Sad News. Columbus Zoo Tiger Dies From Covid

Sadly (for this poor Soul), everyone thinks Covid is over.  The Government has led people to believe that the vaccine is immunity.  They have continued lead communities into the surge yo-yo.  Government has bowed to the self-entitled who boo-hoo about mask fatigue.  They have never been strong in enforcement, and now have reduced even further with the obvious position that they don't care if anyone gets sick or dies, just don't clog the hospitals.  And then there are the masses of asses who never thought Covid was a valid thing, so never followed good hygiene precautions, never wore masks, and rebelled against any requests to adhere to requested protocols.

Masking mandates for inside stores, especially those with food, should have never been removed.  Now we have even more people not only up our asses heavy breathing next us with no mask, but coughing all over without covering their mouth.  The free coughers have multiplied in the wake of mask removal.  No one covers their mouth.  They got used to not having to?  and that has carried over.  Think twice about how to handle your fresh produce people!  Even with masks during the start of pandemic, there was never any respect to distancing by others, you had to just make sure you kept your distance.  Everything was on us to keep ourselves safe.  There was never, as the tagline was touted, "We are in this together".  No, we have always been left to fend for ourselves. 

Unfortunately captive Animals are at the mercy of the establishments they live in and their caregivers. 

Unfortunately Zoo's have decided to follow State and Local Health Department guidelines, not only for visitors but for staff.  I have written much about SFZoo policies in regard to masking during the past two years.  I gave up because they too follow Government guidelines.   I'm not going to change their position, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to be vocal that I think this is a big mistake and a negligent one. 

I have thought this since the change over a month ago, it could have been longer.  I may not have written about it, but reading this news I think it's important to document, that safety for those in captive care is still important.  Regardless of what Government guidelines are, protocols for those working with Animals, and for those visiting the enclosures of Covid Vulnerable Species, should not have changed at all.  Government Guidelines are for Humans and the areas they move about in.  That does not include areas where vulnerable species live.   Zoo's can dictate their own safety guidelines.  That is, if they want to.  If they care to keep the non-humans in their care safe.

I have seen a mash-up in regards to safety for vulnerable species at our SFZoo.  There is absolutely NO mask requirement for visitors at enclosure areas.  I have seen Animal Care Staff passing by those areas without a mask as well.  I have seen Keepers wearing a mask when interacting with the Animals, in areas visible to the public.  I do not know what the overall current protocol is, as early in the change, I did hear it was allegedly the Keepers choice.   That all said, I was very disappointed to learn Keepers who have been potentially exposed to Covid have been allowed to come to work.

In addition to masking flexibility, there should also be a concern for hygiene protocol.  While Keeper's (not specifically SFZoo) personal hygiene protocol may be lax, it can not be when touching food or other items used by the Animals.   All the captive Animals who have lost their lives to Covid, contracted it from somewhere.  All reports noted that Keepers follow safety protocol.  Again, they got it from somewhere.  There was and still is a factor that is causing infection. Whether that is lack of extreme hygiene protocol, lack of mask wearing by care staff, or by public, Covid is not over.  Animals can not wear masks.  Zoo's need to take every precaution to prevent innocents from losing their lives.

"Very sad and preventable".

Park Sprinklers Flood Path - Not A Drop For The Bison - Fans Speak Out!

I monitored the Bison Cam all day yesterday, and didn't see sprinklers.   Today I've done the same, in addition to going by twice.  No Water for the Bison Paddock?  YET there was a row of nine sprinklers on Chain of Lakes between MLK and the Horse Corral.  Grass there is sure a hell of a lot greener than in the Bison and Rec/Park kept them on to the point where they were flooding the path and into the street.  This is the main point of this post.  

This is the kind of shit that pisses me off.   

I do want to reiterate that this is a supplemental vegetation issue, that is the responsibility of the SF Rec and Park.  The Rec and Park are required to maintain the enclosure, which means keeping the vegetation healthy.  The Rec and Park control the sprinkler system.  This is solely on them. ... The Bison are healthy and well taken care of by SFZoo Animal Care Staff.  They are fed daily and given extra food to compensate for what they are not getting from grazing.  They are not going hungry.  That said, they do need that green vegetation, not only for extra intake and but because grazing is part of their natural behavior.   It's what they do and that needs to be replicated in a captive environment.

The Sprinklers in the Bison need to be on everyday till there is green in that whole meadow.  I noted previously that a gardener told me the sprinklers were on a timer.  I don't care what time they go on, my question is What day, week or month can the Bison Paddock expect some attention to this situation?  The Rec/Park need to be transparent with the sprinkler schedule.

I have not heard back from anyone in the Rec and Park system.  I contacted a few other City Officials and asked, What can you do to help the Bison?  .... I'm waiting.

When I think about the Park Commission, I think about the Joint Zoo Committee Meetings I used to go to.  There are three Commissioners on that panel.  One time that has forever stuck in my mind is when I saw Zoo Director Tanya Peterson, and a Commissioner, literally patting each-other on the back.  If Tanya is so buddy buddy with the Rec and Park, I sure hope she is trying to remedy this vegetation situation.

No Charges In Lemur Theft - "Suspect" Released.

What is going on with our justice system?

