible.  As well as the extra vulnerability in stores now, this allowance has seemed to increase an already bad no-mask situation at the Zoo, specifically at the Chimp yard.

What I'm about to write for this blog post, about the Zoo's Covid Safety in regard to the Chimpanzees, is entirely based on thoughts and facts before yesterday's news.  I will note that news just confirms even more, that there needs to be stronger attention to protecting the Chimps.  Contrary to what the masses of asses across this land believe, this Pandemic is not over, and as long as the word Variant is in the News and on the loose, the Vulnerable need to be Protected.

It was March 9th, a week before the 2020 Shutdown when I first wrote about my concern for the Chimpanzees, and Orangutans when they were using the Chimp yard.  Apes can catch the same things as Humans, and with the perimeter fencing very close to the yard netting in several spots,  I felt they were very exposed in that exhibit.

I heard that during the Shutdown, the path around the Chimp Yard was closed to non-authorized staff.   When the Shutdown was lifted, I expected it to still be closed.  It was not, and I was pissed.

Why would Management open that path to the public, when it was not even open to most staff?

From my observations, there was nothing in place to protect the Chimpanzees and Orangutans.  There were no barriers to make sure people were kept at a distance from the fencing, and there was no signage, noting that these Apes who share our DNA, are vulnerable, and reminding that Masks were mandatory at all times in that area.

I wrote about the Chimps vulnerbility and yard exposure five times (mar 9, aug 11, aug 14, nov 29, feb 21) since the start of the Pandemic.  Using the mandated guideline of six feet distance,  everytime someone stands at that fence unmasked, that in some places is less than five feet, I'd say even less, and one of the Chimps is sitting there, they are vulnerable to being exposed.  Factually, aerosol particles can travel up to 27 feet, so the whole area is a problem.  I used this graphic in one of my posts.

My concern has never stopped.  During the first few weeks, I waited for something to be done.  Finally at the end of week three (after reopening), I talked to the Head of Safety.  I expressed my concern, and questioned if anything was going to be done to protect them.  I suggested a plastic barrier running the length of the perimeter, especially in those really close areas, either acrylic, or more cost effective sheeting.  He said it was being talked about.  Talked about while they sat out there, day after day, with people breathing on them?  Not good enough, but it never is.   I suggested signage at both ends of path, stating masks mandatory, that they share our DNA and are vulnerable.  He said, good idea, going to write that down, and literally pulled out paper and pen.  I'm sorry, but there are alot of people there, making alot of money, doing a whole lot of nothing on many fronts.  This situation could be a life and death one, and a member of the public has to approach them about it?

So, a few days later, the start of week four, and I arrive at the yard, assuming I'd at least see some signs, and I see nothing.  Unexcuseable.  The Zoo has computers, color printers and laminators, there was no reason for there not to be signs, frankly by the end that day I suggested it.  I'd have had a sign there within the hour.   But here we were four weeks later after reopening, five months since the start of the pandemic and nothing.

I blogged and complained about the perimeter fence issue what seemed like endlessly.  Then a ridiculous attempt at sheltering the most vulnerable place in the fencing went up.  You can read about that in other posts, I'm only mentioning it here for the timeline and to note that finally a few weeks ago, after staring at this thing for almost a year, I realized, it was not meant to protect the Chimps at all.

Week five I arrived to see two signs, written by the Ape Keepers, hanging on the fencing.  Their words echoed what I suggested, and I was happy for these, but still felt more could be done.  The next week, these signs were gone.   Management had taken them down.  I blogged and asked,  Why?  I still don't understnad this action.

Why would the Management of an Animal Care Facility, remove something that was acting as a deterrent, helping to keep these Beings safe?

I suggested in a blog post, that they put some of the circles they had at other exhibits, at the yard.  The red circles did appear, but in the only place in the Zoo, they are half circles and placed right at the fencing.  Why couldn't they be full and placed back a bit?  The mind boggles.

