Happy Birthday Tatiana - Remembering Passed Zoo Friends

Well, per usual, I didn't finish a post by my intended goal time.  I started this last night, and am finally posting it.

Yesterday was Tatiana's Birthday.  She would have been Sixteen and even though a Senior, if she was healthy, she would have still been here.  Happy Birthday Lady.  I hope You and Tony, his Sister Emily and Shastyuh (all our passed Siberian Tiger Friends) are having a wonderful afterlife!

Earlier this week, I saw that the lettering on the plaque on Tatiana's Bench was really worn. I had been noticing it for some time, but now it wasn't even readable unless you got up close. I think all the storms we've had did a final number on it.  I was one of the Donors for her Bench, so I wanted to fix this. I got permission, and took care of it on Tuesday. I wanted to get it done by her Birthday (June 27), and thankful I could. It was a bit harder than I thought to stay on the embossed lines of such tiny lettering, but I did the best I could, even if not the perfection I imagined.   A couple oops!  but it looks really good now!  So I'm very happy.  Its readable on approach, and looks bright and renewed!

before
after

I met Kathleen McGarr after Tatiana's death Christmas 2007.  Both of us were deeply affected by the tragedy, and as a result, active commenters on the sfgate site for every article written about it.  I later learned that she had begun the process of getting a bench as a Memorial for Tatiana.  She wanted a place for people to stop and remember her.  I am lucky that our paths crossed in time for me to be able to donate to the purchase of the bench.  I had recently lost my Cat of Twenty Years, and donated in his memory, which meant alot to me.

Kathleen's efforts for Tatiana, reached people who had never known Tatiana, but were touched by what had happened to her.  Over two dozen donors, some from out of state, contributed to this Memorial for Tatiana.  Kathleen's goal was to have it installed by the first anniversary.

The group of local Donors were invited to meet with Tatiana's Keeper (Barb Palmer) at the Bench the Morning it was installed.  At Kathleen's request, it was placed at Tatiana's home.  Her companion Tony still lived there.  Barb was wonderful.  She talked to us about Tatiana, answered questions and shed tears with the rest of us.  It was an emotional day, that finally came to fruition.  Thank You Kat, for all your hard work for our Beautiful Girl.

I went back to the bench yesterday, her Birthday.  I wanted to make sure the letters still looked good and touch them up if needed.  I had a chat with her Spirit, which led to talking to all the Spirits of my passed Big Cat Friends.  Some may not believe, but I am a believer.  I often talk to all the Friends Spirits Zoo-wide.  Yesterday, it was Tatiana, Tony, Emily, Shastyuh, Padang, Kita, Tunya, Amanzi, and our Jahari, who just recently passed.  Its important to my soul for me to recognize them, even though they aren't still here in body.  They all became a part of my life, and you don't lose that.

A few years ago, a friend of mine from out of state, who visited the Zoo before we met, wished he could put flowers on Tatiana's bench for her Birthday.  I told him I would do it for him.  I left these flowers with a ribbon, I wrote a note to Tatiana and all our passed Friends.   After I put them there, and took a moment, I left, but circled back a bit later.  I was happy to see people stopping to read the plaque and over hear people remembering her, especially in more than the usual, sensationalized quip.

In 2010, my friend Lee had a meeting with Director Peterson.  She pitched her idea for a Memorial Garden, and offered to buy  five trees in honor of five Zoo Friends we had lost in as many weeks.  She and I had been doing our own memorials, but we both wished there was a place in the Zoo that was dedicated to those we have lost.  The idea was veto'd.  Not of value.  Sad.

