Happy 9th Birthday Salsa!

> March 14, 2014 - Well, lookie here, either the Zoo read it on my blog or went by the FB post by my friend Paddy (after I told her of the stupidity), but they have now changed the information to Pike.  Of course without apologizing and noting their "mistake".   No surprise there.  Its one thing to make a mistake and an entirely different thing to not admit to it.  Says alot about the kind of morals some Staff at the Zoo have.

Some might ask, why am I picking on this?  Why does it matter?  It matters because these are people who are lucky enough to have jobs at a place where they can be surrounded by these Wonderful Animals, yet they don't take the time to even know much about them, at the very least who they are as individuals.  Bottom line, too many people on staff at the Zoo, Just Don't Care.  I Care and I want the people there to Care.  TO DO BETTER.  The Animals deserve it, the Zoo deserves it.  To thrive at Optimum, not Mediocrity.

> March 13, 2014 - UG.  Looked at the Zoo's Facebook page and they posted this photo, which isn't even the right Animal mentioned in their post :P  ZooFoo's!  You ask what's a ZooFoo?  Its my own coin and is a combo/cross between Fools and a snafu!  .. This photo IS of Pike (Polar Bear)!  It always amazes me that the people who work at the Zoo, don't even know which Animal is which. Especially when you're job is posting photos.  There are only two Polar Bears, get it together people. I even herd one  of their photographers tell someone that Ulu was a "he"!  WTH!?!?!

 Happy 6th Birthday Mole!

Happy 6th Birthday Chalula!

> March 10, 2014 -  Seven Weeks of Trash!   This trash that I posted about on my other blog in the post about my Jan 21st visit, is still friggin' in the same spot! UNbelievable!  < Well it should be, but I guess nothing should surprise me, even something this simple.  The "grass" is growing up around it and new stuff has been added :(   I reported it to Security, and they alerted Janitors.  I've reported it twice more since. Major fail.  Glad the winds didn't kick it up (my original concern) and the plastic didn't blow into the Lake and harm any Waterfowl.

> March 4, 2014 - Mardi Gras Greetings from Salsa :)

RIP Wakoda - Navajo Churro Sheep Passes

Forever Loved
Forever Missed

My Beloved Barnyard Boyfriend
Giving me a Smile :)

As painful as this is, I have to finally do this Memorial post for my Precious Friend.  Its been too long, even though I think about him everyday.  The last time it was Monday the 29th, was in April, the day we lost Wakoda.  I can barely look at his photo without sobbing still to this day.    But, I have to honor him with a post, no matter how hard it is, it can't be put off any longer.   The pain will never go away, because I am haunted daily by his passing.  He SHOULD still be here.

I can not express in words how much this guy meant to me.  I loved him so much and I know he loved me.  I miss him dearly.  I miss his voice greeting me, even before seeing me.  He knew my voice and would call to me even if I was outside the barn still  :)   I miss our hug sessions!  He loved to be hugged!

RIP My Sweet Wakoda
I Love You My Precious Friend
You had a Wonderful, Gentle Soul
I was lucky to know you.

Eternal Wakoda Hugs
You are always in my heart  XO!

San Francisco Zoo Newsletter and continual PR FAIL

I have been silent as I grieve for the loss of my very dear Zoo Friend Wakoda.   This is not his memorial post, because I don't have it in me to do that yet.  In fact I didn't think I had it in me to do any posts at the time.   That was until I got the Zoo's monthly newsletter Animail via email minutes ago.  Can't even grieve in peace, the Zoo never fails to do something unconscionable.

The upper level Staff which includes the Public Relations Department continue to do and say things in poor taste.

Not long ago someone relayed a blurb in an internal Zoo email in regards to the future Bear Grotto plans.  There were a few notations that I had planned to post about in regards to this but hadn't gotten to yet.  That is for another time.  The part that struck me about what I was told was a quote from the Zoo's illustrious leader Director Tanya Peterson.  After sharing the future plans she added, "This was made possible by the passing of the Spectacled Bear."   Nice Tanya, Nice.   I'm sure Wishbone is looking down glad he was able to help you out by dying.  You're probably waiting for the Polars to die too before you do anything to get those animals off concrete.

