What Would Jane Goodall Think?

It's a gorgeous day on the westside.  Hope all the Zoo Friends are basking in the sun.  I just opened notepad, surrounded by a literal handful of posts, I'm hoping the sunshine will keep me calm and give me the ambition to finish something.

As I pick-up where I left off yesterday, a comment came through for my recent post, Orangutan/Panda Outrage Will Continue Indefinitely.

> "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its Animals are treated. I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.”

A quote never found in a speech by Gandhi, but the quote, no matter from whence it came, speaks to the way I view the world.  Substitute ‘nation’ for zoo, and ‘the cruelty of man’ with ‘the neglect by Ms. Peterson,’ and you have a summation of the SF Zoo of late.  What more can one say about this woman?  At what point will the city officials, city purse-keepers and a tax-paying public begin to demand change?

The Orangutans and other Animals don’t have a voice.  Thank you for being a voice for them.  What a dream it would be to get people to hear!!! <

As I read this comment, a quote attributed to Gandhi that I've heard before, I decided to include it in a post.  I also thought I would add other quotes in similar vein.  Since the focus of my posts moving forward will be highlighting the plight of Our Orangutans life at Our Zoo, at the hands of Director Peterson, I first googled, "animal protection quotes jane goodall".

Sometimes things just work out how they are supposed to.  Today is International Women's Day.  Isn't it perfect that this came up in that search?

I am reminded about a quote by Director Tanya Peterson that I copied from a news article to a post last fall...

Indeed.  What would Jane Goodall think, had she witnessed Our Precious Ollie and Amoi, living exclusively in caged tubes?

Ollie is literally frowning as he watches the Chimpanzees in their yard roaming free without immediate confines.

As documented in that same recent post (linked at end), we can all see the "mockery" Zoo Director Peterson made of her Cruelty that was keeping Our Orangutans in caged tubes.

We must all ask Tanya Peterson, Will you ever make a difference in the lives of Our Orangutans?

Will there ever be "justice" for the damage Tanya Peterson has done to Ollie and Amoi?

Are You Someone Who Cares About Our Orangutans?

This photo came up in my Facebook Memories Sunday (March 2), for Dr Seuss Day.  I made it in 2015 when I was crusading to Save Our Chimpanzees from being kicked out of their Zoo home by Director Tanya Peterson.

Maggie, Minnie and Cobby

Our Zoo desperately needs someone with authority to Care.  It needs major changes to management, foremost by replacing Director Peterson, then in restructuring the Zoological Society that has supported Peterson's mismanagement for sixteen+ years.  As well, the RecPark Commission's role needs to be redefined, because right now they are useless to the Zoo.

As I said in my previous post, I will not stop being a Voice for the Animals, specifically until the Orangutans get a new home built for them.  The Orangutan/Panda Outrage is valid and concerning.  There has been No Care for the Orangutans from Director Peterson, the Zoological Society, or the RecPark Commissioners.

I have well documented the Orangutans history and their ignored Needs.  I have documented how it's connected to the Panda Plan.  In an effort to break-up the repeat of my words for readers, I asked another Friend of Our Great Apes to write-up how witnessing what happened to Our Orangutans made her feel.

These are the words of someone else who cares...

"Orangutans, and - nothing against the Chimps who deserve their space!!!!

Why would a renowned Zoo tolerate a Director who demonstratively lacks an understanding of basic Animal Care?

I took my young daughter to the Zoo frequently over the years, and enjoyed watching her discover the Animals.

She grew up, and in the spring of 2019, I started to visit regularly by myself, sometimes a few times a week, and I’d linger with the Chimps.

The Great Ape Passage had just been built and the Chimpanzees were able to walk through newly built tubes to get into the new day room from their longtime grotto across the way.

What a joy it was to finally be able to interact with the Chimps through the glass!!!

I immediately felt connected to them, and their joy was visible in their interactions with visitors and staff.

Enter the Orangutans.

By the time of the arrival of the Orangutans, the Chimps no longer had access to the tubes; they had their indoor room as well as a new, netted outdoor space.

The tubes were given to the Orangutans. But that was all they had as an enclosure - for at least 6 months!!!!

Orangs tend to have droopy expressions, but their dismay at being trapped in those tubes was obvious and on full display by any observer.

They watched the Chimps enjoy their own space. They antagonized the Chimps at times, no doubt in an expression of envy.

photo added by blog owner

As Amoi watched; Ollie frequently hid under a blanket.

If you’ve ever spent time observing Orangutans, you’d see how emotional they are; how much they like to climb, and just how intelligent they truly are.

https://a-z-animals.com/blog/are-orangutans-smart-everything-we-know-about-their-intelligence/

At some point the keepers attempted to give the Orangs some time outside, so it was agreed that the Orangs could use the Chimps’ space while the Chimps were locked inside.