We both still talk about it.  I have in recent years made specific notes about it in my Zoo fantasy wish list, even imagining how it would look and where it would go.  The first location, Lee's idea was a nice spot by South Gate, but that is no longer an option.  I think a nice spot now would be the Patas Lawn.  More important than the location, is just the idea that we could possibly have one.  I say we, as not only myself and Lee think this is a wonderful idea, there are so many people who are endeared to the Animals.  It would be nice to have a place of peace, where you could go and pay your respects to a Friend who touched your life.  I have too often over the last nine years, stood crying at the home of where a recently passed Zoo Friend had lived.  Often I would be trying to take a moment to say some words quickly before people come by. An enclosed Garden with a bench and some sort of remembrance marker (a stone, ornament, etc.) of those we've lost, would be beautiful and a respectful tribute.

Thank You to all the Precious Animal Beings I have met at the Zoo.  Each one of you have enriched my life.  I love you and miss you.

Happy Birthday Sukari! - Past Party Pix

You might see I have three posts in draft. I started them last weekend and never finished.  As I've written often, writing about the Zoo is energy sucking, so I do alot of putting it off.

I jump ahead today, as I have been thinking about this Beautiful Lady's Birthday all week.  During the week I asked if she would get a Party, but no one knew.   I hope she got some special treats today.

Happy Birthday Sukari!
I Love You Lady!

I Love Celebrating all the Animals Birthdays!  I have Loved Suki since the moment I saw her, and she has always held a special place in my heart. Most of you know, in 2010 my friend Lee and I made Enrichments for the Big Cats almost every weekend for ten months, and on occasion for the Bears.  One of the most satisfying Enrichment Events we did was for Sukari's 8th Birthday.

I tweeted a photo of it earlier today and then started to tell this story to my Facebook Friends.  A bit through, I decided to make it a post, because it meant so much to me.

Our Enrichment for her 8th Birthday in 2010 was instrumental in helping her come out of her shyness. Brought to the Zoo in 2009, Suki was still hiding in the quarantine and cave areas, eight months after arriving.  We barely saw her!  The Keeper (Barb) wasn't sure she would even come out to participate in the fun, as until then, all the Enrichment Toys we had made, she had quickly snatched and brought to quarantine room, or not touched til after hours.  I said, no worries, we can just try.

My idea for Suki's Ice Cream Social developed.  A Grotto-wide celebration for all the Big Cats!  I made Lion sized Ice Cream Cones, and Party Bags for all the Cats.  Lee made Suki's Birthday Cake and Mache Balls for Skylar/Leanne, Ming Wah and Rigel (Snow Leopards).

The wheels were turning about how to get Sukari to enjoy her Party with Tunya!  That night I thought the best plan might be to place her her Cake in front of one of the cave doors.  Since she would be sitting in the cave while Barb set-up, when Barb opened the door to let her in, she would most likely flee to the other side.  So, my idea was to open the door opposite of the one where the Cake was, so that when she fled to the other cave she would see the Cake in the doorway!  The plan worked exactly how I imagined!  Putting her Cake there was just the thing to intrigue her curiosity so much she couldn't resist! Shy Girl stuck her head in the doorway, just enough to grab her Cake, and bring it into the cave with her!  She wrangled the whole thing through the doorway!  Tunya was behind her and they both disappeared into the cave.  I ran out and round to the yard, and by that time they each had half the Cake!  She sat with him and they both had big fun together!  It was so wonderful to watch!   After a bit, Suki noticed the top tier had fallen off.  She went over and got it, proudly strutting away carrying it across the yard in her mouth!  She was so Happy and so was I, to see her like this!  It was amazing to see her so comfortable.  This was the first time we were really able to see her being herself and it was a beautiful thing!  It was a turning point for her and I was happy to be a part of it.

Here's the photo I tweeted, a screen-cap of some of the photos from the sequence I just described.

Chimpanzee Update - Chimps Enter New Yard For The First Time! and See Their New Orangutan Neighbor!!

