Lifting Some Weights On This Last Eve of 2020

Yesterday I had the thought to write a year end post.  Not really about what's happened at the Zoo this year, but more about my feelings and where I am with blogging. 

I had planned to once again get to all my posts in draft done by now, at least a few before this one, but that didn't happen.  It will happen soon, I can feel it!  But, if we have another year like this one, that soon may not be til 2022!

I didn't make notes on this, so I'm just writing what flows out.  2020 was, to say the least, challenging for most of us, in different ways.  While my most cherished out of the house activity, going to the Zoo, was taken away for too long, even being back there, was not without frustration. Thankfully there are the Zoo Friends.  I think one of the biggest issues, was not about what's happening, or not happening on the grounds, but the lack of ambition there, that seems to be the only way I can describe the months of missed opportunities for fundraising and outreach, to not come out of the place.  There are those that still think I'm the enemy of the Zoo, when in actuality, I'm probably one, if not the only person who has constantly had bettering the Zoo, on my mind daily for over eleven years.  I continually added ideas, most that would raise funds, to my notebook during the first shutdown, wondering why the Zoo wasn't doing anything.  It's frustrating, especially when you can literally feel the gain and not just financially from these ideas.  The Zoo continually cries poor, so why aren't there things being done?  There should be creative ideas coming out of the place. The top seven salaries at the Zoo amount to over a Million Dollars.   At the very least, Why aren't those seven people coming up with ideas?  

So before attempting to think about this post, I thought I should sort out all my thoughts from the last year. I'm a list maker by nature, so I make notes constantly.  I use the Facebook Messenger as my portal, then I transfer them to a notepad document and sort into subject.  It's very time consuming, and after fourteen hours yesterday, I'm still not done and losing patience.  For those (yes there are some!) who think I live and breathe to write "bad stuff" (actual quote!)  about the Zoo, I don't.  This is not fun for me.  I continue to put myself through the upset of it, because I feel strongly that things need to be documented.  So here I am in hour seventeen, and I just paused sorting, as my mind went to this post, and if I didn't go with it, it might not get done today.

Part of what prompted this post, was this literal time and place in what's happened at our SFZoo, or rather what has not happened.   

A few weeks ago, I came across this photo from one of my blog posts and I thought, disgraceful that the Orangutans are still in the same place as they were exactly a year ago.  There is NO excuse.

I have had an Orangutan update to do since the first shutdown re-opening, so I wasn't going to add more to my load by writing another to complain about the Orangutans situation.  Then it happened.  It's like they can't help themselves.  The Zoo uses Amoi in a Holiday "ad" and outrageously uses words that refer to "home", when the Orangutans still don't even have a HOME of their own.  I would say, How dare they, as that's what I thought, but in all seriousness, how do they think that's ok?  Do they think that no one notices that the Orangutans don't have a home?

I want to note two things from this year, in reference to what the Zoo obviously thinks is ok.  Someone sent me something during the first shutdown, that I wasn't going to use even though I found it just awful.  Then, in the wake of the Maki kidnapping, awful happened again, and I was going to use that in a post, and then, per usual, I got behind, and then adding another post about about another awful thing just bogged me down.

So, this was the first thing. As I said, sent to me, someone pulled from Director Peterson's Twitter account.  Wasn't going to do anything with it, but considering the shame of the Orangutans still not having a home, it's appropriate.

There is nothing " norm" about not providing a designated home for Beings in your care.

Considering that the Orangutans were brought here over a year and a half ago, and that the only outdoor access the male had for eight months was the Skytrail, this is disturbing.  This is mocking the situation.  I get the distancing gag, but to use a shameful housing situation you created in a comical way is really bad.

It's a possibility I will be retaliated against for my opinion in regard to posting this.  It wouldn't be right and it wouldn't be legal, but its happened before.  ...  One should expect, if something is public, there will be opinions.  Voicing them is not a crime, it's in fact a right in this Country.  I'm not forcing my opinion on anyone, just saying how this and other things I write about make me feel.  Not only that, in general if someone says or does something, that reflects them, not what others opinion of it is.  So if they're confident with it, it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks.  Lastly, I talk to alot of people, Friends who are Members, Staff, non-Zoo invested people,  I get other people's opinions on things I have issue with.  I'm not alone with how these things, and everything I write about, makes me feel.  

The second thing, was this.  

I get that its a fundraising thing, but I think it's in very poor taste to use Maki's traumatic experience in this way.  They aren't creative enough to come up with other ideas, so they pimp out this poor guy's kidnapping?  I can't even with this lack of conscience.

Additionally, I was under the impression that the Madagascar project was fully funded by the Board Member who wanted it.  Allegedly, Seven Million Dollars was donated and considering the long list of other things that the Zoo Animals NEED ahead of this vanity project, not a penny more should be spent.  I'm not unreasonable, and I understand, plans and costs are fluid, but then you have to make the decision to rework them to fit the budget.  Not ask for more money, for an already extravagant WANT Not NEED. 

Note that I'm not against a Lemur expansion, although with our exhibit allegedly being the largest in a North American Zoo, I don't think its a necessity.  That said, I didn't even think expanding the Lemurs was part of the original plan.