THIS is absolutely unacceptable!  These days it just seems to be one head shaker after another.

I'm suprised at this news, but not shocked.  The New Years Eve hit and run at 2nd and Mission, was a topic on yesterday's talk radio shows.  The perpetrator in that crime, is a career criminal, who has repeatedly been released from jail.  According to this news article, at one one point he had enough charges for a life sentence.  Yet he was again set free and went on to kill someone New Years Eve.

So after hearing about this outrageousness, I am not shocked that once again the justice system has failed.  The City sure isn't doing a very good job with the messages they are sending, from any angle.  

Releasing another repeat offender, and someone whose actions have caused harm to another Being, is Disturbing and disappointing.  Maki luckily was not physically harmed but he suffered emotionally, and so did his "family" as they watched a stranger come into their bedroom and kidnap one of them.

This guy Tresspassed onto Zoo property, Broke into the Lemur enclosure, and Kidnapped Maki.  In my mind, those are three crimes, and there is no excuse for there to be no charges brought and no jail time served.

Would this guy have been released if he had kidnapped a human?  

I sure hope the Zoo can go after this guy legally is some way.  I'm sick of people messing with Animals and getting away with it.

Appeal To Whoever Stole Maki The Lemur - Read This!

I obviously don't know the motive behind this cruel crime, but I would bet the perpetrator does not know how to care for Lemurs.  I can only hope they care enough to keep him healthy and safe.

Was he taken to be a Pet?  To be sold into the Exotic Wildlife Trade?  Whatever the reason, caring for and feeding any Animal is an individual and delicate plan.  In Maki's case whoever has him, must know by now, he is of advanced age, which is even more concern that he is properly cared for.

Zoo's work close with Duke Lemur Center.  This page from their website refers to reasons why Lemurs do not make good Pets.  Below link I've copied some relevant text excerpts.

Caring for lemurs is hard work every day

... Even providing a lemur with a proper daily diet is complicated. Owners occasionally contact us, already having purchased a pet lemur, with no idea what to feed it. In one case, the owners of a ring-tailed lemur named Milo were feeding him pizza and ice cream. In a reality television show filmed in eastern North Carolina, a lemur is shown eating a slice of bacon.

That pet lemurs tend to have serious nutritional problems from being fed inappropriate diets exacerbates the problem of limited access to qualified veterinary care. Unfortunately this can lead to privately-held pet lemurs developing a host of illnesses, including obesity and diabetes, and dying prematurely.

AZA President Admits Ndume Left at TGF, Knowing Not In His Best Interest - (Non-SFZoo)

Great read from AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) President, Dan Ashe.  He admits what I've been saying all along, that the Cincinnati Zoo ( the AZA, and the Gorilla SSP) left Ndume at The Gorilla Foundation for reasons that were best for Koko, NOT Ndume!  This has always hurt my heart for Ndume. Just sick that this was allowed to knowingly happen to him and lasted near three decades. Its almost worse hearing the admittance. They knew it wasn't best for him. They KNEW it was not in HIS best interest.  As a senior himself, Ndume could have died there at The Gorilla Foundation before Koko and never had the life he should have.  They robbed Ndume of a Gorilla Family of his own for 28 years of his life, so Koko could possibly catch a glimpse of another Gorilla from time to time. Unconscionable!  A moral crime.  I applaud them for going the distance and doing the right thing now, but they are damn lucky he survived her and is here for them to able to give him the life he has always deserved. Shame on them all for the past.  They better jump through hoops for him from here on out!

Orangutan Update - Is Female Already Here? - Still No Work Being Done at Triple Grotto

After posting late last Friday, I felt a rush of emotion and cried.  It appears, the Orangutans will be living in Triple Grotto as is, and that's incredibly sad to me.  I often wonder with how upset I get over Zoo issues, does anyone who works at the Zoo ever shed any tears about the way things are done?

I thought the Madagascar post I've been putting off for what is now a year, had factors that encompassed the core that is wrong with the way our San Francisco Zoo is managed, but, sadly there are issues that are even worse.  The hoarding and housing of Animals that there are no appropriate living spaces for is beyond upsetting.  Its frustrating because it would seem that some level of moral compassion would be in play, but the list of Animals that have been affected by decisions without empathy, seems to continue growing.  

As I pointed out in my last post, from what I can see, there is currently no appropriate place to house Orangutans.  That may change in the coming months, but today, no such place exists at the Zoo.  

I also wrote about Ollie the male who is on the way.  The news of his move from Erie Zoo to SFZoo was the catalyst for my two Orangutan posts, as I, like so many others, including Zoo Staff, were surprised that the Zoo was acquiring Orangutans at this time.  A time when the new Chimpanzee Yard is still not finished, a time when the former Chimpanzee/future Orangutan enclosure has had no renovation work done on it, which together with the Madagascar build and Snow Leopard expansion, make four construction projects in the works at once.  

People have asked me, and the consensus was that same lead in question, in addition to my other question,  What is the rush?  Why is Ollie, being moved at this time?  The Erie Zoo noted there was up to a year before there would be issues with being housed with his Father.  So Why right now?  Why not in a month? or two or three?  When the Yard might be done, as well as something updated in Triple Grotto?

