SF RecPark Knowingly Lets Bison Meadow Dry Out, Preventing Grazing Animals From Grazing

Last Monday morning, I was out early because of The City scam that is Street Cleaning.  You know the one, where you have to get up early and move your car, so that an overpaid City worker can come by in a truck that puts out no water, and spins dry brushes that only push dirt around.  Anyway, it put me on my regular route through the Park.

Lucky me, the Universe positioned me in the right place, at the right time.  As I turned off Fulton into the Park at 36th, continuing towards the Bison, there were sprinklers on everywhere!  8a must be the magical hour, when all the Parks landscaping gets their thirst satisfied.  All but the Bison's Meadow.

The last time I documented about the state of the Bison's Meadow, because of the SF Rec and Park's negligence, was in an Augest post.  After seeing workers in the Meadow, and the Sprinklers on in May, which I also posted about, I thought FINALLY!  the Sprinklers were fixed.  No such luck.

So, this week, when I saw an over abundance of working sprinklers flooding the areas surrounding the Bison Paddock, I documented the plight of the Bison's Meadow, in not one, but two videos.  One of the enclosure's landscaping, and one with information I gathered while there.

I wanted to make this post with those videos that day, but in addition to a busy week and my procrastination, I have been hesitant.  Every time I thought about it, I also thought of my commentary.  People who know me, who have watched some of my videos, who've read my blog posts, you know that I don't sugarcoat things.  You know that my words are sometimes, well often, laden with variations of the word "fuck".  The frustration of dealing with bullshit, especially the same bullshit, especially when it has to do with the disrespect and wrong treatment of Animals by humans, really sets me off.  And that morning, I just had it with this whole situation with the state of the lack of grazing vegetation for these Beings.

I started to write, I'm old and I'm cranky, but more accurately, this issue is old, and I'm not only cranky, I'm sick of the same old tired subjects.   I'm sick of the Bison's Meadow being dried ass brown, preventing them from their natural grazing behavior.  I'm sick of the barriers at the Zoo not being updated to keep Our Animals safe, even though I've been roaring about it for a dozen years. I'm sick of the Orangutan's living situation. I'm sick of no fundraising at the Zoo for sixteen years, leaving it with so many Needs.  I'm sick of Tanya Peterson,  I'm sick of the Zoological Society, and I'm sick of the Rec and Park, for each of their negligence in managing Our Zoo properly.

As a Richmond District Native and lifelong Resident of sixty-one years,  the Park has always been a part of my everyday life, it's my backyard.  The Zoo and the Park are the places that I frequent the most.  I'm very protective of Animals in general, so when something happens in the Park or at the Zoo, which I've been coming to since I was a babie, I find these issues completely offensive.  If people can't fulfill the position they are tasked with, move on and let someone who can take over.  All the issues I am vocal about are directly related to the Well-Being of Animals.  If people want to fuck around in their responsibilities, do it someplace that isn't tasked with caring for non-human lives.

So, my video documentation from last Monday.

"San Francisco Bison Paddock - Ongoing Negligence By SF Rec & Park"

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fiSLaS0BGx8

Video expands on the overview of these photos, and other details of this on-going issue.

Don't be fooled by these brown sticks, intertwined with green patches.  This is dried out non-edible vegetation.

After making the first video, I had the opportunity to gather some information, which I detail in the video.  One of the things I note is that I was told the RecPark Supervisor for the area of the Bison Paddock is Keith Roberts.  I note that I'll be contacting him.  Well, after making that video, I thought that name sounded familiar, so I searched my emails and found that I had emailed this guy already, and never got a reply.

Hello Mr Roberts

As a concerned Richmond District Native and 59 yr Resident,  I have been monitoring the dry meadow situation at the Bison Paddock for many years.  With the exception of Spring 2020 the inconsistency of the landscape to provide lush vegetation for these grazing Animals has been an ongoing issue.  The meadows have been dried out for over a year.

