The SF Standard published this article on Thursday.

This is my fifth post this weekend, and up til a few minutes ago, this post was farther down the draft list. I thought this one would flow into the next one better. As well it's shorter, so why not bat it out. The post that was supposed to be next, will hopefully still be done today, as it's got a timeline attached to it. It's aimed at Mayor Breed over-riding the Zoo and stopping the Panda Plan before she leaves office, which happens in exactly one month. I may also, still follow through with supplementing that post with a Petition, for extra awareness.
The plans put forth in this article show the use of a different Big Cat Yard than I had heard was being considered. I wrote a *post Nov 11 that detailed what I knew to date. I'll link it at the bottom. The Yard now confirmed to be used, is in part (it's since been expanded) the same Yard I saw Pandas occupying in the 80s.
Other than the change in Yards, the plan seems much the same, with the addition of "visitor walkways." Where they plan to put those is curious, and with their track record for design, will probably look out of place. Other than that the design looks nice, even though filling in the moat, is still a concern for the future use of the enclosure, when the Pandas are no longer here. It will not be able to house any Cat species with ground that is flush with a viewing barrier.
In another **post last month, I wrote...
If Tanya Peterson wants to do the Zoo a solid after all the damage she's done, she should concede to the reality of what having Pandas will cost the Zoo, not just financially, but in regrouping after her reign. If Peterson ever cared about the Zoo, she needs to consider the Zoo's Needs, over her Wants, and LEAVE the Zoo with that money she raised, so the next Director can use it to fix the Zoo. Then, maybe Pandas can be a welcomed addition to the Zoo for it's 100th Anniversary in 2029.
I still think that would be the decent thing for Director Peterson to do, but we all know decent is not part of Tanya Peterson's style.
This article clearly sends the message that neither Director Peterson, the Zoological Society Board, or the RecPark Commissioners care what bringing Pandas here at this moment in time will do to the Zoo and it's thriving into the future.
With all that's happened this year, they aren't stopping. The selfish, narcissistic train just keeps on rolling.
I sure hope I'm wrong in thinking the Zoo's current and future Needs will sink under the financial weight of the Pandas. I don't think the Zoo will be able to afford to keep Pandas past the first year. They are all thinking that the rise in attendance is going to pay for the Pandas, and that may be, but that won't last. And while the additional funds go to Pandas, the other Animals will have to continue to forgo their Needs.
That all said. I wish as much thought and care went into building the Orangutans an appropriate home, as has for the Pandas. If the Pandas do end up moving in, I'm sure they will enjoy it.
San Francisco Zoo CEO Tanya Peterson says the design "will be a win-win for everybody, including the animals.
Unless I see the Orangutans getting a netted enclosure and a dayroom, the Animals Peterson is referring to are only the Pandas.

I used to use (search) labels, but too often forget. I started noting "Hot Topic" in title, but fell lax on that. Now I'm just going to add labels, keywords, etc., here at the bottom with hashtags. Does it help in searches, who knows.