That question is even more of an issue now, not only with Ollie, but as rumor has it, the Female Orangutan is already in SFZoo quarantine!   I was sick to hear this and hoped someone would come to their senses and not transfer these poor Animals yet, ... silly me.   So now, the question expands to, Why were either of these Animals moved from established homes to a place with no appropriate home for them?  

While we ask, What is the rush?  An equally important question is, Who's pushing for this prematurely?  Is it our Director, and/or the AZA/Orangutan SSP?  It has to be a high level decision maker and that only leaves those two.  Director Peterson allegedly dictates everything at the Zoo, but allegedly the AZA/SSP make it known that Zoos should follow their suggestions or face consequences.  I would bet that there are more than a few people in Animal Care that aren't too happy with what's going on with the Orangutans.  

I wondered in my last post if they were going to just toss the Orangutans into Triple Grotto as is, even though it was deemed unfit for the AZA to send the Zoo more Chimpanzees.  I now wonder if that isn't a pretty spot on assumption, so that the Zoo could have something new to deflect from all the other construction going on?

I usually visit the Zoo three times a week.  Last week was no different.  Not one of the days did I see or hear any work being done in Triple Grotto.  As well, there didn't seem to be anything new added in the area of the new Yard or in the process of building the new Skytrail.  So, again, Where Will the Orangutans Go?  Sadly, I fear they will go to quarantine and stay there past the usual 30 days.

It shows our Chimps and the status of Triple Grotto.  Since they are closed out of the Triple Grotto, they only have the Skytrail as outdoor access.  This will not change until the new Yard is finished.  The new Yard appears to be no where near done.  Triple Grotto shows no signs of renovation for Orangutans.

I took a good look at the Pachyderm Building and it seems there would have been space on the other side of the wall from the new Yard to build additional bedrooms for the Orangutans, without interfering with or displacing (which should never happen) Gauhati the Asian Rhino, who lives in the Pachyderm Building.  So, that's the other question, why were additional bedrooms not built there or at South Grotto, so the Orangutans had new night quarters?   If they had new night quarters and the new Yard was done, this wouldn't be as tragic as it appears.

There seems to be alot of questions Why? surrounding the timing of the Orangutans arrival, and what to do with them when quarantine is over.  Its very curious why the whole Orangutan situation is being kept so secret.  Even though the Erie Zoo made their announcement over a month ago, SFZoo has yet to mention it.  I applaud Erie Zoo as they wanted to let their community know, and those who love Ollie could visit him before he left.  At the SFZoo, you just show up one day and an Animal is gone. ...  I have to wonder if it isn't because they know the timing of this is not right for the Animals? and they don't want outside opinions about it!

World Bonobo Day - Update on Bili at Wuppertal Zoo

Valentines Day was also World Bonobo Day.  Fitting, as over 300,000 caring people have signed Petitions showing their Love and Concern for Bili.  I hope one day, Bili will feel loved, because right now, it sure doesn't seem like he does.

For those following Bili's story, I wanted to post an update.  When I last posted, Bili was by all accounts still being forced to stay in the Wuppertal Zoo Bonobo Group full-time, and left victim to the Zoo's "process" of integration, which included repeated attacks.  His flesh was ripped open, half his ear ripped off, and other reports of serious injury, without intervention from Zoo staff.  Concerns were raised last month via Petition, resulting in public outrage, many news stories, and an offer by Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary (WAMS) to give Bili a forever home. Bili was being brutalized, and most empathetic and compassionate people wanted him removed from the Zoo and placed somewhere safe.

At the time of my last post, WAMS representatives were on their way to Wuppertal, and an agreed meeting with Officials.  Entering into a meeting, was assumed that a discussion about possibly releasing him to Sanctuary was an option.  When WAMS got there, it was a very different situation.  The Zoo made a public statement against WAMS, basically never having any intention of entertaining the idea of releasing him.  That was Sunday 2.10.19. Bili remains there today.

This video, taken three days later, Wednesday 2.13.19, shows Bili in a seemingly relaxed state, together with one other Bonobo named Mato, who was reportedly the only one who didn't attack him.  They are separated from the group.  It is unknown how long they will be separated or how often.  The public must rely on Visitor photos and video to assess what's going on.  Prior to this, there were no reports of Bili being separated, but instead repeatedly forced to "integrate" into the group, and being brutally attacked every time.  I believe this separation, is the result of public outrage, to both the Petitions, letter writing, and media attention.

There are still concerns for Bili's safety and long-range stay at Wuppertal.  There has been exchanges by many, myself included, with Zoo Officials, and the EAZA.  The Zoo, EAZA, and WAZA have all issued statements regarding Bili.  They maintain they will never send him to Sanctuary, stating that WAMS (and that would probably mean other Sanctuaries) are not fit to house Bonobos because they have never worked with them, and currently do not house them.  I personally don't agree with this mindset, as it would seem to me, that providing a safe place for a Being rather than killing it, or watching it be killed would be the way to go.  Silly me! ... They maintain they are confident in their introduction process, which is formed by "Professionals and Experts".  Considering by all accounts they have no off exhibit space, there doesn't seem to be much of a space for monitored and barriered introductions.  I asked and they have not answered questions regarding what that process is. ... Many have asked, how long they will continue to try to integrate him, and how brutalized does Bili have to get before they intervene?  Considering they never intervened when he was having his flesh ripped open before, I think that's a valid question. They have not answered these questions. ... Bili was sent there for breeding, I questioned what will happen to Bili if he doesn't breed?  Will he be deemed surplus and killed, as that is a common practice in EAZA Zoos.  They didn't answer. ... Wuppertal Zoo Director has stated he would euthanize Bili if he didn't integrate and do the same, before he would send him to Sanctuary.  The EAZA stated he would never be euthanized.   I asked them to respond to the Director's words, they have not.