No further attempt to protect the Chimps and Orangutans was made as we headed into the second shutdown.  The Zoo was closed for two months.  During that time, the San Diego Zoo Gorillas contracted Covid.  When SFZoo reopened, the path was still open and there was no signage, no barrier around fencing.  Unbeleivable.   Then four weeks later, this sign appeared.

I haven't written anything against this sign.  In reviewing the post I made about it, I can't believe I didn't express my actual thoughts.  I must have been delirious from the effort of there being a sign at all.  So, let's talk about that sign.  First, and I've said this before, the Zoo's signs are too wordy.  No one stands and reads wordy signs.  I think long-winded info is great, but in addition to short and to the point.  I have no idea who writes the text for the signs, but geez, it's always a miss.  Why is the lead buried?   I get why eating is mentioned, but wearing a Mask is the lead.  Also, if the sign plainly said,  Mask wearing at all times in this area, it's unnecessary to mention eating.

This sign should have looked like this, along with a Stop Sign and Mask Graphic.  Would have added myself but my current photo editor doesn't work that way.

Last year they had a sign along the entry line, that simply said, Masks Are Required While Waiting In Line.  Why didn't the Chimps get a simply worded sign last year?  Even this newer version is configured better than the one at Chimps.  Why?

There could have been a long-winded sign posted to the fencing along the path with the other signage.  In fact over a year later, there should be. THAT is an educational point that should be made.  ... A few weeks ago I thought it would be a good idea to put Mask Graphics at multiple points along the fence.  The other day there were graphics about World Chimpanzee Day placed how I imagined the mask graphics could be.

Other signage I've seen online that is simple ... Signs like this should be at all areas where Masks are required.

Oh, and not simple is this newish sign at entry ...

No one is paying any attention to this one.  People on skinny paths wearing no mask as they walk right by.  People in the Chimp Dayroom wearing no masks come and stand right next to you.  The sign should just say, ... Masks Required In Some Areas.  Please Adhere To Signs.  Please Mask and Distance From Others When Six Feet Not Possible. ... People don't always read signs to begin with, they aren't going to read a novel as they enter.

A couple more notes about the plastic barrier idea.  So, it was never done to protect the Chimps, yet it was done at the Train to protect Humans.  I even saw some draped over the Bird Aviary at the Puente recently.  There's obvious value in using plastic sheeting as a protector, so again, Why not for the Chimps?

Sixteen Months later, in my opinion any effort  Zoo management has put forward has failed.   The Chimps are vulnerable every minute they are out in the yard.  That is Irresponsible and Dangerous to their well-being.

With the Delta variant is on the loose, and others will surely follow, there is still a desperate need to protect the Chimps.  The Zoo has been packed, even on the weekdays that I'm there.  People from out of the area are visiting, some don't even bring masks into the Zoo.  The week before last, I ended up at Chimps later in the day than usual, and I asked no less than forty people in ten minutes to wear a mask.  That number is not exaggerated.

Unfortunately, there is a good percentage of people who want to challenge the Mask requirement.  They are obnoxious, and argumentative.   One guy even asked me if the Chimps were Vaccinated because maybe he can catch something from them. ...  Digressing for one second, since Oakland Zoo was in the News recently for vaccinating some of their Animals.  I personally would never suggest this, as just like with people, there could be side effects.  I had a reaction that has lingered, and would not want that to happen to a non-Human Being who can't communicate what they are experiencing.  And with our Chimps being Seniors, that is something to consider.  That would be on Animal Care Staff to decide, not any member of the public.   That guy was way off base even questioning it.

The Zoo makes no attempt to deter this behavior, other than with that sign.  There is a Docent at the exhibit on Mondays, who tries to do her best.  She is only there a few hours, so its a free for all the rest of the time.  I have heard Keepers repeatedly ask people to put on their masks.   It is not the Keepers job to monitor the crowd.  The Zoo short staffs Keepers to begin with, and they have to be security as well?  Their job is to take care of the Animals.   The Zoo needs to staff that area at all times with Docents who are wearing the Safety Monitor Badges they had last year.  When that isn't possible, there is no reason why Security can't station there when they aren't on a call.  There seems to be two Security Guards in the Parking lot and frankly, the Chimps well-being is more important than Humans and their Cars.

