Storm Takes Down Fence At Bison - Will RecPark Make Repair A Priority?

830a. I started words for a letter to Supervisors and RecPark. It immediately took a different shape and I paused to publish the previous post.  Then I ate and watched a movie.  Never got to emails, but made dents in drafts and turns out, those draft words prompted what would be this post. The day is coming to a close and I'm just now publishing.

As I was laying in bed this rainy Monday morning, about to launch into those emails, the first thing that started to flow was, the Bison issue.  The same old thing about the dried out meadow I've been Roaring about for years.  And now, after Saturday's storm, portions of the fence are down.

A friend was out yesterday, so I asked her to check on the Bison.  You can see by her photos, the storm ripped through JFK right at the Bison.

📷GraceR.

Damage visible on fence that lines JFK (above), and reportedly along east side fence, where a tree has fallen into the enclosure (below).

📷GraceR.

Also destroyed in that same stretch were two very familiar trees. One in front of the Bison, that caused the JFK fence damage, has been a Hawk nesting tree for many years.  The other, located directly across the road, was the massive tree that Great Horned Owls nested in for decades, until switching a few years ago after a branch was removed.  A pair of Hawks also nested in the same tree.  I spent hours, almost daily for years watching the Owls raise their babies.  Seeing these trees both uprooted is sad.  The damage to that whole area is devastating to the wildlife and my memories.

📷GraceR.

Whether or not the damage was done in that 6a "tornado" time frame, I don't know, so I don't know if the Bison were in the front meadow at the time.  When my friend went by in the afternoon, they were thankfully safe in the back.

I know there's alot of work to be done clearing out the fallen trees everywhere, but I hope the RecPark is going to prioritize repairing the fence at the Bison Paddock.  They've ignored needs there for so many years, I hope this won't fall into neglect like the *Sprinklers.

I worry that Coyotes will be able to breach the fence and harm the Bison, as they have been reported to present as a pack, so it's in the realm of possibility.  I think back to the young Bison that lost their life, when a Dog was able to get into the enclosure under the fence, scaring it into the electric fence, causing internal injuries. When I went out the next day and checked the fence, it had thirty-six holes in the ground line along the perimeter, because of RecPark negligence.  Hopefully they make sure the replacement fence is installed down into the ground, they way it should always be.

I'll be out tomorrow, and I hope to see that the fence has been secured.

The Zoo Charade, Sad and Irresponsible - Time For New Management - Guest Post

I took a break the last couple days, and started early working on emails networking my posts to necessary City players.  An early morning comment to my last blog *post came in from a regular reader and until recent times, a Zoo Member.

We became friends visiting the Chimpanzees.  When the Orangutans arrived, we cried together as we watched them, watching the Chimps, everyday for eight months. Their sad faces pressed against the caged tubes that were their only outside access, looking down at the Chimps in their yard, moving freely in a large space, climbing and stretching, something they couldn't do, because they didn't have an enclosure, only cages.

The posts on this blog are mostly only my words.  Opinions, thoughts, ideas, all of it, based on my experience.  I'm not alone with my words, my feelings.  To my knowledge, no other Members who visit regularly have been vocal.  This year we have heard from Staff via media and Activists whose agendas are questionable. Thankful to have other members of the public who get what's going on.  This person is one of them.

"It is way past time for the SF Zoo management to be held accountable for its deterioration. The focus of the Panda project should be ‘what is best for the Pandas?’ but an entity which purports to care for Animals is putting potential dollars first.

And as the plan has been amended, I understand the sensitive Pandas will be sleeping next to Lions??  How atrocious!!!

It’s a sad day when an irresponsible entity tries to call off an audit they may not pass, just so they can keep the charade going.  Let the audit begin, and may it be honest enough to require big changes at the Zoo. Zoo visitors deserve it. Zookeepers - the good ones - deserve it. And most importantly, the Animals deserve a team that puts them FIRST.

Get rid of Tanya!

I get the feeling that people are getting very tired of established authorities who screw us over and over. We are tired of their excuses and defensive quips. They take big salaries and pat themselves on the back for jobs others could do with better results.

It’s time for new management at the San Francisco Zoo….

… Perhaps a team that operates with transparency and empathy.

… Perhaps other people with good will towards the community and compassion for animals.

Please keep up the good fight!"

Will The Panda Plan Crumble? Let's Hope So! - Zoo In The News

With my out of the house days done for the week, I woke this Friday morning, and within minutes was starting this post.  Get it out of the way, is the goal.  Hopefully nothing else surfaces this weekend.

After my documentation efforts last weekend, six blog posts and a petition, I thought I'd get a break this weekend, but evidently with no rest from the wicked side of things, I guess that's not possible.

Like most everyone else, I'm disgusted, frustrated and exhausted by everything and everyone associated with running Our Zoo.