I have several blog posts about the Madagascar project, dating back three years as of this coming February.  It actually encompasses most that I think is problematic at the Zoo.  I think the procrastination writing it is based in that.  There's just so much to say.  

In fact most of the posts are the same ones in the queue from the closing of last year.  2020 has basically been a wash.  Other than the Orangutans still not having their own home, not many huge new irritations, that aren't Pandemic related.  So wrapping things up isn't that upsetting, they are the same things I've been sitting on a year plus.  It's that they are still issues a year later.

So, while I didn't know what thoughts would flow as I wrote this post, turns out, I've been able to lift a few thought weights, which is much needed.  

Wishing (most) everyone a peaceful and safe New Year.  

Please do the simple things that will help us all see a less scary 2021.  

Cover your cake hole.

Don't get up in other's space.

Sanitize after touching shit out the house.

Lazy Media Drags Out The Zoo's Christmas Tragedy Again - Shame On ABC7/KGO

Will there ever be a year that Media doesn't have to re-publish articles from this tragic event?  Every year its the same thing.  I feel like there might have been one recent year it didn't happen, but it probably just didn't come into my view.  So, thirteen years later, this continues.  

As the day closed yesterday (Christmas), I thought about Tatiana, and was thankful her name was not dragged up against this year.  Unfortunately, I woke up this morning, and the first thing I read was a Google News alert, to an article published by ABC7/KGO, a re-post from their archives.  It bothered me on a couple counts, which you will read at the end, in my comment to them.  That is the reason for this post. 

For those of us close to the Zoo,  Tatiana has never been forgotten.  Not a Christmas goes by when most of us do not remember her and that tragic day.  In 2007,  I had not yet had the privilege of knowing all the Zoo Residents as individuals.  I had a Membership most of my adult life, visited a few times a month, and always on Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Christmas 2007 was no different.  I have written about this before, noting something that still haunts me.  If I had gone to the Zoo last in my route for the day, I would have been there later and most likely at the time the three perpetrators started their Animal Harassing, and maybe my vocal personality, would have prevented this tragedy.  Unfortunately, I was there two hours too early,  in front of Tigers at 2:48pm, the time stamped on my (the) last photo of Tatiana.

It was the cloud of judgmental and uneducated words that lead me to the mistake of reading online comments, that was the first advocating for the Zoo I had done.  Different than what my position is now,  I strongly sided in defense of the Zoo.  I stayed up all night sometimes, reading and replying to comments on sfgate articles, trying to share what I did know, a sort of damage control, as it hurt me that the masses were  so against a place I loved.  I made a button of my Tatiana photo with the words, Support The SFZoo!  I am still hurt by the comments I read, and still defend the Zoo in this situation.  While the Zoo assumed blame after being criticized in my opinion in error about the wall height, I did learn more afterward that does lend to alleged negligence dating back a many decades prior, that the Big Cat Grottos were not secure.  That said, I still would not feel unsafe standing in front of them as they were before the post tragedy renovation.  I believe and maybe some would say with delusion, that this event only happened because Tatiana was taunted into a frenzy by those three bullies with evil intention.

This is my comment to ABC7/KGO.  

> Every year the media seems to need to bring up this tragic event.  For some reason Tatiana is not allowed to Rest In Peace.  My main issue is not the sad feelings it evokes, but the continued vibe of villainizing Tatiana.  

In these re-hashes, follow-ups to the story are never included.  While not made public for five years, there was evidence that this was not a malicious attack on innocent visitors, but self-defense against those who were inflicting harm on her. Tatiana was defending threats to herself, her companion, and their home.  She and Tony were the innocents who were attacked.

Everyone close to the Zoo, knew the truth, but because Human lives are considered of higher value, all were quick to blame.  Blame her, blame the Zoo.  Not long after the lawsuits were settled, both of the surviving perpetrators were involved in other criminal activity.  They were and always will be the single reason for this tragedy.

In my opinion, repurposing old news stories, of tragedies is in bad taste.  That said, if media is uncreative to come up with new stories, the responsible thing to do is, to provide all the details.  It should be a full account.  

Don't be LAZY Journalists!

RIP Tatiana, You are not forgotten.  Maybe some year, a Christmas can go by without media parading out your tragic passing and corpse. <

Please Consider Helping The Chimpanzees At Wildlife Waystation Get To Their New Homes

I have followed the Wildlife Waystation for many years. I didn't know they were in trouble til news of their closing broke last Summer (2019). It seemed surreal that an established Sanctuary, in operation over forty years, would be closing.  That so many Animals the have called it home for so long, would need to find new homes.  My heart was breaking for them.  Sanctuaries are already at capacity limits, and most times, would require additional funding for habitat expansion to accommodate more residents.  This is exactly what has happened.  Over the last year, all the Animals have been re-homed, except the majority of the Chimpanzees.  There are now 32 Chimps, waiting to go to new homes.  These new homes have been identified at other Sanctuaries, but those facilities need funding to do builds to accommodate them.   

Everyone knows Chimpanzees are close to my heart.  I've visited our original three almost my whole life, and over the past tweleve years they have become an important part of my life.  