Bottom line, that area needs Signage and Monitoring.  When the later isn't available, I think the path needs to be closed.  I previously suggested and used this photo, the placement of metal barriers to keep people at a distance, while still be able to view the Chimps in the yard.

There is no reason this can't be done.  Now that the Orangutans are in Triple Grotto, they are viewed at a distance. So viewing the Chimps outside at a distance for their safety, shouldn't be an issue. As well the Dayroom is open and the Chimps can be viewed close-up in there.

I had an idea this morning that I floated by someone to see if it was good to post or totally something that would not fly.  They said it was good, so at least one other person agrees.

If the path was closed as pictured, but only to the general public.  That way it keeps the numbers down and filters out random visitors and out of towners, who I'd say make-up most of the no-mask offenders.  Members should then be given the opportunity to gain access by agreeing to remain masked (necessary as I've even seen Guardian Members with no mask) in that area, and purchasing an access wrist band (like those rubber ones) for say five bucks each, for themselves, family and friends.  The wrist bands are for easy ID from staff, as well the funds generated can go to Chimp Enrichment.

Ok, I'm exhausted and anxious, as I worry constantly about the Chimps sitting at that fence possibly breathing contaminated air.

It's your move, San Francisco Zoo.

New > KRON News Reporting ICU Capacity Jump Above Level Needed To ReOpen Zoo!

Just checking the News.  This from KRON yesterday, ...

So, what does this mean for the Zoo being able to ReOpen?  Who knows.  Nothing about this Shutdown has seemed justified or logical.

As I posted a couple weeks ago, per the State Health Dept, the Bay Area, which includes San Francisco and ten other counties, must register at 15% for a projected four week period.  The Sacramento Zoo and region, while not registering at 15% reached the projected time frame and was allowed to ReOpen last week.  The Bay Area has been fluctuating between 0 and 6% for over a month.  I wonder if that fluctuation could count against any immediate go ahead to reopen.

The sudden increase is surprising, considering how low its been and additionally with all the people walking around with no mask and not distancing.  I surely didn't expect numbers to rise this fast, but it's a great welcome!  Hope we hear something about the Zoo soon!

Also waiting for replies to recent emails to Dr Mark Ghaly from the State Health Dept and Governor Newsom, regarding the classification logic (Botanical Garden, Tea Garden, Shopping Malls, Playgrounds, yet No Zoos).

There was a curious notation on the California Dept of Health website, under the (Zoo) Industry Guidance topic, that allowed for Zoos in the Purple Tier to be open "Outdoors with modifications".  So again like stated in previous posts, questioning the logic of certain places allowing to be open when other like places can not.  This shines a wonder on why Zoos were closed during this second Shutdown.

New > Even Bernie Wonders Why the Orangutans Have No Home Of Their Own!

By now everyone has probably heard about Bernie's Mittens and seen at least one Bernie meme editing his image from the Inauguration in various places around the World.

Last night via the Bernie Anywhere Generator, the outspoken Defender of Rights made a stop at our San Francisco Zoo.

By this morning, Bernie's force had broken the Internet so to speak.  The Generator is no longer working, as it's popularity turned it into another victim of Greed.  These days, money grubbers are killing all they can, just to put a squeeze on the regular folk.  All the bullshit of the last year and foreseeable future, and Google has to strangle the guy who gave us some fun.  UG.

Anyway, I had worked on another one of those dang posts in draft, that I planned for this weekend.  Instead of finishing it, this seems like the perfect time to work on and hopefully finish my long overdue Orangutan Update.

As I like to make all posts stand alone, the update will include a recap of Ollie and Amoi's history at the Zoo, and where they stood on getting a home of their own, as of December 6, the last day the Zoo was open before the current Shutdown, over Nineteen Months since their arrival at the SFZoo.

Update: Generator is back up!  If interested here is the link.