From Draft to Post
Monday 7.8.19

Well, I'm finally getting to this post.  I heard something on the radio this morning and I thought, yes!  I must strive for that mentality.  It was in reference to writing papers, whether in school, business, personal correspondence,... Don't wait for it to be perfect, just get it done.  They had one gal noting that some paper she was working on has taken three months.  I laughed as my Madagascar post has been in draft for over a year!  It takes me along time, because many of the subjects are draining to rehash.  Some posts also require  going through info, photos, or even researching some things.  I like to present as much information, and documentation to support what I'm writing about. Anyway, I thought, I just need to get my posts in draft done.  There are six more than the four I had holding places. So I got ten total to write.  I wanted to do alot over the last weekend.  I felt it was the perfect time to get Independence from these weights.  Didn't happen.  So I'm hoping to reach my goals by the end of the month.

So let's start!  The first of two Great Ape Updates!  It seems there is something new most days I visit.  Its a busy time for Chimps and Orangs, New Animals, Introductions, New Homes, New Areas, and all the combo's and steps of making that work toward the final goal of these two happy and comfortable groups of Apes.

Unless I missed something, the Zoo's Social Media has still made no mention of Qadeer. No welcome. No updates when he was getting introduced to Cobby, Maggie and Minnie. No Nothing.  Sad. Disrespectful.  Anyway, their loss, as I have been posting about him since before he got here.  Here's one from last week of him enjoying his pepper snack!

Our precious Chimpers!  Qadeer was the perfect addition to our group.  Wonderful seeing them all sitting close enough together to capture all in one photo!  L-R Minnie (above), Qadeer, Maggie, and Cobby.

Going back to February, when I had heard that the Orangutans were on their way, I was surprised as the new Yard wasn't even being worked on, and Triple Grotto (TG) was in no condition ready to receive Orangutans.  By mid May, the Orangs were already here, in the TG house and rushing to get the Yard done to be open on Memorial Day weekend was in motion and going strong seven days straight that last week.

For a couple weeks, I had taken a progress look on every visit.  It looked great, but there was this one log that was a floor to trail access point. I worried that it was too steep for our Senior Chimps. As well, when I saw it with no construction workers a couple days before the Chimps got access, I thought that the main platform access was also too steep.  I worried further that the yard was going to be ok for young Orangutans but not our Senior Chimps.

I got lucky a couple days before the Holiday Weekend, and to came round Chimps and saw the Keeper putting food in the yard, and realized I was going to see the Chimps in there and that it was the first time!  When the Chimps came out, these friends surprised me!  They went right for the steep ladder and climbed it with ease, even Cobby!  They were able to access everything!  I was so happy, after being worried.  In hindsight, I shouldn't have worried and known that there was no way that our Primate Curator would have allowed them in there, if he thought there was any issue with age related accessibility.

I think because it seemed rushed, and I have heard Triple Grotto plan is pending funding, that I thought some corners might have been cut to fit the timeline and budget.  Again, even if those were factors, I should have had faith in what I already knew about the care our Curator has for these Friends and what he did to make the Dayroom beautiful.  I mostly about things the Zoo gets wrong, but I need to say, hiring Joe Knobbe (Curator) was the best hire they have done in as long as I can remember.  The guy has been a Godsend to our Chimps and now our Orangs.  He really knows his stuff, and this project, the Great Ape Passage (GAP) would have never been done to the level of awesome it has been, if it weren't for him. I'm am so grateful for what he's done for My Precious Chimpers and their new Chimpanzee and Orangutan Friends who will all live in the GAP.

All that said, in case there are some who don't follow my YouTube or Twitter, and missed these videos,  here's links to all the fun from the first time the Chimps had access to the new Yard!  So happy I was able to see this, another first for our Chimps!  In addition to the joy of seeing them get yet another new and enriching area to explore, the most wonderful part of this is that they did it as a Family.  This is the first time all four have experienced something for the first time together.  It was a beautiful thing!

Pt Two
Pt Three

The Zoo's Director of Communications, Graphics, and Social Media were all there, taking photos and filming it, yet there has not been one post showing this special moment in their lives.   Thankfully I happened by at the right time!  It baffles me why the Zoo doesn't post things like this.  All the new stuff the Chimps are experiencing should be shared.  These are all new things for them.  The first new things in fifty years!  That's something to share!