In 2013, a filmmaker from Australia contacted me after seeing a video on my YouTube channel of our male Cobby.  She inquired whether that could be the same Cobby she watched as a kid in a show called Cobby's Hobbies.  After many chats, she decided to make a Documentary featuring him. I contributed to the film in many ways.  One thing I had hoped was that I could locate the Chimp I watched as a kid on the show Lancelot Link, and that he could be a part of the film, the American counterpart to Cobby's that was shown exclusively in Australia.  

I was successful in locating "Lancelot Link", whose real name is Charlie "Chuckles".  Charlie was now living at the Wildlife Waystation.  I had already been following them and was happy to find him at a familiar place.  The folks there sent me photos and information about him, which I'm forever grateful.  When the filmmakers decided to come to California, I inquired if the Waystation owner would consider an interview for the Documentary.  I have read there has been some alleged controversy with the owner in relation to the Waystation closure, but her words in the Cobby movie are beautiful. I cried listening to her.  Thank you to Martine and Co. for the interview and for allowing a bit of Charlie in the film.

Because of my love for my Chimp Friends, for Charlie, who a friend adopted for me, (Thank you Joanne!), and for all the Chimpanzees I've come to know virtually, these 32 Chimps in need, are a worry for me.  I tear up just thinking about them and how their lives depend on public funding.  I made a video plea in an effort to help them.

I made this video at the end of October but per usual I didn't get it out promptly.  I hate that I take so long to follow through on things, but these Chimps have been waiting longer.

Current Zoo Shutdown - More Exemption BS!

This is basically a part-two to my previous post, where I expressed my thoughts and feelings about the Zoo Shutdown as of last Sunday, the last day it was open before closing.

So, then came Monday (Dec 7).  When I'm out I listen to talk radio, where I get my news during the day.  I had not read the full Shutdoor Orders, so I was extremely surprised and in a WTF spin, when I heard that Malls were allowed to be open.  Even though I was muttering about it all day, I still felt speechless.

I can't even with this.  There is clearly bias going on as to how businesses are categorized, and/or the exemptions allowed.  Money must be talking because how else is allowing inside Malls to be open, when the Zoo, an outdoor facility can't be.  

So, we can go to the Mall, in addition to the "essential" stores, like the Markets and Target, be inside, with no Distancing happening at all, yet we can't go to the Zoo.  Admittedly, and documented in this blog, the Zoo can do better with protocols, BUT that does not mean they are doing any less than others, and it is the safest place I go.  In stores, people are buzzing aout the aisles, almost up your ass, brushing against you as they pass by or reach over you.  It's risky behavior, but stores do not monitor the Distancing or the Mask wearing.  Yet an outdoor environment, where you can get away from people not complying, is off limits.  

By Wednesday, the State had bowed to the whining public, and announced that Playgrounds would be allowed to open.  WHAT?!!

How is this even possible?  First of all, Playgrounds seem like they would be petri dishes for a Pandemic.  Having hypersensitive good hygiene issues pre-Covid, my brain works in such a way that it follows what I call the path of contamination.  So, if a kid sneezes on a railing, then another kid comes up and touches it, then puts their hands in their mouth or up their nose, there you have possible contamination.  I'm not a Parent so maybe this is an ok comfort level that I just don't get.   

Out of everything, allowing Playgrounds to open seems to go against protocols put upon the Zoo in July, that required all the high touch points, to be covered or caustioned off.  Now it's a free for all at the Monkey Bars.    This seems outrageous and reckless.

That all said, in addition to the Animals, the Zoo is a Botanical Garden and it has a huge Playground, that even when the Zoo reopened, was not allowed to be open.  This makes no sense.

It would be one thing if the Health Department was basing its decision to close Zoos on Animal Welfare but they are obviously not concerned with Human to Animal Transmission.  If they were, the Great Ape Yard would have been a focal point for ReOpening protocol in July and it would have had signage, a protective barrier, and the path possibly closed.

FYI the barrier at Chimps that I have posted about, most recently in the post dated... has been redone.  Whoever built this new frame did a great job.  The choice of material is still a curious point.  The weird and sloppy first rendition had a mesh tarp folded, this one is one layer, so basically not a barrier of protection.  Don't get why clear sheeting isn't considered.

So what nonsense exemptions will the State allow this coming week? ... ??? What I do know is No Masker Jerks will still be allowed in the Park and elsewhere for their excercise.  Walking, Jogging, Biking, breathing out possible asymptomatic aerosol particles, with no repercussion, yet those of us who get our excercise at the Zoo have no where to go to be around nature, unless we want to go to Park and walk through the obstacle of aerosol Health Assault.  The State and City Governments need to crack down and start giving citations. If they had back in April when after a few weeks it was apparent self-entitiled shits weren't complying, we wouldn't be in this mess nine months later.  Big Fail.  

All this said, it will be outrageous if this Shutdown goes past three weeks.

Our Second Zoo Shutdown - Category BS!

I started writing this last Sunday after my Zoo visit.  Since then there's been other developements, so I'll post about that separately.

I had been out of the news loop for a couple days, when my neighbor texted me and asked if the Zoo would be open Sunday (12.6.20)  I said, I hadn't heard anything, and they are "outside".  I started networking a quiry and indeed within a short time, word came down that the Zoo would be closed starting Monday. 