San Diego Zoo Gorillas Contract Covid - SFZoo Animal Safety

Monday was a heavy day for me.  Had a few long conversations about Zoo stuff, including the information about the ICU capacity percentage that is dictating when the Zoo can ReOpen.  Then I heard on talk radio that the ICU number dipped below 1%. Then the news report that the Gorillas at the San Diego Zoo had gotten Covid.  Then that one of the Zoo's most valued (in my opinion) Animal Care Staffers was leaving.  It was alot of bummed out stuff in a short period of time.

When I heard about the Gorillas, my mind went to three things.  First, sadness that these poor Beings had contracted this virus.  Second, that having them infected, may make Zoos even more vulnerable to ReOpening.  Third, my feeling that our Chimpanzees and Orangutans are in an enclosure that has put them in a risky proximity to the public the whole time the Zoo was open.

If this is the first you've heard about the San Diego Zoo Gorillas, here is a screencap of information from the article linked below it.

Let's all send some good thoughts their way.  Pray that they all recover without any complications.

I have long complained that Zoos are not categorized appropriately and are not included with other outdoor facilities, like our Botanical Garden.  Why? has been a legitimate question.  I still think it is, but now wonder if State Officials won't use this transmission incident as yet another reason to keep Zoos closed.  If there is indeed a risk factor of transmission From the public To any Animals, of course their safety should be the top priority.  It would seem that is something each Zoo would have to identify themselves based on the enclosure distance and barrier type.

As I mentioned our Great Apes enclosure is something I've written about a few times. I need to reiterate previous concerns as they are more valid now than ever.

This is the most recent post regarding the subject.

The above link is pretty comprehensive, so I'll try to make this as condensed as possible.

The barrier fence around the yard is varying distances from the open air fencing.  At some points, it is definitely less than six feet. When news of the virus broke in early March, I was concerned about people breathing on the Chimps, as they often sit right at the fence.  When the Zoo shutdown a week later, I was told that the path around the Chimps had been blocked off, I assume to all staff who didn't need to be in that area.  When the Zoo reopened, I expected the path would still be blocked.  It was not.  Not only was it open, no adjustments to shield the vulnerable portions of the fencing had been made, and there was no additional signage to indicate the Apes (Orangutans also use the yard), were vulnerable to Covid, indicating visitors needed to be masked at all times, especially in that area.  I complained in person and in blog posts.  I relayed that a barrier at the very least in the most vulnerable point, and Covid Vulnerable signage, were needed.  A flimsy shield did go up, but no sign, until a couple weeks later when Keepers put their own. That sign was taken down, allegedly by management. The Zoo was open just over four months, and every day people with their masks off gathered in front of the fence while the Chimps sat against it, unprotected.

In light of this awful news from San Diego, I am even more furious that my concerns were not taken seriously.  It is very upsetting to think our Chimpanzees and Orangutans were left vulnerable for who knows what reason.

When the Zoo does reopen, I hope better precautions are taken to protect the Chimp yard, and All Animals that have barriers where people can be at a distance of less than six feet.  Even six feet in my opinion isn't enough, if we are going by the documented aerosol travel distance of up to thirty feet.   One guideline I saw recommended six feet if both are masked, thirty if unmasked.  There aren't many enclosures that allow less than six feet, but special attention to the Chimp yard,  Snow Leopards, and Bobcat, should especially be taken into consideration as both Ape and Cat species have been infected.  AND if the Chimp yard path remains open, which I don't think it should, they really need to have a clear barrier, plexiglass or plastic sheeting, that goes around the entire perimeter, not dark mesh in one portion.  AND the Covid Vulnerable Signs are a must at both entrance points.  It's outrageous that this even has to be said.

When Will The Zoo ReOpen? - Shutdown Update

I previously posted about what I consider an illogical thought process about how businesses were categorized for opening during the shutdown.  I noted that I planned to inquire about this and also what "Indefinitely" might look like, weeks, months, until everyone is vaccinated...?  I only got to the later.  I inquired and got an answer from someone I know in government, but didn't get to posting the information right away.  It has since been in the news, so some of you might already know, or had previously understood the situation.  Myself and many I know didn't.