As far as I know, this ‘switch’ was only done a handful of times.

During one of my visits during one of those ‘switches’, I got to see Amoi, joyously climbing on the netting and swinging with some glee!

The way the Orangutans were treated at the SF Zoo was completely unfair, and, quite frankly, astonishing! They endured 6 months of not being able to climb; they were trapped inside tubes; and they could watch fellow Apes enjoy relaxation in a dedicated space that they did not have.

Imagine!

And then the Orangutans had to endure months of construction noises - only to build an asinine bridge in the grotto- a bridge for humans!!! The Orangutans were ‘given’ an old habitat slightly renovated to at least give them a space for themselves.

And their ‘new’ space has a lame structure that limits their instinctive urges to climb!!!

And it’s not even new!!!

It’s atrocious the way the Orangutans were treated.

But Tanya Peterson considered it a triumph that a new species was introduced at the Zoo.

What kind of insensitivity to living, thinking, playful beings must one have to abuse a beloved Ape like that!!??

Why wouldn’t she have waited to bring them here until they had a space to call their own!!??

To this day, the Orangutans often choose to watch the Chimps from their tubes as their climbing structure offers them nothing stimulating.

I always enjoy my visits with the Chimps; though seeing the Orangutans get the short end of the stick is a constant reminder of Zoo management’s lack of care for the Animals."

She says it plain and simple...

"Why would a renowned Zoo tolerate a Director who demonstratively lacks an understanding of basic Animal Care?"

Indeed, Why does a renowned CITY Owned Zoo's appointed management entities the San Francisco Zoological Society and San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission, tolerate Director Tanya Peterson's offenses to the Animals she is charged with caring about?

Thank you to this Friend of Our Great Apes for sharing her feelings.  If any reader wants to be a voice for Our Orangutans, please use the comment form to submit your words for review.

Orangutan/Panda Outrage Will Continue Indefinitely - Repost from 3.2.25

Apologies to returning readers, for this repost.  I wish I could Pin Posts, but I've tried over the years to no avail.  Now, as I concentrate on highlighting the Orangutans plight, and how it is directly connected to Zoo Director Tanya Peterson's selfish and irresponsible push to bring in Pandas, I think it's necessary.  I have abandoned all blog notes that don't pertain to this issue point.  There's a decent amount that have circled my mind in recent days.  As I transfer them from various places, they seem to be sorting themselves and dividing into posts that I think should have a certain flow, especially for new readers.

Original Post - Sunday March 2, 2025...

Here I am again, the last day of my block of IN days, pushing myself to publish at least some of my thoughts.  After two days of peace, I'm attempting to reduce drafts by sorting so many words from my notes, into posts that flow.

I wanted this next post to be an update on non-Zoo grounds issues I've posted about in recent times, so I can be done with those.  But, as I lay here, ready for a nap before the Oscars, my thoughts are only about Our Orangutans, and how the Panda Plan relates to the complete disrespect, lack of care, and frankly the middle finger Director Tanya Peterson has shown them since the first day they got here, six years ago.  The horror and sadness is something that I have never been able to shake, and every time I hear about Pandas, my blood boils.

So, I will publish the following now, and again after that update post, as in this moment, the Orangutan/Panda Outrage is all I think I might want to post about for the foreseeable future.

Months ago I wrote that I wanted to wean myself from blogging, from not reacting to everything.  I feel like I'm able to do that for the most part, because while it may not seem like it, I am focused on one thing.

The last three paragraphs in my previous post, sum it up...

> And here we now are, almost six years after the Orangutans arrival.  Not one thing has been done for them.  They continue to languish on two cluttered concrete islands, and still spend most of their time in the caged tubes, looking down at the Chimpanzees in their spacious netted yard.  No fundraising was ever done for them.  Not before or since their arrival.  YET, Director Peterson has now gone into overdrive to raise funds for Pandas.  AND her Panda Plan includes displacing the Lions from the Lion House (one of the cornerstone structures since the Zoo's opening over ninety years ago),  AND building a new Lion enclosure.  WHILE the Orangutans sit and wait.  Unfortunately, under Tanya Peterson's Direction, they will wait forever.

It's been very clear to those really watching, that Director Tanya Peterson, does not care about or respect the non-Human Beings that call Our Zoo home.  And, it is certainly apparent that she cares the least for Our Great Apes.

The Panda Plan needs to Stop.  Funding needs to materialize for the Orangutans.  They need a new home built, Not Lions.  And certainly not Pandas. <

From the first moment I saw the Orangutans contained in the caged tubes of the skytrails,  my soul wept for them.  I have witnessed the evilness of Director Tanya Peterson too many times.  Her lack of empathy and compassion, outrages me.  It is outrageous that after all she has done to Our Zoo and our innocent Animal Residents, that she is allowed to continue as Director.