Now my poor precious Wakoda, is being used so they can pat themselves on the back yet again, regardless that the poor guy just passed away.  They had time to put in a footnote, yet it was more important to proceed with their selfish boast than to post a photo of his face and a nice farewell, maybe adding in that they did acupuncture on him.   Nice going.  SFZoo always empathetic and compassionate.  Oh, and classy too.  NOT!

This is what they included.

Stay tuned for a proper tribute to Wakoda, when I can emotionally deal with doing one.   Til then with tears streaming I say RIP my Sweet Precious Friend.  I miss you so very much.  XO.

Wakoda says WHAT!? - Bring the Churro Girls Back Home!

Once again the San Francisco Zoo Management Team has made an Animal decision that is in their best interest, NOT that of the Animal.   This time the Animals being disrespected are the female Navajo Churro Sheep.  Sadly, this is not a surprise as they have disrespected many of the Animal Residents before, in many ways. To name a few:  They let Wishbone the Andean Bear pound his bones to a literal death living on concrete.  They let Elly the Black Rhino get a literal hole in her skin because it wasn't "feasible" for them to oil her.  They shuffled other Hoofstock around like they are playing pieces in a game:

SFZOO, do right by these girls and
like Wakoda says,
"Bring the Churro girls home!"

There are two issues to this situation.  The first is WHY and the other is LIE.

WHY move these girls?

The Navajo Churro Sheep live at the Family Farm in the Children's Zoo.  These five females have lived as a group there, with all their other Barnyard friends, for over four years.   Their daily routine consists of socializing with the other Sheep and Goats, as well as the Visitors, many of whom are regular visitors and fans of many individual Animals that live there, including the Churro girls.  Their social interactions are not only part of what they know, its part of their Enrichment.

Moving them to another area in the Zoo was an awful idea anyway you look at it.  They are not "exhibit" Animals, they are social Animals.  Their routine now exists of being penned up behind bars, not having social contact with their Animal or Human friends.  Not getting the exercise that panhandling for Petting Zoo Treats in the yard provides them.  Basically leading a boring existence unless one of the Keepers comes up to tend to them.

There aren't many people who visit them here.  The Zoo hasn't put up a sign at the area entrance that says what's back there (not everyone reads the map)   So they are without social stimulation most of the time.  This is one of many photos I've taken of them with their heads slumped on the ground.  They are bored!

Thankfully they know me and
will get up and come over to greet me.
I can provide them a break in their boredom.
Heartbreaking, as they seem
like they are saying "Free Us!"

In addition to it not being the life they have been used to, it may also being leading to a health detriment.  I visit them often and have noticed a difference in their mobility.  First I thought a couple of them were limping, which could be due to the different type of ground they are walking on.  A grassy "field" is much different that the Farm yard.  The uneven landscape is not what their used to.  The argument could be made that Sheep in general live on such ground, but these girls have not.  Also, being in a penned in area, where they aren't free roaming for treats, they are laying down most of the time.  When they get up, they are always hobbling a bit. I believe the stagnant sit is causing them stiffness.

Moving these girls was wrong.  Leaving them there beyond the two months that was initially (supposedly) planned is just cruel.  What is Wrong With You San Francisco Zoo Management?  Why do you continue to make decisions for Animals without Empathy?  Please let the Churro girls go back to the Farm NOW!

There has also been a change in the other Sheep,
who wonder what happened to the Churro girls.

Now for the second part of WHY and LIE.

The whole move was suspicious from the beginning.  Whoever made this decision above the Family Farm (Childrens Zoo)  Department, did so apparently (allegedly, whatever you want to call it) masked with untruths.  As I was told by several sources this move was supposed to be temporary, for only a couple months.  They wanted to have something in the area where the Reindeer had been over the holidays.  Now, word has it, they will be staying there until the new playground is finished.  AKA indefinitely.  There was also something about them being part of the new North American area.  Going by that, they may never get home, as who knows when the North American area will get done.  Frankly, a North American area shouldn't be done until other Animal needs Zoo-wide are taken care of, but hey, we are getting a new playground before that, so that there shows where priority lies at the SFZoo.  BUT I digress.