The Open status of businesses is determined by the State.  San Francisco is unfortunately in a Bay Area grouping that includes eleven counties.  In order for the Zoo to open, the Bay Area ICU capacity must be at 15%.

This is the best online source I've found to check daily status:

https://abc7news.com/bay-area-icu-capacity-hospital-california-stay-at-home-order-santa-clara/8478535/

So, while SF is currently at 24%, down from 35% earlier in the week, the BA as a whole is at 6%, which is up from Monday when it dipped below 1%.  ... Lots of fluctuation over the course of a handful of days, but staying overall low.

With low numbers, for over a month, I would be surprised if the Zoo is able to open before Summer.  I hope my assessment is wrong, but seems like were screwed til a good number of the masses are vaccinated, since we can't count on the majority of people to follow safe practices.

As I've said before, it's my personal opinion that this Pandemic has dragged on, because of the No Maskers and non-Distancers.  So every time I see someone non-compliant with the guidelines, I look at them as the reason why the Zoo can't open.  The reason why we are heading into a year of not being able to live our lives normally.

New > Info Added 1.24.21 ... Zoo Playground Now Open? - Update

So, there's a question mark in the title, as I'm not sure whether Open means, open to all, or just to those who the Zoo invites.

On Tuesday January 5, I posted about the development of the Playground Opening.  At the time, I didn't think there was going to be a need for an update.  Silly me, by Thursday things had changed.

Before posting, I called the Membership Office to see exactly what the Playground Reservation was all about.  There wasn't much more to it, other than the allowance of the Playground only to be open.  Relevant to note that Membership was surprised that the Reservations had been posted to the website, as they had not worked out the details yet.

I had made a few reservations, since when I saw it listed, I didn't know what the details were.  After talking to Membership, I canceled all but one, as I didn't want to take away a Playground option for kids, since I was obviously not going to use the Playground.  I kept the one, as I still wanted to check out the situation, as well be able to have access to the parking lot and maybe get to see my Cow pal Slider from the perimeter fence. as well I could see the Savannah.

So, Thursday I got an email and phone call that my Reservation had been canceled, stating they weren't ready to open.  I looked at the website and the Reservation option was no longer up.  This all begged questions, so I called to get clarification.  I asked if all reservations had been canceled or just mine (because you know, ... it's me lol!)  All were canceled, they weren't ready to open.  I asked if when they were ready, would the reservations be back on the site and open to all or only by invite as they did during the first shutdown, when they allowed only Members they invited to visit the Zoo?  Yes, would be open to all Members.

I decided I was not going to reserve again when they did open up, but wanted to monitor the situation anyway.  I didn't check the website again until the other day.  There were four reservation slots only for a Saturday and Sunday.  All were sold out.  I checked this morning and there were daily reservations through the end of the month.  All sold out.

The curious things are, when they were first listed, only the weekends were sold out, all other days were completely open and there has been no mention of the Playground being open by reservation, on any of the Zoo's Social Media.  So how are 40+ events sold out?   My conclusion is that possibly these reservations are not being openly offered, instead being obtained by invite only, and then marked as Sold Out.  Of course I could be wrong, but this is how it seems to me.

So, I apologize if my alert to a potential Zoo experience option got anyone's hopes up, when it may very well not be open to all Members equally.  Those who have kids and want to take advantage of the Playground, should call Membership and inquire about a reservation or invitation.

New > 1.24.21 Additional Info - Instead of making a new post I am adding to this one for documentation purposes.  I never read the fine print on the Tickets but when I went to delete my Playground one that was cancelled, I did.  It notates that Playground reservation includes access to the Children's Zoo.  This of course peaks my curiosity, as it was not mentioned to me when I inquired about the details, and is this even allowed?  It does not seem in line with the Shutdown order.  So, whether this is still an active part of the reservation, I don't know.  I probably won't be seeking to find out further because I find the situation exhausting, when the Zoo could have made it not only simple but fair to all Members.