The incompetence of all managing entities is overwhelming, and the allowance of this management shit-show to continue is outrageous and mind-numbing.

I was sent three write-ups about the Zoo in the last couple days.  The one from the news source The SF Standard, is the one I want to comment on.

https://sfstandard.com/2024/12/11/sf-zoo-audit-panda/

First, seriousness a bit aside, I love that Vitus Leung, the "Deputy Director" has his panties in a twist about the audit possibly preventing the Zoo getting Pandas.  Things often happen the way they should, although Why our poor Zoo has been subjected to Tanya Peterson for sixteen years has still not presented itself.

Let me rant some on Vitus, because I haven't enough.  This guy shouldn't even be allowed to clean toilets at the Zoo, let alone be Deputy Director.  I didn't know who this guy was, when I heard him call one of Our Goats ugly.  He's been on my shit list ever since.  No one who has the opportunity to work in an Animal Care Facility, should Disrespect the Animals.  I was vocal about what he said, and for that matter about Primate Curator Robbie, who made horrible comments about Minnie Chimpanzee after her passing, yet both these disgusting humans are still employed by the Zoo.  As is Director Peterson, who kept Orangutans in caged tubes.

Our Zoo not only Needs a management overhaul, it needs a good house cleaning.

Ok, so my rant about Vitus turned into a mini-outting of three people who should be immediately kicked to the curb.  That said, the list is much longer.  It is my opinion that Vitus Leung does nothing to add to the management of the Zoo.  He has seemingly only been an extra mouth-piece for Director Tanya Peterson, who refuses to speak much for herself, although we continue to hear the slap from the huge pat on the back she gives herself.  In addition to the rumor on the grounds that allegedly Peterson added the Deputy Director title to Leung's VP of HR position, was to bump his salary, ahead of his retirement, it seems maybe he is playing an aggressive role in the Panda Plan?

So, the audit.  Reported to take up to a year to complete, I guess that means another year of Our Zoo languishing under Director Peterson and her sucking $320,000+ from the payroll, for allegedly working less than part-time, as well as digging a deeper grave for Our Zoo.

Tanya Peterson should at the very least, be removed as Zoo Director, during the duration of the audit.

Beyond the very least, the Mayor needs to over-ride all current managing entities and Restructure Zoo Management, starting with lifting the weight that the Panda Plan has put on the Zoo.

These statements from the Standard article, have warranted my reaction.

> “Having this audit may significantly diminish our chance of bringing giant pandas back to the San Francisco Zoo,” deputy director Vitus Leung told The Standard. “While we respect the board’s decision, we are disappointed by their approach and timing.” <

This guy, talking about timing.  Too bad.  What about all the time, sixteen years to be specific, that's been wasted because of Tanya Peterson's mismanagement as Director?  So much time in which the Zoo could have been moving forward into reaching it's potential.  Ugh, this guy.

> Leung criticized the October report’s methodology as severely flawed and said zoo leadership will present a rebuttal next week. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and passed the 2022 inspection with no significant safety issue identified. <

Good grief.  You can see what the angle of that document will be, just by him calling it a rebuttal.   Will the rebuttal include reasoning on Why the Orangutans are still waiting for an appropriate home?  The audacity of this guy and historically of Peterson, is sickening.  Can't wait.  I'll clear my calendar because I'm sure the "rebuttal" will be a doozy.

Also, the Accreditation by the AZA, is hugely flawed.  One of the things they look for in the accreditation process is what they call, the "gold standard for a modern zoological facility". The indisputable fact that San Francisco Zoo was given re-Accreditation for housing Orangutans in an ancient (sixty-year old) enclosure, that they themselves previously deemed unacceptable to house Chimpanzees, is disturbing, curious and suspicious.  They have denied other facilities for less, yet SFZoo continues to pass.

Keeping Orangutans in caged tubes, Squirrel Monkeys in a concrete room and a Komodo Dragon in a terrarium, is considered gold standard modern practices to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

> The zoo will likely spend $40 million for the panda project in the next decade; the cost will be borne by private donations. <

It has not been reported that private donations with cover the costs of the Pandas for a ten-year lease, only costs to get the here, and possibly sustain them in the first year. Until it is confirmed that private donors will foot the bill for the rental fees, exclusive staff (Keepers and Vets), additional Security, and outside sourcing of Bamboo, for the duration of their stay, no one should be making that assumption.

And, considering the Board of Supervisors stipulation that funds raised by the Mayor for Pandas, also be used for current Animal Needs, does not apply to funds raised by the Zoo Director, any "attendance bump" monies brought in by the Pandas should hugely go to current Animal Needs and other upgrades.

> Last week, San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan suggested at the audit hearing that if the zoo needs to pause its panda project to address financial and safety issues, “so be it.” <

Supervisor Chan, seems to be the only one with a reasonable thought.

