Revisiting The Perimeter Fence Saga - Thumbs DOWN & Thumbs UP

Well, this post is five weeks overdo.  Part of a series of eyes on the grounds notations.  Obviously my main focus is on the Animals, but there are other things that have irked me.  These things are mostly doable fixes that I think are important, as they show that the Zoo has Pride in itself.

I've written much about Perception.  I really believe little things (although this is major in my opinion), set a tone for visitor perception.  Considering the unfavorable climate surrounding Our Zoo since April 2024, things like this need immediate attention.  Our Zoo has been scrutinized and criticized, and is at a point in time where public perception is most crucial.  I want Our Zoo to be the best that it can be, and that includes looking the best that it can.

This Monday (July 6), has now marked week six since a panel of fencing broke loose from the crumbling pillar it was attached to.  Three weeks ago, it fell further and is now laying down against the chain link fence behind.  Maybe it too has finally had enough and is putting itself to rest.

This is certainly not the best it can look, and not only projects a bad image, but sends the message, that no one cares.

They should have incorporated it into the Dino event.  At least it would have been on theme.

This Perimeter Fence situation has been too long drawn out. So long that my last post about it was nine months ago, when I posted that I was done with talking about it for the time being. In September, I had documented the with new Zoo Leadership (change over as of August 1), there was progress on the grounds with a few things, one being a clean-up along the fence-line.  I also posted ideas about what to-do to make the perimeter fence and entry not look war-torn, with the fence crumbling, broken pillars, and continuous graffiti.  That post was sent to the then (now permanent) Interim CEO/Director, Cassandra Costello, by another Staffer who I had sent it to.  So, attention and ideas were put forth.  I think the desperate attention to this fence that leads Our Zoo's Guests into the Zoo, is important.

That initial clean-up included pulling weeds at the base of the fence, which unfortunately made the appearance worse.  It exposed years of wood rot. One would think taking care of this would be a priority.  It is the first thing people see.  Both Visitors and perspective Visitors.   For years, I've been asking, Why is this fence still standing?

Thumbs Down that this fence has been literally broken down for six weeks.  Maybe there is a plan, but good grief, some attempt to prop it up should have made by now.  This length of time is just unacceptable.

A few weeks ago, new banners went up one the fence closest to the path into the parking lot.  I thought, like nine months ago, great, attention is back on the outside appearance of Our Zoo. So far, that has been the extent of it.

Thumbs Up for the new banners.  Something that was in my suggestions nine months ago.

Not long before that fence panel fell, I spied this when I arrived.  Not gonna lie, I parked with glee and hope, but when I passed by and asked, alas, these guys were not there to take down the tired fence, only replace the portion close to the entrance path, and the barbed wire on the chain link behind the broken down fence that makes Our Zoo look like it's in a third world country rather than it's position on our beautiful coast.

This is the part that was being replaced. The black vinyl fencing (now covered by the banners) that had been a continuous victim of graffiti.  If they were going to replace this, I would have preferred an additional chain link to have been extended from the one behind the broken down fence, along this line and around the corner along the start of the path into the parking lot.  That area could use a higher fence, especially because no one can seem to shovel out the sand so the ground is lowered and doesn't create an easy access from outside the Zoo.  To me, it seems like a vulnerable point of entry for both sinister humans and wild Animals.

I did find it curious that the old vinyl fence was replaced.  It didn't look in much different shape than the new one, but I never fully inspected it, as the broken down wooden fence is all that catches my attention.  Unless, there's lasting graffiti, which the new fence had this tag for at least a couple weeks.

Above shows the turn of the corner I mentioned.  The fence not only looks like it get lower, but the accumulation of sand creates a higher standing point.  Thankfully that beautiful tree is in the optimum position to shelter the issue a bit.

Standing on the sand behind the tree, shows the fence height.

Someone needs to shovel that way down.  This is not the first time I've written about this.  It's been like this for many years, and is another in a long list of head-shakers.

While I'm complaining about presentation, Can someone just get a can of Black Paint to cover the graffiti?