I was referred to you by the Gardener to seek answers to these questions.

I am aware there is allegedly an issue with the irrigation and subsequently the sprinklers. Using Spring 2020 as the most recent starting point...

I saw the back meadow sprinklers on once a couple months ago...

When was the non-working issue identified? In front meadow?  In back meadow?

Has work started to fix the issue? When was that?  What is the eta for repairs to be finished?

What will be the plan for rejuvenating and promoting new growth once the repairs are done?

Thank you for your time. I look forward to your reply.

End Email

If anyone wants to contact this guy, his email is Keith.Roberts@sfgov.org

I also noted that I found out the Sprinkler can't be hooked up to the automatic system.

I mention the Zoo Keepers who take care of the Bison and thier efforts to supply supplemental food for them, since they have no Vegetation to Graze on.  Viewable in this screencap from the video that follows.

"San Francisco Golden Gate Park Bison..Rec Park Dept Continued Neglect Of Paddock Meadow 8.20.24"

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rGZ8krQ7V4U

In my opinion, this is an Animal Welfare issue that these Animals are being prevented from their natural grazing behavior.

The RecPark needs to fix this Sprinkler issue.  If the Sprinklers are working, they need to be on everyday.   Whether that's by timer, or manually.  If it's not raining, the damn Sprinklers need to be on. ... If the Sprinklers are not working,  they need to be fixed, once and for all.  Good Grief.  The RecPark seems to make sure all the other Sprinklers are working.

Additionally, the lack of continued grazing vegetation, has allowed for an abundance of non-edible plants to take over. The whole area needs to be mowed down, rototilled, cleared and replanted (at RecPark's cost), with proper edible vegetation.  They need to ask the Zoo's Animal Care Staff what that should be. This wouldn't have had to be done if they would have kept it watered, and whatever was growing there in Spring 2020 wouldn't have died off.  Note, 2020 was an isolated event.  They kept it lush and green since the Parks anniversary event was anticipated.  When Covid hit, they let it dry out.

Lastly, I'm not done with this by a longshot.  As stated above, I will be further investigating what I learned on site. I had already requested all documents related to the Bison Paddock Sprinklers and Maintenance.  They were released to me last week, but I haven't gotten a chance to review them close enough to investigate the information, but you can be sure, I will be investigating those discoveries as well.

SF Mayor, Zoo Director, and Society Board, Seek High-Tech Enclosure For Pandas While Orangutans Live On Concrete Mounds

Oh geez, where to pick-up the documentation.  To say I'm overwhelmed with Animal related issues is more than accurate.  I do a good job of shutting down and shutting out when this happens, but when I do that, it never fails, more happens and I fall further behind.  I wish I didn't have this need to document, but after sixteen years of being a voice for the voiceless, it's hard to stop.  That said, I would never stop completely.  I feel like I am the only member of the public who can accurately portray what is happening at Our Zoo and in Our Park.

I've previously expressed how even thinking about blogging affects me physically.  I'm one paragraph in, and already my ears are pulsating and my face is flush.  Contrary to what some think, this is not fun for me at all.  I have a life, and many other things to do, but I'm pulled into these issues, not because I'm obsessed, but because I'm empathetically passionate about there being decent and respectful treatment for non-human Beings.  I will never give up advocating for Animals, specifically the ones in my corner of the world.

This post was supposed to be the continuation and preamble to the Chronicle article dated September 18,  regarding the San Francisco Zoological Society Board's continued support of Zoo Director Tanya Peterson.  The news is not only disappointing to myself and Staff, but extremely disturbing that in light of all the Animal Cruelty and Mismanagement facts, presented by Staff in recent media efforts, and by myself continuously for over a decade in this blog, that this Absurdity is the outcome.

