Why Hasn't The Zoo Said Anything About The Lives Lost?

It's been four days since news articles noted that the Zoo released a statement to Media that one Red Kangaroo and two Walleroos had been recently killed.

I've been deeply saddened by this loss and the event that caused these deaths.  It hurts my Soul that their passing has been ignored.

I keep waiting for this type of statement to be posted by the Zoo to it's social media, but there has not been one word.  They died eleven days ago.

'We are Sad to announce a horrific loss to Our Zoo Family...'

Why hasn't the Zoo acknowledged these Lives?

Additionally there are other questions.

I don't even know if this is a thing but, it would seem that there should be a protocol and maybe there is to report suspected wild animal trespassing.  The Zoo made their statement last Friday, a week after the killings and three days after the first reported spotting if the Mountain Lion.

Coyotes are common in the City and have been spotted in the Zoo, but a Mountain Lion it seems should be reported and neighboring area warned to be alert when out. That's just my thought and curiosity.

Many more thoughts since this news about how the animals are housed at night. In addition to note about Coyote presence, the Zoo is on the route a Mountain Lion would take north to the City, where they have been spotted on the westside, so predator tresspassing should be a concern.  It would seem that all the animals should be locked in at night, especially ones that occupy exhibits around the perimeter fence which would be the first point of access. Closest to the fencing would be the Farm, the Walkabout and the Cassowary.

So, that's another question in my mind.  Are these animals locked in at night or are they left out?  If they are left out, considering the obvious concern, what is the thought process for leaving them out after hours?  Not being judgemental but definitely curious.

Three Lives Lost - Mountain Lion Roaming SF Suspected

The Mountain Lion roaming the City this past week, is suspected to have entered the Zoo and killed a Red Kangaroo and two Wallaroos.

I followed the story of the Mountain Lion and its rescue by Animal Care and Control, and taken to Oakland Zoo for evaluation.  There have been several of these instances and each time I wish our San Francisco Zoo was set-up to intake Wildlife in need.  After evaluation, this yearling was taken by Fish and Wildlife and released.  It seemed like this story turned out ideally.  Unfortunately, only for the Mountain Lion.

I read the Heartbreaking news from the Zoo yesterday late afternoon.  Been shedding so many tears, it's just so awful.

What a horror for a captive Animal to experience. For any Animal, but for captives, whose live is peaceful and safe, with no fear of predators, it had to be terrifying. Just too horrible to imagine those moments.

Hard to know the specifics, not much information provided.  I thought they were kept inside barn at night (assuming it happened overnight) but another article noted they were found in "outside exhibit".  There have been multiple Mtn Lion sightings in the past year, as well there is a huge Coyote population in the City.  There is the possibility of a predator threat, I would think none of the Animals in the collection should have outside access at night.

I'm so Sad for this loss, especially for the Kangaroo and Wallaroo Families, who have witnessed this and lost their loved ones.

RIP Precious Roos.  Bless Your Souls.

Ducks Continue to Fly into Windows Without Decals and Zoo Knows It!

So yeah.  While I'm trying to work on the post about the Madagascar project that I've been mentioning, two other issues came up.  Just can't seem to get ahead, there's unfortunately always something.  ... Here's the first one.

While visiting the Flamingos early in the week, I experienced the unfortunate sight of one of the wild Mallards flying out of the pond and hitting the window.  Crashing and then falling backward into the water.  Horrifying, as that could have gone very badly.  Sad, because its easy to prevent.

These incidents, not only with Waterfowl but with all Birds, is so common that there are many companies that make Decals for windows to help prevent these actions, and what could be severe injury or death to Birds.

These Decals are on the windows at Mandrills and Gorillas. Why aren't they on the windows at Flamingos, where there is a constant flight stream in and out of wild Ducks?

This was the first time I had seen this, but someone I was standing with has sadly seen it many times.  Before today, the last time a few days before.  That Duck was flying into the exhibit and hit the glass so hard, it fell to the ground and was so stunned it couldn't move.  She picked it up and brought it to the side, so it could recover and get back to the pond.  She also told me about another time, one hit the glass so hard it vomited all over.  This is a serious issue, and I ask again, Why don't these windows have the Decals?