Today the Chimps had another first,...  While I was standing outside watching the Orangutans, I again wondered if they would ever let them see eachother, like one group in each trail.  Literally a few minutes later, Amoi came out into the trail that connects to the Dayroom.  Same moment, the Chimps started screaming.  It was happening!  They were in full view of eachother!  Amoi ran to the door, as the Chimps hooted and hollered in the windows.  She stopped short of the door, and waved her arms towards them.  When they vocalized, she ran back towards Triple Grotto.  Not long after she ran out again, this repeated itself many times.  In the early rushes, she started knocking on the door lol!  and instead of running back to TG, she stepped back a few feet and looked at the Chimps in the window!  I think it became a game for her!  Soon everyone was calm.  Surprising that Cobby once again, was the least animated.  I'm really proud of him how he has handled all these new things.  I was reminded that Our three Seniors had lived side by side with Orangs in the past, and found out Qadeer, had never seen one before!  So, that explained why his reaction was the most high energy.

I won't load my photo files til the weekend, so I filmed the first clip from camera to cell phone.  You can view it here:

Looking to the future.

Our Chimp group will grow this year, with the addition of three additional Chimpanzees.  This will be another first for our three Seniors, as they have only lived in a group maximum of four.  There were other Chimps during the time frame when Cobby and Tallulah first came to the Zoo, but I think the others were gone by the time Minnie and Maggie arrived.

With our group size expanding to seven, more space will be needed.  I have posted before in wonder about the status of redoing Triple Grotto.  For the longest time, no one seemed to know if anything was going to be done to it.  That didn't make sense, as it is clearly a necessary cog in the GAP project.  That said, because of the level of awesome the Dayroom and Yard turned out to be, it would be a let down and eyesore for them to not do it up right.   I have heard its all pending funding.  I've heard it may only involve the North Grotto, which would be ridiculous.  The only logical thing to do is to combine North and South Grotto to make a large yard. I still maintain the best thing to do is fill in the moat.  I blogged about this years ago.  I blogged about it recently.  I think making a larger topical area is a must.  I also hope they can keep or build a new twigging mound, and also have some greenery, grass and bushes if possible.  I've been looking at other Zoos exhibits and have seen some like that.  Basically I hope there are elements to it that are different than the Dayroom and Yard.

This sign now up at Triple Grotto.
To me acknowledges something will be done.
When, is anyones' guess.

All I can say to that, and I've said it before, they Zoo has known for years that this would need to be done.  The Zoo has wanted Orangutans for years.  The Zoo should have been fundraising for this the while time.  This project is in a high profile area of the Zoo, it has to be done right.    Since the Dayroom opened, the Chimps have been a big draw.  People love them and they love the new areas.  They can't cheap out on Triple Grotto.  It has to look like it belongs with the two other areas.  I'm sure our Curator will have a wonderful plan, and I hope the Zoo listens and allows him to create more greatness for our Apes, old and new.

Orangutan Update - Amoi Explores New Yard, and Ollie Ventures Out to the Trail! - Name Changes -

Monday 7.8.19

I started this post a month ago, after seeing Amoi for the first time, I think it might have been her second day with access to the trail.  Since then, Amoi has not only accessed the Skytrail, but the new Yard!  Ollie has finally gotten comfortable enough to come out on the trail, and just today Amoi had some fun seeing the Chimps for the first time!  Alot has been happening at the Great Ape Passage!

This video is from that first day I saw Amoi.  She is as pretty as the pictures I saw of her in her previous home and when she moves her hair flows.  She is definitely the Super Model of the Zoo!

The next first, was getting to see Amoi in the yard!  Which I've now seen a few times!  On my Youtube you can search or scroll for more videos, there's a handful by now!

While Amoi has been out and about, Ollie has stayed in the house.  That all changed last week, when he came out to the trail for the first time!  So lucky I was there and saw him peek out and then be like, yea, don't think so

As the days passed he became more comfortable and started going out daily, often bringing a blanket and napping out there.  I saw his second day out.  You can view the video here:

And then today, this happened!  This narrative is also on my Chimp update. No long after she ran out again, this repeated itself many times.