Zoo ReNames New Chimp - Qadeer becomes Gombo - Sad

This post was in a "coming soon" post that I never got back to.  So I'm bumping it up in a new post and for anyone who's following, the previous post will be re-titled, as it contains links to all the Chimp fun from the first day our Cobby, Minnie and Maggie came face-too-face with Visitors in the new Playroom.  I'll link the old post at the end of this one, in case anyone missed it. 

So, lots has happened with our new Chimp Friend Qadeer, since I posted about his arrival.  A couple weeks ago, he gained access to the Dayroom, and last week, came face-to-face with his new Friends!  I will make a couple separate posts to highlight those exciting adventures!

So yea, the Zoo felt it necessary to sell the rights to rename Qadeer.  I knew this would happen. So predictable.  I hate the renaming thing, and renaming a Great Ape who knows his name, just awful. 

So in exchange of money, after 33 years Qadeer is now named Gombo.  Sad.

Well, I at least hoped the person tried to give him a native related name, and not a celebrity or vanity name, but where I thought I initially read there was an African relation to the name, I have done some research and now find nothing other than its another name for Gumbo, the Creole food dish.  So yea, Zoo allowed someone to rename Qadeer after food.  I did find that Qadeer means Powerful and Capable. ...  Maybe there was a mistake and they meant Gombe, which is relatable to a native region.  But still, there it is in print, Gombo.  Sad. 

I've written alot on name changing.  It's one of my biggest and long running issues.  It just really bothers me.  I may be alone in this, but I think its disrespectful.  I understand it from a fundraising angle, but I wish the Zoo would be more creative and find other ways to raise money.  Putting a sign up that says this Animals care has been sponsored by,... would be better and more prominent than changing a name.  Aside from the disrespect, I think it messes the Animals up.   I have heard that in more recent years than when I first start writing about it, the real names are being used by the Keepers.  But, that hasn't always been true.  For example, and I loved this girl, so my heart really broke for her in this regard.  When the Zoo acquired female Siberian/Amur Tiger Shastyuh RIP, her Keeper at the time continued to use her real name, even though at ten yrs old she had been renamed Martha.  When that Keeper left, remaining staff were forced to use Martha.  I always use their really names.  When I would talk to Shastyuh she knew.  Once I was talking to her and I heard a Keeper from inside trying to call her in.   Martha, Martha, Martha-Shastyuh, ... ridiculous.  Shastyuh never went in and just sat there and stuck her tongue out lol!  Glad it wasn't an emergency that they needed to call her in for.  And our Leanne (Tiger), who used to be called her real name Skylar by that previous Keeper, exclusively became Leanne.  She doesn't even look when you say Hi Sky anymore.  Identity lost.  And poor Tucker (Hippo), he's been renamed twice!  Both times after ballplayers, using both first and last names. UG.  Anyway those are just a few irritations. Also, before I stop with this, let's wonder what happens to Animals that then get transferred out. Thankfully our Bali RIP (Tiger) who SFZoo called George, was still under the care of the Keeper who used real names, because when he moved to another Zoo, they went back to calling him Bali.  But, what happens with our Bronevik (Tiger) who just moved to Omaha.  At 5 yrs old, he too knew his name but was renamed, JT.  I don't know what Keepers called him, but I sure hope he retained his name of Bronevik and will hold on to it in Omaha.  And last the biggest disrespect of all, hands down in Zoo history, poor Falcor RIP (Komodo Dragon) at two yrs old, he knew his name, yet was renamed Big Daddy Bahasa.  Big Daddy, NO ANIMAL should be called Big Daddy anything.  Just awful.  And Bahasa, literally means the word language in Indonesian.  So from Falcor, a nod to the Dragon in the classic movie The Never Ending Story, to Big Daddy Language.  Seriously, at the very least the Zoo and his Keepers could have referred to him as Bahasa, but NO, everything was Big Daddy this, Big Daddy that.  So Awful and Sad that poor Falcor had to hear that constantly, and literally on loop in the video outside his home.  RIP My Friend, at least you don't have to hear that anymore.  Heartbreaking. 

I would suggest that if the Zoo is going to continue to sell off naming rights, some guidelines be attached to the privilege, like no celebrity names, no multiple names (first and last included), basically no joke names, BUT the Zoo itself changes names of Animals that don't even follow those guidelines, for example the male Black Howler Monkey.  His name is Benjamin and was renamed by the Zoo, Robin Williams.  Ridiculous.  Why?  Like ballplayer names, most likely for fleeting media attention.  UG.  Others come to mind, but I can't even. 