I've been looking for at least a couple years for an old Sloat photo that shows the broken down fence, so I can get an actual age on it.  Finally found one a few weeks ago.  While the fence may be older, this photo dated 1970, puts it at fifty-five years minimum.  It's weathered wood and crumbling concrete pillars are tired.  It's time for a change.

With the exception of a corner to the left of this photo (not shown), this is the entire length of the fence.  I'm showing this to illustrate the size comparison to the fence line of the Botanical Garden, shown below.

The reason I'm showing this is because the Botanical Garden got a new fence courtesy of a RecPark project, and the Zoo didn't.  The details about this, are in my opinion shameful.

I have had several draft posts about the negligence from all managing entities, including RecPark.  I've written too much regarding the subject, but I'm going to rehash it in upcoming posts.  For the purpose of this post, I'm isolating the info to this specific issue.

In 2020, during the pandemic shutdown, the RecPark had a fence replacement project for facilities in their department. The RecPark did one for the Botanical Gardens that ran well over a mile around the perimeter, and with the additional inside, probably totaled close to two miles.  The Zoo's problem area is minimal in comparison.  There was signage outside the BG about the project, including the project manager's contact information.

I emailed him and I told him the situation at the Zoo.  That the fence has been there for decades with no attention to it and it's crumbling.  I noted they need help, and that the Zoo is in their department.  I explained that the Director is negligent in caring about how the front of the Zoo looks, or much else, and allegedly there is no money.   I said I was just FYI'ing them and inquiring whether or not the Zoo would qualify considering it's a City owned facility.  I also noted that the Bison fence is the responsibility of the RecPark so possibly this could fall into the same type category, as well noting the Botanical Gardens is operated by an independent management team just like the Zoo is.  The project manager got back to me and he said had not heard anything about the Zoo, and he would ask his boss.  When his boss replied, he sent me the email.  His boss said the Zoo can pay for it themselves!  Which I thought was outrageous considering this is a City owned property and in my opinion, regardless of who's responsibility it technically is per the lease agreement, morally they should have cared about this place in their own department.

They allegedly had left over in that fence project pot and could have done it.  They just didn't want to.  They could have helped the Zoo, THEIR ZOO.  That's my issue with this part of the situation.

For over fifteen years, the Zoo's former CEO/Director left the fence in worse shape than this, if you can imagine that even being possible.  It was only painted this brown color a couple years ago.  I think it was right before a ZooFest.  For those interested, here's the link to a video I made, that shows the state it was in before being painted.

Additions To Madagascar - It's A Big Help, But Could More Save It?

In my post dated May 14, MADagascar Disaster Needs Help - What I Think It Needs..." , I made some notes and suggestions for how to possibly make this area look better.   I wrote...

> It needs to come together, and start looking cohesive in ways that can be done affordably and soon-ish.  Madagascar needs help, because left as, it definitely looks unfinished, and therefore failed.

Approaching the area from Mandrills.  There is no Madagascar signage from either side.

All that BBQ Pit has provided is place for people to sit and have their lunch.  It's ridiculous and an eyesore.  It's been sitting there unused for what seems like over a year.  It needs to be used for something, for now, maybe have one of the Interpretive Ambassadors, giving talks a few times a day about What's Happening Today At Our Zoo.  I have another idea I'm going to sort out and possibly pitch, and that could also have a "talk" component in conjunction with it.

Basically, it needs to be active with something Zoo related and a sandwich board stating the activities.  It just needs to make sense.  Not be a blob of bricks for people to flail about in.<

Last week there was a series of signage around the Madagascar exhibit area.  Thumbs-up to this addition.  These signs present the area in a way that l has it make some sense, and look less bare.  It's a definite start to bringing this area together.

I entered the area from the north side.  I saw the one at the Baobab Tree, but bypassed it, since I'm not a fan of that structure.   Went back to photo it after seeing the one at Fossa.

Continuing on towards Mandrills there was yet another, a three-sided display, located closer to the BBQ Pit.