Thankfully, unlike the first shutdown, I was able to get in a visit I knew would be my last for a month.  After going without seeing the Zoo Friends for four months, three weeks was sad, but not the level of upset it previously was.  The only thing I was bummed about was missing Nick's Birthday today and Twiggy's Birthday on the 23rd, and the Meerkat Triplets First Birthday. So I wished them Happy Birthday, and told all the Friends I'd see them in three weeks.  

I immediately questioned the Botanical Garden via both a Facebook Messenger and Twitter, whether they would be open.  Yes!  They responded.  Now the anger set in.   Anyone who followed my posts from the first shutdown, knows that I was outraged when the BG was allowed to ReOpen on June 1st, while the Zoo was still not allowed. Unless there was a documented concern for Animal Safety, there is no apparent difference between the two outdoor facilities.  In fact, the Zoo at least has more extensive protocols in place. 

I am not making a judgement on California Zoos, because I don't know if any conversation has transpired between them and the State.  Officials have continually stated that there would be a second wave, the possility of another Shutdown could happen.  That said, I'm curious why CA Zoos didn't band together and get Zoo's reclassified as Outdoor Museums (the category the Botanical Garden is in) ?

So, I'll leave this post with a share for those who haven't been to the Zoo recently.  There have been some nice decorations been put up over the last few weeks, that now won't be seen by Visitors through the Holidays.   A large wonderful Christmas Display in Entry Village that was done by the Horticulture Department Landscape Designer Patricio with the help of Lorraine from the Maintenance Dept.

Above is a short clip I did of it so people can at least see it.  It's sad that all this effort and possibly some funds, have gone to waste.  It would be nice if the Zoo could be allowed to at least let Members into Entry Village to see it and have a Holiday photo op.  Why can't there be small amount of people streaming through there, distanced, during special hours the week before Christmas?  People could be encouraged on Social Media to place online orders from the Gift Shop, and even Cafe, and then come to Zoo for pick-up.  They could have the pop-up Coffee Stand selling Hot Chocolate and other Holiday Beverages.  There would be no difference to doing something like this than there would be to Stores and Restaurants that are allowed to have take away services.   It's a thought, maybe the Zoo could seek approval for this.  It would be something for Members, and to garner a bit of revenue.  As well a perk for anyone buying a new Membership.

Keeper Jamie put out some Holiday Enrichment Decorations for the Mandrills and Atlas the Squirrel Monkey.  I got lucky and Banjo walked right into frame.  Happy Holidays!

Response To A Comment From An Anti-Masker

I usually don't get to comment replies this quick, but considering we are on the eve of another Zoo Shutdown, I thought that this comment that came in today would be appropriate to post and respond to at this time.   The irritations about many aspects of this Pandemic, especially why we are still in it, nine months later, have been circling my mind all day.  So let's get to it!

@Brenda -  Thank you for your comment.  As much as I enjoy a good debate, this is not a topic I'm going to engage again,  because I don't have the time, energy or more importantly, the need to. 

First, you didn't have to note that you were an Anti-Masker, because your words showed your lack of respect for rules, orders and the health of others.  They illustrated that you are in the category that has given the middle finger to the Pandemic, and you and your like, are more than probably to blame for this situation continuing, for what will soon be a year.

You certainly have the right to do as you want, but that does not make it the right thing.  And while you can do whatever you want outside the Zoo, in the Zoo there are rules that need to be followed.

The Zoo is a controlled environment.  The rules for being on the grounds, as a Visitor or Employee were set in accordance with the City Health Department.  These rules allowed the Zoo to ReOpen.  If these rules were not in place, the Zoo could not have ReOpened.  If the rules are not being followed, the Zoo would have had to close again.  As a Visitor one must agree to follow the rules.  Not following the rules while at the Zoo risks closure, which causes lack of revenue and puts the needs of the Animals in jeopardy.

You started by noting that I called out an Employee for not wearing a Mask.  You are damn right I did.  Employees are not above the rules, and they set the example for Visitors. 

In response to my issue with people being unmasked in areas common with masked, and to wear appropriate masks, you called me Entitled.  It is not Entitled to expect rules to be followed, so everyone is safer.  This isn't just about me, contrary to your position as someone who is anti-mask. 

  

That all said, I am Entitled.  Myself and anyone else who wants to stay safe and is following the rules put forth by establishments we enter, and recommendations by health professionals, WE ARE ENTITLED to have the air in our space be as free of unhealthy toxins as possible, especially in a Pandemic when those toxins have proven to be deadly.

Maybe your wish for Christmas should be that no one you care about gets Covid.  

And yes, I am a piece of work.  I am confident,  I am opinionated, I am outspoken, and I don't bow to bullshit.  Thank you for the compliment.

Words Of A Politician and A Filmmaker - Why I Write This Blog

I wrote a completely new post a couple weeks ago.  Some recent things moved me and I thought my feelings would be a good lead-in to many of the posts I have in draft.  Time got away from me, and the outside world got to me.  So, Peace has been the priority, and even though the need to do so is constantly on my mind, opening up the blog has not been.

So many failed attempts to catch-up with blog posts.  Sometimes it seems I may never catch-up, because every week there seems to be more things to write about.  It's very frustrating, but more so, disconcerting.  It makes me sad. 