I just want to make another notation about renaming Animals.  Since this post is about a Chimpanzee, I'll make the example keeping with that, but it relate to any Animal.  

I've written about my history with the Zoo before, but in short, after long life of visiting the Zoo, in 2008, my visits increased and I started to learn more about the Animals as individuals.  In addition to talking with Keepers to learn their names and about their lives at the time, I did my own research with included, internet searches by name, genealogy using studbooks, reading every SFZoo related article in the sfgate archive and every Joint Zoo Committee Meeting Agenda and Minutes.  I'm pretty thorough when researching something I'm passionate about and I had become so endeared to the Animals, that knowing about them was important.  

For this example, I'm going to use our Chimpanzee Cobby.  Cobby is the longest living Resident at the Zoo.  Cobby came to the Zoo at ten years old, so he had a life before the SFZoo.  SFZoo was the first and only home of our Maggie and Minnie. If Cobby's name had been changed, I would have never learned about his life before the Zoo.  I would not have learned, after he was taken from the wild, he lived with a human family.  He worked in entertainment.  He had his own tv show.  He ended up at the Zoo, when he aged out and his humans wanted to work with Elephants instead.  I love this guy, and even though I didn't know his history til 2008, I've known him my whole life, and because of this time in my life when the universe has chosen the Zoo as one of my final passions,  I know who Cobby is.   

In my opinion, changing an Animals name robs them of their identity, and robs those who become endeared to them, the chance to learn more about them.

NEWS FLASH! Ndume is Going Back to Cincinnati!

My internet was down for 40 minutes.  Before it went out, I briefly saw a news article come into my email via alert, Judge, Gorilla, ...  When my internet finally connected, I quickly posted my blog posts.  Then went back to read this article,

Whoot!  Thankfully, Ndume doesn't have to live a life of isolation much longer.  

The only thing left to say about this is, I certainly hope Cincinnati Zoo gets a team on the ground to The Gorilla Foundation (TGF) as soon as possible. There have been many concerns for Ndume's safety there if this outcome did not go Penny Patterson's  (TGF) way.  I will not breathe relief until Cincinnati Zoo has eye's on Ndume, who hasn't been seen in months on TGF Social Media and he is out of there.

Penny Patterson, Ron Cohn, Gary Stanley, and all at The Gorilla Foundation.  The World is watching,  play nice, do what's best for Ndume, and make this move easy for him.

My Soul Is Weeping - RIP Paddy ... RIP Falcor - The Loss of Two Friends Today

I write this through sobbing tears.  I haven't posted about Zoo Friends passing in many years.  Today has been devastating.  

I woke up to the news that my dearest Farm Friend Paddy passed away.  My heart was broken.  Paddy was my bestie.  We spent so much time hanging out, having walks, and treats and many hugs.  I could go on, as I have known Paddy many many years, filled with many special memories, but the point of this post isn't to pour my heart out about how much I loved him and our time together. He knew how I felt about him.  A senior, as time went on, every visit with him was a cherished blessing. The Farm won't be the same without him.  For those who don't know Paddy, he was born at the Farm, the longest living Goat. I looked forward to celebrating his 18th Birthday with him in June.  Bless you my Friend.  I Love You and will miss you.

I sobbed all day.  Devastated at the loss of my Paddy.  Hard to believe I would never see him again. Sad there would be no more Paddy hugs and seeing his smiling face.  When I woke from a nap not long ago, feeling nauseous and sad, I had to break the news to a friend, now that she was home from work.  She also loved Paddy.  With tears streaming I typed the words. As we exchanged messages about how much we loved Paddy, another friend messaged me, Falcor (Komodo Dragon) died.  My heart was crushed again.

I have written many posts about Falcor.  I loved this little guy since before he got here.  He was another one of my besties.  I may not have been hands on with him like with Paddy, but he had my heart and I know he knew me.  I spent alot of time with him, especially when he was still living in that awful terrarium.  He would come to the window for face-time and I would often open the door so he could see the outdoor world.  We would just hang-out while he looked outside.  I am heartbroken he is gone.  We spent alot of time together and very sad, I won't see his little face again or look into his eyes and smile at him.  I knew he was having some health trouble.  I have been worried and have been saying prayers all week for him. When I saw him Tuesday, his head was slumped on the ground, eyes closed and he had a sad look on his face.  Hard to see.  I came back around to check on him and his eyes were open.  He saw me and lifted his head up in my direction.  I was so happy to see him be alert.  Thankful for this last eye contact with him. This has been a truly gut-wrenching and devastating day.  

For those who haven't followed Falcor's story, you can search his name on this blog.  I don't want to get into it all, but its not secret I have never felt he was respected at the Zoo.  It started with the name they gave him.  At least he won't have to hear being called Big Daddy ever again.  They waited too long to do something about his injury.  He was forced to live in an inadequate home for too long, possibly hindering his growth and the progress of his surgery rehabilitation.  Finally getting a proper home, I think he had some time of happiness in his short sad life at the Zoo.   Bless you My Friend.  I Love You and will miss you.  

The tears won't stop.  The frown won't leave my face.  I Miss My Friends.   