News Flash! The Zoo Will Remain Shutdown Indefinitely.

After my post yesterday, I had planned to move up my Orangutan Update for today.  I looked forward to lifting that weight, unfortunately a new one haa been added.

I tried to do this post last night, but just couldn't find the words that weren't laden with vulgarity.  I tried to form sentences, through welling tears of frustration, as I sat listening to the revelers at the bar around the corner, that continues to host gatherings on their patio that is a few backyards from mine.  The level of upset, was mounting.  Once again, the people who have given the middle finger to this Pandemic are the reason we are still in this shit for almost ten months.

The opening paragraph went like this...

Well, Happy F'ing New Year from the City of San Francisco!  They couldn't wait til tomorrow?  Had to get it out there on a night when we are all thinking about what the New Year will bring.

I caught this by chance on Twitter, a user wrote:  Breaking News! ... The Zoo would remain closed Indefinitely.

Here is the link to the News story.

https://sf.eater.com/2020/12/31/22208293/san-francisco-lockdown-quarantine-shutdown-outdoor-dining-sf

The full Press Release for the updated Orders is in the article.  This is a screencap notating the Zoo.

I read this about 9:30p and far past midnight I was still fuming.  Initially I made a video as I did during the first shutdown, but YouTube wouldn't recognize the tablet video file.  If you saw any of my videos from that time, you know the vibe.  So trying to form sentences that were suitable for this blog was not coming to me easy.  So I'm giving it another go now.  Believe me, the Outrage is still very real and will continue to be, because keeping the Zoo closed is not justifiable.

I still have the same questions as I did in June when the Botanical Garden was allowed to reopen and the Zoo was not.  This time around there are even more questions.  All basically started with WTF?

Since March, at the start of the Pandemic, we were given guidelines at City, State, and National level.  Those of us who wanted to stay safe, picked through the inconsistent advice and have worn a mask, distanced, and upped our hygiene practice from the start.  Government continued to be fluid with guidelines, and it was clear, those guidelines and orders were not going to be enforced and because of that, this was not going away.

Over nine months later, with inconsistent orders, the situation of Shutdowns has gotten ridiculous.  Don't get me wrong, if everything shutdown for a short period of time I'd have no problem with it.  In fact, as this went on a few months, in hindsight, I wondered why this was not done at the start and we might have been over it quickly.  That said, it was not done, and here we are.

When the second Stay At Home Order happened, that closed the Zoo last month, I thought, hello, wasn't the first one never lifted?  Stay At Home in SF is a joke.  No one stays at home.  From the start the Park looked like a weekend day, everyday and still does.  The majority do not wear masks, never have.  Most don't make any effort to Distance.  As a Richmond District lifelong resident, the Park had been part of my daily routine, but I've given up going to the Park, because for me, its one big obstacle course of health assault.

I'm mostly not telling anyone anything they don't already know about the situation, but trying to illustrate why these Orders are nonsense, if they are not enforced.

No repercussion for non-compliance has been frustrating, but the Zoo was open.  Now, it's a whole new frustration as the current restrictions make even less sense than they did in June when the Botanical Gardens was allowed to reopen before the Zoo.  The BG has been allowed to remain open.

Over the last month, we have seen what I consider biased exemptions.  I don't get all the news, as I only listen to news radio the three days a week I'm out and whatever comes my way via Twitter.  To my surprise and outrage, the first one I heard about was Shopping Malls being open.  WTF?  Then it was the Playgrounds, after the State bowed to the whiners.  The other night, I found out the Japanese Tea Garden has also been open this whole time.  That place is tight spaced and has skinny paths.  I just went with the outrage as there was one more week and the Zoo would be back open.

So here we are. The Zoo closed Indefinitely.  All the above still gets to happen, yet the Zoo, an outdoor facility has to close.  I need to have someone explain the thought process to this, because it makes no sense and is causing my blood to boil.