Supervisor Myrna Melgar on the other hand, makes this delusional statement,...

> Despite the tensions, Melgar remains enthusiastic about the pandas. “I am 110% in support of the panda deal,” she said. “I think it will be great for our city and for the west side.” <

Considering no sense has come to the Zoological Society Board, the RecPark Commissioners or Mayor Breed,  let's hope this audit does put the necessary stop to the Zoo aquiring Pandas at this time.

Going to end this one here, because at this point it's the same old, same old.  Knocking on empty brains, hoping someday, someone will be home.

Petition - Demand Mayor Breed STOP The Panda Plan

I mentioned in my previous post, that I planned to do a Petition as a supplement to that post.  Here it is...

https://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/282/196/851/

The point of this Petition, is obviously to reach the Action Goal as stated in the title, but additionally as another platform to gain awareness.

NOTE:  If you're inclind to Sign...  This Petition site allows you to sign Anonymously.  It will appear as Name Not Displayed.  So please use that option, instead of choosing not to sign.

If you read the previous post, you can skip right to signing.  I used the same exact text in the Petition body.

With this post, I think I'm done for a couple weeks.  I hope. Only one in draft!   But, after six posts and the Petition over two days, other than networking the Petition and Posts, I need a break.  Check out the recent posts if interested.

Breed Needs To Pull the Plug on Panda Plan

This year San Francisco's (now outgoing) Mayor London Breed, took an interest in Our Zoo for the first time.  Unfortunately it wasn't the interest Our Zoo needed.  Instead of learning about the Needs of our Zoo, Mayor Breed joined the ranks of those who have used Our Zoo for their own personal Wants, and decided bringing Giant Pandas to Our Zoo was a fantastic idea. What it was and is, is fantastical.  If Our Zoo was in a better position, Pandas would be great, but not til then.

With all that has happened with the Zoo since her Panda announcement, and considering she did not get re-elected, she has no skin in the game, Mayor Breed needs to end what she started and use her authority to over-ride Director Peterson and the Zoological Society, and stop the current process of bringing Pandas to Our Zoo at this time.  Instead urging the Zoo to tend to all the Needs and Fixes, and revisit acquiring Pandas in a couple years.

The Mayor entered into this whirlwind touting, economic gain by bringing Pandas here, but at no time was there any realistic consideration for what hosting Pandas would cost the Zoo, and not just financially.

Either ignoring the actual state of Our Zoo, or being in cahoots with Zoo Director Tanya Peterson to create the illusion that Pandas in Our Zoo is currently a doable option, Mayor Breed's Panda Plan has already caused chaos, and the Pandas aren't even here.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, and assume Mayor Breed entered into this fantasy not knowing anything about the Zoo. She bought the illusion that there was an Asian Conservation area with a designated space for Pandas, that Director Peterson sold her.  Then she sold it to China.  Now, that's the assumption.  If she indeed knew that was untrue, and knew anything about the housing issues for many acquisitions (Orangutans+) in the Zoo, then shame on her.

Mayor Breed continued to chase Pandas, even though there is no way she wasn't enlightened along the way.  I know my efforts to inform her, reached her inner circle, as well as the Board of Supervisors, and Park Commission. That combined with concerns voiced in the media, there was no way she could escape the facts. I am very clear with my words and presentation, very thorough in my networking and very tenacious.  If she is still uneducated about the Zoo, it's because she has chosen to remain so.

Let's take note of the probable scenario if/when Pandas get here.

First let's note that it's almost certain that Mayor Breed and Director Peterson, both wanted Pandas for selfish reasons. They both faced job uncertainty earlier this year, and thought Pandas would save them.  Thankfully Breed was not re-elected as she is the one to blame for the literal Pandemonium.  It is well rumored among staff that allegedly Director Peterson had planned to retire months ago, but decided to stay until Pandas got here. She is delusional if she thinks having acquired Pandas on her resume will outshine the damage she has done to the Orangutans and the other Animals who have suffered because of her.

Now let's talk about Peterson's $20 Million goal. Since Mayor Breed couldn't raise a dollar and won't be in the picture after January 8, her promise that Panda costs would not come from Zoo, led most to believe that meant The City and private Donors would fund the Pandas, is a moot point.  How long will that $20 Million last with Panda rental fees, enclosure work, dedicated staff, extra security and flying in Bamboo?  Tanya Peterson will allegedly walk away from the Zoo before Panda year two, leaving it with a hefty annual bill just for Pandas, without looking back, except to blame the next Director when the Zoo has to send the Pandas back because they can't afford them.