I want everyone to know, regardless of how long it takes me, how far behind I get, I will never stop being a voice for the Animals.  I will always watch, I will always question, I will always be vocal in an effort to right wrongs. 

Last Friday, while I watched the Victory Celebration after the Election winner was called, I felt a bit of ambition.  President Elect Joe Biden spoke of making a Better America.  The words that formed his sentiment resonated with me, as every thought I have, every post I write, the truth, the awareness, is all in hope that it will lend to making, a Better Zoo.

The other night I watched an interview with Robby Benson.  When I was a teenager, Robby was mostly known as an Actor.  I spent the summer of '79, on the set of his movie Die Laughing that was filmed here in the City.  Ironically, one of the first locations was behind the Zoo, in a large vacant sand dune area, where the scene of a Circus was set-up.  That experience became a foundation of a big part of my younger life.

In 2008 I finished working on a book about my teenage adventures. I have never done anything with it, as it coincided with a personal tragedy and I never got back to it.  Then, when I might have been able to work on publishing it, my mind was other places.  The last ten years have been spent watching, worrying and writing about the Zoo.  Not really what I wanted (or want) to do, but what has been presented to me at this point in life.

Ok, back to the reason I brought up Robby Benson.  Since the 70s he has taken on every aspect of filmmaking.  Watching his interview, he really has become a master of his craft. He spoke in regard to being directed and what he's learned.  "As a Director you shouldn't feel threatened when someone has an idea, ideas are great!  Even if its wrong, you can harness that idea and take that energy and aim it in a different direction and then even more ideas start to come."

His words related to many things that I've experienced during my twelve years of being immersed in the Zoo.  Initially I relayed ideas to the Director via what I mistakenly took as a welcomed email correspondence.  A Keeper at the time (2009) warned me to be careful, "She doesn't like other people's ideas."  I responded, curious why someone would be adverse to suggestions.  There has been several people over the years that have said the same thing to me, as Robby did about working with Film Directors. 

Much like our President Elect said in that November 7th speech about our Country, there are alot of things that need fixing at our Zoo. We have had twelve years of not so great things happen.  You only need to scan through the archives of this blog to see that.  Something needs to give for the Zoo to thrive in the right direction.  I continue to hope that my documentation for awareness, idea suggestions, and words of truth will be a source of that happening.

Safety Update - Why Was The Covid Safety Sign At Great Apes Taken Down?

One of the posts I have in draft is an expanded version of this, an update to safety issues I had.  For the purpose of Chimpanzee and Orangutan Safety,  I'm fast tracking this, as the next couple months might put them and the rest of us in the most vulnerable position.

Yesterday Mayor Breed announced that San Francisco was now at the purple level, the highest in Covid ranking.  While the City initially patted themselves on the back for a job well done by Residents, as that's what the numbers reflected, I was surprised because I don't see good behavior from the majority of people.  From what I've witnessed, the masses are mostly made up of self-entitled No Maskers who have kept this Pandemic in motion.  I am not surprised at all, that we are in the position we are.  With this in mind, and the probable middle finger given to gathering and traveling over the Holidays, this weekend through January in my opinion should be the time that those who do the right thing because they want to stay safe,  need to really ramp up your self protection.  Double Mask, please do not rely on a cloth mask, bandanna or gaiter to protect you.  Wear an N95 or surgical mask under your cloth covering, or add a filter.  Make sure you are handling your mask properly and washing cloth covering after each use.  Stay Safe people!

Ok, now for my Zoo related issues.  There are two.  One is Animal Safety and one is Visitor Safety.  

In my posts dated, August 11th (2) and 14th (1),  I wrote about my concerns for the barrier area around the Chimpanzee yard.  I was concerned when first news of Covid was out in March and the Zoo was still open.  Then the Zoo closed, and word was that path around the yard was closed to even unauthorized Zoo Staff.  I expected it to be closed when the Zoo ReOpened, and was surprised and upset that it wasn't.  After seeing visitors continually taking off their masks or not wearing properly, I waited to see if there would be any additions to safety in that area, after three weeks of none, I spoke with the person who has since allegedly been bumped to " Head of Safety".  I expressed two things.  One was that this was even happening considering the fact that there were portions of the perimeter where visitors are less than six feet from a Chimpanzee or Orangutan sitting at fencing. 

An effort was made to eliminate that issue, but frankly I found it ridiculous.  You can see their solution in the earlier blog posts mentioned.  Second, I suggested signs at both ends of the path, that noted that Chimpanzees and Orangutans are vulnerable to Covid just like Humans.

Since people are breathing on the Animals, as the minutes pass, I expected this simple and logical deterrent to be done by the next time I visited three days later, if not that day.  It was not.  The following week, I was happy to see signs, though not at the path entrances.  Signs saying similar were put up by the Keepers at the barrier fencing in two different places.  I thank them for taking the initiative, since Management didn't see it as a priority.  Curiously those signs went missing the following week.  Allegedly no one in Animal Staff removed them, so I ask Management, Why would you remove those signs?

To me it would seem that keeping the Animals as safe as possible from visitor mis-behavior would be a priority.  It often hasn't in the past, but during a health crisis, one would hope things would be different.  Unfortunately they are not.  So, I ask Management. Why would you not want to keep the Animals, especially the Apes at this vulnerable enclosure, as safe as possible?

