Orangutan Update Part Two - The Current State Of Triple Grotto & My Ideas

This post was part of the previous post.  It stands alone, but noting this in case you want to stay updated with the Saga that is, a home for the Orangutans.

So, as a reminder, this is what has been done at Triple Grotto.  ...

Everything that has been done, is so that the Keepers can access... since there is no netting.
AND this is because there are allegedly no funds (because factually no fundraising was ever done) to do anything in a way that would provide an appropriate enclosure.

Nothing has been done for the Orangutans.

When I wrote the first idea, it was last weekend, after seeing the Middle Grotto structure had been cut in half.
Middle Grotto cut in half

I've mentioned netting in several posts.  I still believe that would have been the obvious and ideal way to go, considering the moat and the island size limitation.  It would have also provided them with something built in that they could use to move about naturally. Something they already make great use of when they are in the Chimpanzee yard. Per the Orangutan Husbandry Guidelines.....  Triple Grotto as is, is not set-up for climbing and swinging.  The Animal Care Staff will have to rig up hose and rope to create these options.  That is something that would have been done anyway, but considering the limiting size and structure already on the islands, it seems it might be a challenge.

I had thought of, and was going to suggest a climbing panel like what was on one side of an old Chimp structure in South Grotto years ago, might be a good idea for one of the two existing structures.  Then last week I noticed half the structure in Middle Grotto had to be cut down, due to corrosion. As well, in a discussion learned that those cargo style nets can be dangerous.  So, I then I had another idea.  I suggested that they build up another level with a platform, and look into a panel of some kind of netting, if possible, the same used in the Chimp yard, and attach it to one or a couple sides of the structure. Because as is, that half structure does nothing for the Orangutans vertical needs.  Just ideas, I know Animal Staff will do the best they can with what they have.

  1. It's clear they learned nothing from when female baby gorilla died few years ago. Mind bogglingly these are very people trying to get people excited about wildlife. Clearly they are very blind. Give the fact this day and age of technology, what is transpiring is selfish enderves with no creativity. If AZA passes this we are really in trouble as human species!

    1. @junglejim ... Thank you again for your comment, appreciate the words. Yea, sadly with better management Kabibe would not have had to lose her life. So many fails that fall on management are responcible for that tragedy. ... Unfortunately there is a huge disconnect with management and that i think they believe they are doing a bang-up job! Not fully believe, because one would then have to be delusional, ut must on some level, and the other level, well that's just something that's a purely shameful attribute, to be in charge of an Animal Care Facility and not care about Animals. They would not like to hear that, but these are not my opinions, these are facts in action at the SFZoo. When I say they, is specifically mean the Zoo Director and those who agree and enable her decisions. ... Yes the outcome of your last sentence will be very telling!