The person who messaged me about Falcor's passing, saw it on Facebook.  I don't look at the Zoo's FB, but went there to see what they had written and also to confirm what I knew in my heart, they didn't mention Paddy's passing at all.   No surprise, like with whose Birthday they mention, they pick whose passing to mention.  As if the loss isn't hard enough, it makes me feel incredibly sad that all Animals are not given equal recognition.  That was the purpose of this post.  Shameful.

Bear Enclosure Renovation Update

I took a video on Friday of the improvements the Zoo has made to the Polar Bear enclosure, for the arrival of the Black Bear Cubs    https://youtu.be/jS3sw6OYJqc

You will see that three parts of the concrete areas have had dirt added to them and tree branches have been added around the pool and moat walls, I guess to deter them from going on/falling over.  Looks like some of the railings have been replaced, yet no sign of any deterrent for human's hanging over them.

You will see below the Zoo is calling this enclosure Black Bear Bluff.  Huh.  ... As I wrote in my previous post, I sure hope these Bears will eventually be getting a proper home built to live out the next 20-30+ years of their lives.  ... There has been rumor that the Zoo has plans to build a new Polar Bear Enclosure out to the west side of Gorillas. Considering we no longer have Polar Bears, I hope those plans are now on hold until these Bears get a new enclosure.  Giving these babies a home was a wonderful thing.  Hoping they will be done right by for years to come. 

Interesting timing gave me a chuckle.  I finally got my post about the Cubs out on Friday morning, and then the Zoo finally posts about them on their Facebook late that afternoon.  I only look at the Zoo FB and Twitter maybe once a week, sometimes every two weeks, but I checked it out that night since I had a feeling once I did, they were sure to follow.  What were they waiting for?

No News Update

It may seem like I have dropped the ball on updating about my Membership Crime, I haven't, there is just no news to report.   I still have no Membership in my name and I still continue to visit the Zoo regularly.

I never recieved a responce to my request to have my Membership fees returned via mail along with a detailed letter of reasoning.  One might think, there is no letter because there is no valid (or truthful) reasoning.

Aside from the two weeks following the "denied membership" news, I have visited the Zoo at least a couple times a week.  I had other life stuff to take care of, so took that opportunity those two weeks to do so and avoid any possible drama.  Aside from no Membership, nothing has changed for me.  I'm not conducting myself in any different manner. I haven't done anything wrong. I go there for the Animals.  Visiting them feeds my soul.  When I'm there, I keep an eye on things and if I see something that's not right, I'm gonna speak out about it.  There is nothing wrong with that and anyone who thinks there is, doesn't care about the lives of the Animals that are in the Zoo's care.

I do want to note a few things about behavior, not mine but that of some Staff.  This of course has nothing to do with any Staffer that I know and talk to (they know who they are), but about the Cowards who flip back and forth with their behavior towards me.  When Director Peterson revoked the memberships of myself and my friend Lee in 2011, a very small percentage of Staff still spoke to us afterward.  Most of those who did, I still speak to today and I've always appreciated their support and ability to keep their eyes open despite the adversity they deal with there.   The others treated us like criminals and we were followed while there.  These were people who believe lies, and/or were threatened with termination.  It was interesting, rather disgusting, that once we got our memberships back, there was a complete turn around in behavior towards us.  Its been six years, one would think the added years and my dedication to the Animals would make a difference, it doesn't.  I have again felt the chill by some.

  

I understand if someone doesn't want to become Tanya's target by associating themselves with the apparent controversy that is Me, but I have a real problem with anyone who works in Animal Care that doesn't put themselves on the line for the Animals in their care.  I am sorta digressing here, but I have heard things that have been upsetting.  I know there are Keepers of strong character, who will stand up for the Animals.  Most recent Dayna, who made the plight of Jesse-Patrick, the young Patas Monkey in her care public.  I will always admire her for that, because I know she made herself vulnerable by doing so.  I know there are Keepers there who did not support her and because of that, I know they would not do the same, and that disturbs me.  That there are Keepers, so afraid to say anything that goes against what management says, that even an Animal's health would be in jeopardy, is a real problem for me.  I find it disturbing and unethical.

I mention the above, because I care about the Animals. That is why I will continue to be a voice for them.  That said, I guess I will continue to be a thorn in Director Peterson's side, because I Advocate for the Animals. Caring shouldn't be a bad thing, but apparently in San Francisco Zoo Management circles it is.  That is the only thing they can pin on me.



Chimp Update - Series Part Three of Three

I was told, the Chimp work would start the day after the Flamingos were done.  I was anxious to see, and I was completely surprised, as that is exactly what's happened!  Work on the interior of the Pachyderm Building started February 15th!

A couple months ago I heard a few ideas about what was going to happen, but a few days before construction started, I got details as to what exactly was going to happen in this first phase of the project.  I was So Happy! for Our Chimp Friends, I cried after hearing the plans.  I'm just so happy that they are here and they will get this new experience, because I was able to be their voice and didn't give up on them.