Since the ReOpening July 13, the stream of people removing their mask for no reason, for eating and drinking, wearing it Pinocchio style, has been steady, Zoo-wide, but especially at this concerned area where the Great Ape yard is.  Members of the Public should not have to constantly call the ER line to report this.  Keepers should not have to, yet I hear their calls go out over the radio.  Management needs to do more to protect all the Animals, but again, especially these vulnerable Ape species that can just as easily contract the Covid virus as Humans.  Do more!  Do better!

The other thing that is in my opinion a big problem is the eating and drinking situation.  I wrote about this upset before, and I'm not the only one who has an issue with it.  First, people should not be able to eat and drink unmasked while walking around.  Staff says its not allowed, yet there is no signage that says otherwise and it's a constant sighting.  I understand needing to take a drink of water for hydration purposes, but even then, people should be instructed to at least move away from people and not facing others.  People now are just walking talking, drinking, eating, blowing possibly asymptomatic particles into the air.  I'm sorry, don't mean to sound nit picky, but I personally don't like walking into someone elses aerosol stream.  This also applies to those breathing on the Apes.  One woman recently was actually blowing them kisses unmasked.  

In addition to the walking about unmasked to stuff their cake holes, that whole area along the path of the cafe and other points in the Zoo with random tables, again, should not be allowed.  Just walking through there with people unmasked on both sides, facing out to path of people, feels like contamination alley.  Alot of the time people aren't even eating, just talking with others or on their phone.  In my original post about this, I made the suggestion in a blog post of having a designated dining area away from other visitors.  I suggested the area used by the Depot, which is the perfect location.  That area has remained unused. There is also another area that is unused.  I ask Management, Why is having a designated area not a viable option for those who are taking their masks off to eat and drink?  Contain them, so the people who keep their masks on and are trying to stay safe can walk the paths without being health assaulted.

Another suggestion, since people can't seem to follow rules, and are given too many warnings to do so, Rules should be posted and called attention to at check-in window.  Visitors agree to them at check-in and when they aren't following, out they go.  ... These are rules I'd like to see.

*Masks required at all times.  

*Eating only in Designated dining areas.  

*No walking and eating or drinking. Removal for quick drink, and away from other visitors.

*Maintain Distancing from other visitors. (Which no one does.)

So yea, in addition to the upset by the self-entitled No Maskers outside the Zoo, we got plenty inside.  It's so rude and disrespectful that people can't even follow rules and have any sense of right, at the very least in a controlled environment.  That said, the Zoo needs to do more to control these mis-behaviors, by posting signs at Apes and making designating dining areas. The check-in agreement is a good idea.  I have confirmed that there are other Zoos doing this.

We are over four months into this, the issues should have been identified and fine-tuned by now.  Instead in my opinion things have gotten lax.  I rarely see Security patrolling, unless they are called.  And calling the ER line still often goes to voicemail.  

This all said, the Zoo, is not any more unsafe for visitors than the Park, or other outdoor spaces.  Certainly more safe than any store, but that does not mean that things can't be safer for all.   Especially the Chimpanzees and Orangutans, who don't know there is a Pandemic and aren't wearing Masks.  Both species are smarter than Humans and if they did know, they would be Masked Up!

Maki - There's No Place Like Home!

I hadn't planned to write another post after Maki was safely home, but I thought I'd complete the series with the update that an arrest was made in Maki's kidnapping.  Most everyone should know by now, as it was a couple days ago.  Not many details have been released, I'm looking forward to hearing how this guy knew where to access the Lemur night quarters, if he had a connection at the Zoo, and what the motive was.  

I'm glad that I was online Thursday evening and following Maki's rescue and return to his caregivers, family and home.  Learning the news as it was coming in and documenting it in real-time was exciting.  No better feeling than to report wonderful news!

Aside from the obvious joy and relief that Maki was found safe, little James Trinh who spotted Maki outside his school, made me smile when he said, "Call The ZooKeeper!"  I'll never forget that line!

Praying Maki will recover from this traumatic experience with no lasting affects.  I was worried about Covid, and then hearing he was dehydrated, I worry about his Kidneys.   Seems like the kidnapper didn't give him any food or water.   My heart breaks for what he went through.

Last Bit Of Maki News For Tonight From ABC and NBC... Updated

Now that the News is doing a great job of reporting on Maki's return, I'll leave you all with that.  I'm sure there will be much more media attention to feed our souls with this wonderful close to an awful event.  You can check Twitter for stories, as "Maki" and "Daly City" are Trending in California!

It's been an emotional time and beyond thankful that Maki is safe and home.

I first read on ABC News that Maki was spotted by a five year old!  Bravo!  Thank you to little James Trinh and to his Dad for calling it in.  And to his Mom for the initial Tweet about Maki being found. This Family needs a free Membership!

Then NBC's Ian Cull took over on Twitter with first hand reports from the Family who spotted Maki.

"He says Maki wasn’t scared by the children, and was moving very slow. He was never threatening, and went calmly with animal control."

Glad that Keepers Lori and Kyle were there on scene with him. I'm sure Maki was happy to see them!  A great relief and ease of upset for everyone.