I will seek out answers.  I want to know who to blame.  In general, I blame those who have given the middle finger to the situation. The true Epidemic is Self-Entitlement.  I also blame all Government Officials, as allowing non-compliance without repercussions, has caused this Pandemic to continue.  That said, in reference to what can be open and what can not, I want to know who to blame for those decisions. Who decided the SFZoo has to remain shutdown, while other places are open. Is the San Francisco Health Director implementing his own guidelines, or following those of the State?

I need answers how these orders are logical, because as it is, this all just seems to be political lip flapping. If they don't do something, they will be crucified for not doing anything.  Yet what they are doing is not justified.  There is clear imbalance to any reasoning, about the Park places versus the Zoo, and especially after the whole whining gets playgrounds opened crap, this all screams bias.

I read in one of the comments to this news story that the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Desert is open. Here is a link to how this was made possible and a screencap sample of their statement.

Time will tell if other California Zoos will revolt.  All Zoos should have sought to have reclassification of Zoos to outdoor ...  Maybe they did and were denied?  On what basis?

Maybe if the San Francisco Zoo was not part of a City Park system, meaning there was no park to compare it to, then I wouldn't be so outraged, but there is and its a valid comparison.

The San Francisco Zoo is safer than the Park.  The Zoo can be reopened with further reduction in attendance.  They were allowed to reopen in July at 50% which surprised me, as it was higher than other State and National Zoos. If the concern is the gathering aspect, reduce the limit, but closing all together in comparison is outrageous and irresponsible.

This is not just about me being able to go to the Zoo.  This is about fairness.  This is about how asinine reasoning, that will take away funds will affect lives.  Obviously non-Human lives don't matter to Government Officials.

Do these Officials plan to provide financial relief to the Zoos?  All we hear about is relief for businesses, for humans, what about how it affects the non-human lives that depend on the shelter, food, and care that their Zoo homes provide?

Between many worrisome circumstances at the Zoo that have been mounting for years, creating in my opinion a serious decline in the Zoo, and these Shutdowns, I fear our SFZoo won't see 2022.

Response To A Comment From An Anti-Masker

I usually don't get to comment replies this quick, but considering we are on the eve of another Zoo Shutdown, I thought that this comment that came in today would be appropriate to post and respond to at this time.   The irritations about many aspects of this Pandemic, especially why we are still in it, nine months later, have been circling my mind all day.  So let's get to it!

Link to the blog post referenced
is at the bottom of this page

@Brenda -  Thank you for your comment.  As much as I enjoy a good debate, this is not a topic I'm going to engage again,  because I don't have the time, energy or more importantly, the need to.

First, you didn't have to note that you were an Anti-Masker, because your words showed your lack of respect for rules, orders and the health of others.  They illustrated that you are in the category that has given the middle finger to the Pandemic, and you and your like, are more than probably to blame for this situation continuing, for what will soon be a year.

You certainly have the right to do as you want, but that does not make it the right thing.  And while you can do whatever you want outside the Zoo, in the Zoo there are rules that need to be followed.

The Zoo is a controlled environment.  The rules for being on the grounds, as a Visitor or Employee were set in accordance with the City Health Department.  These rules allowed the Zoo to ReOpen.  If these rules were not in place, the Zoo could not have ReOpened.  If the rules are not being followed, the Zoo would have had to close again.  As a Visitor one must agree to follow the rules.  Not following the rules while at the Zoo risks closure, which causes lack of revenue and puts the needs of the Animals in jeopardy.

You started by noting that I called out an Employee for not wearing a Mask.  You are damn right I did.  Employees are not above the rules, and they set the example for Visitors.

In response to my issue with people being unmasked in areas common with masked, and to wear appropriate masks, you called me Entitled.  It is not Entitled to expect rules to be followed, so everyone is safer.  This isn't just about me, contrary to your position as someone who is anti-mask.

That all said, I am Entitled.  Myself and anyone else who wants to stay safe and is following the rules put forth by establishments we enter, and recommendations by health professionals, WE ARE ENTITLED to have the air in our space be as free of unhealthy toxins as possible, especially in a Pandemic when those toxins have proven to be deadly.