When the Board of Supervisors approved Mayor Breed's fundraising plan, they put a stipulation on that some of the funds raised would go to the Needs of Animals currently living at the Zoo.  An assurance that all the money would not be just for Pandas.  Now with Director Peterson the only one to have raised funds, that stipulation does not apply, meaning most likely no other Animal Needs will benefit. The assumption by Peterson is that the attendance will double when Pandas get here. Whether or not that will be true, it would seem that any additional revenue from an attendance increase, would have to go back into the Panda Pot, to pay the next years expenses.  It seems like this will be a continuing cycle, that leaves the Zoo and the current Animals in the same position it is in now.

This plea is not about the sensationalized attacks on failures put forth by Anti-Zoo Activists, that continue to flood their respective social media, and the attention they have been given by mainstream media.  It is about being realistic, about what the Zoo can financially handle and how proceeding with bringing Pandas to Our Zoo will affect the Needs of Animals that already live there, and the future of the Zoo.

If Mayor Breed ever cared about the Zoo, she needs to do the right thing for it now.  She's got one month left in Office...

It's time for Mayor Breed to Pull the Plug on the Panda Plan, and stop the insanity.

The Zoo Has Released Their Panda Enclosure Design

The SF Standard published this article on Thursday.

https://sfstandard.com/2024/12/05/panda-new-home-sf-zoo/

This is my fifth post this weekend, and up til a few minutes ago, this post was farther down the draft list.  I thought this one would flow into the next one better.  As well it's shorter, so why not bat it out.  The post that was supposed to be next, will hopefully still be done today, as it's got a timeline attached to it.  It's aimed at Mayor Breed over-riding the Zoo and stopping the Panda Plan before she leaves office, which happens in exactly one month.  I may also, still follow through with supplementing that post with a Petition, for extra awareness.

The plans put forth in this article show the use of a different Big Cat Yard than I had heard was being considered.  I wrote a *post Nov 11 that detailed what I knew to date.  I'll link it at the bottom.  The Yard now confirmed to be used, is in part (it's since been expanded) the same Yard I saw Pandas occupying in the 80s.

Other than the change in Yards, the plan seems much the same, with the addition of "visitor walkways."  Where they plan to put those is curious, and with their track record for design, will probably look out of place.  Other than that the design looks nice, even though filling in the moat, is still a concern for the future use of the enclosure, when the Pandas are no longer here.  It will not be able to house any Cat species with ground that is flush with a viewing barrier.

In another **post last month, I wrote...

If Tanya Peterson wants to do the Zoo a solid after all the damage she's done, she should concede to the reality of what having Pandas will cost the Zoo, not just financially, but in regrouping after her reign.  If Peterson ever cared about the Zoo, she needs to consider the Zoo's Needs, over her Wants, and LEAVE the Zoo with that money she raised, so the next Director can use it to fix the Zoo.  Then, maybe Pandas can be a welcomed addition to the Zoo for it's 100th Anniversary in 2029.

I still think that would be the decent thing for Director Peterson to do, but we all know decent is not part of Tanya Peterson's style.

This article clearly sends the message that neither Director Peterson, the Zoological Society Board, or the RecPark Commissioners care what bringing Pandas here at this moment in time will do to the Zoo and it's thriving into the future.

With all that's happened this year, they aren't stopping.  The selfish, narcissistic train just keeps on rolling.

I sure hope I'm wrong in thinking the Zoo's current and future Needs will sink under the financial weight of the Pandas.  I don't think the Zoo will be able to afford to keep Pandas past the first year.  They are all thinking that the rise in attendance is going to pay for the Pandas, and that may be, but that won't last.  And while the additional funds go to Pandas, the other Animals will have to continue to forgo their Needs.

That all said.  I wish as much thought and care went into building the Orangutans an appropriate home, as has for the Pandas.  If the Pandas do end up moving in, I'm sure they will enjoy it.

San Francisco Zoo CEO Tanya Peterson says the design "will be a win-win for everybody, including the animals.

Unless I see the Orangutans getting a netted enclosure and a dayroom, the Animals Peterson is referring to are only the Pandas.

Shame On Joint Zoo Panel Member Advisors

I started this before the last post, but that most recent news article with RecPark Commissioner Mazzola acting like his negligence has played no part in the position Our Zoo is in right now, took precedence.

A couple weeks ago the Zoo was again in the news.  I got several news alerts in the days after the November 21, RecPark Commission Meeting.  The Report that was previously submitted to the RecPark Commission and Zoological Society was noted as now being the catalyst for an audit of Zoo management.  The Report was put forth by Joint Zoo Committee Meeting Panel Members, Jane Tobin, an Advisor from the Animal Control and Welfare Commission, and Dr Joseph Spinelli, a long-time Veterinary Advisor.

I previously wrote about the Report in two back-to-back posts.  In one, I shared my feelings about the Report and how it was formed.  I'm sorry, but I must share again.  I hate repeating myself, but in all that's gone on with the Zoo, it seems necessary.  Why?  Because in over sixteen years, every issue that has been raised with the exception of not removing Our Chimpanzees from the only home they've known, has fallen on deaf ears.  Those being the ears of the San Francisco Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, the San Francisco Zoological Society Board and Members, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department Commissioners, and the Joint Zoo Commitee Panel Members (consisting of Society Board, RecPark Commissioners and noted Advisors), from 2008 to Present.