In the video you will hear me say, "a few years" in reference to how long it would be for the current phase of the Project.  I may have been confused with that timeline.  I had just gotten this clarity of the plan, and I decided to make this video on the spot.  I was working out the timing, as I was narrating, considering past timelines for Sifakas, as well the previously predicted start of Chimps, and how those estimations were pushed farther out. So, I really have no idea how long it will actually take, but in hindsight, I'd think the estimation for the whole project, both Pachyderm inside/outside and Triple Grotto renovation, shouldn't take more than three years.  That is providing the Zoo does not (and should not!) acquire any new Animals that will require new Exhibits.  If they do continue that trend after finally getting to the Chimps Needs, then there is something seriously wrong with their compassion for these long-time Residents.  There will be no excuse.  The only excuse I would find acceptable would be for a simultaneous build of the much needed new Komodo Dragon Exhibit that was promised to him within two years of his arrival, which was over three years ago and/or a Rescue that had no other option than being Euthanized. 

So, as I understand it, this is a Three, possibly Four Phase Project.  

First, Pachyderm inside remodel.  Visitor Viewing and Indoor Playroom.  Multiple Room Housing.

Second, Sky Trail from Pachyderm into North Grotto exhisting Housing..

So there it is folks, FINALLY!  After exactly two years today, something is happening that will ensure these Precious Babies will be able to live out their lives in the only home they have ever known.  They will have new Friends, and new Environments.  So much to Enrich their lives!  I can't wait!  ... Tearing again!

Chimp Updates - Series Part Two of Three

So, what has taken so long?  What's been going on at the Zoo in the past two years?  I'll tell you.  A whole lot of nothing, ... for the Chimps.

I realize that there has been no update for over a year.  The reason for that, other than the energy it takes to write about every issue point, is that there really hasn't been anything to report as far as Our Chimp Friends getting what's been promised to them. ... Till now :)

So yeah, here we go.  So let's recap.  At the February Joint Zoo Meeting, after the airing of the News Story and public outcry, Zoo Director Tanya Peterson committs to keeping the Chimps. She showed a photo of an exhibit that would cost $10 Million and no money for it.  She noted adding Sky Trails to Pachyderm Building as a start to creating more space, which would be needed to bring in more Chimps, which as we know is key to the situation. She admitted (as I had been posting about) that this was a time sensitive situation, in regard to our group size being a factor point.  She further noted they would be launching the biggest fundraising effort they've ever done (for her 10 mil dream of grandeur). ... Shortly after this Meeting the Zoo set-up a Donation page to Help the Chimps.  This page was only promoted by the Zoo once, and side mentioned a second time. From what I've learned, allegedly no other great efforts towards the Chimps Needs was taken, even though there has since been two ZooFest fundraisers. ... Director Peterson came into the March Meeting with words of encouragement and diagrams of plans.  Yet when I questioned her on a timeline, there wasn't one, and when asking if our group number reduced, were the remaining two secure, her response was first no, they could be sent away, or yes, they could rescue additional Chimps.  The later would mean they would possibly lose AZA accreditation. ... Over the next couple months, I read 250k had been marked for upgrades to current Grottos, yet nothing much changed.  One old structure got repainted, one got repaired.  Both not an upgrade, but over due maintance. ... By the July Meeting, there still was no further mention of the Chimps. I asked at the Meeting what the timeline was for the Pachyderm/Sky Trail expansion and was told it would be done in Fall of 2016.  ... Upset and Frustrated with that timeline, I questioned Director Peterson at the August Meeting as to why the Chimps were on hold while building for new Animals when they are current Residents in need.  She had no valid answers.  

Ever since she said if our numbers reduce the remaining two could be sent away, I have not felt secure in their place, being able to live out their lives here.  Knowing that she was trying to kick them out basically in the dark of the night, in favor of allegedly bringing in Orangutans, I wasn't convinced she wasn't "waiting them out".  I hate to think that, but let's look at the above facts, together with her descison to bring in new Animals and build them new Exhibits, before starting anything for the Chimps.

By October 2015, with still nothing different for the Chimps, I wrote a detailed letter to the AZA, as the Zoo was up for an Accreditation inspection.  It was not as an intention to prevent them being accredited, but to alert to certain things that go on there, as well as call attention the needs of the Chimps, as well as the poor Komodo Dragon.  I will write a post soon about him.  It will be posted to my other blog, please look for it there.  ... My letter included noting that their home has chipping paint and hasn't been painted in over a decade if not two, their lack of Enrichment, and links to four videos I made that included suggestions to expand/improve the Chimps Environment.  Doable solutions to the situation.  That being, the need for the Chimps home at the Zoo to be secure, need to add more Chimps, lack of large funding.  In my opinion, grandeur is uneccessary at this point.  The Sky Trail/Pachyderm Expansion and my other ideas, including painting their home, would be sufficient to give them what they need.  Sure more would be wonderful, but my main concern has always been securing their future and bringing more Enrichment to their life.

Between Fall of 2015 and Summer 2016, I continually asked most of the people I know, in various departments, about the Chimp plans.  Every said, "It's happening", but no one knew what or when. And there were allegedly no work orders for the Chimps yet.  Very upsetting as time ticked on.

Someone asked me, what happened to all the money that they got for the Chimps and why it was taking so long for them to get what they needed.  I said, I don't know.   Its been two years since the News story and the launch of their Help the Chimps donation page on their website.  There has been no updates coming out of the Zoo.  They have not even provided an update to those who donated to the Chimps via their website.  In my opinion they have an obligatation to keep people in the loop.and I find it really irresponsible to the donors not providing updates and I find it irresponsible to the Chimps for not taking care of their needs in a more timely manner. 