Some Details About How Maki The Lemur Was Found

Curiously, or maybe not, there has still not been an update from the Zoo that Maki has been found. ... Would have liked to have seen a semi-immediate post, something like, .. Maki has been Found!  No further details at this time, but Thank You for all the concern and good thoughts. ... I don't understand why it's been over three hours since the first Twitter post by a member of the public and the Zoo has not updated the worried public.  Disappointing.

Breaking News! - Maki Is Home!!! - Stolen Lemur Found Safe!

Crying tears of joy and relief!

As the sun set I thought, another night Maki not with his family.  Continued saying prayers and sending live his way.

I searched for news updates. None from Zoo or SFPD.  Then searched both on Twitter.  That was the ticket!

Saw this six minutes after it was posted.

No other details available at this time.

So happy!  He looks good. Hope he is found to be healthy and no lasting effects of this traumatic event.

Hoping they catch the Demon who took him.  Won't say anything further.  Those who know me know what I'm thinking.

Appeal To Whoever Stole Maki The Lemur - Read This!

I obviously don't know the motive behind this cruel crime, but I would bet the perpetrator does not know how to care for Lemurs.  I can only hope they care enough to keep him healthy and safe.

Was he taken to be a Pet?  To be sold into the Exotic Wildlife Trade?  Whatever the reason, caring for and feeding any Animal is an individual and delicate plan.  In Maki's case whoever has him, must know by now, he is of advanced age, which is even more concern that he is properly cared for.

Zoo's work close with Duke Lemur Center.  This page from their website refers to reasons why Lemurs do not make good Pets.  Below link I've copied some relevant text excerpts.

... Even providing a lemur with a proper daily diet is complicated. Owners occasionally contact us, already having purchased a pet lemur, with no idea what to feed it. In one case, the owners of a ring-tailed lemur named Milo were feeding him pizza and ice cream. In a reality television show filmed in eastern North Carolina, a lemur is shown eating a slice of bacon.

That pet lemurs tend to have serious nutritional problems from being fed inappropriate diets exacerbates the problem of limited access to qualified veterinary care. Unfortunately this can lead to privately-held pet lemurs developing a host of illnesses, including obesity and diabetes, and dying prematurely.

Praying For The Safe Return of Our Lemur Maki

I'm interrupting the flow of the sixteen posts I have in draft, to say a few things about the news out of the Zoo late yesterday.  It's national now, but this is the first article out yesterday.

I had not planned to write about this, as it is not the Mission of this blog, or my position to break sensitive news.

First thing yesterday, I saw Police on site.  Gathered near the Lemurs with Zoo Staff, I knew something was not right. ... I didn't know whether the Zoo was going to make a public statement about it, but since it has, I want to include it.

Once I knew what happened, I just felt incredible sadness.  This poor innocent Being, ripped from his home and family, into who knows what kind of situation.  Poor Maki must be so scared.  My heart breaks for him.  I worry for his family too, who probably wonder what happened to him, and themselves traumatized by an intruder. ... Then I felt so much anger for anyone who played a part in his disappearance.  For decades I have not been a fan of people, and that has grown increasingly over the years and has culminated during this time of Covid with the extreme level of self-entitled behavior I see everyday.  I'm sick of it.  

Why would someone do this?  Why don't people have empathy and think about how cruel an action like this is.  Immediate memories of when teenagers stole two Koalas in 2000, for their Girlfriends, and the disappearance of Banana Sam nine years ago, for reasons unknown.   For some reason this seems more sinister.  Maybe because of all the illegal Wildlife Trade that is in our face on social media everyday.  I hope I'm wrong and some kid realizes the danger he has put poor Maki in, and he is safely returned home. 

In addition to the question why, there's the how and the subsequent, who.  Unfortunately I always make the mistake of reading social media comments.  Far too many jokes about this on Twitter.  It really bothers me that people would think this is something to joke about.  Other comments included, "inside job".   * I don't know about that, or feel comfortable sharing my theory of possibility, but an obvious thought is that you have to look at anyone not on staff who has knowledge about how these Animals are housed. ...  I hope that the Zoo has decent camera coverage around the perimeter, as well as other key points and that the Police are accessing street cams.   I would think there has to be footage of trespassers gaining entrance to the Zoo.

There was also a comment blaming Keepers. I know these Keepers and they love the Animals in their care.  I know how I feel, and this has got to be beyond upsetting for them.  For anyone to suggest a Keeper would do this is, isn't thinking about why Keepers get into this profession.  Most Keepers, especially those working under stressful environments, like our Zoo is at times, only stay because of their love for their Animals.  

While I have just talked about Keepers, I want to suggest to the Zoo something that came to mind after reading the initial news article.  Staffer Jason Watters notes that in addition to Maki's advanced age, he needs a special diet.  I think it would be advantages to put out a statement of care, so until the person who took him comes to their senses and returns him, he can receive as close to decent care and diet as possible.  Consider doing a video, preferably made by a Keeper, talking about Maki, how much he means to them and his Lemur Family, noting do's and don'ts, including what not to feed him, and what could be found in our local markets that he can and should safely eat.  It could only do good in keeping him as well as possible until he gets back home. 

Hoping everyone who reads this sends good thoughts and prayers precious Maki's way, and that we hear good news soon.