I could go on and on, and I will, but for the purpose of this post I will leave it with this for now.  Next month it will have been six years since the Orangutans arrived.  Six years that I have shed tears for Ollie and Amoi (Orangutans) and the damage Tanya Peterson has caused them.  I will continue to be a voice for them in this blog, until they get a new home built for them.

This shameful example of Tanya Peterson's lack of care, came up in conversation this past week. I'll leave you with this f**ked-up post by Peterson, who is making a social distancing joke, about Our Orangutans, who she kept in these caged tubes for eight months straight.

There is nothing " norm" about not providing
a designated home for Beings in your care.

Do not ever forget this.  The face of Tanya Peterson laughing behind her mask, or the faces of Amoi and Ollie, who were stuck in caged tubes for the majority of two years.

The above was originally published in a post from December 31, 2020.  It's worth a read, as it also contains the disgrace of Peterson using Lemur Maki's kidnapping to ask for donations for the Madagascar Debacle, under the guise of it being for Maki's new home.  A complete untruth.

The woman is unconscionable.

Wrap-Updates - The Fails, The Neglect And The Lies

In the last couple months, I've given alot of attention in posts to a few issue points that I want to update on and hopefully that will be a wrap on all but one.  I know I've said similar about letting go of posting about all the Zoo Irks, and I think I've made progress.  These are the reoccurring things I've been on lately, that I'm hoping to "close the case" on.  A couple of these are issues that aren't directly related to the Zoo, but in my mind are connected to the whole lack of care situation in some way.

As we head into brighter days, with the time change and warmer weather upon us, I'm setting-up to unclutter alot of overwhelm from my mind and surroundings.  I can't be tied to tiring old issues that Director Tanya Peterson, the Zoological Society, RecPark, and others, cause our Zoo, it's Residents and our Park Animals with their negligence, lack of care, and laziness.

*Jonesy's Memorial

I last posted about this Valentine's Day, noting that a week after his passing, Jonesy still had no Memorial sign.  The following week, there finally was a sign, but still no container for flowers, which were welcomed via the Zoo's Twitter post.

I was disappointed in the photo.  It cut off the top of his crown, and also didn't even look much like him.  For me, the text was too short and sterile. There were no personal notations and no mention of his two offspring, or that he lived here with his half-sister Zura.

Last week, I saw someone had found a way to leave flowers, squeezing a small bouquet between the metal rods on the photo stand.  It's unfortunate there was still no container, so no water, not allowing for the flowers to last.  Disrespectful in my opinion to Jonesy and the person who brought them.

Why this has been an issue for me... The fail to provide a container, lends to disregard of the Zoo Community who was invited to show their care for Jonesy.  Likewise, no place for cards and/or drawings either, both in addition to flowers were also noted as "welcome to leave".

*The Activists

I have been told both by Zoo Staff and a random person who responded to a comment I made on an In Defense of Animals Twitter post, that latching onto tragic events to push their agendas is the MO of Activists.

I can't let go of how disgusting the Activists are to be keeping up their mantra, and using Jonesy's passing to do so.  I had an interaction with IDA on Twitter, so regardless of whether they've seen what I've posted in my blog, they know what they've done, but they don't care.

They have lost all credibility to their faux stance that they care about the Animals or the Zoo.  Their personal agenda is all they care about.

Why this has been an issue for me... I think their agendas are damaging to the Zoo.  Seeking changes and helping the Zoo thrive should be the course of efforts for anyone claiming to care.

*Coyotes

Since my post July 5, 2024, following the  Botanical Garden Coyote Event, I have written many about it through to November 2.  I well documented the horrific event, highlighting the facts pertaining to the intention by officials to exterminate the whole family and the murder of a four month old Pup.  As well, the lies told by California Dept of Fish and Wildlife point person, Patrick Foy, and supported by creative wording from RecPark spokesperson, Tamara Aparton.

After the KGO News investigation of these Murders and Lies, I still felt there has been no justice for the innocent Coyote Pup whose life was ended for no reason.

I had it on my to-do list to pose questions to Patrick Foy.  I didn't expect an answer, as CDFW ignored specific questioning from KGO reporter Dan Noyes.  The creative narrative continued, and no one took responsibility.  Only recently did I inquire to contact Foy, and was told he retired, but the responder Steve Gonzalez invited me to direct my questions to him, which I did...

"Thank you for your reply and invite to ask questions, regarding the Coyote event last June at the San Francisco Botanical Garden.

I was very disturbed by how the Coyote's and the truth were handled.

My questions to Foy would have been,...

*Why was it a mass murder of all Coyotes on sight?

*Why not tranquilize, swab, and tag?