In June, the new Exhibit for Mexican Grey Wolves opened.  In August, the new Exhibit for Sifaka Lemurs opened.  Don't get me wrong, I love these Animals and feel lucky to be able to experience them and any new Animal.  That said, I do think there are ways to prioritize that our Director and Management team do not consider.  I think considering the Chimps have lived at the Zoo almost fifty years and have been waiting thirty for a new home, are the longest and oldest Residents at the Zoo, that should count for some position of priority.  One they have shamefully, never recieved.  When I questioned this, I was told that a donor came forward with money specifically for Sifaka's.  Basically they took the money and said Yes, and made it happen pronto.  Me, I would have said, Thank you, we would love to have Sifaka's but we have a current situation that needs immediate attention, after that, we will plan to add Sikafa to the collection.  Same with acquiring Wolves.  I don't know for a fact, but I can only guess their fast tracking of them was to use the Exhibit area that was left vacant after Polar Bear Pike passed away.

Last Fall, 2016, a crew started working in the side path entrance to the Pachyderm Building, the site where the new Chimp Rooms are going to be built.  Finally it looked like something was happening. At the same time, barriers were being renovated at Flamingos.  The side path re-opened and the Pachyderm Building doors were closed, and crews gone.  It wasn't until the week the Flamingos were to be done, that I would get any further information about the Chimps.

Chimp Updates - Series Part One of Three

Today marks two years since the News story on our Chimpanzees aired.  If you aren't familiar with what led up to this, my first in the series of update posts will synopsis it and include some links.

The San Francisco Zoo is my hometown Zoo.  I grew up going to the Zoo.  In early 2008, my handful of visits a month, turned into a handful of visits a week.  I made aquaintance with Staff and through that and my own extensive online research, I learned as much as I could about the Animals as individuls as I could.  I started my first blog to share what I was learning.  I became further endeared, I became involved in Enrichment, I became a champion for them.  If I saw something questionable, I asked about it.  I had an open dialog with many there.  That changed in 2011 and at that point I started documenting those questionable points in another blog.  

I was behind in updating my blog, and had several posts about the Chimps in the works.  They had been slighted by the Zoo for decades.  Their home was in desperate need of a make-over.  They sat in the same structures for almost thirty years.  Paint chipping on those structures and their night quarter building.  They had little Enrichment.  They were the longest living Residents of the Zoo and basically got nothing.  My heart broke for them everytime I saw them.  I grew up with these babies and they are special to me.  

In the later part of 2014, I was contacted by Filmmakers from Australia who grew up watching our Cobby Chimpanzee's television show.  After extensive talks, they decided to make a Documentry about his life and planned a trip to visit Cobby.   I didn't want to call attention to the Chimps in anyway, until after their visit, so I held off posting about their situtation.

By the New Year 2015,  after I published my posts, I got wind that the San Francisco Zoo Director Tanya Peterson was kicking the Chimps out, allegedly in favor of hoping to bring in Orangutans.  I was outraged and sickend that these babies who had lived at the Zoo their whole lives, nearing fifty years!, would be darted, crated and wake up in surroundings they were unfamiliar with.  They shouldn't have to, they gave the Zoo their Life, the Zoo needed to give them what they deserved.   

One Staffer asked me point blank, What are you going to do about it?  I said, "Everything I can, because these babies are not leaving on my watch!"  If it turned out they did, it would have not been without the loudest Roar I could make.  I'm crying thinking back to that moment and what it would have meant if they had to leave the only home they ever knew.   I felt they would not survive a change and journey like this.  One Staffer later thanked me, "You saved their Lives."

In addition to their prior situation, as I saw it from the prespective of a caring visitor, I learned that a factor in their current Chimpanzee social groups consist of varying ages, to maintain soical diversity and longevity.  In 2013, we lost our beloved Tallulah, leaving the group at three. With them all being seniors, would present a senario that have seen the group reducing to a single Chimpanzee and that would not have happened as they would have been removed at two, but the thought of a social Animal like Chimpanzees reduced to that, is heartbreaking.  Was this their fault?  Should they be punished for the governing managements of The San Francisco Zoological Society, San Francisco Recreation and Parks, and the City of San Francisco failing to give them them what they needed?  Hell No!

I tweeted, I flickr'd, I youtubed, I reached out to media.

One of my contacts, had a contact at KGO (SF local ABC affliliate)  and they were interested in the story.  I gave them all the information I had, and people to contact for interviews.  I was interviewed for the piece as well.  

The exposure of the News Story was invaluable to Saving Our Chimps.  I am the only Member of the Public that is a Voice for the San Francisco Zoo Animals.  I am a pretty loud voice, but the Chimps and I, needed this outreach to create public pressure.

The plight of Our Chimps at the Zoo illustrates a trend that continues there.  The San Francisco Zoo continues to have a habit of slighting current Residents in need, for bringing in new and shiny pets, before taking care at home.  Thankfully, I was able to be the foundation for Our Chimps finally getting what they deserve, a future with the Security of living out their lives in the only place they know as home, and that home bringing them, new Enrichments, new Environments, and new Friends.