Finally, one on the south side across from Mandrill's, that notes the area as, Madagascar Center.  So, I assume this side is the official start of the exhibit area.

I never heard the area being called "Center", so they do need to do something else that has this area appear active.

The X to the right of photo shows where the three-sided signage is located.   It also shows that people just hang out in the BBQ Pit, usually eating.  For some reason this really irritates me.  They should think about roping it off to discourage people from sitting there.  The idea of having sandwich boards with Today At The Zoo info, Keeper Talks, ect. positioned in the Pit would make it look in use, without being an off-putting closed area.

Again something needs to happen here, so it doesn't look like an abandoned whatever it's supposed to be.  And that doesn't include the original plan to bring the Tortoises out there to the people.  The Tortoises are fine in their home, leave them be.  As suggested, something active would be to have the Interpretive Guides (although I haven't seen them lately) talking about what's going on at the Zoo that day, or whatever.  Having Docents stationed there, with BioCarts for Lemurs, Fossa, Tortoises, or even Mandrills.  I'd like to see daily Conservation talks, maybe Leticia who does the Awareness Day Conservation pop-ups can set-up something in the Pit.

In a post from May 1, I mentioned the Zoo's Newsletter notation about a breeding pair of Blue-Eyed Black Lemurs.  I wrote...

> Lemur curiosity.  Sometime last year in one of the Zoo Newsletters, it was noted that we have received a pair of Blue-Eyed Black Lemurs for breeding.  That exciting news was followed by sentences basically notating that the public would never see them, this was a behind the scenes event.  Myself and other Members I know were bummed about this, and in my opinion announcing such an event was unnecessary, if the public would not be able to have the experience of viewing offspring.  I never got around to writing about this, even though I did take photos of the Lemur Aviaries from the backside that faces into the Madagascar area.  I had planned to post them as a mock-up idea of how they could have limited viewing of this future family, from that perspective. <

A few weeks ago, the Lemur Aviaries that I noted face into Madagascar, not only had the Blue-Eyed Black Lemurs in them, but there was signage, making it an inclusive part of the Madagascar area!  Thumbs up!

Another thing I've wondered about, is why don't they highlight the two Madagascar Birds that live in the African Aviary?  The area has been desperate for live Animals, they should have signage for these two species in the "Center", that also directs people to See Them In The African Aviary.  They show the Ibis on one of the new signs, but no mention that we have them??

I stated in a previous post that I had an idea that would really do wonders for bringing that area together.  I've also stated that there are certain ideas I hold close.  Considering the whole Lion/Panda BS I'm not keen on sharing something that would create revenue that could end up in the Panda Pot, while we lose Our Lions. That said, I also want this area to reach good aesthetic potential.  I also don't think Leadership cares or wants my ideas.  I've also allowed my mind to let go of feeling like my ideas can help Save Our Zoo.  So, if I end up sharing this, it will be with one person, and will be decided in the moment I cross paths with that person.

Anyone Else Bothered By Zoo's Use Of Our Lions On Impending Eve Of Their Eviction?

For this week's Lion tale, I'm just going to put forth how I feel about the Zoo pimping out Our Lions, who they plan to evict.

This isn't about hating on the Event, because I think they need more events like this.  I have always thought the use of Food Trucks, Product Vendors, et al, were an under used draw.  I mentioned the use of these at least a few times, in connection with ideas that included after hour events, years before the previous summer event Sunset Fridays started a couple years ago.  So, seeing the video from Roar and Pour, and the attendance it drew, I'm hopeful that there will be more like it. That said, unlike Sunset Fridays, the price point was a bit more exclusive.  I believe in these higher priced events because the Zoo needs the money, but I also believe in inclusive events that are more budget friendly.  Sunset Fridays in my opinion from a fundraising perspective, could have been a bit higher priced. The Zoo should aim for stand alone events like this (as opposed to the current Dino add-on, which is on point) that are in the $20-30 range.