Among those that have never listened sits Dr Spinelli, a Veterinary Advisor, who has sat on the Panel as a non-voting member since I started going to Joint Zoo Meetings in 2009.  At the time, the other non-voting member was Sally Stephens, an Advisor from the Animal Control and Welfare Commission. Stephens was replaced by Jane Tobin, also from ACWC.

As a Native and lifelong Resident of the Richmond District, the Zoo has always been a part of my life.  In my young adult years I visted the Zoo a couple times a month, but never sought out an abundance of information about the Animals as individuals or about Zoo history, beyond what came my way.  Maybe that was just the space I was in, or maybe that was because there was no internet during a good portion of that time.  So, in 2008 after suffering a devastating loss, my visits became almost daily and my need to know everything I could about the Animals, became my primary passion.  Learning all I could from Keepers, spilled over to intense internet research, fueled at first by wanting to learn about Animals I grew-up visiting, who were no longer with us.  Prince Charles "Charlie", the white Tiger, Sabrina, the Black Leopard and Hippo mates, Puddles & Cuddles, were all my favorites.  In that research, I put together chronological details of Animal Residents and Events in Zoo history.

One of the hundreds of articles I have read about the Zoo, was about recommendations put forth to the Joint Zoo Committee by Dr Spinelli and Sally Stephens about the Polar Bear enclosures.  It resonated with me as in the late 90s I had written an email to then Zoo Director David Anderson, regarding the Polar Bears, and my concern about pacing, and green coloring on their fur.  I got a long email from him, with detailed responses to my concerns.  I think the article was from SFGate, sometime between 2009-2012ish.  I apologize for not having the specific date, as I could no longer find it online.

I bring this is up, as nothing ever came of Stephens and Spinelli's, thoughts, concerns, advice, whatever they were putting forth.  The Bears continued to live on concrete.  So, deaf ears from the voting members of the panel, comprised of Members of the Zoological Society Board and RecPark Commissioners.

Over the last sixteen years, as my involvement with the Zoo progressed, it became very clear, very fast that things were not right with how the Zoo was being managed.  I have a management background, but even more important to the matter, I care.  When you care about something as strong as I do about the Animals and the Zoo, you can spot the failures.  Those failures were screaming Lack of Care from all entities tasked with the management responsibility of making sure the Animals Needs were taken care of, and the Zoo was thriving at optimum.

I've noted them before and I'm going to note them again, and most likely keep repeating the list, because not one of these people should be allowed to deflect from their involvement in neglecting the Zoo.  They are responsible for the position it is now in.  They can deflect, they can claim ignorance, they can boo-hoo that they didn't know, that's not my problem.  What I know, is that it was and is, their responsibility to know.  The Zoological Society is THE managing entity.  And each person from the San Francisco Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, the San Francisco Zoological Society Board and Members, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department Commissioners, and down to the Joint Zoo Commitee Panel Members (consisting of Society Board, RecPark Commissioners and noted Advisors), have had a responsibility to the Zoo, that they have failed to fulfill for at least the last sixteen years.

So, while I may have digressed a bit, it's because I'm so angry and disgusted by all these people.  That said, the point of this post is to call attention to Joint Zoo Committee Advisors Jane Tobin and Joseph Spinelli, for how they formed their Report.

My issue is them consulting with, or rather only with Activists.  These Activists are Anti-Zoo, with Close Zoo Agendas, and a lack of knowledge about Our Zoo.  Like Tobin and Spinelli, these are people who have spent little to no time in Our Zoo, and therefore have no real knowledge about what goes on there.  That is because their only goal is getting Zoos closed.  They may come to the Zoo, look around and make criticisms, but not seek out conversation with established Zoo Staff.  Instead using information, often from over a decade ago, to support their agenda.

As someone who has been involved with what goes on at the Zoo, going into my seventeenth year, I know that the communication I have built with Staffers has been essential to understanding what goes on and has happened at Our Zoo.  I think the experience of so many years on the ground there, seeing things with my own eyes, asking questions, and having constructive dialog, has allowed me to fairly document issues, as well as make logical suggestions, both in Animal situations and with what the Zoo needs to do to thrive into the future.  So, when I hear these Activists speak like they know what's best, I'm Disgusted.  It has also allowed me the knowledge of and appreciation for, the value that the majority of the Animal Care Staff has, with their knowledge and care.  These are the people who should be listened to.

