Questions About Lions/Pandas That Need To Be Answered - Will The Zoo Ever Do So?

I started a Lion/Panda related post yesterday morning.  This post.  I needed a break, and never resumed.  Trying again this morning, I remembered I had made a notation at the end of my weekend post two weekends ago, that I was going to do a supplemental post to that one.  I forgot, and wrote something different last weekend.  I endeavor to finish this draft, as well as that missed one and two others.  Goal is by day's end, but I feel a nap coming on, so who knows how far I'll get.

Coming soon, there are going to be some posts, where I'm going to just publish findings for documentation purposes. Those posts may also note more about why's, and have my opinions. Some might just be simply putting the information out there.

This post is a bit of a rehash,  because there are still unanswered questions about the Lion Transfers, Cat Yards, and exactly what is going on with the Panda Chase.

Frankly, the answers seem pretty clear to most, but the Zoo needs to answer them so there is no question as to Why what's happening, actually is.

I've written in previous posts that I'm going to try and keep what's happening to Our Lions active, the best that I can.  That may be with newer, relevant, and/or related information.  That just may be by continuing to ask these, and other questions, repeatedly, until they are sufficiently answered.  I may be chasing facts of a story that will just never materialize, or help save Our Lions from being evicted from THEIR Home in The LION HOUSE.  I may just sound like a real pain in the ass, but if something isn't right, especially with our beloved Animals, as the saying goes, I'm going to be that "Dog With A Bone".

So, the questions that I want answered (and I'm not alone) are...

If Zoo leadership Maintains that the Lions are being transferred out due to (hypothetical) possible future mobility issue maneuvering the yard's moat, and has no relation to the Zoo's Plan to renovate The Lion House and Cat Yards for Pandas...

*Then Why has one of the Cat Yards been vacant since the Panda Plan was announced in April 2024?

*It's been ten months since the management changeover, Why has there not been the acquisition of another Big Cat to occupy the vacant yard?

*If this is not about clearing the Cat Yards and Lion House, to keeping the area on hold for fund pending renovations, and future acquisition of Pandas, then...

*Why can't the Zoo start fundraising specifically for an extended fence line or other upgrades related to the Lions projected aging needs, so they can stay here?

The last question is based on a statement saying, "...it was not feasible to upgrade for Lions".

*Why isn't it "feasible"?

*Is it Panda related, or lack of funds related?  Because, it has to be one of those, and the Zoo needs to be clear about which on it is.

Relative timeline of Big Cats:

September 2021 ... Tigers Jillian and Teddy are transferred to San Diego.

March 2022 ... Tiger Skylar (Leanne) passes away.

May-July 2022 ... Zoo Removes finger walls from Cat Yards, reducing four enclosures to two.  One double-wide is occupied by Lions, one is vacant.

February 2023 ... Lion Sukari passes away.

May 2023 ... Jaguar arrives.  Temporary housing in former Snow Leopard enclosure.  Containment Upgrade to Cat Yard B proceeds.  Upgrade deemed still breachable by Animal Care Staff.  Further Upgrade attempts cease.

September 2023 ...  Female Lion arrives.  After six months alone after the loss of his Mother, Jasiri gets a companion.

April 2024 ... Former Mayor announces Panda Plan. Very early and very briefly, an alternative location for Pandas is mentioned, but the Lion House/Cat Yards is chosen.

July 2025 ... Jaguar passes away.

I planned for this post to include documentation of some information I found about Panda acquisitions in US Zoos.  Now that I've expanded on my notes for some of the above, I think making a separate post on Panda info might be best.

The important take-away from this is that it's been exactly four years that one of the Big Cat Yards has remained vacant.   That is because it needs to be clear for Panda renovations.  The same reason Our Lions are being transferred out.   That is the actual reason.  While a future where mobility concerns due to aging may become a issue, and lack of funds for upgrading non-existent, in my opinion that time is not now, and it's seemingly being used as a smoke screen reasoning.  And that's just not right.

Secrecy is seemingly still part of the Zoo's agenda.  Certainly specific details regarding Panda fundraising are suspiciously being kept under wraps.

The Zoo should really just come out and say,... We don't have the funding right now, but we're hoping to.  We don't know when that's going to happen.  The only way that we can afford to bring Pandas to SF, is to put them in the Lion House and that's why we have to transfer Our Lions to another Zoo.  We are going to keep the Lion House vacant until we know that we absolutely cannot bring Pandas here.

That's what we all believe to be the reality of what's happening.  I want to hear it from Zoo Leadership.

I used to use (search) labels, but too often forget.  I started noting "Hot Topic" in title, but fell lax on that.  Now I'm just going to add labels, keywords, etc., here at the bottom with hashtags.  Does it help in searches, who knows.