Maybe your wish for Christmas should be that no one you care about gets Covid.

And yes, I am a piece of work.  I am confident,  I am opinionated, I am outspoken, and I don't bow to bullshit.  Thank you for the compliment.

Zoo Will Open on June 29th! - Oh NO It Won't!

I can't even describe how pissed off I am right now.  Not at the Zoo, but at this whole Pandemic situation in general.  I have two major issues with Covid coming to Northern California.  First, the Shutdown of the Zoo, and second the people of San Francisco, who have exhibited Self-Entitled behavior in mass for the past couple decades, but have really kicked into overdrive during this Health Crisis.

So yes, the title is right, the Zoo will not be Re-Opening on Monday June 29th as reported in the news yesterday.

Mayor London Breed, who visited the Zoo yesterday (Thursday), and gave the okay to reopen, announced today, that do to concerns in case surges, businesses scheduled to re-open, will not.

This was going to be a very different post today.   I waited for the re-opening news all day yesterday.  Relaoding the Zoo webpage,

as it went from this, ...

to this!

to this!

I was going to report the re-opening news, and direct to the website in regard to Reservation information.  This page came-up when you closed the above one.

Below this contained all the re-opening information, changes and rules.  I didn't screen-cap as I figured those who wanted to see it could go to website.  Now I don't see it there.

Now, unfortunately this post is a rant.  These words have to be said, because this delay could be for months if the "surge in cases" reason is the continued concern.  Places will never be allowed to re-open under a surge concern.

It has been documented all over the States, that places re-opening are seeing surges.  It's going to happen because people are gathering in mass, going to the beach, protests, wherever, not distancing, and all over in general not following rules, not wearing face-covering and not distancing.  It's epidemic in San Francisco, and if our City Officials and Health Department don't see that, then they haven't been to Golden Gate Park.

I'm out three times a week.  Each of those mornings I drive through the Park at 8a.  I'm in and out of the Park through the day.  The majority of people are NOT wearing Face Covering.  That means, No Covering, not even around their neck in case they pass someone.  As well, the majority Do Not make any attempt to Distance when they pass someone. Hell, there is absolutely no distancing happening in stores and people don't even wear their face-covering properly. This is all day, everyday.  San Francisco will never get out of this Crisis with the majority of people giving the rules the middle finger.

Other than being extremely irritated by the disrespect to everyone and everything by these offenders, I would have no problem letting Covid sort out the population of Self-Entitled, BUT these Anti-Maskers and Anti-Distancers are preventing the Zoo from opening.  These people who aren't following the rules, and I'm sure not using hand sanitizer when their out either, are keeping the Zoo closed.  They are keeping other places closed too, but my concern is for the Zoo.  And, Yes!  At this point, in regard to what's happening outside my home, I really only care if I get to see the Chimps and other Zoo Friends again.  I could just cry and probably will later.  I'm also concerned for the future of the Zoo if they do not start generating revenue.

So, my grief I guess is with the City.  I hate to point fingers, but seriously, I have watched as State and local Officials applaud the great job we are doing.  Again, these people obviously never go to the Park, or they would not think that way.  This situation is never going to end if there are not repercussions for those who don't follow the rules.  If there had been back in March we might have been done with this.

All this said, if City Officials will not allow the Zoo to open, then they also need to close some of the places they allowed to open, like the Botanical Garden.  I go to the BG each morning I'm out, and even during the early hour 8-9a, the majority of people have their masks off when inside.  There is no monitoring inside, people left to do whatever.  At least at the Zoo there would be monitoring.

Bottom line, No reason the Zoo can't open.  People have to follow the rules or they will have to leave. If the Botanical Garden can be open, and its free flow in Stores, No reason the Zoo can't open.

Sorry I'm just repeating myself now.  I am so upset I can't even think straight.  I know it might sound ridiculous to be upset by not being able to go to the Zoo, but it's a huge part of my life, and I'm F-ing over being denied because people can't cover their damn face holes!