So, to surmise and notate on this post's title, I find it not only Shameful, but Offensive, that Animal Welfare Advisor Jane Tobin and Vetrinary Advisor Joseph Spinelli, did not seek to include at least two long-time Animal Care Staffers from Our Zoo, in their Report.  Instead to exclusively consult with four Animal Activists.  My interpretation of this action is because of a few things, but rooted in the simple fact that both Tobin and Spinelli know absolutely nothing about Our Zoo.  I also find Dr Spinelli to be a particular issue, as I personally witnessed him berate and reprimand Keepers at a Joint Zoo Meeting, for speaking about Animal Care concerns in their departments.  Considering this, and the lack of previous care about Our Zoo by both Spinelli and Tobin, in addition to all other entities that are tasked with Zoo Oversight, they have no interest in taking a true interest in Our Zoo.  If any of them had, their presence on Zoo grounds and speaking with staff members would be well-known, and more importantly, Our Zoo would not be in the state or position it currently is.

Will Any Managing Entity Of The Zoo Ever Admit To Negligence?

As I struggle to finish a list of posts, the Zoo was in the News again this week.  I haven't been posting the News articles or much reaction to them, because I feel like too many are a rehash, and I also don't want to spend time roaring about the same old things, that have been falling on deaf ears for over thirteen years.

I am furious that Our Zoo was allowed to get to this point (not just the audit, but the state of things that have caused the public drama and scandal), all because it was neglected by those responsible for making sure it was managed properly.

When the City allowed the Zoological Society, a fundraising entity, to take over management of the Zoo, a manging structure was put in place.  The structure included oversight duties by the City Recreation and Park Department.

I don't know how things were prior to 2009, when I started monitoring what was going on, but since then, not one person tasked with making sure the Zoo was being run optimally, has done their job.

What each person has done, is ignore their responsibility to Our Zoo.

While Zoo Director Tanya Peterson is the source of all the wrong that has caused our Zoo to get to this point, make no mistake, every person who was a Zoological Society Board Member or RecPark Commissioner during the last sixteen years, is complicit.

Each person, allowed, and continues to allow, Peterson's reign of mismanagement and cruelty.  All because not one person who is part of the Zoological Society or the RecPark, CARED to watch over Our Zoo.  Not one person could bother to come to the Zoo, ask questions at the Joint Zoo Committee Meetings, or even talk to Animal Care Staff.  Instead, when Staff spoke up, they were berated and reprimanded.  And I don't want to hear any Committee Member tell me that is not true, I was there.

So, to each one of you people, Shame On You!!!

The news this week reported on the Recrearion and Park Commissioners move to audit the Zoo.

This is the article I read...

https://www.pleasantonweekly.com/community/2024/12/03/report-critical-of-sf-zoo-received-by-joint-committee-more-funding-sought/

Here are the points I want to comment on...

> ...Mazzola said the Commission would likely ask the city to increase the amount it earmarks for the zoo each year after the Board of Supervisors completes its audit. <

No shit Sherlock.  There should have been a cost of living increase to the Zoo's management fee every year.  Why this hasn't happened is beyond me.  This fee is taken out of the RecPark budget.  I'm sure their budget has increased since 1993! , but screw the Zoo.  They couldn't even include the Zoo in their new fence project.

Mazzola also noted that he thought the efforts being taken would show the public they were doing right by the Zoo.

I'm so sick of hearing RecPark Commissioner Mazzola whining like he is innocent in what has happened to Our Zoo.  He and his fellow Commissioner's should have done their job way before now.

> ...“Zoo leadership, including the organization’s executive board, has repeatedly refused to acknowledge, let alone resolve, a multitude of concerns we have raised, which we believe grossly affects animal, worker, and public safety and enjoyment,” Teamsters 856 representative Corey Hallman said in a statement. <

Thank you to Corey for this statement.  Together with my 900+ posts over thirteen years, there is no way anyone can say they didn't know.  In addition to my documentation here, I wrote letters to many of the entities involved.  I would have to assume that each entity knew about my Chimp Crusade now almost ten years ago and therefore this blog.  And if they didnt, that means they ignore the attention the Zoo gets from media, which in my opinion shows they really have no interest in what goes on with the Zoo.  As well, Tanya scandals have been in news many times. Any of these people could have further investgated at those times, and never did.  Everyone knew they neglected and ignored Our Zoo.  They just chose to do whatever the hell they want, and it's disgusting, because innocent lives are involved.

Again, because it can't be said enough...  Shame on all of you!

How Will The Panda Funds Raised Be Used? - Will Current Resident Needs Benefit?

I published a post Nov 11 titled, The Zoo Director Wants Pandas - The Want Over Need Priority Is Killing Our Zoo.  It pretty much documented the selfishness of Mayor Breed, Director Peterson, and anyone else who has supported bringing Pandas to Our Zoo at this moment in time.  I ended that post with the following...