Well, I don't have an answer, but I certainly have a some opinions about this.  First, this same person, a Friend of the Flamingos has told many Staffers of these incidents, noting the need for the Decals.  She's been telling people since she first saw this horror.  Its been since the glass was installed there and that's been well over a year!  Understandably this person, a Zoo Member was very upset and angry that this problem has been ignored.

Photo of window just after the Duck hit it.  The bottom circle is of the water dripping from where it hit.  The top circle shows a smear of something from a hit the week before.

I feel guilty that I didn't spot this Fail before seeing this crash.  That said, the Zoo has many Animal Professionals pulling in full-time paychecks, someone should have known to do this.  That said, either no one did?!  , which is hard to believe, and if that is the case then there's a bigger problem with the education of those Professionals.  Then there's the Or, that no one cares.  Regardless, Staffers were notified and still nothing.  Why?  Are they waiting for a Duck to break its neck when it flies into the window?  I sure don't want that to happen, and I sure don't want to see that.  Do they want that to happen?  Do they want that to happen in front of some kids?  That would really further their Mission of Connecting people with wildlife.

Good Grief San Francisco Zoo, buy some damn Decals and fix this situation!  If you didn't hate me so much I'd buy the Decals if that's what it took to prevent Animals from injuring or killing themselves.

I'll make it easy for you.  I'm sure I saw them recently at Sloat Garden Center, across the street.  They also got them in a 4-pk at Home Depot.

When I left I filled out a comment form. Directed it to Jason Waters, Wellness and Joe Fitting , Deputy Director. These are available upon request in the Membership Office. If you have an issue, comment or anything else, please stop in on your way out and use one!  So, Myself, this Member, and a Docent who was also there, have all alerted the Zoo to this.  Let's see how long it takes to get Decals on the Windows.

...

Ok so while on this, I'm just going to go ahead and include some personal opinions about the Flamingo exhibit, that I don't think I ever posted about.

After seeing an endless stream of people hang over into the exhibit before the renovation and someone throw something at one of the Flamingos while they were sitting on a nest, I was happy to see a better barrier go up.  When it went up, I commented that I thought it was a bit obtrusive, but if it keeps them safe,... The Staffer I was talking to said, it wasn't to protect the Birds (silly me!) but to keep them from flying out.

For some reason it was decided that the Juvenile Flamingos from the last couple of allowed breeding seasons, would not get their wings clipped.  One flew out and landed at Gorillas.  Thankfully after the Gorillas were in for the day.  I think there may have even been another one that flew out before the renovation.

When the renovation was done, the pole that would hold the aviary style netting was bare.  When the netting eventually did go up, it was only over a quarter of the area and with the way the light hit, almost invisible.  I almost didn't even notice it.  One Juvenile attempted to fly out and didn't see the net and flew into it, allegedly falling to the ground.  When I heard this, I noted how the net was hard to see, and suggested they put something over the top, a tarp or such, so that its visible to the Birds and they know its there.  Was told that was a good idea, but it may fly up, ripple in the wind, whatever excuse.  I made suggestion how to keep it down.  That never happened so I guess it was too hard to figure out.  Letting Birds fly into things seems to be the way they'd rather go.  Allegedly two of the other Juveniles decided to leave and land on the Restroom Building behind the exhibit.  Not long ago another quarter of the netting was put up, yet not over the area they were escaping through?  Its curious that the whole thing isn't netted, just to avoid any instances.  And wasn't that the goal?

My finger pointing to the part that is not netted.
FYI The window Ducks are flying into
is below that, under the overhang.
You can see how hard it is to tell which side is netted,
if you were a Flamingo looking up at it.

As well, the path the Ducks are taking is threw a small opening on the netted side, by the window,  so they are missing the opening.  If it was completely netted on top they would find a different way in or not have access.  They do like the Flamingo pond but it might save a life and they have the Lemur stream that they love and can hang out at.

Additionally, the Flamingos allegedly aren't being allowed to breed this season, which would be in full swing for hatching right now.  Rumor has it, there's a concern for future Chicks safety, considering what has happened in the recent past.  Sad.  Why don't they just net the whole area?  Problem solved.

And even further ridiculousness, I think they eventually clipped all the wings.  So, the whole exhibit build, all this drama and injury for nothing.

Show Our Chimps Some Love! - Sign Their Petition!

I've started a Petition.  Please sign and share and Help Keep Our Chimps Home!