As noted in my opening paragraph, there's been more since that article eleven days ago.  The last several days has seen as many articles pop-up, not only from the Chronicle, but the SF Standard.  This gist of those offerings circle around the Mayor's Panda Fundraising Plan, specifically her attempt to solicit funding from Tech Giants, with the illusion? delusion? of a "smart" enclosure for the Pandas.  I have two thoughts on that...

1) Mayor Breed knows absolutely nothing about Our Zoo.  Talking about and actively chasing a high-tech enclosure, when Our Orangutans can't even get an enlarged enclosure, because the Needed netting "costs too much", is OBSCENE.

2) Hopefully London Breed loses the Election and that will put an end to this Disrespectful (to current Zoo Residents) Panda Plan.

For size reference to those familiar with ground level view of the former Otter enclosure, I have provided the above photo. It shows that the size of Otters, is slightly larger than the Island (concrete mound), of the Grotto's that are the Orangutans only topical space.  ... The photo below shows the approximate size of that topical space.  Note there are structures on that space.

Additionally, for a Zoo Director to enter into a venture of this granduer and for the managing entity of a Zoo, to support this Want over the Needs of the current Residents that live there is Disgusting.  I mean just down right downright Abhorable.  Shame on Zoo Director Tanya Peterson and the San Francisco Zoological Society Board.

Zoo Spends Over $1 Million On New Train & Tracks, While Orangutans Wait For New Enclosure.

Despite delusional claims made by Officials in the recent Chronicle article, I guess the San Francisco Zoological Society Board not only supports Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, but also how funds are constantly being used for Non-Animal Wants, instead of Animal Needs.  It sickens me that no one seems to comprehend, or maybe it's just sadly that no one cares, that the Zoo is an Animal Care Facility.  The Animals Needs, should be the priority, not Gardens, Art Installations and Train Tracks.

I've been making notes for my expanded post on the Board's support of Peterson.  Unfortunately, it's been days and I've gotten no where in forming a post, as there is too much to put forth, in regards to the outrageous position the Board has taken.  I suspect I will be making several posts, instead of one.

Despite an endless list of mismanagement fails during Peterson's sixteen years at the helm of Our Zoo, the Board refuses to request her resignation and choose a Competent and Qualified replacement (which there already is on Staff), two elements that Peterson lacks.

The obvious next installment in this series would be to tackle one of the topics of failure I noted in my last post.  In addition to the ones I did mention (Animal Welfare Offenses, Society Member Locked Donations, and Grounds/Maintenance Needs), there is also Animal Enclosure Upgrades, and Lack Of Fundraising.  While I work on the bullet points under those topics, I'm going to interrupt that flow and get right into the obscenity of the Train situation that's going on right now.

There is a long list of Needs at the Zoo, and my continuing to put the Orangutans at the top of the list, is not meant to slight any others.  It's just I will never forget the faces of our Ollie and Amoi, as they stared, day after day, down from their caged tube home, into the Chimpanzee yard, while having no enclosure of their own.  The Cruelty they experienced because of Zoo Director Tanya Peterson's lack of care, compassion and empathy, is so disturbing.  It makes my blood boil.

Peterson, chased Orangutans til she got them.  Had no enclosure for them.  Hoarded them in caged tubes for eight months straight, with no other place for them.  Cried poor at every turn to renovate even one of the Triple Grotto's for them.  Two years and finally, something was done, but not FOR them.  Sure they got access to the enclosure, but not one thing was done for them.  Instead of filling in the moat and netting the Grotto, giving them more space, and climbing enrichment, money was spent to add so much bullshit to the enclosure, just to avoid netting, which she claimed cost too much. ... And now, she's spending over a million dollars on the Train!!!  Out-fucking-rageous!!!

The million, plus all the money spent on Gardens and Art bullshit, the last six years, could have been spent to build the Orangutans the home they deserve.  Instead they languish on two tiny islands that they hate.  Peterson and the Board make me sick, and should be ashamed of themselves.  Sadly, they seem to have no shame.