*Why was a Pup murdered, when there is no way the Pup was the perpetrator?

Considering he knew very well there was an active Den AND there was at least one Pup,...

*Why did he lie to Media and say there was NO active Dens?

*Why did he lie to Media and say there was NO Coyote protecting Pups?

Thank you,..."

Not surprising, I have not received a reply.  I guarantee he didn't liked my questions.  That's ok, they needed to be asked and documented.

If I had received a reply, my follow-up would have been to question, Why the Pup was not tranquilized and turned over to a rescue/rehab facility, to either be raised for release back to wild or a captive home found?

I didn't initially research facility data, but knew a Coyote named Sierra who I visited for several years, at the San Mateo facility, CuriOdyssey.  So, I knew saving that Pup's life was an option.  They just didn't care.

https://curiodyssey.org/blog/a-tribute-to-our-coyote-sierra/

Recently, I realized I hadn't been getting Facebook posts from a friend's Rescue here in The City.  I scrolled through photos, and saw Coyotes.  Her Rescue Yggdrasil, and SFRomp, have both facilitated transfers to appropriate facilities to help young Coyotes in need.  Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue in Petaluma, took in seven Coyote Pups last summer.  Coincidentally just weeks after CDFW Murdered the one at the Botanical Garden. That little four month old girl, could have possibly been raised in their pack and released back into the wild.

The actions of CDFW gunmen were horrifying, barbaric and unnecessary.  The lies are shameful.  All have left me with no confidence that there is caring protocols or transparency of incidents, to the public, by any government entity, state or local.

*Bison Sprinklers

I've been on this disgrace for many years and won't stop until the Bison Paddock Meadow is lush and green with edible grazing vegetation year-round.  Meaning, No dried out brown bullshit during non-rain season.

Despite never admitting to the sprinkler negligence, in the wake of the storm that took down fencing on three sides of the enclosure, the RecPark seemingly did some initial puttering about with what looks like the irrigation system.  That work seems to have stalled, as I haven't seen any attention to it in a couple months.

So, this will be one issue I'll be following up on as the rain stops and summer approaches.

Why this has been an issue for me...  Bison are grazing Animals.  It is part of their natural behavior to graze on and off throughout the day.  That grazing also provides a supplement to their Zoo diet.  Having access to plentiful and appropriate greenery, is part of their Well-being.

*Bison Fence

As of last Wednesday, there was work being done to repair the east fencing.  Yesterday morning (Monday), the east fence didn't look done, and the front was still in shambles, held together with Zip Ties.  Note, the start of repair, was over two months after the damage.  The front fence had no trees on it that needed to be cleared, it was just left that way.  At the very least the front which borders JFK, should have been fixed immediately.

If the RecPark had cared enough about the Bison to keep the sprinklers working consistently, I may not have such a judgemental reaction to the fence.  But their lack of care for years to the Bison's home and their responsibility to Zoo oversight, has voided me cutting them any slack.

Correspondence with a RecPark point person for this issue was useless, as most of what I got was illusions and carefully worded BS.  And then no reply at all.

Why this has been an issue for me... In my opinion, this enclosure houses live Beings and should have been a priority to repair.  Not doing so lends to the typical lack of care and negligent responsibility shown to the Bison Paddock by the RecPark for too many years.

*Trash Can

This receptacle has been damaged for at least two months. Dept of Public Works, has gotten four Service Requests, and as of yesterday, this broken-down shit box was still there.

Why this has been an issue for me...  With the tiring sight and documentation of the broken-down perimeter fence at the Zoo, I'm tired of seeing the front of the Zoo look like shit.

Why Do City Departments Give Our Zoo The Middle Finger?

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2025/02/why-do-city-departments-give-our-zoo.html

*Traffic Barrels

A couple weeks ago, fed-up with No Action regarding the Trash Can, I finally photo'd this cluster-fuck I've been seeing for years leading to the entrance to the Zoo's back lot.

Reported it to SF311.  They made a Service Request, but unlike other reports there was no time frame given.  But, they did note this was a combined effort of DPW and RecPark.  So, further neglect by RecPark to an area related to the Zoo.  They can't be bothered with the Zoo, yet they're all up in the Closing Great Highway bullshit.

... Ok now, I'm just angry ranting.  Good thing I'm done.

Good Grief, City Workers Can't Find The Can - What A Joke

https://iamnotananteater.blogspot.com/2025/02/good-grief-city-workers-cant-find-can.html

Oh wait, I got one more thing to add.  While I'm complaining about the lack of attention the Bison and outside of Zoo, due to City entity negligence, what's Zoo Director Tanya Peterson doing?  Big Fat Nothing, except concentrating on Pandas to further her mis-guided notion of how to manage Our Zoo.