A note about the alleged "playground" reasoning.  The Zoo has created some natural play structures in this area as well.  There aren't many people who trek back to this area, but those who do and who have kids, the kids are more interested in playing on these structures, including taking sticks from the piles and beating the ground and tress, as well as taking these sticks into other areas of the Zoo and beating things.

Let's talk about this new map.   Regardless of the fact that the Zoo has spend money yet again on new maps (when I'm told there are boxes of unused ones in storage), here you can see that these maps have the Churro's as a listed exhibit.  In my opinion this shows that the Zoo Management knew very well the whole time that their plan was to keep the Churro's there past the time frame they originally presented.

Oh, AND if they are going to make the area inviting to people by having picnic tables and such, they need to put a garbage can up there, there is trash on the ground and most of it plastic bags all over the place.  I counted 7 pieces alone, the day I took this photo.

I saw Maintenance building more seating into this structure, so they continue to have plans that include having Animals on exhibit here indefinitely.  This appears to not be the temporary situation they presented.

San Francisco Zoo, STOP doing things to suit your own needs and whims.  Do what's right for the Animals. You seem to forget this is an Animal Facility.  It is because of these Animals that there is a Zoo, which also translates into the reason you all have jobs.  You talk about Wellness, take care of their Wellness and let them go home to the Farm.

New At The Zoo

I have posted within my various blogs my thoughts, observations and therfore suggestions in regards to things in NEED at the Zoo.   Some of those things actually come to fruition as I don't believe in coincidence and must assume that Zoo Staff in reading my posts moves forward and makes some changes.   That said, over the past week I have noticed some simple things that are in need at the Zoo.  So, I will use this post to both note the "New" and as a platform to suggest.

First, with the new Animal Births and Aquisitions, in addition to Animal Shuffles, there needs to be a sign at the entrance along with the "Today" sign, that says "New".

- New At The Zoo

*Greater Kudu Birth

*Yellow Back Dukier Birth - Congrats Lily and Erik!

*Wallaby Birth

*Aquisition of Wrinkled Hornbills  (Male on exhibit/Female in quarantine)
*Navajo Churro Sheep females moved from Family Farm to old Reindeer exhibit.

.....  In light of the Churro girls move, there needs to be a sign outside the Reindeer exhibit, noting that the girls are there.  Its ridiculous to take them out of the Farm in the first place, but to put them in an area with little foot traffic and not let Visitors know they are back there is awful for them.  These girls are used to alot of activity at the Farm and now they just sit there bored with almost no Visitors in addition to no hands on contact which they usually get.   .... Let's hope this "holiday adventure" is temporary and they can go back home.

....  I've noted this before but it seems like it needs to be noted again.  The Lion House needs more signage in regard to noise.   "Shoosh" signs at both entrances AND what would be the most effective is painting above the caging some words like "Quiet in the House".    There is what looks like at least four feet of space, so large letters would be very eye catching.  All areas within the Zoo where the Animals live should be Quiet Zones, but now with the possible pregnancy of the female Sumatran Tiger, keeping the Lion House a Quiet Zone should be a priority

RIP Corona - Navajo Churro Sheep Passes

Forever Loved
Forever Missed

Sadly we have lost another Zoo Friend.
Lovely Lady Corona passed yesterday morning.
RIP  Sweet Precious Girl XO!

At age 16, Corona was the Grand Dame
of the Navajo Churro Sheep Family.
She held court in the Yellow Barn
and even while plagued with arthritis
she gracefully let children pet and brush her.
She was an elegant lady.

Sunday March 25, 2012 - Happy Birthday Wakoda!

Today was my barnyard boyfriend Wakoda's 11th Birthday!

I went to the Zoo today just for Wakoda's Birthday :)  I love this guy!  It was supposed to rain, but regardless I would have been there to wish my sweet friend a Happy Birthday!  Lee and I sang Happy Birthday to him :)  I gave him tons of hugs and some treats!   Then, lucky for all, me being there (with my party hat on!) reminded his keeper Tracy (thank you!) that it was his bday and she had the volunteers make Wakoda a cake :) and we all sang Happy Birthday to him!  Wakoda loved his cake and his hugs :)  Glad I could be there to help celebrate and make your day special my sweet friend!  XO!