So, the Train.  Over a year ago, a former high-paid minion of Peterson's, somehow finagled the purchase of a new Train Engine.  The Green Train, was dubbed "Cobby", in tribute to Our Beloved male Chimpanzee who had passed away.  Last month, I saw the Cobby Train out on the tracks by the Tropical Building.  There were also non-Zoo workers unloading tracks along that portion of the route.

Not long after that, someone messaged me and told me it cost $300,000!   I was shocked, and of course, my first thought was, what 300k could do for the Orangutans.  Cobby was very special to me, so it makes me uncomfortable to hate on the Green Train, but there is just something not right with spending that kind of money on something the Zoo doesn't need, when there are so many things it does need, that get vetoed by Peterson, who's broken record titled No Money continues to play.

A couple of weeks ago, the grass around Eagle Lake was ripped up, and as I walked towards Bears, it was obvious they were scoring out a new addition to the route for the train (seen in pink).

As I walked the old route, all the track was up, so that meant it was being replaced.  Further investigation revealed the reason for all this.  When they bought the Green Train, allegedly no one bothered to find out if it fit the current track.  It does not.  So there needs to be a completely new track laid that will accommodate both Engines.  Allegedly, the old tracks were the original laid and at some point would need replacing.  In my opinion, that didn't need to be now.  Even if the old tracks became an issue, running the Train should not take priority over Animal Needs.

This project should never have been green lit.  The Green Train should have never been bought.  The excessive Gardens, around the Orangutans, on the Carousel path, and the VIP entrance, should have never been built.  The new Art Installation across from Orangutans should have never been commissioned.  All the money spent on this non-Animal bullshit, could have built a new enclosure for the Orangutans, Animals who's Welfare should be Director Peterson's and the Society Board's primary concern.

The San Francisco Zoological Society Board and Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, do not care about the Zoo or the Animals that call it home.

The San Francisco Zoological Society Is UnFit and Ill-Equipped To Manage Our Zoo

While I prep for other weekend projects (non-animal upset related), I am making notes for an expanded post on the Society Board's decision to keep Director Tanya Peterson at the helm.

This decision is a complete disrespect to the Animal Residents and the Staff.

The Zoo is doomed, and it's very sad.

Not sure when I will allow my emotional, mental and physical state to be fully affected by reliving all the upset sixteen years of Peterson has caused the Zoo and it's Animal Residents, enough to write a more complete post about how disgusting and disturbing, allowing Peterson to keep sucking payroll while destroying Our Zoo will be, but I didn't want weeks to pass without anything more than what I posted yesterday.  So, here's a sneak peek at what my current outline is for the expanded post.

Along with notating the negligence of Officials to properly oversee Peterson's management, my main points will focus on listing some of the stand-out fails during Director Peterson's reign, that the Zoological Society Board evidently SUPPORTS:

KEEPING ORANGUTANS IN CAGED TUBES!!!

You had to know this cruelty would be at the top of my list.

As well as other Animal Welfare Offenses, Lack of Fundraising, Society Member Locked Donations, and Ground/Maintenance Needs, such as letting the outside of the Zoo remain in shambles for at least the last twenty years.

These listed topics are not the categorical extent of Peterson's mismanagement, just the ones that have so far come to mind, without letting myself get too hyped up with heavy thoughts.

If anyone has specific issues they want included, use the comment option to either add them yourself, or as a contact for me to add to my post (note not a comment).  Remember, Anonymous is always an option.

Zoological Society Retains Confidence In Zoo Director

I've said this before, I should never look for Zoo stuff at the end of the day.  In an effort to control my inner Peace, I already don't view email after 7p.  Will do likewise on future Twitter searches.

9p and I decided to see by chance if there was any recognition for our Ollie Orangutan's Birthday today.  Admittedly, it's been a busy week and I forgot to look at my Calendar for September Birthdays.  I was reminded by a friend who sent me the Orangutan SSP's post.  The Zoo has been lax in Birthday wishes, and even if there's a celebration, allegedly Director Peterson has veto'd any posting about such to Social Media. .. So, there was nothing, at least not from the Zoo about Ollie.