Plea to whoever has him, please do the right thing and allow him to come back home to his caregivers and family.  Contact authorities and return him safely.   Thank you.

The Longest Night - Day Darkness at the Zoo - 9.9.20

The Day of Darkness was one of my reserved days.   As the morning went on, and no daylight appeared, I wasn't sure if the Zoo would even be open.   Glad it was.  It was pretty cool to be there for this possibly once in a lifetime event.  Unfortunate circumstances for this to occur, so hopefully Northern California never has wildfires this bad again, that would allow for a repeat performance. 

It had started to get a bit lighter about 9:30a, so when I arrived, it wasn't too dark, but just the heavy orange sky.  The dusk appearance made it felt like the old event, Member's Night.  I walked most of the grounds, to document how it looked and what the Animals were doing.  By 11a it started to get dark and by Noon it was like nighttime.  

The Animals looked a bit confused.  Of course I went to Chimps first, and for the first time I was able to see into the Dayroom from the path window with no glare!  They looked at me like, What are you doing here at night?  The Peccaries were the most curious.  All four lined up and stared at me, again like, What the heck?

These are my clips put together in three parts.  Some might be interesting, some might not.  A friend who watched part one, said it was, "Fascinating... eerie."

I left just after 1p and it looked like it was 9p.  Not much orange sky at that time, but nighttime darkness. ... By 2:30p there was a weird daylight breaking through.

While it was a cool experience, despite the reason for it, there were also a couple of odd feelings in certain places.  One in the moment and one in hindsight. While filming at Cats, the lighting appearance of sundown, brought on a quick snip of a vision of the events of Christmas 2007.  Sadness for Tatiana came over me, so I quickly stopped filming and moved on.  Then, while playing my files to put together the videos, when viewing from Peccaries to Wolves, I realized how isolated I was in the dark, at the far end of the Zoo. It reminded me of when a visitor entered the Grizzly Bear enclosure in  November 2009.  At the time, I was outraged that visitors were still allowed to roam the Zoo in the dark, two years after Tatiana.  This was before I started cranky blogging, and instead wrote emails to the Director.  This one asked if she was waiting for another tragedy, noting that visitors should not be allowed to be in the Zoo, around Animal enclosures, in the dark and that the Zoo should be closed earlier when the time changes to Standard Time.  Director Peterson proposed a Winter hour schedule at the next Joint Zoo Committee Meeting.  ... That all said, there I was, wandering about in the dark, not a staff member in sight.  In hindsight, I'm bothered the Animals were left vulnerable during this day darkness.  I would have liked to see someone posted at breachable enclosures.

Update on Mama Peahen and her Chicks - Their Sad and Unnecessary Fate

I wanted to do an update last weekend, but I didn't get to viewing a putting together all my video clips in time.  The clips include some nice footage of another Peahen and her Chicks, as well as the complete events that happened to the Mama Peahen and Chicks that are the subject of this upset.  Clips are of the joy when I first saw this Family, of them being booted from safety, and of Mama frantically trying to find a new safe place for her babies.

The last time Mama was spotted was Thursday September 10th.  She had only one babie left.  My heart breaks for her.  She didn't have to watch three of her babies die.

As of Wednesday September 16th, the Patas Enclosure was still empty.  That Family could have stayed safe in there and all the babies would still be alive.

This whole situation was irresponsible in the management of Animals in the San Francisco Zoo Collection.  The action was cruel and shameful.  Those in Zoo management responsible will surely not like these words, but as always, I'm just relaying the facts.  The action was theirs. 

I inquired to several other AZA Zoos with free roaming Peafowl, about their management protocol, as well as the AZA, about Peafowl Management guidelines.  I asked the general question without giving any details as to why I was asking, other than that I was doing research.  I didn't expect to get a reply from the AZA as they never respond to inquiries.   I did get replies from Zoos.  Only one followed through on providing information. 

I thought their response was top notch in detail as well in their protocol for Peafowl Management. 

> "Our peafowl are somewhat managed.  We will make fake eggs to limit how many hatch.  We will do nest checks and replace any fertile eggs with fakes.   When chicks do hatch there are several factors on if the peahen is permitted to free roam with the chicks.  Some factors would be if the hen has successfully raised chicks before, how many chicks, the color of the chicks and how many predators we believe are in the area.  If necessary we will pull the hen with the chicks and give them time to grow.  We have also raised some chicks ourselves if necessary 

Our peafowl are fed twice a day and they know where to come.  They get gamebird chow, cracked corn, greens, fresh fruit and veggies.  They also enjoy leftovers from our parrots and know where to beg for bugs and peanuts. 

We do have some "special" peafowl that are locked up every night or on very busy days for their safety.  This group is also protected from bad weather and given a heat source when it's very cold.  The other peafowl without any issues prefer to roost high in trees.  During bad weather they usually find a barn to hang out in and are fine.  Most of our peafowl are banded with different colors so we can identify them and know if one doesn't seem right. 

We recently had a peachick hatch with splayed legs.  We intervened and banded it's legs.  It's doing well and is with its mother." <

As you can see, much different than the way our poor Peafowl are treated. 

SFZoo does not protect Mother's and their Chicks, does not feed Peafowl, and does not provide them shelter.  Seemingly something needs to change with Peafowl management and in the Bird Dept.