> Now let's talk about the $20 Million.  Since Mayor Breed couldn't raise a dollar and won't be in the picture after January, her promise that The City and private Donors would fund the Pandas, is a moot point.  How long will that $20 Million last with Panda rental fees, enclosure work, dedicated staff, extra security and flying in Bamboo?  Tanya Peterson will walk away from the Zoo, leaving it with a hefty annual bill just for Pandas, without looking back, except to blame the next Director when the Zoo has to send the Pandas back because they can't afford them. <

That is honestly how I see this Panda situation playing out financially.  In other financial points of the Panda Plan fundraising efforts, there is a huge point that I need to reiterate, both because it affects the Zoo as a whole, and media has not covered this for the masses.

I noted in some recent post that I had still unread email replies from a Supervisor's Office responding to specific inquiries I made at the on-set of the Board of Supervisors granting Mayor Breed an allowance to fundraise for Pandas.  I have since read those, and replied to clarify how the information now applies to Zoo Director Peterson's raised funds.  I am not happy that what I assumed would be the deal, is in fact reality.

So, to back-track, when the Board Of Supervisors granted Breed permission, it came with the stipulation that funds would also need to be used for the Needs of current Zoo Animals.  ...  I never got an answer to my question about what percentage of those funds would go to other Animals.  When I pushed, I was told the BOS was never going to monitor the funds, regardless of who raised them, which I found irresponsible.  Why make stipulations, if there is no oversight?

Since Breed failed to raise any funds, and Director Peterson had raised funds, that stipulation is void.  The Supervisor's Office confirmed that funds raised by Peterson, are treated like any other funds and can be used for whatever she wants, unless Donor Locked.  This means most likely, no funds will be used for other Animals Needs.  This seems to allow for a complete misuse of funds.

So, unfortunately it's business as usual for Director Peterson, and that's disgraceful.  It sends the message, No current Zoo Resident's Needs matters, only those of the Pandas.

Lack Of Funds = No Fundraising

This post was meant as a companion piece to my last one titled, Why Is Tanya Peterson Still The SFZoo Director (11.23).  I felt this needed to immediately follow, because that was a spur of the moment rant, as I prepped for this one.  Afterward, I felt hyped up and didn't follow through.  Now it's been two weeks.

Since then, I've been working on this one and three others simultaneously,  because my thoughts are all mixed up into different posts.  This week I added four more to the list.  My goal was my mid-week indoor break from peopling, but that was side tracked by quake and tsunami news. There's one I really want to get out, but I'm posting this first for flow, and hopefully I'm productive with the rest this weekend.  So much for trying to wean myself off Zoo issues.  I have greatly reduced feeling the need to document everything, but with the Board allowing Tanya Peterson to continue her reign of mismanagement as Director, the continued craziness of bring Pandas here at this time, and the upset of the list of Animal Needs that continue to be ignored, I just don't see that happening in the immediate future.

I started a longer version if this post on the heels of Zoological Society Board Chair Melinda Dunn's announcement that Tanya Peterson would continue as the Zoo's Director.  *I initially wrote a short reaction post to the Chronicle article that broke this decision, but because of specific notation to Peterson's alleged fundraising achievements, I needed to shine a brighter light on those Delusions.  The Lack of Fundraising point alone in my opinion, is one of the main roots of Peterson's mismanagement.

>...the Zoological Society board steadfastly supported Peterson, according to Elena M. Asturias, a former board member who told the Chronicle Peterson "was appreciated for her fundraising abilities."<

Quotes from Board Members who know nothing about the Zoo, are void of worth.  Asturias needs to name specific things, because keeping Orangutans in caged tubes, claiming No Money, certainly does not lend to any fundraising ability.   This quote and the statement below from the article is full of delusion and illusion, as well as ignorace.

> Peterson oversaw renovations of the zoo’s aging chimpanzee and orangutan facilities and the building of a new exhibit for sifakas, a type of lemur from Madagascar.<

Fact: Peterson planned to kick-out Our Chimpanzees, only seeking funds to build them a new home, when she was desperate to save face under public outrage of her plan.

Fact: Peterson never raised funds for the Orangutans, who still live in that "aging" enclosure.  ZERO renovations FOR the Orangutans or to modernize that enclosure have been made.  Tanya Peterson should be fired for her oversee vision of an appropriate Orangutan home.

Fact: The Sifaka build was a Donor Vanity project.  As far as I know, Peterson was not involved in raising any funds for this project.  I was told this was Donor initiated.  Tanya grabbed the check and gave the middle finger to the Chimps, who were waiting for the build on their new home.  That promise was back-burnered, and Sifaka fast-tracked.

I could make additional comments about Donor Locked Funds for Wants Over Needs, which I find disturbing coming from Zoological Society Members.  Supporters of the Zoo should ask what Needs are, before asking for personal Wants.  The Director, Board, and Society Members need to be reminded that the Zoo is not their personal playground.  And before these Members get their panties in a twist, I appreciated the generosity, and I realize this is their money, and they can do with what they want, but don't act like the Zoo needs a Madagascar exhibit, when we have Orangutans living in caged tubes.  That goes for Gardens and Art Installations too.