Will upload full video on weekend, but heres a bit I filmed on my cell from my camera!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuCV1tLMW40
So yeah, of course the Zoo has changed these poor Beings names.  First Amoi and now Ollie.  I never use the new names, so if you follow the Zoo, regardless of what they are calling them, the female is Amoi and has been for her life of sixteen years and the male is Ollie, his name all of his nine years.

I don't often check out the Zoos social media, unless I'm looking to see if something specific has been posted, or its been a couple weeks.  The Zoo posted about Amoi and Ollie, and I of course loved the comments by their fans at the Zoos they came from. Screencaps from the Zoo's Facebook page below. Additionally, I think its rather rude that the Zoo doesn't bother to reply to the comments.

I've made it no secret that I hate the name changing.  I have blogged about it for almost nine years, since Tucker (Hippo) arrived.  You can search the blog for posts about this if interested.  In short, I don't think any Animal with a name already, should be renamed.  I think offering to put a plaque with the Donor's name, noting that the Animals care is  supported by a donation from X, is a much better way.  No one I know likes the name changing, and obviously its farther reaching than that!

So, any fans of Amoi and Ollie, from their previous home's, make sure to check out my YouTube channel and Subscribe as I visit the Zoo every week and try to post my videos of the week on the weekend.  You can keep updated on your Friends Ollie and Amoi!

AZA President Admits Ndume Left at TGF, Knowing Not In His Best Interest - (Non-SFZoo)

Great read from AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) President, Dan Ashe.  He admits what I've been saying all along, that the Cincinnati Zoo ( the AZA, and the Gorilla SSP) left Ndume at The Gorilla Foundation for reasons that were best for Koko, NOT Ndume!  This has always hurt my heart for Ndume. Just sick that this was allowed to knowingly happen to him and lasted near three decades. Its almost worse hearing the admittance. They knew it wasn't best for him. They KNEW it was not in HIS best interest.  As a senior himself, Ndume could have died there at The Gorilla Foundation before Koko and never had the life he should have.  They robbed Ndume of a Gorilla Family of his own for 28 years of his life, so Koko could possibly catch a glimpse of another Gorilla from time to time. Unconscionable!  A moral crime.  I applaud them for going the distance and doing the right thing now, but they are damn lucky he survived her and is here for them to able to give him the life he has always deserved. Shame on them all for the past.  They better jump through hoops for him from here on out!

Ndume the Gorilla Finally Returns to Cincinnati Zoo! - (Non-SFZoo)

Ndume is finally free of The Gorilla Foundation!  Hallelujah!

Its been an emotional 24 hours.  I laid in bed all day, reading Ndume reports, while cuddling my kitten and recovering from the fatigue of our extreme heat wave.  I didn't start my day til late this afternoon and this is the only thing I plan to do today.  It's a great day for Ndume and all who love him!

This is Non-SFZoo related, but important to me.  I have written other posts about the plight of Ndume the Gorilla, Koko and The Gorilla Foundation (TGF). I haven't posted about Ndume, since February, when after TGF refused to release Ndume into their care, the Cincinnati Zoo had to take them to court.  There were bumps in that road, as Penny Patterson/TGF, repeatedly battled The Cincinnati Zoo, who own Ndume, for custody. Finally last week, the Judge ordered a set date for transfer.

Since the story of his transfer overnight, has had much media coverage, I'm going to just write a bit to wrap-up this year long wait to see this happen for Ndume and add a couple news links that I thought were the best coverage.

I followed this case closely, having crusaded for Ndume's transfer since Koko's passing last June.  Knowing the move date was June 13th, yesterday, I had hoped someone from Cincinnati would film Ndume's journey, so the many of us who have rallied for him to have a better life, could be a part of that.