Apologies for the digression.  So much with the Zoo triggers related thoughts.  That said, a comment was left on the Zoo's Facebook post (below), in reference to more "fundraising" events, and I highly agree.   The lack of fundraising through eighteen years of the last administration, has been a huge issue for me.  Obviously, the absence of that has contributed to the state Our Zoo is in.  A huge issue all-around.  Additionally, you can also see my comment, "Too bad Roar & Pour revenue isn't going towards upgrading for Our Lions so they can stay in their home at Our Zoo!"

The Zoo even brought out a costumed Lion for the event.

Since the name of this event is Lion related, and I think has been done before, what will they do when Our Zoo has no Lions?  It will be really lame if they have this event again, in a Zoo that has No Lions.

Back to the use of Our Lions.  When I saw Jasiri on the new entrance banner, my immediate thought was that it was disturbing considering they are evicting Our Lions.

I do like that he's there and that his tagline is "Fierce", even though in my opinion that does not reflect his individual character, but it does reflect mine.  While I may not always be fierce in action, I will always be fierce in conviction.  This Leo Lady, is not happy that Our Lions are leaving, and I will continue to be fiercely vocal with my feelings about the Zoo choosing to clear and hold Our Lion's House for Pandas, instead of choosing to fundraise for the upgrades that would keep them in their home.

All I can say to the Zoo is, Use Our Lions while you can, because it will be ridiculous once they're gone.

A Year Of Independence Is Approaching - Has Our Zoo Seen Enough Change?

August 1, will mark one year since disgraced former Zoo CEO/Director Tanya Peterson's exit.  The other day I remembered that I wrote a post last year about Our Zoo Gaining Independence from her mismanagement and all-round toxicity.

Today, I'm expressing some of the changes I've seen, and those I haven't, in the eleven months of new Leadership.  That Leadership is lead by new CEO/Director Cassandra Costello, but unfortunately backed by the same Zoological Society Board.  I mention the Board, because I still strongly believe the Board (as well as the RecPark as oversight entity) needs restructuring, and redefining.  In my opinion, without that, it seems like the same game, and that can hold Our Zoo back from reaching it's optimum potential.

I'm going to start by flat-out saying, I expected more betterment changes in a years time than I've seen happen.  I feel like after witnessing eighteen years of destruction, I personally would have made better use of a year's worth of time.  That said, maybe I have no idea what it takes to get things done, but I have the fixer mentality, I see an issue and want it fixed now.   I acknowledge, the situation Costello has stepped into, so maybe then there needs for a better process and delegation of tasks.

In a brief overview from my perspective, the last year has seen the the decision to exit both Chimpanzees and Lions from Our Zoo, no Fundraising efforts (with the exception of the Entry Bricks) and no attention to the broken down fence that leads people into Our Zoo.   These are major issues rooted in, the lack of recognition of what two large species mean to Our Zoo, the lack of creative ways to fund Our Zoo's needs (like those needed to keep Our Lions), and the lack of pride in the outside appearance of Our Zoo.

These personal highlights, are not meant to take away from the immense overall change that Costello has brought, but these things I've mentioned are big thumbs down.  There can be both.  I have appreciated a lot of things that have been done, and do not discard those efforts, but I want to see more.  People tell me things take time.  I'm sorry, but in my opinion, Our Zoo does not have the luxury of time.

I applaud Costello coming in with enthusiasm, and tenacity, to better Our Zoo, and I hope that carries on, despite the tight rope and obstacles.  I welcomed that she immediately created an environment that fostered optimism, and lifted morale. Although, it is my guess that the initial morale is not as high as it started, as no one is happy about the decision to evict Our Lions.

I'm going to leave it at that.

This Summer's Dino event looks to be a draw, and I hope successful.  Last week's weekday visit, was crowded, so hopefully that's the sign of increased attendance.  But, the Zoo needs increased attendance all year.  So, hopefully they are planning big things, in the way of events and fundraising for the Holidays.  I'll be watching, as I did last October thru New Years, when I saw three months of missed opportunities during Giving Season.

I look forward to the next six months, and seeing how things progress.  The clock is ticking.