Sifaka, like Pandas, were not even current Zoo Residents.  So, Like the Chimpanzees, the Orangutans will have to wait, or likely never see a new home built, because Pandas are Peterson's (and whoever else has donated to bring them here) Want.  The Orangutans Thank all you caring and unselfish people.

Director Peterson chased Orangutans for at least five years before getting her self-indulgent hands on them.  At no point did she fundraise to renovate Triple Grotto FOR them, before their arrival, or anytime since.  She allegedly claimed there was No Money.  What was done, was a disgrace, and not one thing FOR them.  All alterations to keep them imprisoned on those concrete islands, in that ancient pit, as she cried No Money for netting, which would have expanded their topical area, allowing for more movement freedom and providing climbing material for their natural behavior.

Tanya Peterson made NO effort to raise a penny for the Orangutans, yet she has gone and allegedly raised near her goal of $20 Million for Pandas.  Pandas don't live at the Zoo, Orangutans do.  It's not only morally void, but should not be allowed to happen.  This selfishness is a big problem, not only with Peterson's rampant mismanagement, but within the Zoological Society, and an extremely important part of why the management structure needs to change.

The Zoo's annual Fundraiser, ZooFest, is basically a big cocktail party for all the Zoological Society mucky-mucks to gather and pat themselves on the back for doing a bang-up job at "managing" the Zoo, while writing checks to ReName Animals that already have names.  Looking at the tax returns, I'm not even sure the amount spent on the party is significant to the amount raised.  That said, my point in bringing up ZooFest is that each year it has a theme.  I have thought in the far past the themes were created around a fundraising goal (Animal Need or Project), but in more recent years (like ten+), the themes have been random, with no focus on Needs.  Last years theme was to praise the outgoing Society Board Chair.  Yep, they blew smoke-up this guy, who had been the Chair for years, allowing and supporting Tanya Peterson's mismanagement.

At NO time in the last dozen+ years was there a theme about the Need to build a new home for the Chimpanzees, so they could get out of the sixty year old Triple Grotto, or for the acquisition of Orangutans, so they could avoid being sentenced to life in the old, outdated, Triple Grotto.

In addition to the Animal Cruelty and Welfare issues that befell Our Orangutans, continuing to keep Triple Grotto in it's current state is a blight on a focal point of the Zoo.  Attention to that exhibit location should have been a priority long ago.

I have witnessed and wondered, for over a decade at least, Why there is NO fundraising at Our Zoo. Tanya Peterson was allegedly a master fundraiser for the Society before becoming Director, but that apparently stopped once she grabbed the reins. The Zoo employed someone whose title was Philanthropy, and job description included Fundraising, yet outside of ZooFest I never heard of any other money pulls or seen any fundraising efforts put forth by the Zoo, aka him or Director Peterson.  This lack of action has left me feeling like neither put any value on creating fundraising efforts geared at anyone outside deep-pocket donors.  There is seemingly no value or recognition given to smaller donations that could be made by members of the public.

There is so much I can write on the lack of fundraising subject, ranging from the Needs that could have been met, to the endless ideas to bring in funds.  That said, I can't do a deep dive into the last sixteen years of Needs and missed opportunities.

Since the beginning of my regular visits, now approaching seventeen years ago, I have had no lack or slack of ideas for raising funds.  One of the main times I had a constant flow was during the Covid shutdowns.  I sat here with a barage of ideas daily.  Some of those ideas came to fruition by other Zoos and even places in our own city. While I watched other Zoos doing anything they seemingly could think of to keep funds flowing in to make-up for lost revenue, I waited for Our SFZoo to do something.  I'm still waiting.  ** Where was Tanya Peterson's fundraising expertise during that time?  All I saw out of her was her Twitter post making a Social Distancing joke out of the Orangutans living in the caged tubes (because of her cruelty).

The only thing I saw out of our Zoo was posting for a general donation ask.  Nothing wrong with asking, but it stopped there.  There was no creative ideas, nothing that gives to get, like opportunities to purchase merchandise or other benefit styled purchases. The general ask, reportedly raised $15k.  I heard that the Animal Keepers were donating.  What I still find outrageous is that Keepers were forced to take pay cuts during the shutdowns, while other top earners, specifically Director Peterson, took no pay cut, and still got bonuses.  Peterson's alone ranged between $20-30,000!!!   Why they get bonuses at all, is beyond me, but during a time when no revenue is being generated, that was disgusting in my opinion and an Abuse of Power.

Ok, I think this has gone long enough.  I think what I've said here is enough to show that anyone who believes Tanya Peterson has gone the distance to continually raise funds for Zoo Needs, needs medication for their delusions.