The San Francisco Zoo has yet to make a public statement about their plan to Move Our Three Senior Chimps to another facility. That said, Staff have shared that there is indeed a plan and its no secret. Why do I want this stopped?

The SFZoo Chimpanzees have lived at the Zoo for 45 years +. All taken from the wild as infants. For two, the SFZoo is the only home they have ever known. They are aged 57, 45, and 45. At this stage in their life, I feel moving them would be traumatic.

In addition to it being Traumatic, it is also a Disgrace, as the San Francisco Zoo has let them down.

They have lived in the same enclosure since arriving at the Zoo. Starting in 1968, our Male arrived when the Triple Grotto first opened. There have only been two upgrades since. The last in mid 1980s. ... In 1997 the Residents of San Francisco voted in Tax Bond Money for the Zoo, one new exhibit specifically was the Great Ape Forest. After misappropriating the funds, the Chimps new home was never built. The money never replaced. The Chimps off the to do list.

During Directors Peterson's reign, we have seen her authorize to not only build party areas, but continue to and still planning to, bring in more non-rescued Animals and build new exhibits for them. The Chimps sit by an wait in a home with peeling paint and a rusted play structure.

Now, from what I hear the Chimps are faced with possibly being moved, because of possible group size and enclosure requirements by the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums). If the San Francisco Zoo had done right by these Chimps all along, instead of ignoring them and favoring the "shiny and new", this would not be happening.
Some might say they would be better off if the above is true.  In my opinion, that could then be said of every disrespected Animal at the SFZoo.  Admittedly, if age wasn't a factor, maybe, but it is the foremost factor now.  I also believe that Director Peterson and the SFZoo authoritative management (San Francisco Zoological Society and San Francisco Recreation and Park) should not get away with years of ignoring and be held responsible for this current situation.

This is a Call to Action for the San Francisco Zoo Director, to:

*Halt any plan to bring in new non-rescue Animals in dire need.

*Upgrade their existing home, so they can bring in two additional females.

*Build the new Chimpanzee home they and the Residents of San Francisco, were promised 18 years ago.

By signing this petition, I hope we can shine light on this situation and Stop This Move.  SO, Our Senior Chimps can live out their lives in the place they know as home. Please sign, share and Help Save Our Chimps.

Thank you

Rhino Gets Birthday Treats! - aka The Zoo Gave Gauhati Birthday Treats Can You Believe It?!

Wow, can the tides be turning at the Zoo?  Someone told me today that the Zoo posted about Gauhati's Birthday.  Unbelievable really, so I took a look see at their Facebook Page to see when they posted, and there was a post today. If you read my blogs then you know I LOVE the Zoo Friend Birthdays!  After years of blogging about the Disrespect of the lack of acknowledging the Animals Birthdays, Gauhati got some Special Treats!  I'm so happy for him!  Wish I could have seen it, but its all good, most important it that he got something to Celebrate him :)

ScreenCap from Zoo FB Page

As I've also blogged about, People love this kind of stuff.  The amount of comments on their post, shows that.  Its been a missed opportunity for the Animals to be Celebrated, get Special Enrichment, and have People enjoy seeing them up and having some fun!

That said, why can't the Zoo Staff communicate with each other?  Keepers should tell the Social Media Staff that they are planning something and it should be posted, so that People can make a plan to visit. No reason why those who Love the Animals should miss special activities like this.

That said part two, I'm curious that this was posted today.  His Birthday was Sunday.  Since it was Holiday craziness, I went yesterday and sang to him.  Then today there's this post.  Maybe my blogging nudges them?  Maybe my mentions remind them?  Whatever it is that works for them to get with the program, I'm all for!  I always wait til the evening to post my Birthday Photos, just to see if there's a mention.  Most always there is not.  I say "most" because they did mention Erin's Birthday, but I figured it was because it was her First. It happened on the actual day, so it probably was. ... Still would be curious to know, When did this actually happen? Did it happen on his Birthday on Sunday?  OR later?  Doesn't matter to him, or to me really, because as long as IT happens at all in the days around the actual date, I'm just glad it happens BRAVO!

You can keep up to date with all the Zoo Friend Birthdays (including Gauhati's and three happening this Saturday), as they happen on my other blog :)  Check in Saturday evening and see who had Birthdays!