As soon as I got home last night, before I could do anything, I was stopped by a news video of Ndume being loaded into a van and on his way to the airport!  All I could do was stand there sobbing.  Tears of joy streaming that this was finally happening for him, for his new life adventure and praying for safe travel.
screencap from:
This morning, brought many news articles, and many more tears!  One that thankfully mentioned a live stream press conference from the Cincinnati Zoo, that was about to happen at the moment I was reading it.

I thought everything about this was wonderful!  I never imagined we would get this share of information.  Grateful!  It was an excellent Q & A with Ron Evans, the Cincinnati Zoo Primate Curator.  I've been a bit critical of Evans, as well as the Gorilla SSP's Kristen Lukas, reasons for which I will reiterate later.  But, I have to give him props now, because he gave all of us who love Ndume, what we needed with this dialog!  I couldn't ask for more.  I hope the Zoo continues to make progress reports much like this one.

Knowing that Ndume didn't have to be sedated, didn't resist the crate and from additional non-media information I heard, he seemed to have been the perfect traveler!  And now hearing he was already exploring his new surroundings, confirms, this was the right thing for him, and he was ready to leave that life of isolation.

The criticism I mentioned and I have written in previous posts, was because I felt and still do, that the right thing was not done for Ndume for decades.  Whether that was because, as Evans has stated, he felt he couldn't take Ndume away from Koko, or as evidenced by the alleged lack attention given by Evans, Lukas, et al, to Ndume's life at The Gorilla Foundation.  First and foremost, TGF is not an AZA accredited facility, Ndume is in the AZA system so therefore should have never been sent there to begin with.  TGF allegedly does not in any way follow AZA guidelines for housing, diet or medical care.  By all accounts by former caregivers,  no one from the Cincinnati Zoo or the Gorilla SSP (as reps of the AZA) regularly, or even annually, visited the TGF to check on Ndume's care regimen.  Ndume was left there and ignored for decades, by the organization that he was bred into.  I in no way would want to take anything away from Koko, Penny Patterson's first victim, but Koko by all accounts did not want to be around other Gorillas, She had already been ruined and humanized. My heart breaks for her every time I think about her.  She and Ndume did not really co-habitate.  So leaving him there, because it wouldn't be fair to her, in essence put her above him.  What if Ndume had passed away before Koko?  His life without a Gorilla Family at The Gorilla Foundation would have been all he had known for near three decades.  That's just wrong and sad.

That all said, and its not to bash anyone, but it's the truth and needs to always be remembered as to how Ndume ended up in this situation for 28 years. That said, thankfully Cincinnati Zoo did the right thing and I give them kudos for not taking the easy way out, and signing him over to Penny.  When things got tough, they fought for Ndume all the way to the end.  So a big Thank you, to Ron Evans and the Cincinnati Zoo team for making this happen for Ndume.  You did right by him. I look forward to following his journey.

The other good media piece was by a Cincinnati local news station. They captured the footage of him being loaded into the van, and in another piece, interviewed John Safkow the former caregiver (2009-2012)  who started his crusade for Ndume several years ago.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=share&v=67qIWo4tlg0

This had me shedding tears again!  A great report, with the best being the quotes from Ndume's best friend John Safkow!  The first one (pictured above) was awesome and resonated with me.  I'm so glad we met.  He is a like minded crusader.  Neither of us started out knowing we would have to save our respective Ape Friends, but when the situations presented themselves, our souls knew we had to try!  Bravo my friend!  Congratulations for keeping your promise to Ndume!  I know it feels good!  One of the most important things I've done in my life, was helping my SFZoo Chimp Friends. When I was approached by a former Keeper who told me the Director's plan to kick them out, he followed it by saying, "What are you going to do?".  He came to me when no one at the Zoo, not even those who cared for our Chimps would be their voice.  Not even anonymously.  He knew I would be their Voice.  So, I know how it feels to save the lives of these precious Beings we are endeared to.  Thank you John for being the only person with the guts to show their face and speak the truth about what life really was like for the Gorilla's, at The Gorilla Foundation.  What life was like for Ndume.