Unfortunately, for me at this hour, when I planned to settle in and start a movie, there was this...

https://www.sfchronicle.com/climate/article/zoo-ceo-19592394.php

You all know there was an onslaught of all the Zoo Bullshit swirling in my mind.  Along with the disgust of the whole situation.  That said, I can't spend eight hours writing all my thoughts and full feelings about this.   Maybe not even in the coming days.  I got other things to do.  That said, *here is my initial offering, which I immediately posted to Twitter, @ the Chronicle, Zoo and RecPark.

*No Surprise!!! The Zoological Society, along with the SF Recreation and Park Dept, has been negligent in their responsibilities in every way to the management of the Zoo, to the Detriment of the Animal Residents (Ask the Orangutans), and the Zoo thriving optimally. All the claims by Officials & Director Peterson are delusional. I have well documented Tanya Peterson's mismanagement & fails, that have left our San Francisco Zoo in a dire position.

I knew nothing would come of this.  You know my main concern is for the Animals, but I also know the struggle so many on Staff go through, having to deal with Director Peterson, and how her mismanagement affects every aspect of their jobs.  I know alot of the Staff was hoping the new Board Chair, Melinda Dunn, might be some sort of savior.  To that I said, I don't think she will.  Dunn has been on the Board for years, and like the rest, she took no interest in overseeing how Peterson was managing the Zoo.  The Society Board has no interest in the Zoo unless there's a cocktail party attached to it.  Even then it's seemingly straight to the party, by-passing all the issues that line the yellow brick road to the bar.  It's sad.

So yeah, the investigation was a joke.  I knew it would be. More importantly, a seemingly huge waste of money.  Five Months of Lawyers fees.  Did that come out of the Animal Care fund?

Attn: Zoological Society Board, ... Why Did You, ...?

I'm laying here scrolling Twitter reactions to last nights debate.  Preping myself for a nap before I try to sort information sent to me by a Supervisor and a Board of Supervisors Staffer, and not only respond to, investigate and document in this blog, but also get to issues I want to present to the RecPark Commission.  All of it weights that have been piling up since before last months Meeting, that I didn't have the energy to tackle in time for.

A quote from a Tweet:

"Kamala Harris's beatdown of Trump at the debate: "She kept looking at him the whole time like, 'Are you okay?'... He would not look at her... It was a total power play on him."

This reminded me the time I stood up at a Joint Zoo Committee Meeting not long after my crusade to Save Our SFZoo Chimpanzees from being kicked out of their near fifty year home at Our San Francisco Zoo, by Zoo Director Tanya Peterson.  As I addressed Peterson, looking straight at her, she refused to not only, not respond to my questions, but she refused to look at me, instead staring down with her face inches away from the table.

Though I was not pulling a power play, I was simply asking someone to be responsible for their words and actions.  I was essentially presenting an adult conversation, which Director Peterson has too many times proven she does not have the ability to participate in.

Being reminded of that moment, also brought the vision of the scene.  The Joint Zoo Panel (made up of three RecPark Commissioners, three Zoological Society Board Members, a non-Zoo Vet, and an Animal Welfare representative), were all seated at the same table.  Each member of that panel, tasked with the responsibility of being a checks and balances to what goes on at the Zoo under Tanya Peterson's management.  Each one of them sat in silence, and I guarantee never discussed the issues I brought up.

I bring this up now, as all the weights that I mentioned, that I have to sort through, are related to the current situation, which is bringing Pandas here, and building them a new home, when the Orangutans have been here five years and never got a new home.

I ask each member of the San Francisco Zoological Society Board, ...

Why did you allow Director Peterson to acquire Orangutans, when there was no appropriate home for them?

Why did you allow the Orangutans to live exclusively in cage tubes for eight months?

Do you even know what I'm talking about?

And for that matter I ask the same to each  RecPark Commissioner, as well RecPark General Manager Phil Ginsburg, who along with the Zoological Society Board, are tasked with overseeing and managing the Zoo respectively.

Shame on all of you, for your negligence during the past sixteen years that I've been monitoring things.

Shame on Commissioner Larry Mazolla for his shock of Staff allegations, when his own negligence is to blame.

Shame on Society Board Chair Melinda Dunn, who needed to hire an investigation firm to look into Staff allegations, when her own Board Member position (prior to becoming Chair) negligence is to blame for allowing Peterson to mismanage Our Zoo into the ground.

The Zoological Society and RecPark's negligence in overseeing Zoo management, is what should be investigated.  Unfortunately, they all think they are doing a bang-up job, and that will never happen.

Confirmed - Botanical Gardens Coyote Murder Included A Pup! - Non SFZoo

I last posted about the Coyote Murders in the Botanical Gardens, two weeks ago.

While I did not go into specifics in the post above, I will now say, what I had read was that a Pup was allegedly among those murdered in that Coyote Family.  That has now been confirmed via official documents.

I have requested documents from California Department of Fish and Wildlife, San Francisco Recreation and Park, and San Francisco Animal Care and Control.  My request was not as timely as it should have been, so I am referring to documents received and posted by a longtime follower of the Coyotes in our Parks.  She requested documents immediately from USDA Wildlife Services, which I had not, as I was led to believe CDFW were the main agency involved.

Reporting on something second hand is usually not what I do, but my connection to our local Wildlife and Parks, deeply resonates with me personally.  Documenting wrong doings is what I do, and in my opinion, this is a huge wrong doing.

Documents received by Janet Kessler and posted to her website, Coyote Yipps, reveal and confirm, the Heartbreak, the Horror and the Lies.

https://coyoteyipps.com/2024/09/07/botanical-garden-slaughter-update/

I documented my correspondence to all official agencies, RecPark, CDFW, USDA Wildlife, and SFACC, in the post at this link:

iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2024/07/additional-curiosities-regarding.html

Also included in this past post is the curious statements made by RecPark and CDFW, to media.

In my initial inquiry to all, including RecPark, I asked:

*How many Dens? , was one of my questions.  I additionally asked and would like to know, *If the three killed were Adults? ,  and *What the Genders were?  As well, *What if any, assessment of Dens was done to determine if any Pups were left without one or both parents, after the kills? ... Also, *Why tranquilizers were not used?

The only reply came from RecPark:

Hi Kim, I don't have detailed information on the animals who were euthanized--only that there were three, and that an adult male was linked to the bite via DNA. This operation was conducted by USDA and California Fish and Wildlife.  The only den we were aware of was behind a fence and away from where the incident happened (and inaccessible to the children). We have not received any reports or sightings of orphaned pups. ... Tamara Barak Aparton, Deputy Director, Communications and Public Affairs"

In that post, I also quote from the article:

"None of the slain coyotes were rearing pups at the time of the attack, meaning the coyote likely acted out of aggression and was not protecting its young, said Patrick Foy, a captain in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s law enforcement division."

Flat-out LIES!

The continuous mention of "Pup" in the text messages (above from the USDA documents), between what seems to be the Kill Team, made me Sick and Furious to read.  They KNEW.  They knew when they saw it, it was a Pup.  They knew when they shot it, it was a Pup. They knew when they lied, there were Pups present.  So, Disturbing.

All the Officials involved knew they had shot four Coyotes (including one wounded and carelessly left for dead to suffer), not three, and they knew one was a Pup.  They knew at that moment, there was active denning going on.  They knew this was a family protecting its young.  They knew all of it, and lied.  Their statements to the press were crafted to suit the narrative they wanted out there, regardless of the truth.

In my opinion their lies are to cover-up their Barbaric Murdering Protocol.
